The Adairsville Tigers scored at least one run in each of the first four innings Thursday night at North Murray, then held on for a 5-4 Region 6-AAA win over the host Mountaineers in Chatsworth. Starter Caden Gibbs (5 IP, 4R, 2ER, 8H, 2BB, 4K) picked up the pitching victory for the Tigers. Chase Horn (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K) delivered a save by retiring the final six outs. Adairsville trailed 2-1 after one inning, but scored twice in the second inning and added single runs in the next two frames to lead 5-2 after four innings. North Murray threatened with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Horn was able to squelch the Mountaineers at the end. Four different Tigers had two hits in the victory. Kyler Pelfrey (triple), Noah Dutton (RBI), Halen Huskins, and Gibbs (double) finished with two hits each. Corey Nation added a hit with a stolen base and Trace Still hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. North Murray falls to 3-9 overall and 0-2 in Region 6-AAA. Four local high school girls basketball players participated Thursday night in the Northwest Georgia Senior All-Star Game played at the Floyd Campus of Georgia Highlands College. Cass seniors Kyla Michienzi and Chanel Clemmons played on the South team, while Woodland senior Whitney Harris and Adairsville senior Josie Summerville participated on the North squad. The South team won the game, 78-64. Michienzi finished with five points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. Clemmons contributed four points, five boards, and four blocks. Three Cartersville pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout and the offense exploded for double-digit runs Thursday in Tyrone as the Hurricanes blanked Sandy Creek in five innings, 16-0. Jake Gooch hit a second inning grand slam and Anthony Seigler hit a leadoff solo home run to start the third inning as the Canes’ bats exhibited some power. Four other Hurricanes had extra base hits. Josh Davis contributed two hits including a double and three RBI. Mason Barnett had a double and one RBI in his two hits. Jordan Wilkie finished with two hits including a double and two RBI and Brant Smith doubled home one run. Chadler Tromza, Garrett Shelton, Preston Welchel, and Kolby Adams (RBI) had the other Cartersville base hits. Ian Inaba added one RBI with a sacrifice fly. Barnett (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 5K) picked up the pitching victory in an abbreviated outing. Adams (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) and Luke Schiltz (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) worked an inning each. Defensive miscues and walks are always difficult to overcome, but they were devastating for the Cass Colonels in a 14-4 Region 7-AAAAA loss at Hiram Wednesday night. After Cass broke on top 3-0, Hiram took advantage of two Cass errors in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead. In the second inning, two more errors and four walks contributed to Hiram’s four run frame that gave the Hornets an early 8-4 lead. The score remained the same until the bottom of sixth when Hiram mixed in five singles with two more walks and another error for a six-run burst that gave the Hornets a 10-run lead and ended the game early. In all, the Colonels committed six defensive miscues and Cass pitchers issued nine walks. Parker Hardin (0.1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 0H, 3BB) was tagged with the pitching loss for Cass in relief of starter Blaine Ingram (1 IP, 4R, 0ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K). Nic Wallin (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K), Wyatt Karlovich (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 3K), and Gavin Young (0.2 IP, 6R, 3ER, 5H, 2BB) also took the mound. Steven Spell (RBI), Nathan Smith, Karlovich (RBI), Evan Hinton, and Ingram (RBI) had one hit each for Cass. The win by Hiram (4-8, 1-1) earns a two-game region series split with the Colonels. After visiting Georgia Highlands caught West Georgia Tech in the top of the fifth 5-5, the host Golden Knights pulled away from the Chargers over the next three frames for a 16-6 conference victory in seven innings. West Georgia Tech held a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Georgia Highlands scored five runs across the fourth and fifth innings to knot the game. West Georgia Tech responded with six runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and four more in the seventh to end the game early, 16-6. Jacob Warren hit a home run and had four doubles for the Golden Knights in a 5-for-5 day that included eight RBI. Three more WGTCC hitters finished with two hits each — Brock Maxwell, Tony Matos, and Jacob Early. Parker Orr hit a three-run homer for Georgia Highlands in the fourth to narrow the West Georgia Tech lead to 4-3. Zach Miller also homered for the Chargers. Woodland dropped a 7-4 decision Tuesday night to visiting Pickens in the Wildcats’ final non-region game. The Dragons led 2-1 after two innings and held a 3-2 advantage going into the fourth inning where Pickens scored three more times to take a 6-2 lead. Pickens added an insurance run in the sixth inning and Woodland responded with two, but it was not enough. Eight of nine starters had at least one hit for the Dragons who were led by Jace Franklin’s three-hit performance. Joseph Gossett added two hits, including a homer. Caswell Smith (5 IP, 4R, 2ER, 7H, 4BB, 3K) picked up the pitching win for Pickens as the Dragons improved to 8-4. Koby Stansel (6 IP, 7ER, 12H, 1BB, 5K) suffered the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Jordan Lee (double), Toby Queen, and Stansel (RBI) had two hits each for Woodland. Dylan Webb added a double with one RBI. Woodland (7-7) hosts Cass Friday in the Wildcats Region 7-AAAAA opener at 5:55 p.m.

Noah Dutton delivered an eighth inning, one-out single back through the middle to drive home B.J. Roper with a game-winning walkoff run Tuesday night as the Adairsville Tigers edged visiting Coahulla Creek, 2-1. The clutch hit came in support of an outstanding pitching performance by Kyler Pelfrey and Chase Horn. Designated hitter, Trace Still, doubled home Hunter Hice for the Tigers’ only other run of the game in the fourth inning. At the time, it gave Adairsville a 1-0 lead. The Colts tied the game in the top of the seventh on a one-out walk, a groundout, and a two-out RBI single by Donavon Sims. Horn (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) picked up the pitching victory by working a scoreless eighth inning in relief of a dazzling start by Pelfrey (7 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 11K). Eli Turso (7.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 6H, 1BB, 9K) was the tough-luck, complete-game loser on the mound for Coahulla Creek (4-8, 0-2). Corey Nation had two of Adairsville’s six hits. The Cass baseball team fell behind 3-0 in the top of the third inning Monday evening at LakePoint in Emerson but the Colonels responded with nine unanswered runs for a 9-3 Region 7-AAAAA win over Hiram. Evan Hinton (6.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 11H, 0BB, 5K) earned the pitching win for Cass by working into the seventh inning. Wyatt Karlovich closed out the final inning by striking out the only batter he faced. Cass scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to knot the game 3-3. Gavin Young walked and Matt Shook, Bryson Markley, Steven Spell, and Clay Means singled in the inning. The Colonels took a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth with four more runs. Hinton led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Young. Shook and Markley walked in front of a two RBI single by Nathan Smith. After Means walked to load the bases, Logan Nelson walked to drive home Markley for a four-run Cass lead. The Colonels added their final two runs in the sixth on a Spell walk, a Means triple, and an RBI single by Hinton. Means finished with a pair of hits and three RBI. The Woodland girls and boys tennis teams made it a clean sweep Monday afternoon with identical 5-0 wins over Villa Rica in Region 7-AAAAA action. The Woodland girls dropped only one set while improving to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in region. The Woodland boys won all ten sets on the day and improved to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in region play — their best region start in school history.
