Former Cartersville baseball players Sam Howard and Connor Justus continue to perform with their respective MLB rosters in Spring Training games in Arizona while several locals also contributed with their college baseball programs around the Southeast. The baseball update for 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' for the week ending Sunday, March 18. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies (5th yr. pro; Georgia Southern Univ.; Cartersville HS)…faced 11 batters and tossed three scoreless innings in the Rockies 13-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday, March 11. Howard entered in the fifth inning with the Rockies trailing 13-4. He allowed a couple of hits with no walks and struck out four. The southpaw also picked up his second hold in Cactus League action by recording two outs in the eighth inning without allowing a run in a 10-8 loss last Thursday to the L.A. Angels. Howard is 1-0 in five relief appearances this Spring with two holds, a 1.86 ERA, three walks, 10 strikeouts, and 9.2 innings of work. Opponents have a .171 batting average against him and his WHIP is down to 0.93. The Rockies are 9-14 in Cactus League play through Sunday’s games. CONNOR JUSTUS — Los Angeles Angels (3rd year pro; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… Justus entered as a pinch runner in the sixth inning, remained in the game at shortstop, and had a hit in his plate appearance but the Angels lost last Thursday to the Chicago White Sox 7-2. Justus is now 2-for-8 for a .250 batting average with the major league club in Cactus League games. The Angels are 10-15 this Spring through Sunday’s games. COLLEGE BASEBALL BRANDON ALLEN — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Woodland HS)… scored a run in three game appearances and three at-bats in last week’s four-game series with West Georgia Tech CC. The Chargers (20-8, 6-3 GCAA) dropped last Tuesday’s series opener, but won the last three games of the series. GHC plays four games with Gordon State this week. The Chargers are scheduled to host Gordon State Tuesday at LakePoint and play a single game Thursday in Barnesville and a doubleheader on the road Saturday. ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Soph., LHP, Cartersville HS)… worked 3 and one-third innings last Tuesday to earn a pitching win in relief over Georgia Tech. Anderson allowed three earned runs on two hits, a walk, and a hit batsman. He entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs in the second inning and recorded one out in the fifth. Anderson fanned three of the 13 Yellow Jackets he faced. Saturday, he entered in the fifth inning of an 11-5 Southeastern Conference win over visiting Texas A&M. The southpaw recorded two outs in the fifth and one more in the sixth allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk. Auburn (19-2, 2-1) play at Georgia Tech Tuesday night and travel to Kentucky for a three-game SEC series Friday through Sunday. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Fr., 1B/DH, Cass HS)… delivered a two-RBI pinch hit double Sunday in his only plate appearance of the week. The sixth inning hit put the Mountain Lions ahead 4-3 at the time, but Francis Marion came-from-behind to win 7-6 in 10 innings. The loss left YHC 2-2 for the week with a non-conference home win over Lenoir-Rhyne and a win in one of three Peach Belt Conference games at Francis Marion. Young Harris (12-13, 7-8) travels to Truett-McConnell Wednesday and hosts 6th-ranked Flagler College Friday through Sunday. BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Sr., OF, Cass HS)… went 2-for-9 with a double in this past weekend’s home three game series with Belmont Abbey College. He scored one run and walked twice in the series as his Saints were swept. Etheridge has a .263 batting average in 26 starts and 80 at-bats this season. Limestone (11-15, 3-6) has lost eight of the last nine games and will try to bounce back this week with a home game against Anderson (SC) University Wednesday night and a trip to Wilson, NC to take on Barton College in a three-game series Friday and Saturday. CODY JOHNSON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cass HS)… recorded the final three outs last Tuesday in a 16-6 Chargers’ loss at West Georgia Tech. Johnson allowed four runs (none earned), on a pair of hits and two walks. GHC responded Friday and Saturday to win the next three games and take three of four in the GCAA series. GHC (20-8, 6-3) plays four games with Gordon State this week. The Chargers are scheduled to host the Highlanders Tuesday at LakePoint and play a single game Thursday in Barnesville and a doubleheader on the road Saturday. SEAN McDERMOTT — Mercer University (Jr., 1B/DH, Adairsville HS)… sharing some time at first base, McDermott had one hit in six at-bats across three game appearances this past week. The hit came last Wednesday in an 11-8 home win over Georgia Southern. He also saw action in two of the Bears’ three weekend wins over Eastern Kentucky. Mercer (16-5) plays at Georgia Tech Wednesday night before opening Southern Conference play with a home weekend series with Wofford. HUNTER REAID — Shorter University (Fr., C, Woodland HS)… started Friday’s 9-2 loss and Game 1 of a doubleheader. He also appeared in Saturday’s game with West Georgia as the Hawks lost two-of-three in the Gulf South Conference series. Reaid was 1-for-4 at the plate and scored one run in the series. His season batting average is now .318 in six starts and 22 at-bats. Defensively, the catcher has not made an error in 51 total chances. Shorter (10-15, 3-9) entertains Emmanuel College Tuesday afternoon and will travel to Cleveland, MS for a three game series at No. 1-ranked Delta State University Saturday and Sunday. SAM SEAMAN — Gordon State CC (Fr., Inf./DH, Adairsville HS)… went 2-for-8 with a walk and scored two runs in a pair of starts as designated hitter for the Highlanders last Tuesday and Thursday. He also stole a base. Gordon lost both games, but evened the series with ABAC with wins in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday and on Saturday. GSCC (17-12, 3-2) has a four-game conference series with Georgia Highlands this week. Tuesday’s game is at LakePoint in Emerson. Thursday’s game and Saturday’s doubleheader will be in Barnesville. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… hit safely in three of four games this past week and was 3-for-10 at the plate with a double, a sacrifice, three walks, and a run scored. The Mountain Lions defeated Lenoir-Rhyne last Wednesday and won one of three conference games over the weekend at Francis Marion. Washington’s batting average is currently .246 in 20 starts and 57 at-bats. Young Harris (12-13, 7-8 Peach Belt Conference) makes the short trip to Truett-McConnell University Wednesday for a non-conference game and hosts 6th-ranked Flagler College Friday through Sunday in a three-game PBC series.

The track and field teams of Cass and Cartersville High School had members compete in Saturday’s 2018 Mohawk-Warrior Invitational at Gordon Central High School. Dalton won both the girls and boys titles with Riverdale and Rockmart placing second and third in both genders. The Calhoun girls placed fourth. Host Gordon Central was fourth in the boys’ meet. The Cass girls were ninth in the 11-team field. The Cass boys placed seventh. Cartersville fielded a partial team. Also Saturday at the Roswell Relays at Roswell High School, the Woodland girls placed sixth and the Woodland boys were seventh. Cambridge won the 18-team girls meet, followed by Archer, Cherokee, Douglas County, and Centennial. Archer won the boys title at Roswell followed by Cherokee, Hiram, Roswell, and Cambridge. - Chargers sweep Saturday doubleheader
The Georgia Highlands College baseball team swept a home, conference doubleheader with West Georgia Tech Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson to win this week’s four-game series with the Golden Knights three games to one. West Georgia Tech won the series opener Tuesday in Carrollton, but the Chargers took the final three games at LakePoint with a 13-12 win Friday night and Saturday’s 4-1 and 5-1 sweep. In Saturday’s opener, Drew Wilson tossed a complete game two hitter to control the Knights’ bats while four different Chargers drove in one run each. GHC led 1-0 after two innings and scored three times in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage. The lone WGTCC run was scored in the sixth. Austin Foster and Cameron Hearn had RBI singles for the Chargers. Nick Piccapietra doubled home a run and Skylar McPhee drove in a run with a groundout. In the second game Saturday, Tyler Sellers tossed a complete game four hitter for the Chargers. The lone run against him was unearned. All the runs of Game 2 were scored in the third inning. West Georgia Tech (10-19, 1-8) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame before Piccapietra tied the game in the bottom of the third with a line drive RBI single. Hearn followed with a three-run homer and Parker Orr added a solo blast as the Chargers took a 5-1 lead. With the their third straight conference win, Georgia Highlands (20-8, 6-3) moves into second place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. The Chargers are one-half game ahead of South Georgia and trail conference leading East Georgia by two games.
- Cartersville soccer teams split matches at Sandy Creek
The Cartersville High School soccer teams split a pair of Region 5-AAAA matches Friday night at Sandy Creek. The Canes blanked the Patriots 9-0, but the Lady Canes lost 4-2. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 9, SANDY CREEK 0 The Hurricanes built a 4-0 lead in the first half on a pair of goals by Pedro Ghanem and single tallies by Eilan Abeja and James Chege. Brady Craig contributed a pair of first half assists as Cartersville took control early. In the second half, Jonathan Cruz assisted on goals by Jair Ramos and Ghanem. Craig scored a goal off a feed from Abeja. Ghanem assisted on a Ramos goal and Joel Zazueta assisted on a goal by Houston Read. The loss dropped Sandy Creek’s season mark to 1-6-1 overall and 1-3 in region play. Cartersville (6-4, 3-0 Region 5-AAAA) hosts Chapel Hill Tuesday. SANDY CREEK GIRLS 4, CARTERSVILLE 2 Sandy Creek led 3-0 at halftime, but the Lady Canes narrowed the margin to 3-2 with approximately 10 minutes remaining in the game. Micah Vance and Kalyn Donegan scored the Cartersville goals. The Lady Patriots (3-5, 2-2) responded with an insurance goal in the final minutes to secure the Region 5-AAAA match. Cartersville (4-4, 2-1) entertains Chapel Hill Tuesday at 6 p.m.
- Chargers rebound to even series with extra inning victory
Georgia Highlands scored the final seven runs of the game and walked off with a tenth inning run and a 13-12 win to even their series with West Georgia Tech Friday night at LakePoint. West Georgia Tech won the opener of the series Tuesday in Carrollton 16-6. The final two games of the four-game series are set for a doubleheader Saturday at LakePoint. In the high-scoring affair, the Chargers trailed 6-2 through three innings, but narrowed the margin to 8-6 after five frames. West Georgia Tech pushed their lead to 12-6 in the sixth inning before Georgia Highlands rallied to send the game to extra innings with four runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth inning. Skylar McPhee lined a single into center field to start the Chargers’ tenth inning and Austin Foster reached on a bunt single to set up Bryson Horne’s RBI double for the walk-off victory. The come-from-behind win was made possible by an impressive relief pitching performance by Sam Warren (4 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 5K). Warren shut down the visiting Golden Knights from the seventh inning forward to keep the Chargers in contention. Georgia Highlands out hit West Georgia Tech 19 to 11. Zach Miller had two hits including a homer with three RBI and a pair of walks to set the pace for the Chargers. Skylar McPhee finished with four hits including a double and one RBI. Nick Piccapietra had a double and one RBI amidst his three hits. Bryson Horne also had three hits including a double and two RBI. Willis Kemp contributed two hits and two RBI. Cameron Hearn had two hits and one RBI. Austin Foster added two hits with one RBI and Parker Orr blasted a solo home run. The Chargers (18-8, 4-3 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) and West Georgia Tech (10-17, 1-6) wrap up their four-game conference series Saturday with a doubleheader at LakePoint starting at 1 p.m.

The Woodland girls tennis team lost 5-4 to Buford in both teams’ first match at the DECO Turf Invitational Tournament in Chattanooga. Utilizing the collegiate nine-point scoring format, Buford won all three doubles sets and took the top two singles lines to secure the win. - Woodland cruises past Cass
The Woodland bats rapped out 14 hits and the Wildcats struck for 15 runs Friday night in a five-inning, 15-2 Region 7-AAAAA win over county-rival Cass at the Ballpark at Woodland. Woodland pitcher Kenny Jinks limited Cass to only two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks. He fanned nine. Garrett Cornett was 4-for-4 for the Wildcats at the plate with one RBI. Toby Queen followed with three hits and one RBI. Koby Stansel had two hits, while Dylan Webb (2 RBI), Bryce Evans (2 RBI), Chris Mills (triple, 4 RBI), Ben Ammons, and Jordan Lee contributed one hit each. Marco Haro added one RBI for Woodland. Cass starting pitcher, Steven Spell (2.2 IP, 15R, 12ER, 14H, 1BB, 5K), was roughed up in the loss. Logan Nelson (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 1K) retired the final four outs on the mound for the Colonels. Gavin Young had two hits and one RBI for Cass. Matt Shook added a hit and one RBI. Evan Hinton had the other Colonels’ base hit. Woodland (8-7, 1-0) and Cass (7-8, 1-2) will play the second game of their two-game series Monday at Cass at 5:55 p.m.
- 2nd-ranked Ringgold wins at Adairsville
The visiting Class AAA 2nd-ranked Ringgold Tigers took a 7-0 lead at Adairsville Friday night through the top of the third inning and held off their hosts for an 11-2 Region 6-AAA win. Ringgold scored three runs in the top of the first, added a run in the second, and posted another three-run inning in the third for their early advantage. Adairsville narrowed the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the third, but Ringgold added four more runs down the stretch for their nine-run win. Holden Tucker and Dalton Schley had three hits each to lead Ringgold’s 14-hit attack. Three other Ringgold hitters — Wyatt Tennant, Gavin Hollis, and Nathan Camp — added two hits apiece. Tennant (4 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher for Ringgold. Adairsville starting pitcher Garrett Mishoe (3 IP, 7R, 4ER, 6H, 4BB, 3K) suffered the loss. Trace Still (2.2 IP, 3ER, 0BB, 2K) and Levi Blackwell (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) also pitched. Kyler Pelfrey had two hits including a double for Adairsville. Corey Nation also had two hits. Noah Dutton, Mishoe, and Caden Gibbs had the other Adairsville base hits. Ringgold improved to 11-4 overall and stayed unbeaten in Region 6-AAA at 3-0. Adairsville (9-4, 2-1) returns to the diamond Tuesday at Haralson County at 5:55 p.m.
- Canes blank second straight region foe
Cartersville pitchers Levi Ayers, Jake Gooch, and J.P. Martin combined for a three-hit shutout Friday as the Hurricanes blanked Chapel Hill 6-0 at Richard Bell Field. The win marked the second straight region shutout and pitching gem for the Cartersville pitching staff. Ayers (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 2K) started on the bump and earned the win. Gooch (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 3K) worked middle relief and Martin (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) needed only five pitches to close out the game. Gooch singled and later scored on a wild pitch in the second inning to put the Canes on top 1-0 and Anthony Seigler hit a two-run homer in the third inning for a 3-0 advantage. In the fifth inning, Jordan Wilkie drove in a run with a single to right field and Martin followed with a two-RBI hit to left field and a 6-0 Canes’ lead. Gooch was the only Cartersville hitter with two hits. Seigler (HR), Mason Barnett (double), Chandler Tromza, Josh Davis, Wilkie, and Martin had the other Canes’ hits. The loss dropped Chapel Hill to 8-10 overall and 1-3 overall. Cartersville (12-5, 2-0) plays at Cedartown Tuesday, hosts LaGrange Thursday, and travels to Troup County Friday. All games start at 5:55 p.m.
- Cartersville track and field teams second at Darlington six-team meet
The Cartersville girls and boys track and field teams finished second on Thursday evening at the six-team Darlington meet in Rome. Pepperell won the girls and boys divisions with Coosa girls and boys finishing third and the Darlington teams fourth. - Tigers win at North Murray
The Adairsville Tigers scored at least one run in each of the first four innings Thursday night at North Murray, then held on for a 5-4 Region 6-AAA win over the host Mountaineers in Chatsworth. Starter Caden Gibbs (5 IP, 4R, 2ER, 8H, 2BB, 4K) picked up the pitching victory for the Tigers. Chase Horn (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) delivered a save by retiring the final six outs. Adairsville trailed 2-1 after one inning, but scored twice in the second inning and added single runs in the next two frames to lead 5-2 after four innings. North Murray threatened with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Horn was able to squelch the Mountaineers at the end. Four different Tigers had two hits in the victory. Kyler Pelfrey (triple), Noah Dutton (RBI), Halen Huskins, and Gibbs (double) finished with two hits each. Corey Nation added a hit with a stolen base and Trace Still hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. North Murray falls to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (9-3, 2-0) hosts Ringgold in another region game Friday at 5:55 p.m.
- Four locals play in NW Georgia Senior Girls Hoops All-Star Game
Four local high school girls basketball players participated Thursday night in the Northwest Georgia Senior All-Star Game played at the Floyd Campus of Georgia Highlands College. Cass seniors Kyla Michienzi and Chanel Clemmons played on the South team, while Woodland senior Whitney Harris and Adairsville senior Josie Summerville participated on the North squad. The South team won the game, 78-64. Michienzi finished with five points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. Clemmons contributed four points, five boards, and four blocks.
