The Woodland girls and the Cartersville boys had the top local performances Saturday in the 2018 Wingfoot Cross Country Classic hosted by Atlanta Track Club at Sam Smith Park. Led by McKenna Trapheagen, Woodland placed eighth in the girls championship division in 18:59 to lead the Lady Cats to a fourth place finish among 34 teams in the girls top division. The Marietta girls team won the championship race, followed by Marist and South Forsyth. Niki Narayani of the Webb School of Knoxville (TN) won the individual title in 18:12. Angela Cochran placed 23rd for Woodland in 19:30. Carli Clymer (54th, 20:17), Rylee Evans (55th, 20:18), Cheyenne Spinks (70th, 20:45), Baylee Evans (75th, 20:53), and Kamryn Krishnan (162nd, 22:11) rounded out the Lady Cats roster. Brentwood Academy won the boys’ championship race that included 36 of the top teams across the state and Southeast. Pope and South Forsyth finished second and third. East Coweta’s Kyle Harkabus was the individual champion in 15:46.40. The Cartersville boys placed ninth in the boys varsity race that was won by Richmond Hill. The Woodland boys finished 22nd in the 40-team division. Dawson County finished second and Daniel (SC) was third. Jalen Murray of Richmond Hill won the boys varsity division individual title in 16:29. Bill Archer ran 20th in 17:52 to lead Cartersville. He was followed by fellow Canes Max Florence (44th, 18:27), Alex Rios (61st, 18:38), Jacob Busek (94th, 19:05), Levi Booth (101st, 19:14), Colin McCann (111th, 19:25) and Parker Breedlove (144th, 19:54). John Shropshire led Woodland with a 59th place finish in 18:37. John Forsyth (100th, 19:14), Dylan Stermer (109th, 19:23), Reece Mitchell (136th, 19:46), Patrick Bollwerk (168th, 20:13), and McKinley Chappell followed for the Wildcats. Competiting as individuals, Prim Patel of Cass was 178th in 20:28 and Bryce Kresho was 208th in 21:10. Logan Van Stijn (263rd, 24:17) and Craigory Chatman (264th, 24:23) also ran for the Colonels. The Cartersville girls placed 14th of 34 teams in the girls varsity division. Alexander won the division, followed by Richmond Hill and Lassiter. Alex Machado paced the Lady Canes with a 31st place finish in 23:01. She was followed by teammates Vanna Beach (86th, 24:56), Trista Kelly (94th, 25:05), Alice Terry (109th, 25:26), Metzli Munoz (122nd, 25:43), and Jocelyn Blanchette (129th, 25:59). Cass was represented by Olivia Flynn (181st, 28:06), Emma Pirkle (226th, 41:20), and Jordan Danna (226th, 41:20). Cartersville boys placed second and Woodland boys fourth in the 10-team JV Blue 3K. Harrison Banks finished third and Banks Wilson ninth for Cartersville JV. Ian Van Order and Ben Novo were the top Woodland runners. Woodland girls, led by a 1-2 finish by Avery Hull and Mackenzie Stephenson placed third in the 8-team Girls JV Blue 3K. Cartersville girls were sixth led by Genry Apor. The races Saturday doubled for local teams as the Bartow County Championship with the Woodland girls and Cartersville boys taking the local titles. Next up is the Cass/Cartersville Invitational at Dellinger Park on October 2 starting at 4:30 p.m.

In recent years, Cartersville has not trailed very often — especially in the fourth quarter. But that was the case Friday night as the Hurricanes entered the game’s final 12 minutes trailing at Cedartown, 20-14. To their credit, the Canes handled the adversity and rallied in the fourth quarter for a 21-20 road win in their 2018 Region 5-AAAA opener. Quante Jennings — who had several key runs in the go-ahead drive — scored the game-tying touchdown with about eight minutes left in the game. The ensuing PAT by Oscar Hernandez gave Cartersville a one-point lead and the defense made it hold up down the stretch. Harrison Allen gave Cartersville a 7-0 lead with a three-yard touchdown run in the first quater. The scoring run capped a drive of just under 80 yards. Cedartown tied the game, however, as Taji Hudson scampered 21-yards on the Bulldogs’ initial drive. Following a fumble recovery by the Canes on a punt, Tee Web scrambled for a 21-yard score that gave the Canes a 14-7 lead in the final minutes of the first quarter. The Hurricanes’ defense picked off a red zone pass to halt the Bulldogs’ next drive. Allen made the interception after Cedartown had driven to the Cartersville 14 yard line. On Cedartown’s next possession, Hudson broke loose for a 57-yard scoring jaunt. The missed PAT, however, kept the Hurricanes in the lead 14-13 at halftime. In the third quarter, Cedartown took a 20-14 lead with a 92-yard pick six of a Tee Webb pass but the Canes survived with their fourth quarter scoring drive. The loss dropped Cedartown to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Region 5-AAAA. The Bulldogs travel to LaGrange next Friday. 2nd-ranked Cartersville (5-0, 1-0) hosts Central-Carroll next Friday at Weinman Stadium. NORTH MURRAY 23, ADAIRSVILLE 20 The visiting Mountaineers scored on a 2-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Preston Poag, Jr. to Landon Burrell as time expired Friday night to win 23-20 in shocking fashion at Adairsville. On the play before, Poag connected with Ladd McConkey to the two-yard line. That left the Mountaineers with a fourth-and-goal and no time outs. Poag somehow got his team lined up, set, and got the snap away for the game-winning score with just over two seconds remaining at the time of the snap. The play concluded a frantic final drive by the Mountaineers and a back-and-forth final quarter. The two teams traded first half field goals for a 3-3 tie at halftime as both defenses dominated play. Adairsville’s Emmanuel Lopez made a 43-yard field goal with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter for the game’s first points. Owen Hannah made a 41-yard field goal for North Murray with 1:49 left in the first half. Mason Boswell gave Adairsville a 10-3 lead with 1:41 remaining in the third quarter on a 7-yard run, but North Murray answered with a Poag to Landon Burrell touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to knot the score at 10-10. That set off a frantic fourth quarter that saw the lead exchanged four times. Lopez made a 39-yard field goal with 7:47 remaining to put the Tigers ahead 13-10, but Dante Tidwell answered for North Murray with a 13-yard run to cap an eight play, 60-yard scoring drive for a 17-13 Mountaineers’ lead. The North Murray touchdown was made possible after Poag connected with Burrell for a first down on a 4th-and-13 play. Adairsville answered again, however. B.J. Roper returned the ensuing kickoff near midfield to set up a rapid five-play, 53-yard scoring drive. The return was the second dramatic return for Roper in the final quarter. His first return helped set up the earlier field goal. Courtney Slocum then capped off the final Adairsville scoring drive with a 28-yard touchdown run. The PAT kick by Lopez had the Tigers leading 20-17 with 3:55 left in the game. After a short Adairsville kickoff and a return by the Mountaineers to their own 42, Poag’s passing and several key runs by Noah Lunsford and Dante Tidwell set up the dramatic winning play by North Murray with no time remaining. North Murray improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 6-AAA. The Mountaineers host Murray County next Friday. Adairsville (2-3, 1-2) will look to snap a two game skid next Friday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. HIRAM 35, WOODLAND 15 Woodland took an early lead Friday night, but Hiram answered with 29 unanswered points on their way to a 35-15 home win over the Wildcats. Woodland scored first on a 21-yard pass from Jakob Foss to Justice Carter with 3:27 remaining in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead. Hiram running backs Marcuis Fulks and Brian Maina then combined for four touchdowns as the Hornets’ offense had a successful night. A red zone strip sack in the second quarter and a red zone interception in the second half helped keep the Wildcats close. Woodland’s other points came on a 70-yard kickoff return by Blake Cash with 10 minutes remaining. The Wildcats added a two-point conversion pass from Titus Jones to Dylan Forman. Hiram improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Hornets travel to East Paulding next Friday. Woodland (4-1, 2-1) hosts No. 1 Rome next Friday. ROME 49, CASS 14 Cass fell to Rome Friday night in a one-sided final, 49-14, at Barron Stadium. Rome, No. 1 in Georgia’s Class AAAAA and ranked in the top 20 nationally, took a 35-0 first half lead to win comfortably. The win for Rome was the Wolves’ 32nd straight Cass managed a pair of scores to match the Wolves in the second half, but it was a night controlled for the most part by the Rome defense. The Rome defense held Cass to just 59 yards in the first half with two turnovers. Meanhwile Rome’s offense rolled up 289 yards with one fumble recovered by the Colonels’ Blake Carrington. Knox Kadum, Jamious Griffin, and Trey Lawrence contributed to a pair of Wolves’ touchdowns each. Kadum connected with Tyreke Griffin for a 25-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. That was followed by a touchdown run by Kadum, two scores by Griffin, and two TD runs by Trey Lawrence for a 42-0 Rome advantage. Cass scored on a 50-yard pass from Logan Nelson to Malik Grimes with 4:19 remaining in the third quarter. Then the Colonels’ Nic Wallin completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Javen Bridges with 5:30 left in the fourth quarter to cap an 11-play, 85-yard scoring drive and make the score 42-14. Maliek Ash added a final touchdown for Rome with 18 seconds remaining. Rome improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Wolves play at Woodland next Friday. Cass (1-4, 0-3) hosts 5th-ranked Carrollton next Friday.

Cartersville softball earned a non-region shutout victory Friday night over visiting North Cobb, 8-0. The Lady Canes scored five times in the first and added three runs in the second for all the runs they would need. Colbi Ballard (photo) tossed a complete-game, three-hitter with three walks and three strikeouts for the Hurricanes. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and four RBI to pace the offense. Presley Edwards also had two hits including a double and one RBI. Cio Seigler doubled and AnnaKate McElhaney had the other Lady Canes’ hit. Cartersville also took advantage of the Warriors on the bases with four steals. Ballard, Emma Frothingham, AnnaKate McElhaney, and Hope Short all swiped bases in the win. The loss dropped North Cobb to 8-15 on the season. The Lady Canes improved their season mark to 9-11 and play at Chapel Hill on Monday. LASSITER HALTS LADY CATS’ STREAK Woodland softball had an 11-game win streak stopped by Class AAAAAAA Lassiter Friday night, 13-1 in four innings. The visiting Trojans scored in each inning and pounded out 13 hits. Woodland managed a single run in the second inning on an RBI double by Skylar Chappell. Bella Carnes had the only other Lady Cats’ hit. Lassiter improved to 17-4 on the season. The loss leaves Woodland with a 17-6 season mark. The Lady Cats return to Region 7-AAAAA action Monday at Rome at 5:30 p.m. Woodland hosts Hiram Tuesday and plays at Paulding County on Thursday.

Woodland softball continued its winning ways Thursday night with a 9-4 victory over visiting Villa Rica in a Region 7-AAAAA matchup. Villa Rica took a brief 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning, but Woodland scored in each of its first five frames to eventually take control of the contest. Woodland led 4-2 heading to the fourth inning — and after Villa Rica tied the game 4-4 in the top of the fourth — the host Lady Cats scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-4 advantage. Woodland added an insurance run in the fifth. The Woodland bats out-dueled Villa Rica 13 hits to four. Both teams committed four errors. Skylar Chappell (photo) had three hits and two RBI for Woodland. Bella Carnes also finished with three hits. Morgan Cooper drove home three runs with two hits. Caroline Higdon added a pair of hits and one RBI. Jordan Duck, Kendyl Hardin, and Hannah Miller each had one hit. Morgan Bailey contributed one RBI. Sarah Baynard (7 IP, 4R, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) collected the pitching win with a complete game effort. All runs against her were unearned. The loss dropped Villa Rica to 11-10 overall and 7-8 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (17-5, 11-2), who has now won 11-straight games, steps out of region play Friday to host Lassiter at 5:30 p.m. Next week, the Lady Cats will travel to Rome Monday, host Hiram Tuesday, and close out the regular season at Paulding County Thursday. ADAIRSVILLE 2, LFO 0 The Lady Tigers broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the third inning and pitcher Taylor Rhoades made the lead stand up with a 2-0 Region 6-AAA shutout. Rhoades earned the complete-game pitching win by scattering four hits and a walk across seven innings of work. She struck out four. Sierra Tanner was the only Adairsville batter with two hits. Breeana Wilson contributed a double. Havyn Issace drove in a run with a triple and a sacrifice. Victoria O’Neal had a hit and one RBI. Natalie Burrow had the other Lady Tigers’ hit. The loss saw Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe’s season mark fall to 9-14 overall and 3-13 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville finished the regular season with a 7-19 overall record and was 5-11 in region action. HIRAM 7, CASS 2 Cass softball lost a Region 7-AAAAA contest Thursday night at Hiram, 7-2. Hiram took a 6-0 lead through four innings to gain control of the contest early. The Lady Colonels scored their two runs in the top of the fifth to narrow the margin to 6-2 before the host Hornets added a run in the bottom of the frame. Kylee Hembree (3 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 3BB, 1K) and Macenzie Dougharty (3 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1K) split the pitching duties for Cass. Dougharty had one of the Lady Colonels’ four hits with a double and two RBI. Jaden Musacchio, Haley Smith, and Rachael Lee had the other Cass base hits. Hiram improved to 11-8-1 overall and 6-7 in region play. Cass (3-20, 3-10) travels to Paulding County Monday at 5:55 p.m. and will host East Paulding and Carrollton Tuesday and Thursday.

Cartersville volleyball won a pair of matches Thursday evening in Chatsworth finishing off the host Murray County Indians 25-17, 25-17 and later defeating Dalton 25-15, 25-11. “We executed very well all night,” said Cartersville head coach Dustin Cothran. “We seved well and didn’t make many errors. Anna Mathis and Anna Grace Brock were dialed in with their serve receiving,” he continued. “ Cristina Cruz stepped up in the second match to put some balls away and London Shaw made some impressive blocks and kills.” Nedu Evans totaled 26 kills, six aces, and 15 digs in the four sets Thursday. Bekah Stevens contributed 22 kills, six digs, and 10 aces. Anna Mathis contributed nine digs against Dalton and Grace Hunter totaled 71 assists and nine aces in the two matches. Cartersville (19-11) hosts North Paulding Tuesday, October 2 for their Senior Night recognition. The match begins at 5 p.m. CASS WINS AT ARMUCHEE Cass volleyball needed three sets, but captured a non-region road victory at Armuchee Thursday evening in Rome. Armuchee won the opening set 25-21, but the Lady Colonels responded with wins in the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-16. WOODLAND SPLITS MATCHES AT SPRAYBERRY Woodland volleyball split a pair of non-region matches Thursday evening at Sprayberry High School in Cobb County. The Lady Cats topped Sprayberry in their opener 25-20 and 25-19. Macey Vaughn had ten assists. Caroline Gore contributed seven kills, seven digs, and two aces. Grace Webb had two kills, two blocks, and an assist, while Sydney Molinaro finished with five kills. East Coweta defeated Woodland 25-9 and 25-10. Gore had four kills and four digs. Molinaro added a kill and three blocks. Vaughn had five assists and one ace. Woodland hosts Rome and Cass Tuesday and the Lady Cats will recognize their 2018 seniors.

The Woodland girls cross country team is ranked second in the Georgia Week 5 Class AAAAA state rankings released this week by MileSplit.com. The Lady Cats also moved up one spot in the Georgia All-Classification rankings to third. McIntosh is ranked first in Class AAAAA. Starrs Mill, Union Grove, and Riverwood follow in spots three through five. Grady, Whitewater, Decatur, Clarke Central, and Jones County round out the top ten. In the All-Class rankings, the Woodland girls are behind Marietta and Marist. South Forsyth and McIntosh round out the top five. The Cartersville boys cross country team moved up one spot to 7th in the Georgia Week 5 Class AAAA state rankings released this week by MileSplit.com. The Hurricanes trail St. Pius X, Marist, North Oconee, Blessed Trinity, Chestatee, and White County in the rankings. Oconee County, Woodward Academy, and Pickens round out the top ten. Woodland softball raced to a 7-0 lead through three innings Tuesday night on their way to a dominating 15-5 Region 7-AAAAA win at Cass. The Lady Cats extended their current win streak to 10 straight and have now won 15 of 16, including ten consecutive region games. Woodland’s Skylar Chappell had three hits and two RBI as the Lady Cats out hit the Colonels 17 to six. Ansley Evans also had three hits for Woodland. Cartersville volleyball swept to straight set victories over LaGrange and Sandy Creek Tuesday evening in Tyrone to secure the Region 5-AAAA regular season title and the right to host the region playoff finals. The Lady Canes beat LaGrange 25-3 and 25-18 before taking down the host Patriots 25-16 and 27-25. Cartersville survived a set point in the finale’ before taking the victory. “We played well in stretches,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “We had some letdowns during the night, and that’s going to happen, but we responded well when the match (vs. Sandy Creek) got tight.” Bekah Stevens had seven aces against LaGrange. Grace Hunter contributed four aces and 14 assists. Nedu Evans had 10 kills and a pair of aces. Anna Mathis added three aces. Against Sandy Creek, Evans totaled 12 kills, five digs, and two aces. Stevens had eight kills, three assists, and three aces. Hunter added 35 assists and three aces. Mathis totaled 10 digs. The Canes 17-11 (6-0) will travel to Murray County to play the hosts and Dalton on Thursday. CASS DROPS AREA MATCHES AT ROME The Lady Colonels lost two area volleyball matches Tuesday night at Rome High School, falling in a three-set battle with Carrollton and in straight sets to the hosts. Cass edged Carrollton 25-23 in the opening set, but lost the next two sets to the Trojans 25-19 and 25-18. Rome swept the Colonels 25-10 and 25-12. With the National League West up for grabs down the stretch, the Los Angeles Dodgers overpowered the Colorado Rockies Monday night, 8-2 at Dodger Stadium. The one-sided victory put the Dodgers a half-game above the Rockies in the division race with the two contenders set to continue the three-game series Tuesday and Wednesday. Cartersville native Sam Howard was one of five Rockies’ pitchers utilized in the game. Starter Jon Gray suffered the loss after surrendering six earned runs in just two innings of work. Harrison Musgrave, D.J. Johnson, and Bryan Shaw also worked in relief for Colorado. Howard worked a scoreless eighth inning, but did allow a hit, a walk and a hit batsman. He also recorded his first Major League strikeout against Matt Kemp who went down swinging on a 3-2 pitch with one out and one on base. Howard managed to get out of his bases loaded situation in the frame by getting Max Muncy to pop up on the infield. Monday was the 25-year-old southpaw’s third-ever MLB appearance and his first against the Dodgers. He has now worked three Major League innings without allowing a run. Howard made 21 starts in 2018 for the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. He finished with a 3-8 mark and worked 96 innings with a 5.06 ERA. He fanned 80 and walked only 34.

Woodland softball continued its hot streak Monday night with a 9-1 home win in five innings over the Kell Longhorns. The Lady Cats have now won nine in a row and 14 of their last 15. They have also won nine straight Region 7-AAAAA games after an 0-2 start in the league. Woodland took a 9-0 lead in the first three innings Monday night and pitcher Sarah Baynard kept Kell off the scoreboard except for a single run in the top of the fourth inning. Baynard allowed only five hits and one walk in earning the pitching win. The lone run was earned and she recorded one strikeout. Hannah Miller was 2-for-3 for Woodland with one RBI. Jordan Duck was also 2-for-3. Six other Lady Cats had one hit each including triples by Morgan Bailey and Skylar Chappell (2 RBI). Ansley Evans (RBI), Caroline Higdon (RBI), Kendyl Hardin, and Bella Carnes added one hit apiece. Carnes, Bailey, and Morgan Cooper each stole a base. The loss drops Kell to 8-7 overall and 8-6 in region action. Woodland (15-5, 9-2) plays at Cass Tuesday before hosting Villa Rica Thursday and Lassiter Friday. All three games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. starts. HARALSON CO. 10, ADAIRSVILLE 6 Visiting Haralson County broke open a tight game with six runs over the final three innings in a 10-6 win Monday night at Adairsville. The two teams went to the fifth inning tied 4-4 after Adairsville scored two runs in both the first and fourth innings. Haralson Co. scored four times in the top of the second for a 4-2 lead at the time. The visiting Rebels then made their late scoring run to take a 10-4 lead. The Lady Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of hits, a walk, and an error, but it wasn’t enough. Adairsville committed eight errors in the game. Only four of the Haralson County runs were earned. Victoria O’Neal (4 IP, 5R, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 5K) and Taylor Rhoades (3 IP, 5R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K) split the pitching duties for the Tigers. Sierra Tanner paced the Adairsville offense with four hits including a double and one RBI. Sadye Johnson added two hits and two RBI including a first inning, solo home run. Havyn Isaac (RBI), Natalie Burrow (RBI), and Chloe Souders had the other Lady Tigers’ hits. O’Neal drove in a run. 10th-ranked Haralson improved to 14-6 overall and 9-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (5-19, 3-11) wraps up its regular season Thursday at home against Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe.
