The baseball showcase organization, Perfect Game Inc., is leaving the LakePoint Sporting Community project in Bartow County. A showcase organization for many future college and pro baseball players and a regional draw for Bartow County’s LakePoint Sporting Community, has decided to move elsewhere for its tournaments. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa-based scouting service plans to secure new baseball facilities in Georgia, according to a news release. It’s part of a larger national expansion. Perfect Game will move its tournaments from LakePoint starting in 2020. The decision comes as investors behind the massive project work to regain its financial footing. In June, eight groups affiliated with the development filed a Chapter 11 reorganization plan in federal bankruptcy court in Atlanta. The restructuring was created with the project’s main investor, California-based hedge fund manager Rimrock Capital. The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department 12U all-star football team defeated the Savannah Hurricanes 12-6 Sunday afternoon to win a second straight Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) Class A 12U state championship. The state playoffs were held Saturday and Sunday at Felker Park in Walton County. Cartersville defeated Walton County West 42-0 Saturday afternoon to earn a spot in the finals. Savannah beat Walton County Central 36-0 in their semifinal game. In Sunday’s victory, Khristian Lando rushed for 170 total yards and two touchdowns to provide much of the Cartersville offense. Stephen Rowser rushed for 55 yards including a trio of important third down conversions throughout the day. Receivers Brayden Pope and Asa Shepard both hauled in key receptions from quarterback Brelace Williams during the game. The Cartersville defense was led by Isaiah Livsey who forced one of the Savannah fumbles and finished with 14 total tackles. Although Cartersville allowed a touchdown on Savannah’s first play of the game, the defense rallied to keep them off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. In all, the Cartersville defense forced five fumbles that resulted in three turnovers. Trevor Harris added an interception for the locals. Logan Shrewsbury was credited with making multiple key defensive plays, and Lando finished with nine tackles and a fumble recovery for Cartersville. The Cartersville special teams were also credited with a shining effort throughout the title game. Reed Ezell led the Cartersville offense with 50 rushing yards and a completed pass to Asa Mitcham. Hagen Sharp added three carries for eight total yards for Cartersville. Mitcham played a key role for Cartersville in defending the Savannah running game. Ezell also chased down two other potential scoring runs. Cartersville 10U reached the state title game by defeating Walton County Central, 36-6 on Saturday. Savannah Stars won their semifinal game 34-0 over Walton County West. The Cass High School wrestling team placed fourth this past Friday and Saturday ---November 30-December 1 --- at the Woodstock High School Wolverine Classic. Sonoraville won the 22-team traditional style tournament with Cherokee, West Forsyth, Cass and North Paulding rounding out the top five. Kell, Sequoyah, Marietta, Lovett, and Kennesaw Mountain finished in sixth through tenth place. Individual placers for Cass: Kailey Rees (3-3) was sixth in the 106-pound division. Cartersville completed a long, time-consuming drive for a touchdown (scoring play not reported) and added a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ezell to Mitcham in the second half. Hudson Lusk, Hagen Sharp, and Dixon Lindsey were noted for their offensive contributions for Cartersville. Lusk rushed for 20 yards. Sharp rushed for 12 yards. Lindsey added eight yards. Defensive standouts for Cartersville were Bear McWhorter, Jacob Ellis (forced fumble), Mitcham, and Lusk. The host Walton County 8U all-stars blanked Cartersville 25-0. Cooper Melvin had 30 rushing yards for Cartersville in the loss, while Brody Jones and Drake Bailey also contributed. Melvin and Jones both finished with eight tackles to help lead the Cartersville defense. Walton County Central will face the Savannah Pit Bulls for the state championship Sunday afternoon. At Adairsville, the Lady Tigers utilized a strong second half defensive effort to rally past Southeast Whitfield, but the Tigers came up short to the visiting Raiders. Meanwhile in Savannah, the Excel Christian Academy boys dropped their first decision of the year. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 61, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 55 The Lady Tigers, keyed by a strong second half defensive effort, rallied Saturday afternoon to beat visiting Southeast Whitfield 61-55 in a non-region tilt. Southeast led 14-8 after one quarter and was ahead 32-18 at halftime before Adairsville turned up the defensive pressure and got back in the game. The Lady Tigers narrowed the margin to 42-41 after three quarters and completed the come-from-behind win by outscoring Southeast Whitfield 43-23 in the second half. McKenna Lentych led Southeast (0-4) and all scorers in the contest with 29 points. Lisette Gomez added nine for the Lady Raiders. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 20 points. Southeast led 15-8 after one quarter and limited Adairsville to only one second quarter point. The Tigers outscored Southeast 17-8 in the third quarter to cut the lead to 13 points, but the Raiders held on for a 48-38 non-region victory. Zac Cole led all scorers in the game with 24 points for Southeast Whitfield (4-2). Savaun Henderson led the Tigers with 12 points. He was followed by Gaven Crunkelton and Derrick Simmons with seven each. Mason Boswell scored five points. Connor Crunkelton added four points and Danarous Johnson finished with two. The Cass girls and the Adairsville boys basketball teams both picked up victories Friday night in local high school basketball action. The Lady Colonels made easy work of visiting Chapel Hill to remain undefeated through four games while the Tigers edged one of the preseason favorites in Region 6-AAA. CASS GIRLS 62, CHAPEL HILL 27 The Lady Colonels remained unbeaten Friday night with a 62-27 non-region win over visiting Chapel Hill. Cass led 15-7 after one quarter and extended their lead to 39-16 by halftime. The Lady Colonels led 58-20 after three quarters. Sharia Wade led Cass with 16 points. Claire Davis and Payton Stoddard followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Alexis Ware added eight points. Londaisha Smith, Ariana Hames, and Brianna Stephenson contributed five points apiece. Malahne Walker led Chapel HIll with seven points. The Lady Panthers record stands at 2-2. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes earned a third trip to the state championship game in the past four years Friday night with a come-from-behind, 17-14 home semifinal victory over Marist. The Canes' defense rose up again on multiple key possessions as Cartersville survived a game the offense turned the ball over four times. Two of the four turnovers resulted in Marist taking a halftime lead, but a pair of defensive stops following turnovers made the difference for the Purple Hurricanes. Cartersville took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 33-yard scoring strike from Tee Webb to Devonte Ross (photo). Oscar Hernandez, who made both extra points in the game for Cartersville, also booted a first quarter 29-yard field goal that gave the Canes a 3-0 lead. Despite the early advantage for Cartersville, Marist grabbed a 14-10 lead by halftime. Kyle Hamilton intercepted a tipped pass to set up a short field for Marist and Lincoln Parker capped the scoring drive with a 4-yard run with 1:20 remaining in the second quarter. A 15-yard strip sack, recovery, and return for a touchdown by the War Eagles’ Jalen Clark gave Marist a 14-10 lead with only 0:35 remaining in the first half. Following a scoreless third period, Cartersville took the lead for good with 7:51 remaining in the game. Webb (photo) found Ross again with a 38-yard touchdown pass for the Canes’ 17-14 lead. With the victory, the Cartersville senior class improved to 55-1 in their careers. Webb finished the night 11-for-24 for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He threw two interceptions and fumbled twice. Marcus Gary rushed 21 times for the Hurricanes for 80 yards. Ross had four receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson Lowe caught a pair of passes for 30 yards. Cartersville will face Blessed Trinity for the Class AAAA state championship Wednesday, December 12 at 4:30 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The Cass girls and boys basketball teams both defeated visiting Fannin County Tuesday night while the Excel Christian Academy boys routed visiting Morris Innovative. At Adairsville, the Lady Tigers dropped an eight point decision to visiting Ringgold while the Tigers fell in their opener in overtime. CASS GIRLS 62, FANNIN COUNTY 49 The Lady Colonels won their third straight game to open the 2018-19 season Tuesday night with a 62-49 victory over visiting Fannin County. Cass and the Lady Rebels were knotted at 15 each after one quarter, but the Lady Colonels carried a 29-26 lead to the intermission and expanded their advantage to 44-37 after three quarters. Amber Brittian led four Cass players in double figures with 14 points. She also made five of six free throws in the fourth quarter to help secure the win. Sharia Wade and Payton Stoddard followed with 13 points apiece. Stoddard’s evening included a trio of three-pointers. Claire Davis added ten points for Cass. Jacquez Fountain scored 13 points for Cass and Jaylon Johnson added ten. Andrew Glaze chipped in with six points for the Colonels. Braxton Benham scored five points. Ethan Carter, Zay Jackson, and Justice Hayes contributed four point each. Excel took control early by outscoring the Tigers 29-4 in the opening eight minutes. The Eagles led 49-11 at halftime and 74-17 after three quarters. Rayshawn Womack led ECA with 19 points. He was followed by Kalil Holley with 18 points, Jacob Day with 15, and Trippe Anderson with 12 points. The loss dropped Morris Innovative to 0-3 for the season. RINGGOLD 52, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 51 — OT Visiting Ringgold pulled out a 52-51 overtime victory at Adairsville Tuesday night as both teams opened Region 6-AAA play. Ringgold held leads of 15-11 and 29-26 at the end of the first quarter and halftime before the host Tigers took a 40-37 advantage after three quarters. The two teams were tied at 47 after regulation time. Cade Nayadley led Ringgold (3-1, 1-0) with 19 points. Logan Hallender scored 11. Gaven Crunkelton, Savaun Henderson, and Malachi Gardner each had 10 points for Adairsville. Mason Boswell scored nine. Danarous Johnson and Connor Crunkelton contributed seven and six points, respectively. The performance included 14-of-21 passing for 156 yards with one touchdown. He also ran for 53 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts. NIU (7-5) won the Mid-American Conference West and will play Buffalo Friday night in Detroit for the MAC Championship. JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (Fr., PK, Cartersville HS)… banged a 56-yard field goal with 25 seconds to play Saturday to give the 49ers a 27-24 Conference-USA victory at Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, FL. The kick was a third, 50+ yard field goal for Cruz this season. In Saturday’s contest he also had a 30-yard field goal in the first quarter, converted all three PAT kicks, and had 4-of-6 kickoffs for touchbacks. For the season, Cruz was 17 of 22 on field goal attempts, 27-for-27 on PATs, and booted 31 of 54 kickoffs for touchbacks. Charlotte finished the 2018 season with a 5-7 overall record and was 4-4 in conference play. RICO FRYE — Bowling Green University (Fr., RB, Cartersville HS)… had three carries for 22 yards Friday night in the Falcons’ 44-14 loss to MAC East champion Buffalo. Frye played in ten games with three starts as a true freshman. He finished the year with 78 rushing attempts for 338 yards and one touchdown. He had a long run of 27 yards. He also caught six passes for nine yards, returned two kickoffs for a 9.5 yard average and even added two tackles. Bowling Green finished the season with a 3-9 record. The Falcons were 2-6 in the Mid-American Conference. GABRIEL GRIDLEY — Angelo State University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… the Rams did not play this past week, but received an invitation to a bowl game for the second season in a row and seventh time in school history. ASU (6-5, 4-4 Lone Star Conference) will take on University of Central Oklahoma (7-4, 7-4 Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association) Saturday in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl. LUCAS JOHNSON — Georgia State University (Sr., OL, Cass HS)… was in the offensive line rotation Saturday during the Panthers’ 35-14 home loss to Georgia Southern. Georgia State finished the year with a 2-10 overall record and was 1-7 in the Sun Belt Conference. EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (So., DE, Woodland HS)… had a pair of tackles Thanksgiving Day in the Rams’ 27-19 loss at Air Force. In 10 games played this season, Jones had 34 tackles (15 solo) including six tackles for loss, two sacks, five quarterback hurries, and one interception. Colorado State finished the season with a 3-9 mark and was 2-6 in the Mountain West Conference. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (Fr., QB, Cartersville HS)… amassed a career-high 393 passing yards on 27 completions in 36 attempts, including eight straight completions for 106 yards to open the game Saturday night as the 2nd-ranked Tigers completed an undefeated regular season with a 56-35 win over rival South Carolina. The true freshman had one touchdown pass, a 22-yarder late in the first quarter to Tee Higgins that gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead. Clemson (12-0, 8-0 ACC) plays Pitt Saturday night in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte. MARK QUATTLEBAUM — UNC-Charlotte (Sr., SL, Cartersville HS)… caught two passes for 23 yards including a 12-yard, first quarter touchdown pass as the 49ers finished their 2018 season with a 27-24 Conference-USA win at Florida Atlantic Univeristy. Quattlebaum caught 17 passes this season for 198 yards and three touchdowns. He also had 12 punt returns for 57 yards. He appeared in 38 games in his career for the 49ers with 52 catches for 577 yards and four touchdowns. Charlotte was 5-7 overall and 4-4 in C-USA. GARRETT SHELTON — Alabama State University (Fr., LS, Cartersville HS)… the Hornets’ long snapper saw action in a 31-24 overtime win Thanksgiving Day over Mississippi Valley State. ASU finished 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. AVERY SHOWELL — Georgia Tech (R-Fr., Cartersville HS)… saw action in Tech’s 45-21 loss Saturday at 5th-ranked Georgia. Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets closed the regular season with wins in six of their last eight games and has earned a bowl berth for the 23rd time in 24 seasons. Tech will learn its postseason destination Sunday.
