The American Baseball Coaches Association released Tuesday the names of 11 individuals to be inducted to the ABCA Hall of Fame in January 2018. Among those listed is new Cartersville High School head baseball coach, Bobby Howard. Howard will take the reins of the Hurricanes program beginning with the 2017-18 school year after filling the spot vacated by Stuart Chester's move to Buford High School in May. The induction to the ABCA Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed by the organization which was founded in 1945. The ABCA Hall of Fame began in 1966. The 2018 ABCA Hall of Fame inductions will be held during the ABCA Convention on January 5, 2018 at the J.W. Marriott in Indianapolis, IN. With a career coaching record of 985-296 (.769) and a total of 12 Georgia high school state championships, Bobby Howard has distinguished himself as one of the most successful high school baseball coaches of all time. Howard spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama, where he led his teams to back-to-back area playoff appearances, including a 2016 7A region championship. Prior to his time at Central, Howard spent 37 seasons as the head coach at Columbus High School in Columbus, Georgia, where he racked up 12 state championships and eight state runner-up finishes to go along with 29 region championships. In 2004 and 2012, his teams finished the season ranked No. 2 in all national polls. The 11-time State Coach of the Year was recognized as the ABCA/Diamond National High School Coach of the Year in 2000, as well as an ABCA/Diamond Regional Coach of the Year in 2000, 2005 and 2012. He was also named USA Today's 2004 National High School Coach of the Year and ESPN's National High School Coach of the Year in 2012. In 2005, Howard was selected to serve as the head coach of the Aflac East High School All-America team, where he had the opportunity to coach the best high school players in the country. Howard has coached several players who have gone to play professional baseball, including MLB Hall of Famer Frank Thomas. Among Howard's other former players to make it to the Major League Level are Garey Ingram, Reggie Abercrombie and Willie Harris. As a coach, Howard is a member of the Georgia Dugout Club Sports Hall of Fame, the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame and the Sunbelt Classic Hall of Fame. He has also been inducted into the Columbus State University and Jordan High School Halls of Fame as a player. The Jordan High School graduate has coached at several other schools including his alma mater Jordan High, Chattahoochee Valley Community College, Kendrick High School and Middle Georgia College. In his lone year at Middle Georgia, Howard led his team to a 1997 state championship. The 34-year ABCA member has been a featured speaker at the ABCA Convention and has spoken at several state coaching clinics across the South. Howard has also served the National High School Baseball Coaches Association for five years as a member of the Southeast All-Region and All-America Committee.

Two more local youth baseball teams are in the final week of preparations for their respective 2017 Georgia Little League Baseball State Tournaments. The Cartersville Little League (10-12-year-old) all-stars and the Bartow County Junior Little League (13-14-year-old) all-stars will both play in state tournaments that begin Saturday, July 22. The two championship tournaments are double-elimination format. Cartersville Little League (10-12A, District 1 champions) will open against Dudley Little League (Dublin, GA) Saturday at 1:30pm. The Georgia tournament is being hosted by Peachtree City Little League. Scott Stallings on the PGA Tour and Joe Durant on the PGA Champions Tour both collected Top 10 finishes this past weekend on their respective tours. The two are professional golfers affiliated with Cartersville County Club's Scott Hamilton Golf Academy and/or Athletic Motion Golf. Stallings tied for fifth place at the John Deere Classic Sunday and briefly held the lead in Silvis, Illinois before Bryson DeChambeau made a furious back-nine charge to win his first PGA Tour event. Charles Howell III, Ben Crane, Chris Kirk, and Boo Weekley were the other SHGA/AMG players to make the cut at the John Deere Classic. Howell tied for 19th and Crane finished in a tie for 25th. Stallings moved up twenty-four spots to 108th in the season-long FedExCup standings. Howell held steady at 18th place and Crane moved up four spots to 144th. On the senior PGA Champions Tour, Joe Durant earned another strong finish with a tie for sixth at the Constellation Senior Players Championship -- one of five majors on that tour. Although the Cartersville High School football lost out to the Atlanta Falcons as the Team of the Year at the Atlanta Sports Awards ceremony last Thursday night, coach Joey King’s Purple Hurricanes were one of only three finalists for the award along with the girls’ basketball team from McEachern High School. The Canes' back-to-back, undefeated state championships in Georgia's Class 4A was edged out by the Super Bowl playoff run by Atlanta's NFL franchise. The Atlanta Sports Council honored the area’s best athletes and teams Thursday at the 12th annual Atlanta Sports Awards held at The Rialto Center for the Arts on the campus of Georgia State University. The gala-style event was emceed by 11Alive’s Jeff Hullinger. The evening included a private reception and silent auction followed by the awards show and post-event party. The ceremony also featured appearances from several Atlanta favorites, including former Atlanta Falcon and college football star Warrick Dunn, professional golfer and Georgia Tech graduate, Roberto Castro, as well as celebrity presenter Ed Roland, front man of multi-platinum recording artist, and Atlanta-based, Collective Soul. The Bartow County and Cartersville Recreation Department 8-and-under coach pitch teams were eliminated at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Tournament in Calhoun Thursday night. Cartersville 8U lost to Rockmart 18-2 to finish the tournament in fourth place with a 2-2 mark. Bartow County 8U fell to Gordon County 12-8 and Rockmart 17-12 Thursday evening to also finish the tournament with a 2-2 record and in third place. In the GRPA 12U Traditional Baseball State Tournament in Effingham County, Bartow County 12U was eliminated Thursday morning by Moultrie-Colquitt County, 8-3. The Bartow County 10-and-under machine pitch softball team finished in fourth place at the GRPA State Tournament in Bainbridge. Bartow 10U finished 2-2 in the double-elimination event with wins over Grady County 12-11 and Swainsboro-Emmanel County 7-5. The Bartow County 8-and-under coach pitch baseball team won its second straight game to open the 2017 Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Tournament Wednesday night in Calhoun with an 11-3 victory over Calhoun. Wednesday’s win comes on the heels of an opening round 20-10 win over Rockmart Tuesday. Meanwhile, Cartersville 8-and-under coach pitch won a pair of elimination games Wednesday night to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament. Cartersville, who fell to Gainesville Tuesday night, defeated Clayton County 18-10 and Calhoun 19-12 Wednesday evening. Bartow (2-0) plays Gordon County (2-0) Thursday at 5pm in Calhoun in a battle of the two remaining unbeaten teams in the state tournament. Cartersville (2-1) takes on Rockmart (2-1) at 6:30pm and the winner of that game will play the loser of the Bartow/Gordon game Thursday at 8pm. The Bartow County 8-and-under coach pitch baseball team won its opening game at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association State Tournament Tuesday night over Rockmart, 20-10, in Calhoun. Bartow 8U took a 10-2 lead through four and one-half innings, but Rockmart scored eight times in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game 10-10. Bartow then rallied for a 10-run sixth inning to put the game away. Bartow 8U advances in the double-elimination tournament to play host Calhoun Wednesday at 5pm at Calhoun Park. Cartersville High School’s Anthony Seigler received major news on two fronts this week. The rising senior and Auburn commit has been selected by USA Baseball to the 40-man 18U National Team Trials roster. There were rumblings it might happen last week following the conclusion of The Opening Finals at Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. On Monday it became a reality. Harrison High School (Kennesaw, GA) dual-threat quarterback Justin Fields has slipped passed Cartersville High School (Cartersville, GA) pro-style quarterback Trevor Lawrence for the new No. 1 player ranking by 247Sports in the class of 2018. 247Sports writer Barton Simmons reports that performances at The Opening Finals and the national 7on7 circuit were the largest factors in the rankings shakeup, but the debate over the final No. 1 is ongoing. Lawrence, with 10,000 career passing yards and back-to-back Georgia Class 4A state titles has been the No. 1 player in the Class of 2018 since the rankings for his class were first released. The 6-6, 200-pound rising senior and Clemson commit has proven himself time and time again on the field not only at showcases but in pads on game nights. Fields arguably made his rapid rise to the top in camps this spring and summer. He has repeated multiple outstanding performances against elite competition and his 4.51, 40-yard dash speed has not even been a factor in showcases. His Harrison Hoyas team started fast last season, but stumbled when he missed the final three regular season games with an injury. Part of the intrigue with Fields may come from his current status of availability. He originally committed to Penn State, but has now retracted his commitment and has Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Penn State as his top suitors. 247Sports lists him with 40 total offers. A third player receiving notoriety as a challenger for the top player in the Class of 2018 is another Clemson commit, defensive end Xavier Thomas. The strong-side defensive end from Bradenton, Florida’s IMG Academy is 6-3, 263 and a consensus five-star recruit. 247Sports also listed five new players as Five-Stars in the Class of 2018. They include Patrick Surtain Jr. (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Justin Shorter (Monmouth Junction, NJ), Jordyn Adams (Cary, NC), Jamaree Salyer (Pace Academy, Atlanta, GA), Jeremy Ruckert (Lindenhurst, NY), and Talanoa Hufanga (Corvallis, OR). They join previous Five-Stars Amon-Ra St. Brown (Anaheim, CA), Zamir White (Laurinburg, NC), Micah Parsons (Harrisburg, PA), Thomas, Lawrence, and Fields. Charles Howell III, fresh off a playoff loss the week before on the PGA Tour, shot three, 1-under 69s and an even par 70 this week at The Greenbrier Classic to finish tied for 45th. He was one of three players affiliated with Scott Hamilton Golf Academy and/or Athletic Motion Golf to make the cut this past week in White Sulphur Springs, WV. Scott Stallings and Hudson Swafford were the other two SHGA/AMG players to play on the weekend. They both tied for 58th with even-par 72-hole totals. Seven other SHGA/AMG players missed the cut at The Greenbrier, including Chris Kirk, Ben Crane, Bobby Wyatt, Boo Weekley, Steven Bowditch, Matt Every, and Jason Bohn. Brooke Pancake of SHGA/AMG shot 6-under-par at the LPGA Tour's Thornberry Creek Classic in Wisconsin. Pancake tied for 63rd with rounds of 67-73-73-69.
