Cartersville Little League continues to host the Georgia Little League 9-11-year-old state tournament this week at Rudy York Field and Joe Frank Harris Field in Atco with games continuing through at least Friday night. Cartersville’s 9-11-year old team has its back to the wall after dropping its first game of the double-elimination tournament Saturday to Smyrna Blue Little League 13-3. Cartersville will look to bounce back Monday night in an elimination game against Peachtree City American Little League (1-1) of District 4 at 6pm. Peachtree City American lost its first game of the tournament to Northern (Columbus) 11-3, but survived an elimination game Sunday afternoon by defeating Chatham County 14-1. Two other teams — Athens and Hart County — also play an elimination game Monday night. Four teams remain unbeaten in the 9-11-year-old state tournament and they face off in games Monday night. Washington-Wilkes plays Smyrna Blue while Northern (Columbus) squares off with Warner Robins American West. The tournament continues through an initial championship game Friday night. An “if needed” game in the double-elimination event would be Saturday morning. Bartow County Little League Softball (10-12-year-olds) continues play in the Georgia Little League state softball tournament Monday night in Warner Robins. Bartow plays District 4 representative West Point Little League in an elimination game after falling in their tournament opener to Washington-Wilkes Saturday morning. The Bartow/West Point winner will play either Washington-Wilkes or Hart County in another elimination game Tuesday night. The Georgia Little League Softball tournament continues through Wednesday evening with an “if needed” game scheduled for Thursday night. Bartow County’s Senior Little League team was eliminated from contention at the Georgia Senior Little League state tournament in Demorest. Bartow suffered losses to Martinez-Evans and Athens in the double-elimination tournament. Martinez-Evans is the only unbeaten team remaining after an 8-7 win over Madison County Sunday afternoon. The tournament continues through Tuesday night with an “if needed” final game set for Thursday night. The Georgia Little League 10-12-year-old state and Georgia Junior Little League state tournaments begin Saturday, July 22 in Peachtree City and Athens, respectively. Cartersville Little League will represent District 1 in the 10-12-year-old state tournament. A pair of Bartow County Little League teams and a Cartersville Little League team all lost opening round games Saturday at their respective state tournaments. Bartow County Little League Softball fell to District 6 champion Washington-Wilkes 28-15 in their state tournament first round game in Warner Robins. Bartow will now face either West Point LL or Pioneer LL Monday night in an elimination game. At the Georgia Senior Little League State Tournament in Clarksville, Bartow County was blanked 20-0 by District 6 champion Martinez-Evans Senior Little League. Bartow plays Athens in an elimination game at the double-elimination tournament Sunday afternoon at 4pm. Athens fell Saturday to Madison County Little League, 18-2. Cartersville Little League’s 9-11-year-old team dropped a 13-3 decision to Smyrna Little League Saturday at Rudy York Field in Atco. Cartersville will try to stave off elimination Monday night against either Chatham County Little League or Peachtree City American Little League. Those two teams also lost Saturday and play one another Sunday afternoon in an elimination game. The Little League Softball State Tournament in Warner Robins is scheduled to continue through Wednesday night with a potential “if needed” game on Thursday. Former Cartersville High School and Georgia Tech shortstop Connor Justus is riding his best streak of the 2017 season at the plate for his Advanced Class A California League team, the Inland Empire 66ers. Heading into Sunday night’s home game with Rancho Cucamonga, Justus has hit safely in eight consecutive games and has a pair of two-hit games in that streak. Since July 1, he has gone 9-for-28, raised his batting average by 11 points, and doubled three times in games at Lake Elsinore and in home series with Stockton and Rancho Cucamonga. He has a .321 batting average for the month of July. Justus is a second-year pro who was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. After being drafted last summer, Justus hit .344 with 23 RBIs in 26 games at Rookie Level with Orem, Utah and quickly rose to the Angels’ Class A level team in Burlington, Iowa. There he hit .230 with a pair of home runs over 42 games and finished his initial year in professional baseball with a .276 mark and 32 RBIs. Following 2017 Spring Training, Justus was promoted again and assigned to the Advanced Class A 66ers of the California League. Defensively, the 22-year-old middle infielder has continued to show why he was a high-level draft choice. In 72 games (71 at shortstop, 1 game at second base) he has a .953 fielding percentage in 280 total chances. He has also been part of 38 double plays. It is at the plate where Justus' years started slowly. He had only four hits in his first 34 official at-bats. From that point, he has shown some offensive flashes of his rookie year and has bashed five homers, but has lacked the consistency he exhibited in the 2016 campaign at the previous levels. He has collected 42 walks in 2017 and as a result has kept his on-base percentage at .327. Inland Empire finished the first half standings in the California League South Division with a 30-40 record. The Lancaster JetHawks of the Colorado Rockies organization won the first-half division title. The league is now 17 games into the second half of the schedule and Inland Empire has a 9-8 mark. The 66ers currently trail Rancho Cucamonga of the Dodgers’ organization by one game.

Cartersville Little League will be hosting the 2017 9-11-year-old Georgia Little League Baseball Tournament starting this weekend at Rudy York Field and Joe Frank Harris Field in Atco. An “if necessary” game could possibly be played Saturday morning to determine the state champion. Set off the Fourth of July fireworks for Sam Howard of the Colorado Rockies organization. Howard had his best game since joining the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes Tuesday night with an eight-inning, ten strikeout performance that shutout the visiting Sacramento River Cats 2-0 at Isotopes Park. The former Cartersville High School and Georgia Southern southpaw is now 2-1 with the Isotopes and needed only 91 pitches to dominate his eight innings of work. He scattered three hits and did not issue a walk. Howard is now 3-5 with a 2.81 ERA in 14 starts split between Double-A Hartford of the Eastern League and Triple-A Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast League. He has pitched 73 and 2/3 innings with 66 strikeouts, a 1.00 WHIP, and a .210 batting average against. Howard was spectacular Tuesday evening in front of 15,664 fans. It was the fifth-largest crowd in Isotopes Park history and his 10 strikeouts matched his career-high. When Howard left the game in the middle of the eighth, the game was scoreless. Opposing pitcher Jose Flores also had an impressive outing, but Tom Murphy smashed a solo home run for Albuquerque in the bottom of the eighth and Daniel Castro added a sacrifice fly later in the frame to give the Isotopes a 2-0 lead. Reliever Jairo Diaz closed out the ninth for the home team to complete the shutout. The Isotopes are 41-43 following Tuesday night’s win and are in second place at 5.5 games behind Pacific Southern Division leading Salt Lake Bees of the Los Angeles Angels’ organization.

Atlanta Falcons linebacker Vic Beasley was one of several NFL elite pass rushers to attend a pass rush summit June 29 at Stanford University. This was more than just a collection of guys getting together for a workout. The miniature mini-camp hosted by the Denver Broncos Von Miller was an invitation only event and it included many of the league’s best. Among the NFL stars in attendance were defensive ends Cliff Avril and Cassius Marsh of Seattle. Also present were outside linebackers Khalil Mack (Oakland), Olivier Vernon (NY Giants), Arik Armstead (San Francisco), and Shane Ray (Denver). Dallas defensive end Damontre Moore participated as did Falcons' former All-Pro Chuck Smith, Jacksonville defensive lineman Malik Jackson, and 49ers defensive end Solomon Thomas. The attending players gathered to share their knowledge and to sharpen skills. The players at this elite level know that subtle changes they pick up and obtaining intricate expertise can be just enough to separate themselves from the remainder of players at their positions. Beasley (15.5) and Miller (13.5) were the top two NFL sack leaders in the 2016 season and talked about developing a summit last January. Last week, they made the gathering happen. Richard Smith, who coached Miller at Denver and was Beasley’s defensive coordinator in Atlanta, apparently helped solidify the link between the two pass rush stars. Smith has now moved on to the Los Angeles Chargers as a linebackers coach.

Is the No. 1 quarterback and top recruit status of Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence being challenged? Well if you ask around in Cartersville and Bartow County there is little question. Locals have witnessed the incredible performances of the Clemson commit for three years now as he has led the Hurricanes to a pair of state titles and a final four appearance with only one loss in three seasons. Early Tuesday, Luke Stampini of 247Sports ranked the top performances from The Opening Finals featuring twelve of the nation’s top high school quarterback prospects following head-to-head competition at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon that wrapped up Monday. The six-day event is arguably the most prestigious prep football showcase in the nation and included Cartersville rising senior quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence has held the nation’s top overall prospect spot and the No. 1 quarterback spot among high school players since the Class of 2018 rankings were established, but much of the media hype at The Opening Finals this past weekend focused on nearby Harrison Hoyas QB Justin Fields from Kennesaw, GA. Fields, who was committed to Penn State at one time but has since withdrawn that commitment, tossed 16 touchdowns in the 7on7 competition at The Opening Finals and did not throw an interception while connecting on 72 percent of his attempts. That type of performance against nationally elite competition earned him 247Sports top QB billing from the event. Fields is a dual-threat quarterback whose stock has risen in recent months. Most experts now list Florida State, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and Penn State as his potential landing spots. He currently has 40 total offers according to 247Sports. Fields won the Elite 11 MVP award and led his 7on7 team to The Opening 2017 championship, so last weekend’s performance in Beaverton will only fuel a growing debate about whether or not Lawrence will retain his No. 1 QB and prospect status. Fields also only threw from the pocket in the 7on7s in Oregon. His 4.51 speed was not utilized in this event as a runner. Do not be misled by the hype, however. Lawrence performed well in Oregon and was highly impressive. He continued to receive rave reviews for his ability to read through his progressions and throw for accuracy. He threw for six touchdowns and a 65 percent completion rate, but he was picked off four times in the 7on7s. In a different report Tuesday, Jeff Sentell of DawgNation took to the defense of Lawrence’s No. 1 position. He pointed out that Lawrence has handled the top spot with tremendous poise while winning back-to-back state titles and only dropping one game in his three-year high school career. Sentell further reminded his readers that those factors are key considerations in determining the overall No. 1 spot. In the big picture, it really doesn’t matter. It is like the common comparison debates of other great athletes. Lawrence is content in his selection of Clemson as his future home and Fields will land with one of the elite programs in the country. Who knows? Charles Howell III had a birdie try from just over 21 feet on the last hole of regulation play Sunday at the Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour. It was a putt for the tournament win, but the ball barely slipped by the left edge and left Howell in a playoff with Kyle Stanley. Stanley went on to win the tournament at TPC Potomac with a par on the first playoff hole leaving Howell, 38, with his second runner-up finish of 2017 and the 16th runner-up finish of his PGA Tour career. Howell finished second to Jon Rahm earlier this year in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego. The resulting solo second place finish was the top performance this past week for players affiliated with Cartersville Country Club's Scott Hamilton Golf Academy and Athletic Motion Golf. Howell, an Augusta, GA native now residing in Orlando, is one of the most consistent players on tour. This week marked his return to competitive play after a nine-week break due to a rib injury. Although he has gone nearly 300 tournament starts without a win, he remains just one of three golfers to finish in the top 125 on the PGA Tour money list since 2000. He won the Michelob Championship at Kingmill by two shots in 2002 and captured the 2007 Nissan Open when he edged Phil Mickelson in a playoff. Howell, a former NCAA national champion as an individual and with his team at Oklahoma State University (2000), won the Haskins Award honoring the most outstanding collegiate golfer and was PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 2001. Elsewhere on the senior PGA Champions Tour, SHGA-player Joe Durant continued his steady play and his rise in the season-long Schwab Cup standings. Georgia Highlands College softball has announced Karlie Jarrett Worley as its first full-time assistant coach in program history. Worley comes back to GHC from Berry College where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and secondary education while being a student-athlete and student-worker with the nationally ranked softball program. Off the field, Worley helped with scouting opponents and game day statistical analysis. On the field, Worley was a utility player for the Vikings with a career batting average of 0.350. On March 18th, Worley was named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week after batting 0.817 and slugging 1.143 against conference opponent Suwannee. No stranger to GHC Softball, Worley was a member of the Chargers inaugural softball program in 2012. A NJCAA 1st Team All-Region selection as a sophomore, Worley also graduated with honors earning an A.S. in Mathematics. On top of her efforts on and off the field, Worley worked 19 hours a week in the softball office helping with all facets of the softball program. Head Coach Melissa Wood states, "Cody and I are excited to have Karlie join our coaching staff. As alumni, she's familiar with our softball program and understands the hard work required to be successful at the JUCO level. Karlie will be able to hit the ground running and we look forward to her helping take our team to new heights." On top of her coaching duties at Highlands, Karlie plans to pursue a master’s degree in Math Education. Karlie lives in Summerville, Georgia with her husband Dillon and their two dogs Goose and Daisy.

Bartow County Little League 8-10-year-old B-Team won the Georgia District 1 Little League championship this past Wednesday by completing a two-game sweep of Rockmart Little League in their best-of-three series. BCLL won the first game 15-0 Tuesday night and secured the series Wednesday night with a 7-1 decision. Conner Lujan tossed a four-inning complete-game shutout Tuesday and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, triple, and three RBIs. In Wednesday’s series clincher, Kaiden Pirkle did not allow a run, struck out ten, and scattered only four hits in a five and one-third innings pitching performance for Bartow. Malachi Linley closed out the sixth inning for the locals. Lujan went 5-for-6 in the series with a homer, two triples, three stolen bases, and three RBIs to lead Bartow’s offense. Joshua McBroom was also 5-for-6 with a double and one RBI. Robert Mitchell added a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with a stolen base and one RBI. Righley Worthington went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for Bartow. Hunter Lovett finished the series 4-for-6 with a double and two RBIs. Cartersville High School rising senior quarterback and Clemson commit Trevor Lawrence is one of 166 high school players from across the country at The Opening Finals at Nike Headquarters this week making Beaverton, Oregon the center of the recruiting world these days. The Opening Finals is widely considered the premier high school football showcase. The event began Wednesday and will continue through Monday, July 3. Most of the players are Class of 2018 with a few Class of 2019 participants. The players participate in drills, training sessions, and competition. They will also compete in a 7-on-7 tournament, a quarterback competition, and a lineman challenge. Friday, Lawrence worked out with his 7-on-7 teammates -- Team Savage Pro. There are a total of five teams for the 7-on-7 tournament, including Team Vapor Speed, Team Untouchable, Team Mach Speed, Team Hyper Strong, Team Alpha Menace, and Team Savage Pro.
