The Cartersville girls and boys tennis teams both completed their region regular seasons unbeaten and secured No. 1 seeds for the region tournament by blanking Chapel Hill Thursday at Dellinger Park. All four local teams were in action Thursday night with Cass topping Woodland to even their season series. Adairsville won an important region game with Sonoraville and Cartersville made short work of visiting LaGrange. The Cass baseball team earned a season split with visiting Woodland Thursday evening with an 11-5 Region 7-AAAAA victory. Woodland won the first meeting between the two county rivals last Friday at Woodland, 15-2. Thursday, it appeared early that Woodland would take control. The Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead, but the Colonels scored four times in the bottom of the third to take a lead they would not relinquish. Cass added single runs in teh four and fifth innings, then added five more in the sixth for an 11-3 lead. Woodland scored two runs in the top of the seventh and out hit Cass 12 to 11, but the Colonels held on for the victory. The Wildcats did not help themselves defensively. Only two of the 11 Cass runs were earned with Woodland committing five errors in the game. Cass also committed three errors in the contest. Cass pitcher Wyatt Karlovich (5.2 IP, 3ER, 9H, 1BB, 3K) earned the win with Logan Nelson (1.1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1BB) retiring the final four outs. Koby Stansel (5 IP, 9R, 2ER, 9H, 1BB, 3K) was the losing pitcher for Woodland. Tyler Dilcher (1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched. Ben Ammons finished with three hits and two RBI for Woodland. Bryce Evans (2 RBI), Marco Haro (RBI), and Stansel added two hits each. Chris Mills, Titus Jones, and Dylan Webb had one hit apiece for the Wildcats. Evan Hinton doubled twice and had three RBI. Cass (9-8, 3-2) hosts Villa Rica Friday at 5:55 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE 3, SONORAVILLE 2 The Adairsville Tigers got solid pitching and just enough offensive production Thursday night as they earned an important Region 6-AAA victory over Sonoraville, 3-2. Kyler Pelfrey (5 IP, 1ER, 3H, 5BB, 5K) started on the mound and was credited with the pitching victory for Adairsville. Caden Gibbs (2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) earned a save. The Tigers scored a single run in the first inning and two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead, then held off the visiting Phoenix over the final four frames. Sonoraville scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings for the 3-2 final score. Pelfrey doubled, advanced to third on an infield error, and scored on a passed ball for the Tigers’ first inning run. They added two more in the third utilizing singles by Corey Nation, Noah Dutton, and Gibbs. Pelfrey also contributed in the inning with a groundout that produced a run. Sonoraville falls to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in Region 6-AAA play. Adairsville (10-5, 3-2) travels to Murray County Friday at 5:55 p.m. CARTERSVILLE 14, LaGRANGE 4 (5 inn.) The Cartersville baseball team scored runs in every inning Thursday evening as they defeated visiting LaGrange 14-4 in five innings. The one-side final started as a back-and-forth struggle. LaGrange put up all four of their runs in the first three innings and held brief leads of 1-0, 3-2, and 4-3 in the early frames. The Hurricanes, however, answered every time as they out hit the Grangers 16 to six. Gage Morris (2.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win for the Canes in relief of starter Levi Ayers (2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 0BB, 2K). Jake Gooch (0.2 IP, 1BB) closed out the final two outs. Ben Stogner was tagged with the pitching loss for the Grangers in relief of starter Brant Williams. LaGrange used five total pitchers in the contest. On offense, Mason Barnett tripled, homered and walked for three RBI. Josh Davis, Devin Warner (double, 2 RBI), and Ian Inaba (3 RBI) had three hits each. Jake Gooch had two hits while J.P. Martin and Preston Welchel added one hit and two RBI. Anthony Seigler also had a hit. Logan Karcher was the only Granger with two hits. With the loss, LaGrange falls to 4-16 overall and 2-2 in region play. Cartersville (13-5, 3-0) plays at Troup County Friday at 5:55 p.m. and will take on Pepperell Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Rome Braves’ State Mutual Stadium.

Gordon State erupted for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open a tie game and defeat the visiting Georgia Highlands Chargers Thursday afternoon in Barnesville, 9-4. Georgia Highlands scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead, but the host Highlanders matched those runs in the bottom of the third. GHC again took the lead with a run in the fourth before Gordon State tied the game 3-3 in the sixth inning. The Highlanders’ six run damage in the eighth started with Dane Bullock’s second home run of the day. The eighth inning two-run homer gave Gordon a 5-3 lead. He also hit a solo shot in the sixth inning to knot the score at the time. Two hit batsmen, a pair of singles, and a double added four more runs in the decisive inning for the Highlanders as they evened the four-game series at one game each. Jonathan Robinson picked up the pitching win for Gordon State by working the final two frames in relief of starter Cory Bartholomew. GHC’s Cody Johnson (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB, 2K) was assigned the loss in relief of starter Matt Norton (2.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 4BB, 1K) and Travis Kuebler (3.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 4K). Brady Barker (0.0 IP, 3ER, 1H) and Kevin Barham (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2K) also pitched for the Chargers. In addition to Bullock’s four-RBI day for Gordon State, Datren Bray and Brian Moore both contributed a pair of hits and one RBI each. Georgia Highlands out hit Gordon State 12 to 8, but lacked the timely hits to drive in runs. Austin Foster went 3-for-4 for the Chargers and Willis Kemp finished the day 2-for-5. Parker Orr drove in two runs and had one hit. Skylar McPhee (double), Cameron Hearn (RBI), Brandon Allen, Spencer Lewis, Bryson Horne (RBI), and Zach Miller added one hit apiece. Georgia Highlands (21-9, 7-4 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) will return to Barnesville Saturday for a doubleheader to wrap up the week’s four-game conference series. Gordon State improved to 18-13 overall and 4-3 with Thursday’s win.

The Cass tennis teams were both 3-2 winners over Hiram Wednesday at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Lady Colonels picked up victories at Line 1 singles and in both doubles matches while the boys won on singles lines 2 and 3 and secured the team victory with a win at Line 1 doubles. Emily Surcey won 6-1, 6-0 for the Lady Colonels, while the doubles pairings of McKenley King and Emma Wickenheiser and Alexis Pritchett and Grace Njorge earned solid wins by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 scores. The Colonels took two of three singles matches with Reagan Barrere earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory at Line 2 and Max McCauley survived a 6-2, 6-8, 6-1 battle to win at Line 3. The Cass Line 1 doubles pairing of brothers Kendall and Noah Arnold won 6-2, 6-3 for the Colonels third team point and the victory.

Haralson County pitcher Landon Malone tossed a five-hit shutout at visiting Adairsville Wednesday evening to lead the Rebels past the Tigers 6-0 in a Region 6-AAA game. Malone struck out seven and walked only two in seven innings. The host Rebels scored single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings for a 3-0 lead. Haralson then doubled their advantage with a three-run sixth. Haralson managed only three hits in the game, but also took advantage of nine walks and four Adairsville errors. The Tigers had five hits including two by Caden Gibbs. Garrett Mishoe, Halen Huskins, and Noah Dutton had the other Adairsville base hits. Mishoe (5 IP, 3R, 1ER, 1H, 6BB, 8K) went five innings and received the pitching loss. Levi Blackwell (0.1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K and Landon Ayers (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) pitched in the sixth. Haralson County improved to 8-6 overall and 3-1 in region action. Adairsville (9-5, 2-2) hosts Sonoraville Thursday.

Cass baseball broke open a close game with a five-run fifth inning Wednesday evening at Villa Rica to defeat the Wildcats 8-2 in Region 7-AAAAA action. Cass led 3-1 through four innings before the fifth inning scoring eruption. Cass took advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen to set up a two-run single by Evan Hinton that extended the Colonels’ lead to 5-1. Two wild pitches and another walk preceded an RBI single by Thomas Botts and the Cass lead was 8-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth. Blaine Ingram drove in a third inning run with a double to give Cass a 1-0 lead. Nathan Smith put Cass up 3-0 with a two-run double in the fourth. Two walks and a single by Bryson Smith gave the Wildcats their first run in the fourth inning.They added a seventh inning run when Trevor Murphy doubled. Murphey and Johnny Bravy led the Villa Rica offense with two hits each. Noah Best (4.1 IP, 7R, 6ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Bravy and Murphy pitched in relief for Villa Rica. Evan Hinton (6 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 8K) earned the pitching win for the Colonels. Nic Walllin (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K) closed out the final frame. Hinton and Smith (double, RBI) led Cass with two hits apiece. Smith (double, 2 RBI), Steven Spell and Ingram (double, RBI) contributed one hit each for the Colonels. Following the loss, Villa Rica is 8-10 overall and 1-4 in region play. Cass (8-8, 2-2) evened its overall and region marks with the road win. The Colonels host county rival Woodland Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and Villa Rica Friday at 5:55 p.m. EAST PAULDING 11, WOODLAND 1 East Paulding pitcher Jacob Cook tossed a complete game, scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts as the visiting Raiders defeated Woodland 11-1 in six innings Wednesday night. Cook blanked the Wildcats through the first four innings before allowing the lone Woodland run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Dylan Webb. The Raiders’ senior was also a major contributor at the plate where he went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Andrew Pendleton had two hits and four RBI. Seth Grenon drove in a run with two hits. Jackson Phipps finished with two hits including a double while Brandon Haston doubled twice for East Paulding. Woodland pitcher Ben Ammons (4 IP, 7R, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) suffered the loss on the mound. Seth McGill (2 IP, 4ER, 5H) pitched the fifth and sixth innings for the Wildcats. Five different Wildcats had one hit each including Garrett Cornett, Koby Stansel, Chris Mills, Marco Haro, and Dylan Webb. East Paulding improved to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA with the victory. Woodland (8-8, 1-1) plays region games at Cass Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and at East Paulding Friday at 5:55 p.m.

The Cartersville boys soccer team blanked Chapel Hill 5-0 in a Region 5-AAAA Tuesday at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. The Hurricanes led 1-0 at halftime on a header goal by Pedro Ghanem off a corner kick. Ghanem scored goals twice in the second half to complete his hat trick. Houston Read and Javi Morillon also added Canes’ goals. The final Cartersville tally was on an own goal. Cartersville (7-3, 4-0) hosts Heritage-Catoosa Thursday evening. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 5, CHAPEL HILL 3 The Lady Canes reeled off five straight goals Tuesday night in a come-from-behind 5-3 Region 5-AAAA win over Chapel Hill at the Cartersville Soccer Complex. Cartersville’s Courtney Rhea scored in the first half to cut Chapel Hill’s lead to 2-1 at the intermission. Marissa Mowry tied the game at 2-2 with an early second half goal abd Rhea gave Cartersville a 3-2 lead. The Lady Canes then took a 5-2 advantage on penaty kick goals by Kalyn Donegan and Mowry. Chapel Hill (6-5, 3-1) added a final goal, but the Hurricanes held on for the win. Cartersville (5-5, 3-1) hosts Heritage-Catoosa Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Alex Holdbrooks tossed eight strong innings and the Chargers’ offense produced double-digit runs as Georgia Highlands College defeated the visiting Gordon State Highlanders Tuesday night at LakePoint, 10-3. Holdbooks scattered four hits and two walks and was responsible for only one earned run. He fanned eight in earning the pitching victory. The Chargers scored seven runs in the first four innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. After Gordon State made the score 7-1 in the fifth, GHC added three more runs in th eighth for a 10-1 advantage. The visiting Highlanders scored twice in the ninth but Chargers’ pitcher Jeremiah Woods (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2K) retired the final three outs to complete the 10-3 win. Zach MIller hit a first inning solo homerun and added a double for his two hits. Parker Orr blasted a two-run homer in the third inning that gave the Chargers a 5-0 lead. Willis Kemp had three hits and one RBI. Bryson Horne drove in two runs with a pair of hits that included a double. Nick Piccapietra contributed two hits including a double and one RBI. Austin Foster (RBI) and Skylar McPhee had one hit each. Seven Gordon State batters had one hit each. Former Adairsville standout Sam Seaman had one of those hits in a ninth inning pinch hit role. GHC (21-8, 7-3) and Gordon State (17-13, 3-3) continue their four-game conference series Thursday and Saturday in Barnesville. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday.
