- Tigers top Model in opener
The Adairsville baseball team posted eight runs across the first four innings Wednesday night as the Tigers defeated visiting Model, 8-3 to open the 2018 season. Tigers’ pitcher Caden Gibbs (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) picked up the win. Chase Horn (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 6K) closed out the game. B.J. Roper had three hits at the top of the Tigers’ order and scored twice. Halen Huskins drove in a run with two hits. Hunter Hice, Trace Still, Garrett Mishoe, and Kyler Pelfrey had one hit and one RBI each. Horn had the other Tigers’ hit. Adairsville (1-0) plays at Cass Friday.
- Canes blank Sequoyah to open season
Three Cartersville pitchers combined to throw a shutout Wednesday as the Hurricanes opened the 2018 season with a 3-0 shutout at Sequoyah. Devin Warner blasted a two-run homer in the third inning to score Preston Welchel who had singled earlier. Anthony Seigler scored the Canes’ other run on a flyout in the sixth off the bat of Jake Gooch. Mason Barnett (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 7K) started on the mound for Cartersville. Levi Ayers (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) worked the middle innings and Seigler (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) closed out the victory for the Hurricanes. The Cartersville pitching trio did not issue a walk. Pitching was strong for both sides as Canes’ pitchers combined to fan eleven and Chiefs’ pitchers sat down nine. Clemson commit Justin Wrobleski (3 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 5K) suffered the pitching loss for Sequoyah. Nick Fagerburg (3 IP, 1ER, 0H, 2BB, 2K) and Brett Wissell (1 IP, 2K) also pitched. Tanner Carruth, Alejandro Morales, and Hunter Long had the only hits for Sequoyah — all singles. Cartersville (1-0) hosts Kennesaw Mountain Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Lambert Saturday at at 12 noon at Richard Bell Field.

CARTERSVILLE BOYS 5, MURRAY COUNTY 0 Cartersville’s Will Allen, Matthew Slocum, and Griffin Shaw each won opening day singles matches, while the doubles teams of Juan Azaueta / Davis Edwards and Ivy Nelson / Ross Norword also took straight sets victories as the Canes made it a clean sweep of Murray County to open the 2018 season. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, MURRAY COUNTY 0 Lady Canes’ Ashley Popham, Emma McCary, and Ansley Thompson all won singles matches 6-0, 6-0 and the doubles teams of Jordan Ross / Lydia Wiedetz and Alice Terry / Chloe Satterfield won in straight sets.

The Cartersville soccer teams swept Troup County Tuesday night. Cass swept visiting Cedartown, and the Adairsville teams split with Gordon Central in local high school soccer action around the county. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 10, TROUP CO. 0 Lady Canes’ senior Marissa Mowry scored four goals, while sophomores Micah Vance and Linet Chege found the back of the net twice as Cartersville cruised to a Region 5-AAAA victory. Rebecca Hays and Ansley Roper added the other Lady Canes’ goals. Cartersville (2-0, 1-0) plays at Chestatee Friday at 6 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 9, TROUP CO. 0 Led by sophomore Pedro Ghanem’s six goals, the Canes won their Region 5-AAAA opener Tuesday night. Bill Archer scored twice and Grant Farmer added a goal for Cartersville (2-1, 1-0). Ethan Eckert earned the shutout in net for the Hurricanes. Cartersville plays at Chestatee on Friday at 8 p.m. CASS GIRLS 10, CEDARTOWN 1 Logan Vermaas scored three goals and Mattie Shook scored twice to help lead the Lady Colonels to their first win of the year Tuesday night at home. Brittney Ochoa, Leidi Torres, Macy Wright, Jocelyn Pineda, and Lupita Pineda each added a goal to round out the Cass scoring. Lupita Pineda and Kinzie Tompkins finished with a pair of assists each. Olivia Flynn and Hannah Johnson were each credited with an assist. Cass (1-2) plays at Sprayberry Friday at 6 p.m. CASS BOYS 6, CEDARTOWN 1 The Colonels broke open a close contest in the final eight minutes Tuesday night to put away visiting Cedartown, 6-1. The Bulldogs led 1-0 early, but Cass evened the score at the intermission on a goal by Julio Medina off an assist from Anthony Robledo. The Colonels took a 2-1 lead early in the second half on a Carlos Perez goal from Robledo and the score remained that close until a late Cass scoring surge. Isai Romero picked up the win in net for the Colonels, recording 12 saves. Two goals by Robledo, one more by Medina, and one by Kevin Polo helped the Colonels pull away late. Jonathan Tong was credited with an assist on one of the Robledo scores. Cass (1-2) travels to Sprayberry Friday. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 4, GORDON CENTRAL 0 Emily Collum scored two goals while Gillian Johnson and Chloe Cochran added one each as the Lady Tigers blanked Gordon Central, 4-0. Lauren Stephenson assisted on the first of Collum’s goals. Adairsville’s Havyn Isaac earned the shutout as the Lady Tigers’ goalkeeper. Adairsville (1-0) travels to Dalton Thursday. - Indians top Woodland in season opener
The Woodland baseball team fell behind early Tuesday evening and could not recover in an 8-4 non-region home loss to Armuchee. The Wildcats out-hit the Indians nine to six, but struggled to push runs across the plate. Bleu Swanson drove in three runs and scored three runs himself to lead the Indians attack. Jacob Stanley had two hits for Armuchee (1-0) including a double and one RBI. Koby Stansel and Tyler Dilcher (RBI) had two hits apiece for Woodland. Bailey Ward and Bryce Evans drove in one run and had one hit. Dylan Webb, Marco Haro, and Garrett Cornett had the other Woodland base hits. Stansel (4IP, 7R, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 7K) started on the mound for Woodland and suffered the pitching loss. Ben Ammons (2IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) and Seth McGill (1IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB) pitched in relief for the Wildcats. Woodland (0-1) plays at Rockmart Monday at 5:30 p.m. and at Armuchee next Tuesday at 4 p.m.
- Chargers fall behind early in loss to CSCC
Georgia Highlands baseball fell behind early Tuesday afternoon and was unable to recover in a 6-1 loss to Cleveland State CC at LakePoint in Emerson. Noah Hill drove in one run and had four hits to spark the visiting Cougars’ offense. Logan Peterson also had a three-hit day for Cleveland State. Ryan Inches (5 IP, 1ER, 5H, 2BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win for CSCC. The Cougars used four other pitchers for one inning each in innings six through nine. Georgia Highlands managed to plate only one run in the fifth inning after falling behind 5-0. Zach Miller was the only Charger with two hits. Brandon Allen drove in a run and Skylar McPhee added a double. Cameron Hearn and Miller each stole a base. Chargers’ starter Zach Fordham (2.1 IP, 2ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Georgia Highlands utilized six other pitchers in short stints. GHC (6-3) hosts Lincoln Trail CC (IL) Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series. The series includes a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 12 noon.

BASKETBALL RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored 16 points with four rebounds, three assists, and one steal in a 71-69 win last Wednesday at Lander University. He then scored 12 points with five rebounds, five assists, and four steals in a 90-54 home blowout over University of North Georgia. FMU (15-7, 10-7 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Young Harris College Monday and Augusta University Wednesday before traveling to Flagler College Saturday. All three are conference games. KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored five points with four rebounds in a 56-55 home loss to Brenau University last Monday. She then scored two points and grabbed five rebounds last Thursday in a 78-62 home win over Brewton-Parker College. MGSU (6-17, 3-10 Southern States Athletic Conference) plays at Bethel (TN) University Thursday and at Martin Methodist (TN) on Saturday. JANA MORNING — Berry College (Fr., G, Cass HS)… started and totaled 14 points with four rebounds, one assist, and seven steals in losses at Centre College (KY) and Sewanee University (TN) Friday and Sunday. The Vikings (10-13, 5-8 Southern Athletic Association) wrap up the regular season this week at home against Wesleyan Tuesday and Oglethorpe University Saturday. The SAA Tournament is the following week. A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State Universitiy (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored 28 points in an 81-72 loss at Grambling State last Monday and scored 22 more in a home 94-90 overtime win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday. Mosby added 11 rebounds, 13 assists, one block, and four steals in the two games. ASU (8-17, 4-8 Southwestern Athletic Conference) hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff Monday night and travels to Alabama A&M on Saturday. Mosby leads the SWAC in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.3-1, and is averaging team highs in points (14.3), assists (3.6), steals (1.4), 3-point percentage (40.5) and minutes played (31.2) per game. He also is second on the team with 4.7 rebounds per game. Mosby is eighth in the SWAC in points per game, third in assists per game, fourth in field goal percentage (49.4), 17th in rebounds, sixth in steals per game and third in 3-point percentage. Alcorn State is 8-17 overall and 4-8 in conference play with six games remaining and the team sitting in eighth place. GREG MURPHY — Young Harris College (Jr., F, Woodland HS)… played five minutes and grabbed two rebounds in a 98-77 home win over North Georgia on Feb. 7. He then played seven minutes and went 2-of-4 from the field for four points with two rebounds and a block in a 70-61 loss at UNC Pembroke. YHC (7-16, 6-11 Peach Belt Conference) plays road conference games this week at Francis Marion Monday, Lander Thursday, and Columbus State on Saturday. JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech (Fr., G, Woodland HS)… In one game last week, Pritchett played 19 minutes off the bench, scoring five points with two steals, a rebound and an assist in a 71-68 road loss at Southern Maine Community College. Vermont Tech (16-10, 11-5 Yankee Small College Conference) host College of St. Joseph Tuesday. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanuel College (Sr., F, Excel Christian Acad.)… had a double-double Saturday with 10 rebounds and 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting in 25 minutes in a 64-57 road win over Limestone. He added two blocks and an assist. In 11 games, Robinson is second on the team in points (14), rebounds (7.3) and blocks (1.2) per game while shooting 48 percent from the field in 26.8 minutes per game. The Lions (14-9, 8-5 Conference Carolinas) plays at Mount Olive Wednesday and hosts Southern Wesleyan Saturday. DARIUS THROWER— Truett-McConnell University (Soph., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored three points in each of Truett-McConnell’s two games last week, the first in a 75-72 home win over Allen on Feb. 7, and the second in Saturday’s 91-73 road win over Columbia International. TMU (18-10, 10-8 Appalachian Athletic Conference) travels to Reinhardt Wednesday and entertains Bluefield College (VA) Saturday. COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)…Tobin had a rough shooting night in a loss against Tennessee Wesleyan Feb. 7, scoring just five points, but adding 10 rebounds and two assists. His shooting then bounced back in Saturday’s 92-83 home win over St. Andrews, scoring 18 points. He also threatened a triple double with eight assists and seven rebounds. Reinhardt is fifth in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 10-8 conference record and two games remaining. Tobin is third on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game. He also is putting up 5.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per outing. The Eagles host Truett-McConnell University Wednesday and close out the regular season Saturday at Montreat College (NC). CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (Soph., F, Woodland HS)… North Georgia dropped three games last week by at least 22 points. Watson could do little to help, but did have a strong performance in one of the losses. He scored 10 points in just nine minutes on Feb. 7 against Young Harris, adding a rebound and a block. On Saturday, he scored three points in 12 minutes with three rebounds and an assist, and added a rebound and a block Sunday against UNC Pembroke. UNG (10-14, 8-10 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Clayton State Wednesday and plays at Georgia College Saturday. RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored nine points with three rebounds in a 95-78 home loss to Georgia Southwestern on Feb. 7. He then scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds in just 16 minutes, while putting up 15 field goal attempts, in an 86-76 road loss at Lander on Satuday. For the season, Winters is averaging 12.4 points and 4.7 rebounds in 25.2 minutes per game. Columbus State currently sits tenth in the 12-team Peach Belt Conferce with a 6-11 record, but is just four games back of third place with five games left to play in the regular season. The Cougars play at USC-Aiken Monday night, at Georgia College Wednesday, and host Young Harris College Saturday. WRESTLING EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Sr., Cartersville HS)… won his lone match last week, a 10-2 major decision in the 149-pound weight class over Brewton-Parker’s Benghali Touray on Friday. Cumberland won the dual 28-17 to improve to 3-9 on the year and 1-5 in the Mid-South Conference. Cole is now 5-9 on the year. The Phoenix travel to the Mid-South Conference Championships Saturday in Bowling Green, KY. BASEBALL GRAYSON BAGWELL — LaGrange College (Fr., RHP, Woodland HS)… struck out one and walked one in a one inning relief appearance last Tuesday as the NCAA D3 10th-ranked Panthers blanked visiting Emory, 8-0. LaGrange (5-2) hosts Berry Tuesday before traveling to Jackson, MS to play in the Millsaps College Tournament. Friday through Sunday. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Fr., 1B, Cass HS)… made his first college hit memorable with a solo shot to right field that gave the Mountain Lions a 3-1 lead in the third inning of a 5-4 win last week over visiting Shorter. YHC (2-4) plays at Lee University Tuesday and will host Lander University this weekend in a three-game series to open Peach Belt Conference play. NOAH DANIEL — Reinhardt University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… made a sixth inning, pinch hit appearance Friday but popped out in foul territory in the Eagles’ 8-5 win over visiting Saint Francis (IN). Reinhardt (2-3) hosts Faulkner University (AL) Wednesday and a three-game series with Huntington University (IN) this weekend. BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Sr., OF/P, Cass HS)… the Saints’ every day centerfielder made a one-inning relief appearance Friday at home in an 11-10 loss to Merrimack College. He was also 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the game. In the first game of the doubleheader, Etheridge was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored raising his season batting average to .353 through six games. Limestone (4-2) hosts Mars Hill Tuesday, plays at Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday, and will host the Limestone Classic Friday through Sunday with doubleheaders against Gannon University and LIU Post. LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… started behind the plate Friday in the second game of a doubleheader with West Alabama that was a 4-1 win for the Wolves and completed a three-game series sweep. Griffith walked once and came around to score. He was also hit by a pitch. UWG (7-0) plays at Georgia College Wednesday before hosting a three-game series with Albany State over the weekend. HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… recorded the final two outs on the mound Friday for the Skyhawks in a 4-1 loss to visiting Talladega (AL). Osborn allowed a hit, a pair of inherited runners to score, and hit one batter in his appearance. Point (1-4) hosts a doubleheader with Clark Atlanta University Tuesday and a three-game series with Toccoa Falls College Friday and Saturday. SAM SEAMAN — Gordon State CC (Fr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… started at second base last Monday in a 3-1 loss to visiting LaGrange College JV. He went 0-for-3 at the plate but recorded an assist and a putout in the field in two defensive chances. KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Sr., OF, Cartersville HS)…went 2-for-10 with one RBI on a sacrifice fly as the Eagles defeated West Alabama, but lost to University of North Georgia and Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL. Despite the stretch, Rain is batting .375 as the starting right fielder hitting in the two-hole of the order. ERU (3-2) starts Sunshine State Conference play this Friday and Saturday with a three-game series in St. Petersburg, FL against Eckerd College. TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton-Parker College (Soph., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 2-for-3, scored a run, and drove in one in a 7-6 loss at Truett McConnell University last Tuesday. It was Waits’ first start in two game appearances. The Lady Barons (1-3) travel to Coastal Georgia College Thursday for a doubleheader. GOLF MAGGIE ASHMORE — Augusta University (Sr., Kingston, GA; Heritage Golf Acad.)… shot an opening round 81 Sunday and followed with a 78 Monday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic on the Ocean Course at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, PR. She sits fourth best for the Jaguars who are 8th of 11 teams in the tournament that continues through Tuesday. 4th-ranked Arkansas is the leader through two rounds, five shots ahead of 26th-ranked Iowa State and eight shots ahead of 22nd-ranked Kent State. HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA; Darlington HS)… shot a 1-under-par 71 Saturday to tie for 7th individually in the 37-player Reynolds Lake Oconee Great Waters Individual Collegiate. The Bears play next at the University of Miami Hurricane Invitational March 5-7.
- Canes fall in region finals
The Cartersville boys lost to Sandy Creek Saturday night in the Region 5-AAAA Championship game, 62-51. Jarred Godfrey led Sandy Creek with 24 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. TJ Bickerstaff added 11 points, 18 boards, and three assists for the Patriots. The Canes fell behind 13-0 in the opening quarter, but rallied to take a lead into halftime and led by as many as seven in the third quarter. Jaylon Pugh led Cartersville with 18 points. T.J. Horton scored 14 and Perignon Dyer added 13 points. Cartersville (19-6) will host Heritage-Catoosa (16-12) Saturday in the opening round of the Class AAAA state tournament. The Generals are the third place team from Region 6-AAAA.
- Five wrestlers win state titles
Woodland wrestlers captured three state championships and Cass collected two at the 2018 GHSA Traditional State Wrestling Championships at the Macon Centreplex Thursday through Saturday. Wildcats' 160-pounder Cody Cochran capped off his senior season with a third state title. He had one pin and two technical fall victories prior to his 10-6 win in the finals. Junior Kyle Gollhofer (120-pounds) also won his third state championship pinning three of four opponents. Gollhofer did not lose a match this season. Woodland’s third state winner was freshman Caden McCrary (113-pounds). Cass seniors Tripp Breeden (220-pounds) and Seven Richards (285-pounds) won their second-straight titles. Breeden pinned three of his four opponents. Richards pinned all four of his opponents, three in 50 seconds or less. In the team competition, Cass was fourth and Woodland fifth. Buford won Class AAAAA followed by Union Grove and Ola. Adairsville finished 12th in Class AAA. Cartersville was 29th in Class AAAA. Class AAA was won by Sonoraville who finished just ahead of Bremen and North Hall. The title is a first for Sonoraville. Jefferson won Class AAAA ahead of West Laurens and Troup County. The title is the 18th straight for Jefferson wrestling. Other local state individual placers included Adairsville’s Nic Jackson with a state runner-up finish in the 170-pound division. Angel Banda (106) and Bryce Burgess (182) also placed third in Class AAA for the Tigers. The Cartersville soccer teams swept local rival Woodland Friday at Wildcats Stadium while the Cass teams suffered one-sided losses on the road at Northwest Whitfield. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 4, WOODLAND 3 (Overtime) Cartersville’s Kalyn Donegan scored to difference-maker Friday off an assist from Micah Vance as the visiting Lady Canes’ edged Woodland 4-3. The overtime goal came with 2:19 remaining in the second of two, five-minute overtimes. The two teams tied 3-3 in regulation. Woodland got goals from Kaitlin Winnenberg and Grace Webb to take a 2-1 lead at halftime. Tiera Feanny had the other Woodland goal. Donegan scored twice for Cartersville as did senior Marissa Mowry. Vance finished with a pair of assists and Courtney Rhea added one. Cartersville controlled the ball for most of the game, but Woodland stayed in the game behind Lady Cats’ keeper Esmerelda Hernandez’s 18 saves. Cartersville (1-0) hosts Troup County Tuesday and plays at Chestatee on Friday. Next on the Woodland schedule is a home match with Calhoun on Tuesday, Feb. 20. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 6, WOODLAND 2 Pedro Ghanem’s hat-trick and one assist powered the Hurricanes to a 6-2 road win Friday over Woodland. Brady Craig, James Chege, and Houston Read had the other Cartersville goals. Cartersville evened its season mark at 1-1 following a 5-1 loss at Blessed Trinity last Tuesday. Bartow 8U girls edged Gordon County 14-13 in their opener at the District Warm-Up Tournament in Calhoun. Samantha Gough led all scorers in the game with six points.
