The Woodland High School girls cross country team finished second Friday morning at the GHSA State Championship Meet in Carrollton. McIntosh won the state title with 52 points. The defending state champion Lady Cats followed with 71 points. Starr’s Mill (129 points) finished third in the Girls Class AAAAA meet while Flowery Branch (140) and Grady (162) rounded out the top five teams. Woodland’s Carli Clymer was 5th overall in 19:50. She was followed by teammates Angela Cochran (20:08) in 12th place, McKenna Trapheagen (20:33) in 16th place, Lindsay Scifers (20:34) 18th, Cheyenne Spinks (20:49) 20th, Baylee Evans (21:01) 24th, and Makenzie Stephenson (22:37) 61st. The girls individual champion was Erin Leonard of Jones County. She completed the 5K course in 18:43. The Class AAAAA Girls Championship race included 30 qualifying teams and 204 individual runners. In the boys Class AAAAA State Championship race, Woodland’s Levi Brandenburg ran 62nd overall in 18:26 to lead the Wildcats to a 22nd place finish among 32 qualifying teams and 226 individual runners. McIntosh won the boys’ title with 72 points, followed by Starr’s Mill (122), Clarkston (165), Clarke Central (182), and Grady (192). The Class AAAAA boys individual champion was Nick Nyman of Starr's Mill. He ran the 5K championship course in 16:09.2. The Woodland boys qualified for state with a fourth place finish at the Region 7-AAAAA meet, but finished third among teams from their region at state by edging East Paulding by 11 points. Other runners for Woodland were Reece Mitchell (127th, 19:18), Dylan Stermer (130th, 19:19), Patrick Bollerk (133rd, 19:23), Kobe Cochran (140th, 19:32), Gabe Shephard (160th, 19:55), and Dawson McClure (172nd, 20:07).

Former Adairsville standout Marcus Childers was named Mid-America Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping lead his Northern Illinois Huskies to a three-point, overtime win over Eastern Michigan last Thursday night. He was 23-of-40 passing for 278 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 54 yards on 16 carries and ran for one touchdown. Childers, who has won three starts in a row after taking over the position, was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week. He is now 78-for-127 for 872 yards on the season with nine touchdowns and one interception. He has rushed 91 times for 399 yards. DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (Fr., OL, Cartersville HS)… Curtis started at center Saturday for a Brevard offense that rolled up 645 total yards in a 58-42 win over North Carolina Wesleyan. A senior member of the Lady Canes’ cross country and track teams, Forristall finished sixth overall (21:49, 5K) at the Region 5-AAAA Cross Country Championships October 26 to help lead her team to a one-point win over Chapel Hill. “Without Abby’s impressive effort in the race, but perhaps more importantly her leadership in guiding many younger girls on the team, Cartersville would not have been able to defend its Region title from a year ago. Daughter of Shawn and Stacey Forristall, Abby is an honor roll student who has been the Lady Canes’ Most Valuable Runner and has earned two-sport multi-year letters. Cameron Gonyea is the October Elite Athlete of the Week representing Cass High School. The son of John and Arlena Longley, Cameron has multiple offers from various colleges and plans to continue his football career at the next level. He also competes in track and field at Cass. The Adairsville High School Elite Athlete of the Month for October is Brendan “Lug” Luginbuhl. A sophomore wrestler and member of the Adairsville JROTC Raiders team, he is the son of Jason Luginbuhl and Sabrina & Ray Tucker. Luginbuhl is a 4.0 GPA student taking Honor’s classes and is a dedicated leader for wrestling coach Ryan Torrence. “Lug is always at workouts. Every time the weight room is open before or after school, he is there. He has also taken it upon himself to be a role model and leader to our freshman athletes. He leads by example. His work ethic in the off season has paid off in dividends, ensuring that he will be hold a critical role in the varsity line up this season,” said Torrence. Luginbuhl plans to attend West Point or University of North Georgia before pursuing a career in the Army. Demarcus Williams is the Woodland High School October Elite Athlete of the Month. A hard-running, sophomore running back and linebacker for the Wildcats’ football team, Williams also wrestles and competes in track and field. Williams accumulated 213 yards rushing, three touchdowns, and had a 12-yard touchdown catch in the month of October. “Demarcus is part of a tough, hard nosed backfield that has been able to grind out tough yards,” said Wildcats’ head football coach Tony Plott. ”This approach has allowed us to shorten games and be in position to have success this year. Demarcus has become one of our leaders on offense. He has a great desire to be successful and isn't afraid of putting in the extra work to accomplish his goals.” Williams, son of Nycole Hillebrandt and Jenny Heath, plans to attend college and continue his football playing career at the next level. For the fifth time in the last seven years, Cartersville Country Club has captured the Georgia State Golf Association Team Championship. The Cartersville Country Club team of Chad Branton, Cres Dodd, Kyle Hosick, and Justin Johnson survived frigid temperatures and gusty winds on Sunday to win by three shots over runner-up Atlanta Athletic Club at The Georgia Club. The championship course played at par-72, 6,929 yards in Statham, Georgia October 28-29. Cartersville Country Club shot a 5-under-par 355 total score and trails only Lanier Golf Club in total titles during the 25 years of the event. Lanier Golf Club has seven titles. Athens Country Club placed third with a 2-over-par total. St. Ives Country Club was fourth at 4-over-par, while Golf Club of Georgia and Ashton Hills Country Club tied for fifth at 7-over-par. Kingston resident Spencer Fields was the individual champion and led his Rhodes College cross country team to the Southern Athletic Association conference championship Saturday at Nash Farms Battlefield in Hampton, GA. The Lynx, who took five of the top six spots in the conference race, advance to the NCAA D-III regionals in Virginia November 11. GOLF MAGGIE ASHMORE — Augusta University (Sr., Kingston, GA, Heritage Golf Academy, Hilton Head, SC). . . tied for 60th in a 73-player field as the Jaguars placed 11th of thirteen teams at the Atlanta Athletic Club Ladies Fall Intercollegiate Invitational. Ashmore shot rounds of 88-79 and was fourth on her team. Kennesaw State and Louisville were named tournament co-champions after Sunday’s final round was cancelled due to weather. Illinois, Georgia, and Indiana rounded out the top five teams. This was the final Fall event for Augusta who will continue the 2017-18 season in February. LINDSAY BONNER — York College (PA) (Fr., Cartersville HS). . . was fourth on her team and 13th individually in the 28-player field as York College won the five-team Goucher Fall Invitational played at Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, MD. It was the final Fall tournament for York. Other teams in the field were runner-up University of Mary Washington, Goucher College, Southern Virginia, and Juniata College. Bonner shot 106-103 in the 36-hole event. HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS). . . had a team leading 7-over-par, 54-hole total and tied for 12th overall with rounds of 77-76-70 last Sunday through Tuesday at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Championship played at Turtle Point GC in Kiawah Island, SC. The Bears finished 8th in the 17-team field that included 90 players. The tournament was won by Ole Miss. Mercer hosts the Idle Hour Collegiate Championship Monday and Tuesday October 30-31 in Macon.

Mason Boswell scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and threw for another as Adairsville blanked Haralson County in Tallapoosa, 32-0. Boswell ran for a 16-yard score in the first quarter; connected with Dakota Hughes on a 75-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter; and added a 30-yard scoring scamper in the third quarter. The Tigers’ quarterback also fumbled at the 2-yard line on a carry that was run in for a touchdown by teammate Daylon Bailey in the first half to give Adairsville a 26-0 lead at the intermission. Adairsville senior offensive lineman Maddox Teems scored the Tigers other first half touchdown on a one-yard run. Bryce Burgess rushed for 109 yards on 15 carries for the Tigers. Boswell carried 12 times for 108 yards (2 TDs) and was 4-of-11 passing for 95 yards and one touchdown. Dakota Hughes and Savaun Henderson led the Tigers’ defense with 10 and 11 tackles, respectively. Haralson County falls to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in Region 6-AAA-South with the loss. Adairsville (5-4, 2-2) will be the 3rd seed from Region 6-AAA-South next Friday and travel to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, Region 6-AAA-North runner up, for a region playoff game. The winner advances to the Class AAA state playoffs. KELL 21, WOODLAND 12 Woodland gave playoff bound Kell a tussle Friday night in the Wildcats' final home game of the year, but came up short in the Region 7-AAAAA matchup, 21-12. Brody Williams scored the first of his two touchdowns on a three-yard run in the opening quarter and Kell’s Evan Conley connected with Blake Simpson with 2:45 left in the first quarter. A scoreless second period left Kell with a 7-6 lead at the break. The visiting Longhorns took a 14-6 lead with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter on a long touchdown run by Dre Houston, but the Wildcats bounced right back. Woodland’s Titus Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to the Kell five yard line and Brody Williams punched it in the end zone with a short run to narrow the margin to 14-12 after the two-point conversion attempt failed. A 59-yard screen pass from Conley to Houston with 7:11 left in the game supplied Kell’s final score. Kell improved to 5-4 overall and 5-2 in region play. Woodland (3-6, 2-5) closes out the season next Friday at top-ranked Rome. VILLA RICA 42, CASS 7 Visiting Villa Rica scored on its first three possessions and the Wildcats’ defensive penetration limited Cass most of the night in a 42-7 decision at Cass’ Doug Cochran Stadium. Villa Rica (5-5, 3-5) got first half touchdown runs from Deshante Holloway (20-yards), Phillip Zachery (40-yards), and Brandon Shackleford (55-yards) to go with a 67-yard touchdown strike from Kelvin Stevenson to Mecose Todd to take a 28-0 lead at halftime. Terry Joiner scooped up a fumbled punt snap and raced 35 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter to give the Wildcats a 35-0 lead and Todd added a 51-yard touchdown run with 5:13 left in the third quarter. Villa Rica kicker Luke Darby successfully added all six PATs. Cass drove 98 yards late in the third quarter for the Colonels’ only score. Logan Nelson connected with Cameron Gonyea for an 11-yard touchdown pass and Kaleb Speights added the extra point. Cass (0-9, 0-7) hosts Carrollton next Friday.

The Woodland girls cross country team captured the first six places Thursday on their way to winning the Region 7-AAAAA Cross Country Championship held on the Woodland High School campus. While the Woodland girls were first with a perfect score of 15, the Woodland boys also qualified for the Class AAAAA state meet by finishing fourth. In the girls’ race, Rome (56), East Paulding (86), and Hiram (99) were the second through fourth place teams earning berths at the state meet in Carrollton next weekend. Carli Clymer led the way for the Lady Cats and won the individual race in 19:23. She was followed by teammates Angela Cochran (19:45), McKenna Trapheagen (20:01), Baylee Evans (20:08), Cheyenne Spinks (20:08), and Lindsay Scifers (20:12). Mackenzie Stephenson (18th, 22:31) rounded out the Lady Cats finish. The boys’ team title was won by Rome with 38 points. Hiram (55) and East Paulding (81) were second and third. The Wildcats, who finished only three points behind East Paulding and five points ahead of fifth place Carrollton, were led by Levi Brandenburg (17:45) and Dylan Stermer (17:50) with seventh and eighth place individual finishes. Reece Mitchell (20th, 18:39), Patrick Bollwerk (24th, 18:48), Kobe Cochran (25th, 18:50), Gabe Shephard (36th, 19:22), and Ian Van Order (40th, 20:06) completed the Wildcats contributions. The Cass boys finished ninth. Prem Patel (34th, 19:17), Ethan Williams (47th, 20:46), Logan Van Stinj (52nd, 21:41), Craigory Chatmon (53rd, 21:44), and Samuel Reyes (60th, 28:17) were the Cass contributors. The Cass girls did not enter a complete scoring team. The Adairsville boys cross country team was edged by Murray County Thursday for a state meet berth from Region 6-AAA at the league's championship race in Gordon County. The Tigers, who were looking for back-to-back trips to the state meet, placed fifth behind region winner Calhoun, Coahulla Creek, Sonoraville, and Murray County. Each of the three GHSA regions including local teams are moving into their final two weekends of the regular season with some interesting tests ahead for state playoff contenders. Region 7-AAAAA Rome has all but secured the top spot in Region 7-AAAAA and continues to reign at No. 1 in the classification with an 8-0 mark. The Wolves have a two-game lead over state playoff contenders Carrollton, Kell, East Paudling, and Paulding County. Kell and Carrollton have been in-and-out of the Top Ten all season and are favored to take two of the three remaining state playoff berths from this region. The final spot could come boil down to the November 3 county rivalry game of East Paulding at Paulding County. Elsewhere in Class AAAAA, Buford (6-1), Stockbridge (8-0), Warner Robins (8-0), Jones Co. (8-0), Bainbridge (6-2), Starr’s Mill (7-1), Wayne Co. Region 5-AAAA Cartersville (9-0) continues its streak as the No. 1 team in Class AAAA following a 62-0 shutout of Chapel Hill. It was the Canes 39th consecutive win in a three year streak that includes back-to-back Class AAAA state championships. Trevor Lawrence -- a Clemson commit -- was 16-of-22 passing for 288 yards and four touchdowns in last week's win. For the season, he is 134-of-183 passing for 2,648 yards and 34 touchdowns with only one interception. Lawrence also now holds the state record for passing yards in a career (13,260) and needs just one TD pass to tie the career record of 155 held by Deshaun Watson (Houston Texans, Clemson Tigers, Gainesville HS). Cedartown and Troup County are also Region 5-AAAA members in the state's Top Ten this week. The Buldogs edged the Tigers 21-18 last Friday to make a return trip into the rankings. It was Troup's first loss of the year. As for the remainder of Class AAAA in the polls, Marist (8-0), Thomson (7-0), Ridgeland (8-0), Burke Co. (8-0), Blessed Trinity (7-2), and Woodward Academy (8-1) hold down positions 2-7. Mary Persons (6-2) is ranked ninth. Region 6-AAA With its sub-region divisions, Region 6-AAA has some of the most intriguing state playoff possibilities moving into this week's games. The top four seeds from each sub-region will face off November 3 to determine the region's four state playoff qualifiers. This week, each sub-region determines its top two seeds for those games. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe and North Murray square off in the North sub-region while Class AAA 4th-ranked Calhoun (7-1) travels to 7th-ranked Bremen (8-0) to determine the top spot in the South. The losers of those two games will be the No. 2 seeds for the November 3 games for their respective sub-regions. Adairsville holds the No. 3 South spot and Sonoraville is No. 4 in the South. Up North, Ringgold is third and Murray County fourth. All of the November 3 games will be hosted by the North sub-region teams. In the Class AAA state-wide rankings, Cedar Grove (8-0) is No. 1, followed by Peach Co. (7-1) and Greater Atlanta Christian (8-1) in spots two and three. Jenkins (8-0) and Crisp Co. (6-1) are ranked fifth and sixth. Lovett (5-3), Morgan Co. (7-1), and Westminster (3-5) round out the AAA Top Ten. Lowndes (9-0) is No. 1 in Class AAAAAAA, just ahead of unbeatens Archer (8-0) and Walton (8-0). Tucker (7-1) is the top ranked team in Class AAAAAA.
