Havyn Isaac’s three-run home run in the bottom of the tenth inning lifted Adairsville softball to an 8-5 walk-off win over visiting Ringgold Wednesday night in a Region 6-AAA battle. Isaac was 6-for-6 in the contest with singles in the first, second, sixth, and eighth innings. She also doubled in the fourth inning to go with her tenth inning homer. Isaac finished with six RBIs and scored twice. Loren Harris (10 IP, 5R, 0ER, 12H, 1BB, 3K) went the distance to pick up the pitching victory. Victoria O’Neal had three hits for the Lady Tigers. Harris (RBI) and Sierra Tanner added a pair of hits each. Emily Collum and Cortni Jacobs chipped in with one hit each. Mia DeAngelis tossed a complete-game shutout for the Lady Longhorns and fanned 17 Cass batters. She walked three and allowed only three hits. A walk, a single, and four stolen bases led to Kell’s second inning run that gave the Longhorns a 1-0 lead. Niya McDuffie hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning that put Kell up 3-0. Haley Owens (3.1 IP, 3ER, 7H, 1BB, 1K) was tagged with the pitching loss for Cass. Taylor Gibson (2.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) did not allow a baserunner in relief. Cass (2-12, 0-6) plays at Woodland Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CARROLLTON 10, WOODLAND 2 Host Carrollton scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning Wednesday night on their way to a 10-2 defeat of Woodland in five innings. The Lady Trojans sent 10 batters to the plate in the first inning and took their early lead on three singles, a double, two walks, and a pair of Lady Cats’ errors. Scout Jennings doubled and homered for Carrollton. Savannah Cook also had two hits including a home run. Olivia Fannin struck out eight and scattered four hits and five walks to pick up the pitching win. Sarah Baynard (3 IP, 8R, 1ER, 7H, 2BB) suffered the loss for Woodland. Madi Bentley (1.2 IP, 2ER, 2H) took the circle in relief for the Lady Cats. Skylar Chappell (double), Kendyl Hardin (RBI), Ansley Evans, and Morgan Bailey had hits for Woodland. Carrollton improved to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (5-7, 2-4) hosts Cass Thursday.

The USA Baseball 18U National Team advanced to the Super Round of the 2017 World Baseball Softball Confederation U-18 Baseball World Cup Tuesday night with an 8-1 win over Cuba as one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the tournament. The tournament continues through September 10 in Thunder Bay, Canada. Korea is the other undefeated team in the competition. Cartersville High School senior, Anthony Seigler, was a major source of offensive production for USA with a 2-for-4 performance that included two RBIs, a walk, and two runs scored. It was Seigler’s first start as DH and he hit in the cleanup spot in the order. Teammate Alek Thomas was 3-for-4 and also had two RBIs as the U.S. scored all eight runs with two outs. USA trailed 1-0 in the middle of the second inning, but scored eight unanswered runs and USA pitchers limited Cuba to no earned runs and only three hits. Starting right-hand pitcher Cole Wilcox (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 3BB, 5K) from nearby Chickamauga, GA picked up the USA win. Kumar Rocker of Watkinsville, GA (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 2K) and J.T. Ginn (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) each worked a shutout inning to close out the victory. USA U-18, now 5-0 in the tournament, also has wins over South Africa, Mexico, Japan, and Netherlands. Seigler started at catcher and hit in the four-spot Monday in a 5-0 win over South Africa. He had eight putouts and an assist defensively and was 1-for-4 with a triple and one RBI at the plate. In a 4-0 shutout of Japan last Saturday, Seigler started at catcher, had eight putouts and three assists and was 0-for-2 at the plate with two walks. In the tournament opener last Friday, USA pounded Netherlands 11-0 with Seigler starting behind the plate and batting fifth in the order. He drew one walk in an 0-for-3 performance. He recorded 15 putouts in the game, all on strikeouts of Netherlands batters. Through five games, Seigler has started four and is 3-for-13 with a triple, three RBIs, and one run scored. He has drawn four walks with an on-base percentage of .412. Defensively, he has a 1.000 fielding percentage in 35 total chances. Team USA, who has enjoyed dominant pitching through the first five games of World Cup action, is the three-time defending World Cup champion and is looking to become the second country to win four-straight gold medals in the tournament. The U.S. pitchings staff has a combined 0.22 ERA over 41 innings tossed by 10 different pitchers. The staff has 59 strikeouts, has allowed only 12 hits, and opponents only have a .094 batting average against them. Team USA won Group B of the 12-team format with Japan finishing second in the division with a 4-1 mark. Cuba is 3-2, Netherlands 2-3, and both Mexico and Russia are 0-4 heading to Wednesday play. In Group A, Australia and China Taipei both finished 3-2 in pool play and tied for second place behind undefeated Korea. Canada is 2-2, Italy 1-4, and Nicaragua is 0-4 with Wednesday’s game pending. Canada can force a three-team tie-breaker to be used if the hosts can defeat Nicaragua Wednesday evening. Only the top three teams in each group qualify for the Super Round. USA has Wednesday off and will learn its opponent for the Super Round following Wednesday’s results. The Super Round continues Thursday through Saturday with the top four teams advancing to the World Cup Bronze Medal and Gold Medal games on Sunday. The top two teams following the Super Round will play for the gold medal. The third and fourth place teams after the Super Round will play for bronze.

Cartersville volleyball swept its opening Area 5-AAAA matches Tuesday night in Carrollton with wins over Cedartown and Central-Carroll. The Lady Canes won both matches in straight sets. The Lady Canes topped Cedartown 25-14, 25-12 and took down Central-Carroll 25-21, 25-16. "Our setters and middles played well tonight," said Lady Canes head coach Dustin Cothran. "Nedu Evans was dominant on offense and defense. We are starting to get some girls healthy now, so the lineup is changing a little. We will be better as those girls continue to heal and gel with the others." Cartersville (13-2, 2-0) travels to Chapel Hill next Tuesday to face the host Panthers and play Troup. Emmaline Payne had eight kills and 10 digs for Woodland in the win over the Lady Patriots. Madison Mayton contributed five aces and seven digs. Caitlin Hampton had three aces and six digs. Kell defeated Woodland 25-20, 25-19. Mayton finished with three kills, four aces, and four digs for the Lady Cats. CASS DROPS AREA MATCHES Cass volleyball dropped a pair of Area 7-AAAAA matches Tuesday night to Carrollton and Hiram at Hiram High School. Carrollton defeated the Lady Colonels 25-10, 25-12 and the host Hornets knocked off Cass 25-11, 27-25. Kyler Trouten, Alexis Ware, and Madison Philpott all hustled extremely well tonight," said Cass coach Chelsea Morris. "They showed leadership and helped keep the team's spirits up." While Justin Thomas was winning the PGA Tour’s Dell Technologies Championship Monday at TPC Boston, two of the three players affiliated with Cartersville Country Club’s Scott Hamilton Golf Academy and/or Athletic Motion Golf advanced to the third of four FedExCup Playoff Tournaments. SHGA/AMG players Hudson Swafford and Charles Howell III will advance in the playoffs, while Woodstock’s Chris Kirk was eliminated. Only the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will play in the BMW Championship September 14-17 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois. From there, only the top 30 players will advance to the PGA Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta September 21-24. Swafford shot rounds of 69-68-70-69 (8-under-par) in Boston and moved up five spots in the FedEx Cup standings to 33rd place heading into the BMW. Howell missed the cut in Boston, but started the event in 28th position and fell to 35th. Kirk, who started 95th in the standings needed a high ranking finish to reach to top 70. He shot rounds of 70-68-76-70 to tie for 47th at the Dell Technologies. Joe Durant, a SHGA player on the PGA Champions Tour, tied for sixth place this past weekend at the Shaw Charity Classic in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Durant shot round of 65-67-66 (12-under-par) in the tournament won by Scott McCarron. Region football standings for local schools. Adairsville (2-1) won for the second straight week with a dominating first half performance over visiting Model. The Tigers led 28-0 in the first half on their way to a 49-14 non-region win. The Tigers travel to Ringgold (1-2) this Friday. Cartersville (3-0) routed Calhoun for the second straight year. Trevor Lawrence was 13-of-20 passing for 317 yards and four touchdowns. Rico Frye rushed for 61 yards and scored three touchdowns including one on a 59-yard screen pass. The Canes play Friday at Westlake (1-1). Woodland (1-1) ended the state's second-longest losing streak Friday with a 31-30 overtime win over visiting Rockmart (1-2). Tied 23-23 at the end of regulation, Rockmart scored and kicked its PAT to lead 30-23 on its first possession of the overtime, but Woodland scored and converted a two-point conversion pass to pick up the win. It was the Wildcats' first win since September 25, 2015 and ended a 17-game skid. Woodland travels to Region 7AAAAA and county rival Cass this week. Cass led 13-0 at halftime and outgained Sonoraville in the game 236-77, but lost 14-13 to fall to 0-2 on the season. Sonoraville scored on a short drive after a blocked punt and on a 40-yard fumble return for a touchdown. The Colonels host Woodland this Friday.

The cross country teams from Cartersville High School and Adairsville High School participated Saturday in the Clara Bowl 5K Invitational at Berry College. The Cartersville girls team placed 24th in the 33-team race that included 310 runners. Adairsville did not field a complete team for scoring. Harrison won the girls championship with 96 points. Creekview (111) finished second, Ravenwood (141) third, with White County (150) and Marietta (150) finishing tied for fourth place. The Cartersville boys placed 29th and Adairsville was 32nd in the 40-team boys race that included 351 runners. St. Pius X won the boys race with 149 points. Mill Creek (160) was second. The Adairsville softball team defeated Cass 10-2 in five innings Saturday afternoon to capture the 2017 Komatsu Bartow County Softball Championship Tournament at the Stars Complex — home of the Georgia Highlands College Chargers. Adairsville defeated Woodland 6-2 Friday in one semifinal and Cass knocked off Cartersville 8-3 in the other semifinal to set up Saturday’s championship game. The Lady Tigers started quickly with first inning, solo home runs by Havyn Isaac and Emily Collum and were never challenged on the scoreboard by the Lady Colonels. Adairsville added three more runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead and Tigers’ pitcher Loren Harris (5 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 3K) really didn’t need much more for her complete-game win. Sierra Tanner finished with two hits and three RBIs for Adairsville. Isaac and Sadye Johnson both had two hits and one RBI. CARTERSVILLE COMEBACK EDGES WOODLAND In the third place game, Cartersville scored three unanswered runs across the fifth and sixth innings to edge Woodland in come-from-behind fashion, 6-5. Allie Jackson of the Lady Canes, who finished with three hits, three RBIs, and scored two runs, had a two-RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for the game’s deciding runs. Colbi Ballard (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 6K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of Cartersville starting pitcher Lauren McElhaney (4 IP, 5ER, 3H, 4BB, 4K). Paris Poston had a three-hit game for the Canes and drove in a run. Hope Short, Ballard (RBI), Presley Edwards, Kalli Scheff, and Cio Seigler added hits in the Lady Canes’ 11-hit attack. Cartersville improved to 4-7 overall with their win. Woodland now has a 5-6 mark. Adairsville defeated Woodland 6-2 and Cass knocked off Cartersville 8-3 in Friday night’s semifinals of the 2017 Komatsu Bartow County Fast Pitch Softball Championship at Stars Complex. As a result, Woodland will play Cartersville Saturday at 11 a.m. for third place. Cartersville and Cass will square off for the tournament championship Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games will be at the Stars Complex just off U.S. 41 in Cassville and will broadcast live on WBHF (100.3 FM / AM1450). Pregame coverage will begin at 10:45 a.m. In Friday’s opener, Adairsville took a 4-0 lead after two innings against Woodland and pushed their lead to 6-0 in the fifth inning. The Lady Cats scored two runs in the sixth, but would get no closer. Loren Harris (7 IP, 2ER, 5H, 1BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win for the Lady Tigers. She also had two hits and drove in a run. In Friday’s second game, Cartersville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Cass scored four runs in the bottom half of the third and three more in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. The Lady Colonels then added an insurance run in the sixth for an 8-3 final. Woodland snapped a 17-game losing streak Friday night with a 31-30 overtime victory at home over Rockmart. The Wildcats had not won a game since September of 2015, but ended that streak with an overtime, two-point conversion completion from Titus Jones to Zach Pitner. Rockmart scored in their overtime possession on a 12-yard run by Markus Smith to go ahead 30-23 with an extra point. Woodland responded with an OT score of their own that came on a 6-yard Demarcus Williams run. Woodland, who had lined up in a “swinging gate” formation on extra point attempts the entire night, did not shift this time to kick. Instead, the direct snap went to Jones who found Pitner with a high lob for a game-deciding two point play. The two teams traded 63-yard touchdown runs in the games’ first minute. Z.J. Whatley scored on the Yellow Jackets first play from scrimmage and Woodland’s Justice Carter returned the favor on the Wildcats first play from scrimmage. Michael Campuzano made his PAT kick for Woodland to take a 7-6 lead. Early in the second quarter, Woodland took a 14-6 lead with an 84-yard, 9-play drive capped on a 15-yard touchdown run by Demarcus Williams. Rockmart scored a safety midway through the second quarter when a low snap was fielded in the end zone by Woodland quarterback Brody Williams. He was swarmed under by pursuing Yellow Jackets to narrow the Wildcats’ lead to 14-8 at halftime. On the Yellow Jackets’ first possession of the third quarter, they marched 89 yards in four plays to grab a 15-14 lead. Quarterback Dylan Bailey connected with Reed Couch on a 49-yard touchdown pass and Hunter England converted the point after. Woodland regained the lead with 0:45 remaining in the third quarter. on a 30-yard field goal by Capuzano. The field goal culminated a 50-yard, 13-play drive. Rockmart went back on top with 8:55 remaining in the game 23-17. The same combination — Bailey to Couch — hooked up for the scoring play that wrapped up a 9-play, 49-yard drive and gave the Yellow Jackets a 23-17 lead. Woodland responded with an 89-yard, 9-play drive that ended with a 1-yard scoring plunge by Brody Williams. The snap and hold were bobbled on the extra point attempt but holder Titus Jones scrambled long enough to find an open receiver in the end zone for an apparent two-point conversion. Flags negated the conversion, however, and Woodland would ultimately miss a lenthy PAT kick to send the game to overtime tied 23-23. Woodland (1-1) travels across town next Friday to face county rival and Region 7-AAAAA foe Cass in a 7:30 pm kickoff. Boswell scored on runs of 3- and 5-yards. Branch had a scoring run of 21-yards and scored on fumble recovery the he took 40 yards for a score. Model made it 28-14 at the half with a pair of second quarter scores. Blue Devils’ quarterback Jackson Couch found Kwalic Dublin for a 16-yard scoring pass and then connected with Kiron Ford on a 44-yard play. Boswell added his third TD in the third quarter when he found Ethan Belcher for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Christian Steele added a 65-yard touchdown run and Derrick Simmons scored on an 80-yard scamper. Adairsville (2-1) is idle next Friday and will travel to Ringgold on September 22. CARTERSVILLE 58, CALHOUN 6 Class AAAA No. 1 Cartersville pounded Class AAA No. 4 Calhoun Friday night at the Canes’ Weinman Stadium, 58-6. The victory runs Cartersville’s current win streak to 33 straight games including back-to-back state titles. Cartersville quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw four four touchdowns and ran for one more as the Canes took a 58-0 lead in the first half. Lawrence had TD passes to JKobe Orr, E.J. Turner, T.J. Horton, and Rico Frye. He also ran for a 6-yard touchdown. Frye also added a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs and Marcus Gary had a 21-yard rush for a touchdown. Cartersville (3-0) plays at Westlake next Friday. The game will be carried live on WBHF (100.3FM / AM1450) with pregame coverage starting at 6 p.m SONORAVILLE 14, CASS 13 Cass took a 13-0 lead in the first half and limited the host Phoenix to only 14 yards rushing and three first downs in the first 24 minutes, but Sonoraville rallied in the second half for a come-from-behind non-region win. The Colonels scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Rett Moore to Malik Grimes in the first quarter and a 60-yard run by Thomas Gilliam in the second quarter to take a 13-0 advantage into the intermission. A blocked punt set up Sonoraville’s first touchdown in the third quarter. Patrick Moore scored for the Phoenix on a 6-yard run to narrow the Cass lead to 13-7. A Cass fumble was returned 35 yards for Sonoraville’s second touchdown in the third quarter. The extra point gave the Phoenix a 14-13 lead that would hold up over the final period.
