Cartersville 12U blanked Gordon County on the road and Bartow County 12U topped Calhoun at Hamilton Crossing Park. Cartersville 10U and 8U also picked up their initial wins of District 5 play and Bartow County's 10U team won an overtime thriller. 12U CARTERSVILLE 46, GORDON COUNTY 0 The Cartersville Parks and Recreation 12U all-stars won their opening District 5 game Thursday night at the Sonoraville Recreation Department Field by blanking Gordon County, 46-0. Five different Cartersville players scored touchdowns and the defense forced five turnovers in a one-sided victory. Trevor Harris scored a rushing touchdown and returned one of his three interceptions for a score to help lead Cartersville. Brelace Williams (1-yd. run), Kristian Lando (42-yd. run), McKaiden Reece (3 yd. run), and Christian Wood (4-yd. run) each added rushing touchdowns. Reece recorded nine tackles, including two for loss. K.J. Johnson had a pair of tackles and forced a fumble. Devan Curtis converted four of five PATs. Cartersville 12U plays Calhoun Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Calhoun Recreation Department field. 12U BARTOW COUNTY 28, CALHOUN 8 The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department 12U all-stars returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns and Malachi Jeffries ran for two more scores in a 28-8 defeat of Calhoun Thursday night at Hamilton Crossing Park. Bartow’s Devin Henderson returned the game’s opening kickoff 67 yards for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead after a failed extra point, but Calhoun answered on their first possession with a drive to take an 8-6 lead. Caleb Cooley returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for a Bartow County touchdown. After the 2-point PAT kick Bartow led 14-8 and took that lead into the intermission. Bartow padded their lead in the second half with a 50-yard touchdown jaunt by Jeffries in the third quarter and a 10-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Bartow's next game is Tuesday at the Sonoraville Recreation Department Field where they will play Gordon County. 10U BARTOW COUNTY 20, CALHOUN 14 (overtime) Isaiah LIvsey had a 47-yard touchdown run in regulation and a 12-yard scoring run in overtime as the 10U Bartow County all-stars outlasted Calhoun Thursday night at the Calhoun Recreation Department Field. The Bartow defense also had a goal line stand stopping Calhoun on a fourth and goal at the one yard line. Ja'kai Baldwin had the other Bartow County touchdown on a 47-yard scamper. Bartow County's next game is Tuesday night at Hamilton Crossing Park against Gordon County. 10U CARTERSVILLE 44, GORDON COUNTY 0 JaCaiden Leonard and Baylon Long each scored a pair of rushing touchdowns to help lead 10U Cartersville to a 44-0 shutout of Gordon County Thursday night at Dellinger Park. Leonard had scoring runs of 53 and 27 yards. Long's runs were 26 yards and one yard. Jakeveon Porter added a 20-yard touchdown run and Brodie McWhorter connected with Jabari Davis on a 50-yard touchdown pass in the victory. Hurricanes’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence received his honorary U.S. Army All-American Bowl jersey Tuesday at Cartersville High School as part of the Army All-American Bowl Selection Tour presented by American Family Insurance. Lawrence, who plans to graduate early, is the top pro-style paser in the Class of 2018 and will enroll in January at Clemson. He will be among the top players in the country in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The game kicks off Saturday, January 6 in San Antonio, TX and will be aired live at 1 p.m. on NBC. Competitive cheerleading in Bartow County has a strong tradition of success and all four local schools proved that true once again with each squad advancing to this weekend’s state competitions at the Columbus Civic Center Adairsville won Region 6AAA for the first time ever and has automatically qualified for the state championship competition on Saturday. The Tigers, coached by Kaylie Noe, are led by seniors Addison Mealer, Katie Mulkey, Emily Abernathy, Brissa Perez, and captain Brooke Bishop. Cass advanced to the state sectionals by placing third in Region 7AAAAA. Coach Brooke McDurmon’s squad overcame multiple injuries during the season, but the Colonels were led by Ashlie Swanson and Zoe Bryson with flier Yahaira Hernandez stepping up late in the season to round out the squad. Woodland, competiting in the co-ed division, is the defending state champions and placed fifth last weekend to advance to the state championship round. Coach Kathi Shedd points to leadership from captains Andy Johnson and Chloe Hendricks along with seniors Kaitlyn Honaker and Ryanne Ritch on an otherwise youthful squad. Cartersville qualified for the Class AAAA sectionals with a fourth place finish at the Region 5AAAA meet. The Hurricanes finished behind Cedartown, Chapel Hill, and Troup County at region. Sectionals are Friday in Columbus. The state championship round for the top 16 teams in each division will be Saturday.

Adairsville's NFL star Vic Beasley had an active day that included five tackles with a sack in the Atlanta Falcons' three-point loss Sunday at Carolina and local college football players contributed from a variety of positions in games across the nation this past week. NFL VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (3rd year pro; OLB; Clemson University; Adairsville HS)… had five tackles, including a sack Sunday in a 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The NFL sack leader from last season now has four in six games played this season. Beasley missed two games due to injury. Atlanta (4-4) is third in the NFC South after reaching the Super Bowl last February. They host the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes completed another perfect 10-0 regular season this past Friday night and captured their sixth consecutive region championship, but they will have to wait until Monday night to discover their first round opponent in the 2017 Class AAAA state playoffs. The delay is due to a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots in Region 6-AAAA. Southeast Whitfield, Northwest Whitfield, and Pickens each finished with 3-3 region records and were 1-1 against the other two teams in the tie. That means the three teams will compete in a pair of mini-game tiebreakers Monday night at North Murray High School in Chatsworth to decide the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds from 6-AAAA. Northwest Whitfield and Pickens play the first mini-game at 7 p.m. with the winner advancing to the state playoffs. The loser of the first mini-game will then face Southeast Whitfield for the final playoff berth. The order of play was determined by coin toss. The seeding for the two surviving teams will be determined by the head-to-head regular season result between the two qualifying teams. Southeast defeated Northwest in regular season play. Northwest topped Pickens and Pickens defeated Southeast. After the final two teams for the state playoffs are decided Monday night, Cedartown will host the 3rd-seeded team from Region 6-AAAA and Cartersville will host the 4th-seeded team Friday night. The other two first round state playoff pairings between the two regions includes Troup at Heritage-Catoosa and Chapel Hill at Ridgeland. Georgia High School Association tie-breaker mini-games consist of two five-minute halves. Play begins in each half with a free kick and standard game rules and scoring are used. There is a two-minute halftime. Each team is allotted two timeouts in the first five minutes and one timeout in the second five minutes. Any unused timeouts may be carried over from the first half. If the score is tied at the end of the two halves, the teams go to the GHSA 15-yard overtime procedure.

Former Cass soccer standout Cody West wrapped up his collegiate career and former Lady Canes' volleyball star Katie O'Connor set a new career attack record to lead this week's Fall sports 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' update. College basketball season got underway for several NAIA programs including local athletes and the update also includes women's soccer, golf, cross country, tennis, and swimming. NOTE: This past week's football edition of 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' will be published separately. SOCCER MADISON BENNETT — North Greenville University (Soph., D, Woodland HS)… played 16 minutes in the Crusaders 1-0 opening round win over Barton College in the Conference Carolinas tournament last Monday at home. Bennett then added 18 minutes Thursday as NGU (9-7-4) was eliminated by top-seeded Limestone College, 4-0. KATELYN HARBEKE — Life University (Jr., MF, Cass HS)… played all 90 minutes as the Eagles were eliminated from the Mid-South Conference tournament 4-0 by 23rd-ranked Lindsey Wilson (KY). Harbeke started 13 games and played in 15 of 16 this season for Life (4-12). She scored five goals and had three assists for the season, putting 15 of her 21 shots on goal. CODY WEST — Duquesne University (Grad., D, Cass HS)… played all 90 minutes as the Dukes finished their season with a 2-1 loss at Rhode Island. West, a grad student in his final season of eligibility, started all 16 games for Duquesne this season and put one of three shots on goal. Duquesne (3-13-1) was 1-7 in the Atlantic 10 Conference this season. VOLLEYBALL KATIE O’CONNOR — Western Carolina University (Sr., MB, Cartersville HS)… recorded 10 kills, a defensive dig, and three blocks in a 3-1 home win over Wofford last Friday. She then added a career-high 21 kills (.677 attack percentage), a dig, and four blocks in her career final home game which was a 3-1 loss to Furman. The Catamounts (10-17, 5-9 Southern Conference) conclude the regular season Wednesday and Friday with matches at UNC-Greensboro and The Citadel. WCU will then host the SoCon Championship Tournament that begins Friday, November 17. CROSS COUNTRY CASEY BOLAN — Reinhardt University (Fr., Woodland HS)… finished 72nd individually in 24:14 as the Eagles finished fifth at the Appalachian Athletic Conference 5K Championship this past Saturday. The conference championship included 13 teams and 100 runners. Reinhardt finished with 150 points, only two points behind Truett-McConnell University. Milligan won the title with SCAD Atlanta second and Tennessee Wesleyan College third. GOLF HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Senior, Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… shot rounds of 79-77-78 to tie for 25th in the 70-player field as the Lady Bears won and hosted the Idle Hour Collegiate in Macon last Monday through Wednesday. Mercer defeated runner-up Western Kentucky by nine shots. Eastern Kentucky, Rutgers, and Troy rounded out the top five teams in the 11-team field. This was the final Fall 2017 event. The Bears return to the links in February at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Collegiate. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville, GA; Laurel Springs Academy)… picked up a Line 2 singles win over West Virginia’s Paula Goetz (7-6, 6-2) in a Ball State 4-2 singles victory Saturday at the University of Louisville Hidden Duals. She also had a 6-4, 6-4 loss at Line 2 to her Michigan State opponent, Habiba Shaker, in a 5-1 loss to the Spartans Friday and 6-2, 6-1 loss at Line 1 singles to Mariana Humberg of Louisville on Sunday. Gollhofer partnered with teammates Isabelle Dohanics and Julia Sbircea in three doubles losses Friday and Saturday at the final Fall event of the year for the Cardinals. SWIMMING ELISE HART — U.S. Air Force Academy (Sr., Sprint-Free/Fly/Back, Cartersville HS)… in a loss at Northern Arizona University last Friday was part of the first place 200-yard medley relay team (1:46.57). She was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:35.49); finished fourth (59.40) in the 100-yard backstroke; and placed fourth (58.62) in the 100-yard butterfly. In a Saturday win at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Hart was part of the second place 200-yard medley relay team (1:45.52), finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle, and placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. USAFA swims next at the University of Houston Invitational November 16-18. BASKETBALL DARIUS THROWER — Truett McConnell University (Soph., G, Excel Christian Academy)… scored one point and played 20 minutes in the Bears’ opener at Toccoa Falls College last Tuesday night. Thrower gave the Bears a spark off the bench by hitting a pair of three-pointers in the second half of last Saturday’s 81-60 home win over Ave Maria University. TMU (3-0) hosts Columbia International University Tuesday night and Crown College Saturday afternoon. COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… started all three games for the Eagles and averaged almost 30 minutes as Reinhardt started the season winning two of three. They lost 99-98 to Voorhees College (SC) last Monday, but defeated Ave Maria 99-84 last Friday night and Welch College 128-91 this past Saturday. Tobin averaged 17.7 points per game and had a .667 shooting percentage behind the 3-point arc. He added 4.7 rebounds per game and had two blocks and five steals. The Eagles (2-1) travel to Vorhees College (SC) Monday night and host Selma University Tuesday in Waleska. HAKEEM WINTERS — Point University (Jr., F, Cartersville HS)… averaged four points, 3.3 rebounds, and added a block, a steal, and two assists in 12.7 minutes per game as the Skyhawks opened the season winning two of their first three. Point lost 95-86 to Thomas University (GA), but defeated Asbury University 94-91 and Toccoa Falls College 117-79. The Skyhawks (2-1) host Pensacola Christian College Thursday night and travel to Voorhees College (SC) for a Saturday afternoon game.

The Cartersville High School girls cross country team was 15th and the boys team was 19th at the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA State Championship meet Saturday. Marist swept the two team titles. The Marist girls finished 17 points ahead of Oconee County, followed by Blessed Trinity, St. Pius, and White County. The Region 5-AAAA champion Lady Canes at 15th, finished ahead of region rivals Chapel Hill (18th), LaGrange (23rd), and Central-Carroll (24th) in the 30 team field that included 203 individual runners. Nicole Pachuta of Oconee County won the girls Class AAAA race in 19:26. Cartersville was led by Vanna Beach (73rd, 23:43), Alex Machado (79th, 23:58), Zane Bryant (80th, 24:01), Alice Terry (83rd, 24:09), Katie Tolbert (89th, 24:14), Abby Forristall (115th, 25:06) and Kayla Carpenter (129th, 25:28). Knox Pittman of Marist won the Class AAAA boys race and led the War Eagles to the state title. St. Pius was five points behind Marist as team runner-up. North Oconee, Blessed Trinity, and Oconee County rounded out the top five. The Hurricanes qualified for the state meet with a fourth place finish at the Region 5-AAAA meet, but finished ahead of region rivals Chapel Hill (20th) and Sandy Creek (24th) in the 31 team state championship field that was comprised of 219 runners. LaGrange of Region 5-AAAA placed 13th. Cartersville was led by Bill Archer (61st, 18:14). He was followed by Jacob Busek (105th, 19:35), Max Florence (107th, 19:36),Parker Breedlove (142nd, 20:12), Clay Ross (156th, 20:46), Sim Archer (157th, 20:48), and Harrison Banks (164th, 20:57). On a night when Cartersville quarterback Trevor Lawrence broke Deshaun Watson’s Georgia high school career record for touchdown passes, the Hurricanes also captured their sixth consecutive region championship with a 52-13 victory at Troup County. It was the 40th straight win for Cartersville who went undefeated and won state titles each of the last two seasons. Cartersville took a 31-6 lead in the first half on three Rico Frye touchdown runs, a Johnathan Cruz field goal, and a record-tying touchdown pass by Lawrence to Jackson Lowe. After the Canes had taken a 17-0 lead, Montez Crowe connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass for Troup, but the Tigers’ two-point conversion attempt failed. Troup scored first in the third quarter on a 39-yard pass by Crowe to trim the Canes’ lead to 31-13 with 8:22 remaining, but Cartersville added another touchdown run by Frye and the record-breaking touchdown pass by Lawrence. Lawrence connected with J’Kobe Orr on a 20-yard scoring strike to give the Clemson commit 156 career touchdown throws and the state record. The Canes’ defense picked off four passes on the night. Evan Williams, Grant Harris, Dadrian Dennis, and Bradley Kirk each had interceptions. Kirk returned his for a touchdown. Jake Richards recovered a fumble. Frye finished with 187 yards on 20 carries and four touchdowns. Lawrence passed for 200 yards and a pair of scores. Cartersville (10-0) will host the opening round of the Class AAAA state playoffs next Friday against the 4th-seed from Region 6-AAAA. The game will be carried live on WBHF (100.3FM / AM1450).

The Adairsville Tigers scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns capping lengthy drives and blanked host Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in the final period to defeat the Warriors 34-21. The victory also advanced Adairsville to the Class AAA state playoffs next Friday night against a Region 5-AAA opponent to be determined. Mason Boswell came up big for the Tigers in the victory. The junior quarterback ran for 209 yards on 27 attempts with three touchdowns and threw for 40 yards in the game. 137 of his rushing yards came after LFO tied the game in the third quarter. Adairsville fell behind early after a one-yard touchdown run by Warriors' 1000+ yard rusher, junior Nathan Williams, but the Tigers' Travon Branch raced 78 yards for a score on the Adairsville's next possession to make the score 7-6. Josh Honea’s extra point kick hit the right upright. Adairsville then set up their next score by recovering an onside kick. Cody Henderson connected with fellow receiver Ethan Belcher on a 47-yard reverse pass play to set up Boswell’s one yard touchdown run. Boswell then found Christian Steele in the back of the end zone on a two-point conversion pass and a 14-7 lead with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter. The Tigers added another first half score late in the second quarter. Boswell hit Belcher on a slant pass for 27 yards to set up a second Boswell touchdown run with 1:54 remaining in the first half. The 35-yard scamper down the left sideline and Honea's successful PAT gave Adairsville a 21-7 lead. LFO came right back down the field on seven plays and took advantage of four Adairsville penalties. The 80-yard scoring drive was culminated on the final play of the first half when quarterback Zach Vaughn passed to Ruddy Ware for a five yard score. Baley Goins' extra point kick made the score 21-14 at the intermission. The only score of the third quarter was a one yard run by the Warriors’ Vaughn. His keeper capped a 50-yard drive that only took five plays. It was set up by a blocked field goal attempt by Adairsville. Goins’ PAT tied the game 21-21 with 3:36 left in the third period. Adairsville added their two long scoring drives in the final period to put the game away. Boswell, who rushed 228 yards on 27 carries, ended a 92 yard, nine-play drive for the Tigers with a 5-yard touchdown run with 7:19 remaining. That gave Adairsville a 28-21 lead after Honea’s kick. The most crucial play occurred when Boswell converted a fourth and two in the Tigers' own territory with a 36-yard keeper. The final Tigers’ score came with only 1:31 remaining. Daylon Bailey hit paydirt from five yards out to wrap up an 88-yard, 10-play drive that included several strong Boswell runs. Belcher then intercepted a pass on LFO's next possession and the Tigers ran out the clock. Branch finished with six carries for 111 yards and one touchdown. He also added one reception. Burgess rushed for 59 yards on 11 attempts. He also added nine tackles and a pass break up on defense. Bailey ran for a touchdown and 37 yards on five carries. Savaun Henderson chipped in on the defensive side with 11 stops. Adairsville will open the Class AAA state playoffs next Friday as the No. 4 seed from Region 6AAA on the road at top ranked Cedar Grove. The Saints (10-0) have been the No. 1 team in Class AAA most of the season and are the Region 5AAA champions.

The Cass Colonels fell to the Carrollton Trojans Friday night 31-13 to conclude their 2017 campaign. Carrollton took a 31-0 in the first half and outgained the Colonels 240-58 in that span. The Colonels did put points on the board in the second half. Rett Moore connected with Evan Hinton on an 18-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Tripp Breeden added a 1-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter. Carrollton (8-2, 6-2) moves into the Class AAAAA state playoffs next week. Cass finished the season 0-10 overall and 0-8 in Region 7-AAAAA. ROME 62, WOODLAND 0 The Class AAAAA top-ranked Rome Wolves blanked visiting Woodland Friday night 62-0 at Barron Stadium in Rome. The defending state champion Wolves led 55-0 at halftime and limited Woodland to only 24 yards. Rome (10-0, 8-0) moves into the state playoffs next week. Woodland’s season ends with a 3-7 mark. The Wildcats were 2-6 in Region 7-AAAAA.
