Cartersville Little League’s 8/9-year-old Sandlot Baseball team will be one of three teams to open play at the Sandlot State Tournament in Warner Robins Saturday. The 7/8-year-old Rookie Level State Tournament and the Sandlot Level Tournament are both being hosted by Warner Robins American Little League and the Southeast Regional Complex in Warner Robins. The draw for round-robin play will take place Saturday morning, but the Rookie Level State Tournament will include Northeast Section champion Oconee County, Northwest Section champion Smyrna Blue, and South Section champion Warner Robins American East. The draw for round-robin play for the Sandlot Level State Tournament will also take place Saturday morning for Northeast Section champion Martinez-Evans, Northwest Section champion Cartersville, and South Section champion Warner Robins American West. The three round-robin games for each level will be held Saturday at 10 am, 12:30 pm, and 3 pm. The top two teams from round-robin play will play a single-elimination championship game on Sunday at 2:30 pm. Cartersville will be one of 30 top Georgia high school football teams competing Friday in the Corky Kell 7-on-7 Invitational at the Roswell Area Parks Football Complex in the city of Roswell. The Roswell complex has three new football fields, but games will also be played at Blessed Trinity on two fields, Roswell High School, and Fellowship Christian stadiums. Colquitt County is the two-time defending champions of this third annual event. Cartersville is assigned to Pod E along with Norcross, Houston County, Mountain View, and Cherokee. The pod will play its games on Field #2 at the Roswell Area Parks. The morning session begins at 9:30 am with each team playing four pool match-ups to determine seeding for Friday afternoon’s single-elimination tournament. Bill Hassell, head golf professional at Cartersville Country Club, shot a 3-under-par 69 Wednesday to finish tied for 33rd at the Yamaha Atlanta Open held at Echelon Golf Club in Alpharetta. Hassell finished with a 6-over-par 150 total for the 36-hole event that started Tuesday. Kennesaw State University junior Wyatt Larkin won the tournament with a 5-under-par total 139 after rounds of 69 and 71. Kyle Owen, a golf professional at Dunwoody Country Club, made a final round charge with a 68 on Wednesday but finished two shots behind Larkin. Amateurs Mike Heffner and Jake Kangas of Cartersville also competed in the Georgia PGA Section event. Heffner tied for 86th with rounds of 78-81 and Kangas finished 124th with rounds of 85-86. William Rawls, an amateur competing out of Barnsley Resort, shot a 74 Wednesday to finish in a tie for 99th at 161.

The 2017 U.S. Open begins play Thursday at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin and Cartersville Country Club’s Scott Hamilton Golf Academy has only one player in the field. 38-year-old Kyle Thompson of Greenville, South Carolina qualified at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland on Monday, June 5 with a 7-under-par 135 total for 36 holes. That placed him second in a field of 50 players, good for one of three spots available. Sam Ryder took medalist honors at the qualifier with Ben Kohles earning the third spot. Thompson, who played full-time on the PGA Tour in 2008 and 2012, has been on the WEB.com Tour (formerly Nationwide Tour) since turning pro in 2001. He has 54 career starts on the PGA Tour (26 events in ’08 / 22 events in ’12) with a pair of top-25 finishes and just over $199,000 in earnings. On the WEB.com Tour, the Panama City, Florida native has played in 280 career events with over $1.7 million in earnings. He currently ranks 7th on the WEB.com Tour money list in 2017 where a top-25 season finish earns a full-time PGA Tour card next season. Thompson categorizes himself as a patient and steady player — characteristics that not only paid off at the WEB.com’s first tour event this season, but will be valuable under the always tough U.S. Open conditions. In January high winds, he took a victory at the Sandals - Emerald Reef Course in the Bahamas firing three of four rounds under par despite seven double bogeys on his scorecard. Coach David Brock and the Cass High School basketball program will be hosting one of the largest high school basketball team camps in North Georgia this Friday and Saturday at the Colonels’ facilities in White. Twenty-eight teams (14 varsity / 14 junior varsity) will compete in camp-style games on three courts inside the Cass High School facility. The Cass High School main gym converts to two full sized courts with the bleachers retracted and the school has an adjacent auxillary gym with another full sized floor. “We have a solid field of teams coming in,” said Brock (photo right). “Half of the teams playing this weekend were in their respective state tournaments last season. There should be some really good competition.” Among the participating schools, Calhoun was in the Class AAA Final Four in 2017. Other state tournament qualifying teams include Villa Rica (AAAAA); Adairsville (AAA); Sonoraville (AAA); Lafayette (AAA); Coosa (AA); and Pepperell (AA). Cornerstone, Dalton, Gordon Central, Model, North Paulding, Woodland, and Cass are among the other participating teams. There will be two full days of competition. “We will begin games at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday with games continuing through 8 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday,” noted Brock. “Spectators are welcome. There is no admission fee and we will have a full concession stand in operation.” The camp also doubles as one of the 24 Georgia High School Association’s instruction camps for basketball game officials. Referees during the camp games will represent all parts of the state. The men and women in stripes will be working on their skills and receiving feedback from clinicians while the players and teams work on their games. “We have more than 65 officials coming to this camp from all parts of Georgia,” said Ronny Mulkey, training coordinator for Cherokee Basketball Officials Association headquartered out of Cartersville. “There will be at least ten different officiating associations represented.” Mulkey (photo above) added the attraction of the camp for officials is multi-faceted. “Doc Sisk runs the officials portion of the camp for GHSA. He and his wife Nan are among the most highly respected officials in the country,” Mulkey continued. “Both Dock and Nan have been Atlanta Tip-Off Club Naismith National Officials of the Year, so they bring their expertise plus they bring in about eight other NCAA Division I officials to help train these high school officials. It is a great opportunity for our officials,” said Mulkey. GHSA basketball officials are now required to participate in an off-season camp each year to officiate varsity games and the post-season, but Mulkey said that is only part of the reason this particular camp is so attractive to officials. Dock Sisk “The expertise in training our officials receive at this camp is outstanding,” added Mulkey. “The officials get their GHSA credit for participating, but they also have an opportunity to learn from some of the best officials out there at the D-I level. Dock is also the post-season assignor for our part of the state.”

With the departure of head coach Stuart Chester a few weeks ago, the Cartersville High School baseball program is in the process of selecting a new skipper. Cartersville High School principal, Dr. Marc Feuerbach responded Tuesday to several questions regarding the hiring process for the Canes' new coach. Chester, 52, spent 21 seasons at Cartersville High School and won six state baseball championships. His career coaching record is 563-148 with 532 of those wins coming at Cartersville. His teams won state titles in 2001, ’02, ’03, ’08, ’09, and 2013 while also amassing 14 region titles, 17 state quarterfinal appearances, 10 semifinal appearances, and eight appearances in the state finals. He was an assistant coach one season for the Canes before taking the head coaching reins in 1997. Chester was inducted into the Georgia Dugout Club’s Hall of Fame in 2014.

Final results for Scott Hamilton Golf Academy players for tour events ending last Sunday, June 11. Ben Crane was the top SHGA player on the PGA Tour this past week with a 6-under-par tie for 10th at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis. He was tied for the lead through three rounds, but slid down the leaderboard a bit on Sunday with a 3-over-par final round. Matt Every of SHGA was tied for the lead after Thursday's opening round and slipped off the pace in the middle rounds before a rally again on Sunday with a 3-under-par final round to tie for 27th overall. Scott Stallings and Chris Kirk made the 36-hole cut although Kirk did not qualify for Sunday's round. Daniel Berger won the event for the second straight year. Five-star Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence continued to collect national accolades this past weekend as he earned the quarterback MVP award at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge conducted at the Indianapolis Colts Practice Facility in Indianapolis, IN Friday and Saturday. In three seasons as the Cartersville High School quarterback, Lawrence has amassed 10,597 passing yards. He is 656 of 1046 for 120 touchdowns and has thrown only 20 interceptions. He threw for 3,900 yards and 51 touchdowns last season as the Hurricanes won their second consecutive Class 4A State Championship and completed back-to-back 15-0 seasons. The Cartersville Little League 8-9-year-old Sandlot Division baseball team used three different three-run innings Thursday night on their way to a 10-2 win over Smyrna Little League Blue in the Georgia Little League Northwest Georgia Sectional championship game. Cartersville, hosting the Northwest Section tournament at Joe Frank Harris Field in Atco, took a 4-1 lead after two innings and then added three runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning. Smyrna only managed single runs in the first and fifth frames. Logan Buchanan (2.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 5BB, 3K) and Will Camp (3.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K) took care of business on the mound for Cartersville and combined on a four-hitter without allowing an earned run. Harris Turner and Camp had two hits and one RBI each at the top of Cartersville’s order. One of Turner’s hits was a double, he scored three runs and stole a base. Camp swiped two bases and scored one run. Kamdyn Woods added a triple and two RBIs. Griffin Woodall had one hit, one RBI, and scored a run. Sydney Seigler also contributed a hit and scored a pair of runs. Buchanan scored one run and drove in two. Asa Mitcham reached base in all four at-bats with walks, stole two bases, and scored twice. CARTERSVILLE LITTLE LEAGUE ROOKIE TEAM FALLS IN SECTION SEMIFINALS The Cartersville Little League 7-8-year-old Rookie Division team went 2-0 in pool play to reach the single-elimination semifinals of bracket play at the Georgia Little League Northwest Section Tournament in Smyrna, but was eliminated Thursday night by Rockmart Little League, 13-3. Cartersville, who had pool play wins last Saturday and Tuesday over Peachtree City and Smyrna Red, fell behind in the second and third innings when Rockmart posted eleven runs. Cartersville led 2-1 after one inning, but Rockmart scored five runs in the second and six more in the third to take a 12-2 lead. Cartersville added one more run in the third inning and Rockmart added another run in the fifth. Carter Callan (1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 3K), Cash Priest (0.2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 1H, 3BB), Dawson Ray (1.1 IP, 6R, 3ER, 2H, 3BB, 2K), and Weston Barfield (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 2BB, 6K) each took the mound for Cartersville in the loss. Cartersville scored their three runs without a hit. Priest scored twice after a pair of walks. He stole four bases. Barfield scored the other Cartersville run and had a walk and a stolen base. The City of Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Wire2Wire Running Camp June 12-14 at the Dellinger Park track. The camp is open to all runners ages 10 and up. Daily sessions include fundamentals of both cross country and track and field. There is a daily workout as well. Beginner level instruction will be given on the technical aspects of track and field events as well as key training attributes that all aspiring young runners need to know. The camp will be led by Wire2Wire Running’s Coach David Matherne and Coach Matt Tery. The two instructors have over 40 years of cross country and track and field experience collectively and both are former NCAA Division I runners. The camp will also present guest instructors and speakers. Katie Block, who played on the University of North Georgia NCAA D-II National Championship team in 2015 as a third baseman, has been named the new high school head softball coach at Excel Christian Academy. Block comes to the Lady Eagles’ program and ECA from Parkview High School where she played her high school softball and began her teaching and coaching career in 2016. “Katie is a true blessing for Excel Christian Academy! The timing of her arrival into this area of northwest Georgia is impeccable. Only God’s hand could have brought her to us. Katie is a perfect fit for our school, our students, and our mission to provide a Christ-centered education for our families.” stated school President, Danny Deems. Block takes over a program that was 10-15 in 2016 and lost to Darlington in the opening round of the GHSA Class A Private state playoffs.
