The Woodland Lady Cats made their Class AAAAA first round playoff series a clean sweep Thursday night with a pair of five-inning, mercy-rule wins. Woodland, the top-seed from Region 7-AAAAA, beat the visiting North Springs Lady Spartans 8-0 and 9-1 to advance and host the Sweet Sixteen round between next Tuesday, October 16 and Friday the 19th. In the opener Thursday, Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard tossed a one-hitter in a five-inning, complete-game shutout win. She struck out three. Kendyl Hardin had three hits including a triple and three RBI while Caroline Higdon had three hits including a double and one RBI. Bella Carnes finished with a pair of hits and one RBI. Ansley Evans had a triple and Hannah Miller drove in two runs with a pair of sacrifice flies. Morgan Cooper and Jordan Duck contributed to the offense with sacrifices to move runners. Natalie Bernstein had the only North Springs base hit. In the nightcap, Woodland rolled up nine runs in the first four innings as Lady Cats’ pitcher Madi Bentley (photo) limited the Spartans. Bentley worked all five innings, allowing three hits, no walks, and a single earned run. She fanned two. Caroline Higdon had three hits for the Lady Cats. Kendyl Hardin had two hits including a double and three RBI. Morgan Bailey contributed two hits with one RBI. Hannah Miller doubled and had two RBI. Bella Carnes added a hit and one RBI. Jordan Duck drove in one run with a fourth inning sacrifice fly. The Spartans’ season ends with an 8-12 record. Cartersville volleyball won its opening match of the Region 5-AAAA tournament Tuesday at Chapel Hill to advance and host the region semifinals and finals this Thursday. The Lady Canes started slowly, but eventually swept Central-Carroll 25-23 and 25-19. “We were a little flat after a lengthy layoff,” said Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran. “It was a loud and exciting atmosphere and we found ourselves trailing 8-2 in the second set before we tied it at 16.” Nedu Evans (photo) finished with 12 kills and two aces. Bekah Stevens had eight kills and four aces. Grace Hunter had 26 assists and three aces. Anna Mathis and Anna Grace Brock finished with ten and eight digs, respectively. “Emily Petty subbed in during the second set and served three great serves in a row to help us take a three-point lead. Then the girls did a good job finishing out the match. We now have a shot to win our third consecutive region title,” Cothran concluded. Hunter, Stevens, and Evans were all named to the All-Region 5-AAAA team with Evans earning region MVP honors. Cartersville (21-11) hosts the region semifinals and finals Thursday. The Lady Canes will play Troup at 5 p.m.

GOLF LINDSEY BONNER — York College (Soph., Cartersville HS)… shot 88-91 this past weekend to place 26th individually, but her Spartans team won the 12-team, 50-player Green Turtle Invitational at Shenandoah Valley Golf club in Front Royal, Virginia. York shot 315-307—622 to win by nine shots over Stevenson (MD). The Spartans play this Saturday and Sunday in The Revolutionary Collegiate Golf Classic at Patriots Glen National Golf Club in Elkton, Maryland.

Chad Branton of Cartersville reached the quarterfinals of the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship this weekend at Echelon Golf Club in Alpharetta. Branton fired an even par 72 last Thursday in stroke play to qualify for the match play bracket. He had a win Friday over Mel Mendenhall 1-up in the first round and then knocked off the defending champion — Stan Gann — 1-up in the second round. He then lost 7&6 Saturday to Bob Royak in the quarterfinals. The tournament championship was won Sunday by Matthew Hayes 2&1 over Samuel Lape. Both Hayes and Lape are members of the Furman University golf team.

The Woodland High School cross country teams competed Saturday at the Great American Cross Country Festival held at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The Woodland girls were featured in the Girls Race of Champions won individually by Kelsey Chmiel of Saratoga Springs (NY) in 16:43. The Woodland boys, competing in the Varsity Blue Boys Division placed 26th of 44 teams that included 332 runners. The division was won by Broughton (NC) followed by St. Pius X (GA) and Brentsville District (VA). Zachary Worthman of Clarksburg (MD) won the Blue Boys Division race in 15:51. The Georgia Class 5A top-ranked Lady Cats were paced by McKenna Trapheagen (19th, 18:18, photo). She was followed by teammates Carli Clymer (52nd, 19:11), Angela Cochran (69th, 19:26), Rylee Evans (101st, 19:54), and Baylee Evans (123rd, 20:09). John Shropshire led the Wildcats with a 48th place finish in 17:36. He was followed by teammates Dylan Stermer (96th, 18:08), John Forsyth (135th, 18:28), Kobe Cochran (172nd, 18:42), Reece Mitchell (210th, 19:02), Patrick Bollwerk (212th, 19:04), and Ian Van Order (232nd, 19:20). Woodland will run next Saturday at the Coach Wood Invitational in Whitesburg, GA. CARTERSVILLE RUNS AT JESSE OWENS CLASSIC The Cartersville cross country teams competed Saturday in the annual Jesse Owens Classic held at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Oakville, Alabama. The Georgia Class AAAA 7th-ranked Cartersville harriers finished ninth in the Boys Silver Division that included 51 schools and 357 runners. Pearl (MS) won the division, followed by James Clemens (AL), Rossview (TN), Station Camp (TN), and Father Ryan (TN). Bill Archer led the Hurricanes with a 19th place finish in 17:14. He was followed by teammates Alex Rios (64th, 18:04), Max Florence (69th, 18:09), Parker Breedlove (128th, 18:47), Harrison Banks (129th, 18:47), Jacob Busek (133rd, 18:49), and Colin McCann (140th, 18:54). The Cartersville girls placed 22nd in the 42-team Silver Division race won by Fort Payne (AL). The Auburn (AL) girls were second, followed by Pelham (AL), Father Ryan (TN), and Pearl (MS) in the top five. Katelyn Cartwright of Hernando High won the 286 competitor Silver Division race in 19:00. Cartersville was led by Alex Machado (61st, 22:02). She was followed by fellow Lady Canes Trista Kelly (132nd, 23:31), Vanna Beach (142nd, 23:47), Alice Terry (158th, 24:06.67), Jaxiry Betancourt (159th, 24:06.97), Jocelyn Blanchette (176th, 24:28), and Metzli Munoz (204th, 25:39). Next for Cartersville is the MileStat Invitational next Saturday in Mechanicsville, Virginia.

Cartersville cruised past visiting LaGrange Friday night behind five touchdown passes by quarterback Tee Webb, but the Hurricanes were the only Bartow County team to win -- defeating the Grangers 45-7. Cass started slowly in a 34-21 loss at Hiram, Adairsville was blanked by top-ranked Calhoun 61-0, and Woodland fell to 4th-ranked Carrollton 47-20 despite three touchdown passes by Jakob Foss. CANES CRUISE BEHIND WEBB’S FIVE TD PASSES Cartersville made easy work of visiting LaGrange Friday night at Weinman Stadium, taking down the Grangers 45-7. The Canes went up 17-0 early, surpassing the most points allowed by the Grangers in a game this season and it came in the first quarter alone. Tee Webb connected with Kaleb Chatmon for Cartersville’s first touchdown and after Oscar Hernandez kicked a field goal, Marcus Gary added a touchdown run for the Hurricanes’ early advantage. In the second quarter, Webb had touchdown throws to both Devonte Ross and Marko Dudley as Cartersville took a 31-0 lead to the locker room. LaGrange (1-5, 0-3) scored on a 55-yard pick-six in the third quarter, but Cartersville and Webb added touchdown strikes to Jackson Lowe and Marquail Coaxum for a 45-7 victory. Webb finished 26-for-36 for 337 yards and five touchdowns. He did throw one interception. Marcus Gary had 82 total yards and a touchdown. Quante Jennings rushed for 108 yards. Jackson Lowe finished with 47 yards receiving and a touchdown. Devonte Ross had 39 yards and a score. Kaleb Chatmon contributed 32 yards and a touchdown. Hiram quarterback, Nate Presnell, threw a pair of first quarter touchdowns to Kyshun Battle and running back Marcus Fulks rushed for a 13-yard score as the Hornets raced to a 20-0 lead. The Colonels kept the ball for almost 11 minutes of the second quarter and narrowed the margin to 20-7 on a two-yard keeper by Rett Moore (photo), but Presnell drove the Hornets 55 yards in four plays to match the Colonels’ second quarter touchdown. The 6-foot-7-inch quarterback connected on an 11-yard scoring completion to Jermaine Banks with 0:43 remaining in the half and led his team to the intermission with a 27-7 lead. Malik Grimes capped a 64-yard, third quarter drive for Cass that narrowed Hiram’s lead to 27-14, but Fulks broke loose on a 65-yard scamper with 6:20 left in the game to make the Hornets’ lead 34-14. Cass cashed in a Hiram turnover with 3:12 remaining in the game. After the Hornets fumbled at their own 17 yard line, Zay Jackson scored on a nine-yard run making the final score 34-21. Fulks finished with 165 yards rushing for Hiram. Presnell was 7-for-8 passing for 133 yards. Cass was led by Moore with 102 yards rushing. Malik Grimes added 46 yards on the ground. Hiram improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (1-6, 0-5) hosts East Paulding next Friday night. TOP-RANKED CALHOUN ROLLS AT ADAIRSVILLE The Adairsville Tigers fell to Calhoun Friday night by a score of 61-0. The Tigers had a tough time keeping their offense on the field while attempting to contain the high-powered attack of Calhoun. The Class AAA defending state champion Yellow Jackets led 21-0 after one quarter and 47-0 at the half. Class AAA top-ranked Calhoun took advantage of four first half interceptions and recovered a pair of kickoff fumbles in building their one-sided lead. Zack Fuller ran for three touchdowns and Gavin Gray tossed a pair of touchdown strikes for the Yellow Jackets. Fuller scored on runs of 3-, 11-, and 46-yards. Gray connected with Brannon Spector for a 20-yard touchdown and Luke Moseley for a 26-yard score. Jonkell Tolbert, Julian Ipac, and Jerrian Hames had touchdown runs for Calhoun. Backup quarterback Jake Morrow completed a 56-yard touchdown to Cedric Lacey in the second half. Calhoun improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Regon 6-AAA. Adairsville drops to 3-4 on the year and 2-3 in region action. The Tigers play at Sonoraville next Friday. FOSS THROWS FOR THREE TOUCHDOWNS, BUT WILDCATS FALL TO TROJANS Carrollton raced out to a 21-0 lead at Woodland Friday night on their way to a 47-20 Region 7-AAAAA victory, but Wildcats’ quarterback Jakob Foss threw for three touchdowns in the loss. Brandon Marenco ran for four touchdowns to lead the Trojans. Trent Lane also had a score and several key runs for Carrollton. Foss (photo) connected with Justice Carter for a 41-yard touchdown and Titus Jones added a two-point conversion that made the score 21-8 at the time. Foss then found Jones before the intermission for a 15-yard touchdown pass that made the score 28-14 at halftime. Three straight touchdowns by Carrollton pushed the Trojans’ lead to 41-14 before Foss connected with Jones again for a 42-yard scoring play. Justice Carter had 105 rushing yards on 21 carries and added a touchdown catch. Jones finished with 109 yards. Foss was 7-for-15 passing for 150 yards. Carrollton improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in region action. Woodland (4-3, 2-3) has a bye week before traveling to Villa Rica October 19.

The Woodland Middle School girls and boys cross country teams captured dominating wins this week at the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association's 2018 championship meet. The Cartersville girls were runner-up and the Calhoun boys placed second. The Woodland girls took six of the top nine individual spots with Emma Segars winning the race in 13:31. Tyler Jones of Woodland won the boys race in 11:42. He led six Wildcats' runners in the top ten.
