Georgia Highlands softball split a conference doubleheader Monday at East Georgia CC, winning the opener 5-3 but dropping Game 2 in extra innings, 4-3. The Chargers are 22-13 for the year and 10-4 in GCAA play. After one rotation of conference opponents, GHC is in second place. The Chargers are scheduled to play Thomas University JV Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader.

ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… needed just seven pitches to record her first save of the season in Samford's 2-1 win over East Tennessee State University. She entered with the bases loaded and one out. She coaxed a flyball that led to a runner being thrown out at home to secure the win, which evened the Bulldogs' SoCon record at 1-1. Samford (10-24, 1-1) hosts Chattanooga Friday and Saturday in a three-game series. GOLF HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… finished in a tie for 25th at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic over the weekend. She shot six-over par in the 54-hole event with scores of 81, 75 and 78. As a team, Mercer placed fifth of 12 teams. Host LSU won the tournament, followed by Houston, Virginia, and NC State. The Bears have one more tournament before the SoCon Championships. Mercer will host the Brickyard Collegiate on the Brickyard at Riverside Course in Macon April 8-10. The Southern Conference tournament is April 15-17 in Hilton Head, SC. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy)… went 0-2 in singles matches and 2-0 in doubles as Ball State opened MAC play with losses to Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green. In singles action, Gollhofer fell in three sets against Miami, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, and in two sets against Bowling Green, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Paired up with Victoria Sec, Gollhofer helped the Cardinals earn doubles wins by scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Ball State (7-7, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) travels to Ypsilanti, MI Friday for a conference match at Eastern Michigan University. TRACK AND FIELD MILES BEARDEN — Kansas State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA; Darlington HS)… finished eighth in the high jump at the 2018 Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Texas-San Antonio this past weekend. He cleared 1.95 meters to earn a point for the Wildcats, who finished third in the men's standings. K-State competes in the San Francisco State distance Carnival March 30-31 and at the Emporia State Open Saturday, March 31.

Former Cartersville High School baseball players Sam Howard and Connor Justus saw action again this past week with their respective major league teams in Spring training. Meanwhile, the Adairsville High and Young Harris College duo of Tristin Smith and Tyler Washington enjoyed hot offensive weeks with their bats. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies organization (5th-year pro; LHP; Georgia Southern University; Cartersville HS)… was roughed up a bit in a 2.2 inning start Sunday, March 18 and was theh losing pitcher in a 13-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Howard, assigned to start the year with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes was 1-1 in Cactus League action this spring in six appearances. He recorded two holds in relief and had one start. He worked 12.1 innings, walked five and struck out 13 for a 5.11 ERA. Opponents hit .250 against Howard this spring. Albuquerque opens its Pacific Coast League schedule with a five-game series at Salt Lake on Thursday, April 5. CONNOR JUSTUS — Los Angeles Angels organization (3rd-year pro; SS; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… entered to play shortstop in the bottom of the seventh last Thursday but did not have an at-bat in the Angels 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Justus, who played the 2017 season with the Advanced Class A Inland Empire 66ers, will be receiving his 2018 minor league assignment at the end of this week. COLLEGE BASEBALL BRANDON ALLEN — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Woodland HS)… went 2-for-2 with one RBI this past week in a pinch hitting role as the Chargers split four games with Gordon State CC. Allen raised his batting average to .385 with seven RBI in 11 game appearances. He allowed no runs on two hits and two walks, striking out four. He was also inserted in the bottom of the ninth Friday night at 11th-ranked Kentucky in a tie game with runners at first and third and one out. Kentucky’s walk-off run in the 5-4 Auburn loss scored on a wild pitch. He also faced two batters Sunday in the third inning with Auburn trailing 3-0. He allowed a walk, a hit, and a pair of earned runs as the Tigers eventually lost 13-3 in the second game of a doubleheader. Auburn (20-5, 3-2 SEC) faces Alabama Tuesday in Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium for the Capital City Classic. The Tigers then host a three-game series with Missouri Friday through Sunday. He added a double as a pinch hitter Sunday, but the Bears dropped a 14-10 decision to visiting Wofford. Mercer (19-6, 2-1 Southern Conference) travels to Tallahassee to face Florida A&M Tuesday and plays a three-game conference series at East Tennessee State University Thursday through Saturday. HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… suffered his first pitching loss last Tuesday but tossed a complete game five-hitter as the NAIA 25th-ranked Skyhawks were edged by 14th-ranked University of Mobile (AL) 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. Osborne walked one and struck out two in his seven innings of work. Point finished the week 2-3 by winning two of three over Truett-McConnell University over the weekend. The Skyhawks (19-11, 9-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference) play a three-game conference series at Reinhardt Friday and Saturday. HUNTER REAID — Shorter University (Fr., C, Woodland HS)… started at DH and batted second in the lineup last Wednesday in the Hawks’ 7-5 home, non-conference win over Emmanuel College. Shorter (12-16, 4-10) had a 3-1 week that included winning two of three Gulf South Conference games at 2nd-ranked Delta State. The Hawks host Carson-Newman University Tuesday afternoon out of conference and entertain a three-game conference series with Alabama-Huntsville Friday and Saturday. SAM SEAMAN — Gordon State CC (Fr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… had a base hit and scored a run in his only at bat last week. It came in a pinch hitting role last Tuesday during a 10-3 loss at LakePoint to Georgia Highlands CC. The two teams split four conference games during the week. GSCC (19-14, 5-4) plays at ABAC Wednesday and at LakePoint to face Georgia Highlands Friday night. TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (R-Jr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… had his best week of the 2018 season by hitting safely in four straight games — all starts — and going 6-for-12 with 11 RBI on three doubles, three homeruns with four walks and six runs scored. As a result, Smith was named Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week. Smith also stole a base and was hit by a pitch three times during the stretch. He raised his season batting average over 100 points to .294 as the Mountain Lions won at Truett-McConnell and swept a three-game conference series at home with 11th-ranked Flagler College. YHC (16-13, 10-8 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Emmanuel College Tuesday before traveling to Americus for a three-game conference series at Georgia Southwestern Friday and Saturday. TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… extended his hitting streak to seven straight games by going 6-for-17 in four games last week. He hit a solo homerun at Truett-McConnell and had one other RBI in the series opener with Flagler College. Washington walked twice and scored four runs last week as the Mountain Lions won four straight. YHC (16-13, 10-8 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Emmanuel College Tuesday before traveling to Americus for a three-game conference series at Georgia Southwestern Friday and Saturday.

The Georgia Highlands baseball team split a doubleheader at Gordon State CC Saturday to earn a four-game series split with the Highlanders. Gordon State won the opener 8-3, but the Chargers held off a late surge by their hosts in the second game to win 11-9 in Barnesville. Georgia Highlands took the series opening game Tuesday night at LakePoint, but lost Thursday in Barnesville, 9-4. In Game 1 Saturday, Gordon State took a 6-0 lead with a five-run fourth inning and limited the Chargers to only a three-run sixth. Adam Leverett (7 IP, 3ER, 6H, 0BB, 4K) tossed a complete game for the pitching win. Drew Wilson (3.1 IP, 6R, 4ER, 6H, 0BB, 2K) was saddled with the loss for the Chargers. Brian Davis led the Gordon bats with two hits that included a double and two RBI. Six other Highlanders had one hit each. Willis Kemp had two hits including a double for Georgia Highlands. Nick Piccapietra drove in two runs with a double. In Game 2 Saturday, the Chargers posted seven runs through the first four innings, but a four-run third and a single run in the fourth kept Gordon State within striking distance at 7-5. Georgia Highlands added four more runs in the top of the sixth and then held off the Highlanders in the bottom of the seventh despite allowing four runs for an 11-9 win. GHC starting pitcher Tyler Sellers (5 IP, 5ER, 7H, 2BB, 5K) picked up the win. Noah Bryant (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K), Sam Warren (0.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB), and Matt Norton (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 0K) also took the bump for the Chargers with Norton earning a save. The Georgia Highlands offense produced 14 hits, including five extra-base hits. Parker Orr went 4-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Zach Miller doubled twice in a 3-for-4 performance that included three RBI. Austin Foster contributed a pair of base hits. Following the four-game series split, Gordon State is 19-14 overall and 5-4 in GCAA conference play. Georgia Highlands (22-10, 8-5) hosts Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Monday at 5 p.m. at LakePoint and travels to West Georgia Tech on Wednesday before hosting Gordon State again on Friday.

Eight Cartersville pitchers logged one inning each and the Hurricanes utilized all 25 players in a 6-0 shutout of Pepperell Saturday at the Rome Braves’ State Mutual Stadium in Rome. Pepperell managed only five hits in the game and Canes’ pitchers issued only one walk while fanning five. Cohen Wilbanks, Gage Morris, Kolby Adams, Luke Schiltz, Reece Thompson, Levi Ayers, and Curtis Wilkes each tossed one inning apiece for Cartersville. On offense, Cartersville took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and added to their lead in each of the next three frames. Anthony Seigler drove in two runs on two hits including a double. John Reed Evans had two RBI with one hit. Mason Barnett drove home a run with one hit. Preston Welchel doubled, Devin Warner tripled, and Garrett Shelton and Ian Inaba had the other Canes’ hits. Jake Gooch drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The loss drops Pepperell’s season mark to 7-9. Cartersville (15-5, 4-0) travels to Cedartown Monday at 5:30 p.m. and hosts Central-Carroll and Sandy Creek Tuesday and Friday.

The Adairsville High School girls and boys tennis teams split non-region matches Friday with visiting Gordon Central. The Tigers won 3-2, but the Lady Tigers dropped a 3-2 decision. The Cass girls and boys soccer teams both picked up important Region 7-AAAAA victories Friday night over Villa Rica moving both teams closer to potential state playoff berths. CASS GIRLS 4, VILLA RICA 1 The Cass girls soccer team moved a step closer to securing a Class 5A state playoff berth Friday night with a 4-1 Region 7-AAAAA win at home over Villa Rica. Villa Rica carried a 1-0 lead to the locker room at halftime Friday night, but the Cass girls got four goals from Logan Vermaas in the second half for their victory. The first goal for Vermaas tied the game about one minute into the second half off a feed from Briana Ochoa. Ochoa would assist on two more goals and the final assist was from Jaden Musacchio. Cass (6-7, 4-2) has now won four straight and has two region games remaining at home next week against Hiram Wednesday and Kell Friday. CASS BOYS 4, VILLA RICA 3 Cass and Villa Rica played regulation and overtime Friday night in a game that was ultimately decided by penalty kicks. The two teams matched first half goals for a 2-2 tie at the intermission, then each scored a second half goal to send the game into overtime tied 3-3. Neither team scored in the two, five-minute overtime periods sending the game to a shootout finale’. Anthony Robledo, Julio Medina, Jonathan Tong, and Josh Flores all converted their penalty kicks to secure the Colonels’ 4-3 win. Villa Rica scored two goals early in the first half before Cass tied the game at the intermission on goals by Carlos Perez and Slomi Orozco. Medina assisted on both plays. The Colonels took a second half lead, 3-2, on a Felipe Albarran goal off an assist from Robledo but Villa Rica tied the game with about 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Cass keeper Isai Romero had nine saves in regulation plus the big stop in the shootout. Villa Rica is now 7-5-1 overall and 3-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (5-7, 4-2) has won four straight and is currently third in the region playoff chase with home games remaining against Hiram Wednesday and Kell on Friday.

Three of the four local baseball teams in action Friday night picked up region victories as Cartersville blanked Troup, Woodland doubled-up East Paulding, and Adairsville won a high-scoring affair at Murray County. Cass was the lone local team to lose Friday, dropping a 10-4 home decision to Villa Rica. CARTERSVILLE 5, TROUP COUNTY 0 Anthony Seigler hit two homeruns, the Canes produced six extra base hits, and pitchers Mason Barnett and Seigler shutout third-ranked Troup Friday night as Cartersville won on the road, 5-0. The win was the fourth-straight — all region games — for the second-ranked Hurricanes. Seigler homered in the first and fourth innings to provide three of the Canes’ first four runs while Barnett limited the Tigers to only four hits, no walks, and he fanned nine in six innings. Seigler did not allow a hit in the seventh inning. He walked one and struck out one to close out the game. In addition to Seigler’s productive night, Jordan Wilkie had two hits including a double. Preston Welchel had one RBI with a double and a sacrifice and Josh Davis had a double. The loss drops Troup to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (14-5, 4-0) meets Pepperell Saturday at 1 p.m. at State Mutual Stadium in Rome. WOODLAND 8, EAST PAULDING 4 The Wildcats snapped a brief, two-game skid Friday night with an 8-4 Region 7-AAAAA victory at East Paulding. The Woodland win also split the two-game season series with the Raiders who won at Woodland Wednesday evening. Woodland trailed 2-1 heading to the fourth inning, but posted seven runs over the next three frames on their way to an 8-2 lead. East Paulding scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but came up four runs short. B Evans gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly. Woodland then took advantage of two singles and a pair of errors to take a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Woodland’s four-run fifth included hits by Toby Queen (bunt) and Bailey Ward plus a two-run double by Dylan Forman and a sacrifice fly from Koby Stansel. East Paulding also committed two more errors in the frame to extend the inning. The Wildcats’ run in the sixth scored without benefit of a hit. Two errors, a walk, and a fielder’s choice plated the run. In all, East Paulding committed eight errors in the contest. Kenny Jinks picked up the pitching win for Woodland. He tossed a complete game scattering seven hits and a walk while allowing four earned runs. Jinks struck out four. East Paulding falls to 4-12 overall and 1-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (9-9, 2-2) has a two-game home-and-home region series with Rome on Monday and Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. starts and Monday’s game is at Rome. ADAIRSVILLE 15, MURRAY COUNTY 12 At one point Friday night, Adairsville trailed Murray County 9-0 but came storming back for a 15-12 Region 6-AAA win. Levi Blackwell (4 IP, 4ER, 6H, 2BB, 3K) earned the pitching victory for Adairsville with four quality innings of relief. Elijah Padgett (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) earned a save by closing down the Indians in the seventh. Garrett Mishoe led the Tigers’ offense with a 3-for-4 performance, including a pair of doubles and three RBI. Corey Nation (RBI), Noah Dutton, Kyler Pelfrey (double, 2 RBI), and Caden Gibbs (RBI) all finished with two hits each. B.J. Roper, Trace Still (RBI), and Hunter Hice had the other Tigers’ hits. Murray County falls to 3-15 overall and 0-7 in region action. Adairsville (12-5, 5-2) play three of the region’s top teams next week. They host 10th-ranked Bremen Tuesday and Calhoun Thursday before traveling to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Friday. VILLA RICA 10, CASS 4 Villa Rica took an early 6-0 lead and held off Cass for a 10-4 Region 7-AAAAA win Friday at the Cass Athletic Complex. A single and two doubles gave the visiting Wildcats a 2-0 lead in the second inning. They added four more runs in the third inning on three singles, an error, and a batter that reached on a dropped third strike. Those runs would be enough for Villa Rica pitcher Jessie Martinez (7 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) who eased to the complete-game victory. The two teams traded runs over the final two innings and that was good enough for Villa Rica’s win. The Wildcats scored off a single, a walk, a groundout, and a wild pitch in the sixth. Villa Rica then added three runs in the top of the seventh with two singles, an error, two walks, and a hit batsmen for a 10-1 lead. Clay Means drove in the Colonels’ first run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. They added three runs in the seventh off only one hit. A hit batsman, a walk, a single, an error, and a fielder’s choice plated the final Cass runs. Martinez, Tristen Allen, Noah Best, and Tanner Marshall combined for seven Villa Rica hits and five RBI. Matt Shook finished with two hits for the Cass offense. Means and Logan Nelson had the only other Colonels’ hits. Villa Rica improved to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in region play. Cass (9-9, 3-3) hosts region-leading Carrollton Monday at 5:55 p.m. and travels to Carrollton Wednesday.

Five local high school soccer teams picked up victories on the soccer pitch Thursday evening. The only local loss was in a shootout. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 5, LFO 2 Emily Collum scored a hat trick and Gillian Johnson and Hannah Worley added one goal each as the Adairsville girls soccer team won at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Thursday evening. Lady Tigers’ keeper Havyn Isaac also contributed one of her top performances with multiple saves including a key stop on a breakaway with the game scoreless at the time. Johnson assisted on two of Collum’s goals and Collum hooked up with Johnson for her tally. Emily Emmons also assisted on a Collum goal. The Lady Tigers led 3-1 at halftime and pushed their lead to 5-1 in the second half before the host Lady Warriors added a late goal. With important region games ahead on the schedule against Sonoraville (next Thursday) and Calhoun, Adairsville is tied for second in Region 6-AAA with a 3-1 mark. The Lady Tigers are now 6-1-2 overall. Adairsville plays at Central-Carroll Tuesday in a non-region contest. WOODLAND GIRLS 2, EAST PAULDING 1 The Woodland girls soccer team defeated East Paulding Thursday in Dallas, 2-1. Kaitlin Winnenberg opened the Lady Cats’ scoring with a goal off a Grace Webb corner kick midway through the first half. After the Lady Raiders tied the game in the second half, but Webb scored Woodland’s winning goal with four minutes remaining. Woodland is now 6-7-1 overall and 3-5 in Region 7-AAAAA. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, HERITAGE-CATOOSA 1 In a non-region match Thursday evening, Marissa Mowry scored both Lady Canes’ goals in a 2-1 victory. The game-winner by Mowry broke a 1-1 tie with about 15 minutes remaining in the game and the Cartersville defenders were able to twart the frenzied comeback efforts of the visiting Lady Generals. The Lady Canes (6-4, 3-1) host a non-region match with Southeast Whitfield Monday. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 9, HERITAGE-CATOOSA 0 Canes’ leading scorer Pedro Ghanem scored three goals in the first half and finished with four goals in the game as Cartersville blanked visiting Heritage 9-0 Thursday night. Grant Farmer scored twice for the Canes. Joel Zazueta, Carter Spivey, and Ricardo Torres each added one goal each. The visiting Generals dropped to 2-11 on the season. Cartersville (8-3, 4-0) returns to region action next Thursday, March 29 when the Canes travel to Cedartown. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 3, LFO 1 Following a scoreless first half, the Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the second half and went on to a 3-1 victory Thursday night at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Miguel Garcia, Emmanuel Lopez, and Gabriel Sanchez scored the Adairsville goals. Dani Carrillo finished the night with two assists and Sanchez also added an assist. Keeper Nic Jackson picked up the win in net. He totaled nine saves. Adairsville (3-2, 3-1 Region 6-AAA) hosts a non-region match with Fannin County Friday evening. EAST PAULDING BOYS 2, WOODLAND 1 (4-3 in shootout) Woodland and East Paulding battled to a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime Thursday night in Dallas with the host Raiders eventually prevailing in a shootout, 4-3, for a Region 7-AAAAA victory. Woodland led 1-0 at the intermission and East Paulding’s goal came in the second half. The two teams did not score in overtime sending the region game to a shootout. East Paulding improved to 4-9-1 overall and 3-3 in region action. Woodland (5-6-1, 2-3) plays at Heritage-Catoosa April 10.
