Cartersville won its seventh consecutive region championship and the Hurricanes’ completed a fourth straight undefeated regular season with a 43-10 victory over Troup Friday night at Weinman Stadium. Marcus Gary ran for 149 yards on 22 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns while quarterback Tee Webb threw for two touchdowns and ran for one as the Canes’ put the visiting Tigers away early. Gary (photo) went right up the middle and raced 77 yards on Cartersville’s first play from scrimmage to take a 7-0 lead. That was followed by a 45-yard interception return for touchdown by Amarai Orr that gave Cartersville a 14-0 lead in the second minute of the game. Troup cut the lead to 14-3 with a 36-yard field goal by Helsyn Martinez midway through the first quarter, but the Canes added two more touchdowns to take a 28-3 lead to the intermission. Webb tossed a 46-yard scoring strike to Devonte Ross with 1:49 remaining in the first quarter and then connected with Jackson Lowe early in the second quarter on a 20-yard touchdown pass. A long kickoff return to open the second half set up Troup’s only touchdown of the night. Tigers’ QB Kobe Hudson scored on a four-yard run to cut the Canes’ lead to 28-10. Cartersville answered with a five-yard touchdown run by Webb midway through the third quarter for a 34-10 lead, then added a safety and a 12-yard scoring run by Gary for a 43-10 lead before the end of the quarter. Webb finished 12-for-24 through the air for 185 yards and two touchdowns to go with his rushing touchdown. Jackson Lowe had three receptions for 59 yards and one score. Amarai Orr added a strip sack and a fumble recovery to his first quarter pick-six. Troup (9-1) will host Oconee County next week in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs. Cartersville (10-0) will host Stephens County at Weinman Stadium. COLONELS DROP 17-14 DECISION TO PATRIOTS Cass took a 14-10 lead over visiting Paulding County Friday night on the opening play of the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on in a season-ending 17-14 loss. Paulding quarterback Hunter Jennings connected with Keishon Jackson on the ensuing Patriots’ drive for the go-ahead touchdown. The scoring play culminated a 73-yard, seven play drive. Tony Lauzurica returned the game’s opening kickoff 99 yards to give Paulding a quick 7-0 lead, but Cass tied the score later in the first quarter on a 69-yard touchdown scamper by Malik Grimes. Matthew Frey made a 25-yard field goal with 9:00 remaining in the second quarter to give Paulding a 10-7 lead at halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, Cass’ Zay Jackson capped a 52-yard, 11-play drive for the Colonels on the first play of the fourth quarter. Jackson’s 8-yard touchdown run gave the Colonels their only lead of the night at 14-10. The win was the first of the season for the 1-9 Patriots who finished 1-7 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass finished the year 1-9 overall and 0-8 in region action. CONLEY’S FIVE TDs LEADS KELL PAST WOODLAND Woodland won its first four games in 2018, but Friday night’s 41-18 loss at Kell was a sixth straight for the Wildcats who finished the season with a 4-6 mark. Kell quarterback Evan Conley had a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jaylon Brown, a five-yard touchdown pass to Sam Blancato, and a 19-yard touchdown run for the Longhorns in the first half. Xavier Parris added a two-yard touchdown run for Kell and Logan Flesher made three of four PATs as the Longhorns built a 27-3 first half lead. Following an early turnover, Ronny Ramirez booted a 31-yard field goal that gave Woodland a 3-0 lead and Jakob Foos completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Titus Jones late in the second quarter. Conley added two more Kell touchdown passes in the second half. He connected with Ebony Jackson on a 21-yard score and found Parris on a 67-yard strike. Colby Kerns made both PATs. Justice Carter (photo), who rushed for 90 yards, added a late touchdown run for the Wildcats who also scored a two-point conversion. The performance put Carter over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Woodland's Demarcus Williams rushed for 68 yards on 22 attempts. Foss was 3-of-7 passing for 17 yards and a score. Kell (8-2) will host Carver, Atlanta next Friday as a 2-seed in the opening round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs.

For the second time in three seasons, the Woodland Lady Cats’ cross country team won the GHSA Class AAAAA state championship. This year's title was secured Friday in Carrollton with the Lady Cats edging defending state champion McIntosh by three points. Individual state champion, McKenna Trapheagen (photo), led the Lady Cats who had all five scoring runners in the top 20 of the 199-runner field. Woodland also had all seven runners finish inside the top 44 and finished with 56 team points. McIntosh had 59 team points with all five scoring runners in the top 18. Their seven runners all finished inside the top 38 runners, but the Lady Cats' totals narrowly edged the Lady Chiefs. Starr’s Mill placed third in Class 5A with Union Grove and Grady rounding out the top five. The classification included 29 girls teams. Trapheagen won the individual state championship by completing the typically slow 5K course in 19:07. She outdistanced runner-up Gabby Parsons of Union Grove and third-place Mackenzie Walls of Veterans by 40 seconds to capture the title. Trapheagan was followed by teammates Carli Clymer (10th, 20:18), Angela Cochran (11th, 20:24), Rylee Evans (14th, 20:34), Baylee Evans (20th, 20:52), Cheyenne Spinks (28th, 21:22), and Marlee Bowles (45th, 22:12). The Woodland boys finished 17th of 32 Class AAAAA teams in Friday's state finals. Starr’s Mill won the team championship by 15 points over McIntosh. Decatur placed third with South Effingham and Grady rounding out the top five in the classification. Dominic Macias (16:35) of Union Grove won the individual championship by two seconds over Zach Jaeger of McIntosh. Dylan Stermer led Woodland with a 46th place finish of 222 runners in 18:16. The Cartersville volleyball team had its state tournament run come to an end Tuesday night at The Storm Center in a straight sets loss to St. Pius X, 25-16, 25-14, 25-5. Prior to Tuesday’s Final Four loss, Cartersville had state tournament wins over Madison County, LaFayette, and Richmond Academy, but perennial power St. Pius proved to be a much bigger task. The loss ends the Lady Canes’ season with a 26-12 record. Cartersville also won a third consecutive Region 5-AAAA championship and this was the program’s first-ever trip to the state’s Final Four. The Cartersville team will see the departure of eight seniors, including five lineup regulars. St. Pius X advances to face Marist in the GHSA Class AAA State Championship match Saturday at Marietta High School. Marist prevailed at Columbus in the other state semifinal match Tuesday night 25-19, 21-25, 25-20 and 25-23.

A senior on the varsity football and competition cheerleading squads, she also competes for the Lady Canes in track and field. “Ashlin is a dedicated team player who puts in 100% at every practice, game, and competition,” said coach Breanna McDonald. “She leads by example and always goes the extra mile.” The daughter of Jeff and Donna Borkowsky, Ashlin has cheered for four years on both varsity squads. “In all of my dealings with Ashlin, she has shown to be a young woman of character, intelligence, and talent,” McDonald continued. “ She always displays the leadership and work ethic that every coach hopes for from a team.” Borkowsky is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. She plans to attend a four-year college and major in business. She currently maintains a 4.1 GPA. Cass High School’s Elite Athlete of the Month for October is Zoe Bryson. A four-year cheerleading letterman, Bryson is a member of both the varsity competition and football squads. She has also been chosen as Most Valuable Cheerleader for the past two years at Cass and is a UCA All-American Cheerleader. Bryson demonstrates leadership in other ways as well. The senior has been involved in a wide variety of clubs and organization at CHS while academically maintaining a 4.0 GPA. The daughter of Phillip and Kelli Bryson, Zoe plans to cheer at The University of Georgia where she will be a Biology (Pre-Med) major. Titus Jones is the Elite Athlete of the Month for October from Woodland High School. A senior three-sport athlete, Jones has played quarterback, defensive back, and wide receiver for the Wildcats. He is also a member of the baseball team and participates in track and field. “Titus is the leader of our defense,” noted Woodland head football coach Tony Plott. “He’s on pace for over 100 tackles for a third consecutive season and sets the tone for us with his physical style of play. He makes plays from sideline to sideline.” The son of Stephen and Marilyn Jones, Titus plans to continue his education and play college football. He has also been a big contributor for the Wildcats’ offense and special teams. “Titus has made a huge impact on the offensive side of the ball while playing both quarterback and wide receiver. He also serves as our kickoff and punt returner,” Plott concluded. The Elite Athlete of the Month for October from Adairsville High School is Harper Powell. A sophomore on the Tigers’ swim team, Harper is the daughter of Shawn and Angela Powell. Powell competes in the 200 IM Relay, 200 Free Relay, 50 Freestyle, and 100 Backstroke and only started competing in swimming a year ago. “Harper is a coach’s dream,” said Adairsville swim coach Shawn Williams. “She enjoys hard work and is determined to do her best every time she enters the water. She is not satisfied being second best and pushes herself and her teammates to reach their potential.” A 4.0 GPA student taking all Honors and Advanced Placement classes, Powell remains undecided on a college to attend and a potential major. The third quarter field goal was from 40 yards and made the score 17-0 at the time. The fourth quarter field goal was from 39 yards with 4:19 remaining to give the 49ers a 20-10 advantage. Three of his kickoffs went for touchbacks and the two returns were for only 16 yards combined. For the season, Cruz is 12-for-17 on field goal attempts including a long kick of 54 yards. 23 of his 38 kickoffs have been for touchbacks. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (Fr., QB, Cartersville HS)… was 20-for-37 for 314 yards and four touchdowns in only two and one-half quarters Saturday as the 2nd-ranked Tigers steamrolled Florida State in Tallahassee 59-10. Lawrence had touchdown passes of 7- and 3-yards to Tee Higgins in the second quarter before connecting on touchdown passes of 58- and 68-yards to Amari Rodgers in the third quarter to build a 45-0 lead. CROSS COUNTRY SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Sr., Kingston, GA; Darlington HS)… finished second individually of 80 runners as the Lynx dominated the eight-team Southern Athletic Association Championship Meet Saturday at the Shelby Farms Course in Memphis. Rhodes had the top four individual runners and finished with five in the top nine to win the conference title. The win was a fourth-straight conference title for the Lynx. Oglethorpe University was second and Berry College finished third. Fields covered the 8K course in 25:25 averaging 5:06 per mile. Fields and the 25th-ranked Rhodes College team advances to the NCAA D-III South/Southeast Regional November 10 at Berry College in Rome attempting to qualify for the NCAA D-III National Championships in Wisconsin the following week. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON — Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; F, Emmanuel College, Excel Christian Academy; Argentine Pro League)… scored eight points with six rebounds, and two assists in his team’s 83-74 loss to Hindu Club Friday night. Robinson is averagine 16 points, five rebounds, and one assist through the first three games of the season. Villa San Martin (1-2) plays at Independiente this Friday night. SOCCER EMILY COLLUM — Georgia Southwestern State University (Fr., F, Adairsville HS)… took one shot on goal but did not score last Wednesday in a 3-1 home win over Albany State. She then took a pair of shots — neither on goal — in a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference loss Saturday against visiting Lander University. Collum played 53 minutes against Albany State and 84 against Lander. The Hurricanes’ season ends with a 3-14 overall record. They were 0-10 in conference and failed to qualify for the eight-team PBC Tournament. KATELYNN LAWHORN — Life University (So., MF, Adairsville HS)… played 71 minutes in a 4-0 loss to visiting Middle Georgia State last Wednesday and took one shot Sunday in a 5-2 loss at 14th-ranked Lindsey Wilson College (KY). Life wrapped up the regular season with a 6-10 mark. KURT MOORE — Birmingham Southern College (Jr., GK, Euharlee, GA; Darlington HS)… made 13 saves in his fourth start of the season, but allowed an overtime goal in a 1-0 loss last Tuesday to Talladega College. BSC (10-5-2) had its season end Saturday with a loss to Berry College in the Southern Athletic Association Championship Tournament in Atlanta. MARISSA MOWRY — Anderson University (Fr., F, Cartersville HS)… played 21 minutes off the bench in a 3-0 win last Wednesday at Coker College. She added seven minutes of playing time in the Trojans’ 2-0 loss Saturday to visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University. For what is believed to be the first time in school history, the Lady Canes’ volleyball team has reached the Final Four of the state playoffs. Cartersville swept past Richmond Academy in three straight sets Saturday in Augusta to win their quarterfinal match, 3-0. “We started slowly,” said Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran. “We were down 19-10 in the first set before we stepped up and started playing.” The Lady Canes came from behind to win that opening set 26-24 and then took the next two sets 25-17 and 25-16. “They (Richmond Academy) were good defensively, but we spotted some openings and capitalized on them,” Cothran continued. “They had the best servers we’ve faced, so I’m proud of the job our serve receive did today.” Anna Grace Brock (photo) had a big day for Cartersville with 16 kills, eight digs, and three service aces. “Anna Grace Brock had the best match of her young career,” added Cothran. “ She seemed to put balls down in bunches from the outside. Nedu Evans and Bekah Stevens also had big days for us. Grace Hunter also set a great match and had some great swings when we needed them most.” Evans contributed 11 kills, seven digs, and six aces. Stevens (photo) totaled 11 kills and five digs, while Hunter finished with 38 assists and three aces. Cartersville, now 26-11, will host St. Pius on Tuesday at The Storm Center in the Final Four. St. Pius defeated Northside-Columbus in three straight sets Saturday in the quarterfinals. The other Class AAAA semifinal Tuesday will feature Marist at Columbus. Both of those teams swept their quarterfinal opponents Saturday. Marist beat Woodward Academy and Columbus defeated Northwest Whitfield.

Both Woodland and Adairsville suffered region football losses Friday night with the Wildcats falling to visiting East Paulding 24-7 and the Tigers dropping a 31-10 road decision at Ringgold. Cartersville and Cass both had bye weeks and will return to action next week. Cartersville (9-0) hosts Troup (9-0) next Friday in a defacto Region 5-AAAA championship tilt at Weinman Stadium. Cass (1-8) wraps up the 2018 campaign at home against Paulding County (0-9). EAST PAULDING 24, WOODLAND 7 Woodland moved the ball pretty well against visiting East Paulding but the Wildcats committed too many first half turnovers in a 17-point loss Friday night to the Raiders. A Cameron Westmoreland field goal midway through the first quarter and a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Tyrell Robinson gave East Paulding a 10-0 advantage less than a minute into the second quarter. Woodland responded with a drive culminated on a fourth down, one-yard Titus Jones (photo) touchdown run to narrow the margin to 10-7 at halftime. Justice Carter had a long run to the five yard line that set up the Wildcats’ score. Ronny Ramirez converted the extra point kick. Neither team mustered another score until the fourth quarter when the Raiders’ Skyler Melton broke off a 44-yard scamper with about 10 minutes remaining and Jhalil Daniels added a one-yard rushing touchdown in the final minute. East Paulding (5-4, 5-2) remains in contention for one of Region 7-AAAAA’s state playoff berths. The Raiders host Villa Rica next Friday. Carter finished the game with 118 yards on 14 carries for Woodland and Demarcus Williams added 81 yards on 20 attempts. Woodland (4-5, 2-5) will look to snap a five-game losing skid and salvage a .500 season next Friday at 10th-ranked Kell. RINGGOLD 31, ADAIRSVILLE 10 A strong rushing attack by host Ringgold proved to be too much for the Adairsville Tigers Friday night in a 31-10 Region 6-AAA decision. Ringgold got a big night from running backs Andre Tarver and Dalton Green to keep their Class AAA at-large playoff berth hopes alive. Green had touchdown runs of 20- and 16-yards, while Tarver scored rushing touchdowns from 35- and 40-yards out to lead the host Tigers. Green put Ringgold up 6-0 with 11:52 remaining in the second quarter and rounded out the scoring with 4:20 left in the game. His final touchdown was set up by a 42-yard scamper by Tarver. Tarver’s two rushing touchdowns came in the third quarter to push Ringgold’s lead from 12-10 to 25-10 with 1:04 left in the period. Ringgold quarterback Cole Kibler also had a solid night with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jared Dunn midway through the second quarter to take a 12-0 lead and another long pass to Dunn late in the third quarter to set up Tarver’s second score and a 25-10 advantage. Trailing 12-0 with less than five minutes left in the first half, Adairsville drove quickly down the field to set up a successful 42-yard field goal by Emmanuel Lopez with 0:16 remaining before the intermission. Adairsville then cut Ringgold’s lead to 12-10 on the opening drive of the third quarter. Mason Boswell (photo) finished off a 65-yard drive that took 10 plays with a four-yard scoring run. Boswell finished his final high school game with 162 total yards of offense. He rushed for 116 yards, passed for 36 and caught one pass for 10 yards. Unfortunately for Adairsville, their threat would not last. Ringgold scored 19 unanswered point over the game’s final 20 minutes for their 21-point win. Ringgold improves to 4-5 on the season and 3-4 in Region 6-AAA. They host Coahulla Creek next Friday. Adairsville’s season ends with a 4-6 overall mark and a 3-5 region record.

The Cartersville boys were runner-up and the Lady Canes placed third Thursday at the Region 5-AAAA Cross Country Championships at Clinton Farms in western Douglas County. The Canes finished behind region winner LaGrange and ahead of host Chapel Hill, Sandy Creek, and Cedartown in the top five. The Cartersville girls were third behind Chapel Hill and LaGrange. Sandy Creek was fourth and Central-Carroll placed fifth. The team finishes by the Hurricanes and Lady Canes advance both teams to the Class AAAA State Championship Meet on Saturday, November 3 in Carrollton. The Cartersville boys had seven runners in the top 19 of 47 runners on Thursday led by Bill Archer (4th, 16:52) and Alex Rios (5th, 16:54). Max Florence (10th, 17:12), Harrison Banks (13th, 17:27), Parker Breedlove (14th, 17:36), Levi Booth (16th, 17:48), and Colin McCann (19th, 18:01) rounded out the Hurricanes’ performances. Andres Sanchez of Sandy Creek won the individual title in 16:26. The Lady Canes were led by Alex Machado (6th, 20:57) and Vanna Beach (7th, 21:07). They were followed by teammates Alice Terry (19th, 22:23), Trista Kelly (21st, 22:33), Jaxiry Betancort (24th, 22:48), Trinity Atkins (27th, 23:14), and Jocelyn Blanchette (29th, 23:24). The girls’ race was won by Zaria White of Chapel Hill in 20:20 and included 43 runners. The Class AAAA Boys Championship race at Carrollton High School will be Saturday, November 3 at 12:30 p.m. The Class 4A Girls race will follow at 1:15 p.m.

The Woodland girls won the Region 7-AAAAA Championship Thursday held at Woodland High School and the Woodland boys team finished second. Those efforts send both the Lady Cats and Wildcats to the Class AAAAA State Championship in Carrollton on Friday, November 2. The Class AAAAA girls championship race will start at 11:15 a.m. preceded by the Class AAAAA boys’ championship race at 10:30 a.m. The Lady Cats took the Region 7AAAAA title with all five scoring runners finishing in the top five. The Wildcats were region runner-up to Rome and had five runners finish in the top 18 of 60 runners. McKenna Trapheagen won the girls’ race in 18:24. She was followed by teammates Angela Cochran (19:16), Carli Clymer (19:29), Baylee Evans (19:59), and Rylee Evans (20:13). Cheyenne Spinks placed seventh in 20:28 and Erica Boatner was 14th in 21:56. The East Paulding girls finished in second place, Rome was third, and Hiram placed fourth. Cass High’s Olivia Flynn was the only Lady Colonels’ runner. Flynn finished 29th of 49 runners in 23:29. Collin Jones of Carrollton won the boys’ meet in 16:49. He was 0:21 ahead of teammate Joshua Beam. The Trojans finished in third place and Hiram was fourth. Dylan Stermer placed fourth in the race in 17:18 to lead all Woodland runners. John Shropshire was seventh in 17:28. John Forsyth (16th, 18:27), Patrick Bollwerk (17th, 18:28), and Kobe Cochran (18th, 18:29) helped lead the Wildcats. Reece Mitchell (31st, 19:03) and Ian Van Order (40th, 19:31) rounded out the Woodland competitors. The Cass boys placed eighth, led by Prem Patel’s 28th place finish in 18:52. The remainder of the Colonels were Bryce Kresho (37th, 19:17), Craigory Chatman (54th, 21:53), Logan Van Stijn (56th, 22:01), and Brenden Hickman (59th, 23:30).
