The Adairsville Lady Tigers’ soccer team will make a second straight state quarterfinals appearance this coming Friday following a 1-0 victory Tuesday at Long County. Adairsville and the host Blue Tide battled scoreless until the Tigers' Gillian Johnson found the net off an assist from Katie Lawhorn in the game’s 78th minute. The loss ends Long County’s season with a 9-8 mark. The Blue Tide was the runner-up in Region 2-AAA. Adairsville (14-4) is a 4-seed from Region 6-AAA and will now play at either Lovett or Worth County in the Elite Eight on Friday.

Positive Athlete Georgia recently recognized its 2016-17 Northwest Atlanta Region winners with four athletes from local high schools included. “Positive Athlete Georgia” is a movement by high-character professional athletes tied to Georgia professional and collegiate sports teams to promote the benefits of “positivity” in young athletes. These athletes believe it is crucial to begin shaping the futures of young athletes for life skills beyond athletic competition and to learn how to give back to their community. Current and former professional athletes are members of this organization, and high school athletes are nominated by a coach, school administrator, parent or fan for the annual Georgia Positive High School Athlete Awards. “Positive Athletes of the Game” is a way to emphasize the importance of having a positive attitude. Georgia Highlands’ pitcher Jake Lovvorn tossed a shutout and allowed only three hits in a 10-0 GCAA win over West Georgia Tech at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson. John White drove in four runs in a 2-for-4 performance. He homered in the third inning and doubled in the fourth. Brandon Bell homered in the sixth inning and also had two doubles and a pair of RBIs. After a scoreless first inning, the Chargers scored at least one run in every other frame. Nick Fink had two hits and one RBI and Grant Bodison had two hits. Caleb McElwaney tripled and drove in a run. Devin Bilardello had one hit and one RBI and Bronco O’Brien added a single in the Chargers’ 12-hit attack. Georgia Highlands (35-18, 12-9 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) concludes the four-game series with West Georgia Tech Friday and Saturday in Carrollton. Friday’s single game is a 1:05 start. Saturday’s doubleheader also begins at 1:05pm.

In thirteen short months, Woodland Middle School student Spencer Fleming has risen quickly through the BMX ranks at the state, district, and national levels and has successfully moved from the novice to intermediate level. The sixth grader is currently one national win away from moving to the expert level, which would accomplish his highest possible level prior to his sixteenth birthday when he becomes eligible to compete for expert level. Spencer, the son of Todd and Belinda Fleming, is currently first in the 12-year-old USA BMX Gold Cup Intermediate standings, ninth among national age group intermediates, 58th nationally and 9th in his district in the cruiser ranks. He is the top 12-year-old intermediate in Georgia and second state cruiser. Fleming, who also plays soccer for Woodland Middle School, followed his father into BMX. His dad was a national champion as a youngster. Fleming will compete in Nashville this weekend; in a Gold Cup race in Morristown, TN May 13-14; and in the Music City Nationals May 26-28. His goal for the year is to finish as a national age group top ten. He will also compete in the Race of Champions and The Grand season-ending Championship in Tulsa, OK in November.

The Cartersville boys tennis team lost at North Oconee Monday in the GHSA Class AAAA state semifinals, 3-0. The Canes, who were the Region 5-AAAA runner-up, had state tournament wins over Chestatee, Cairo, and Oconee County to reach the Final Four. Although disappointed to not make the championship match, the Hurricanes return every player in their regular lineup next season. Cartersville was led this season by singles players Will Allen, Matthew Slocum, and Ross Norwood. The Canes' doubles teams were Juan Zazueta/Ivy Nelson and Davis Edwards/Griffin Shaw. Cartersville finished the season with a 13-8 record. North Oconee will play Marist for the Class AAAA state championship Saturday at Clayton County International Park.

Collegiate schedules are completed or winding down for many locals in softball and baseball, but the minor league baseball seasons for Sam Howard and Connor Justus are early in 2017. Former Canes pitcher and now Auburn Tigers freshman left-hander, Elliott Anderson, had possibly the most significant appearance of his young career this past weekend against SEC-rival Mississippi State, while the local players on the Reinhardt University softball team captured another AAC title and are headed to the NAIA national tournament. This week’s Athletes Beyond Bartow update also includes news for collegiate track and field and the conclusion of the 2017 season for Peyton Gollhofer and the Ball State University women’s tennis team. MiLB SAM HOWARD — Hartford Yard Goats (Double-A, Eastern League; Colorado Rockies organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS). . . In his third start of the year and second with Hartford, Howard went four innings and allowed two runs on two hits and a pair of walks in a 2-1 home loss to Richmond. For the season, he is 0-1 in three games and has worked 10.2 innings. He has eight strikeouts and a 2.53 ERA. Hartford is 8-12 and five games back of the Trenton Thunder (NYY) in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League. CONNOR JUSTUS — Inland Empire 66ers (Class A Advanced, California League; LA Angels organization; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS). . . Justus has endured a slow start at the plate with the 66ers through their first 20 games batting normally in the six or seven slot of the order. In 73 at bats he has a .164 batting average with six RBIs, but has drawn a dozen walks for a .291 on base average. He has a .955 fielding percentage in 82 total chances and has been part of 18 double plays. The 66ers are 10-14 and currently 4 games back of Rancho Cucamonga (LAD) in the South Division of the California League. COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Freshman, LHP, Cartersville HS). . . picked up a win with two and one-third innings of relief Saturday as 5th-ranked Auburn won 5-3 at 7th-ranked Mississippi State. He entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, but induced a ground ball double play to enable the Tigers to escape the inning with out a run. Over the next inning and one-third, Anderson allowed one earned run on four hits. He struck out one. He also worked an inning and two-thirds last Tuesday in a 5-2 home loss to Troy where he did not allow a run on two hits and struck out two. Anderson now has eight appearances for 8.2 innings with an 8.31 ERA and seven strikeouts. Auburn (32-14, 14-7 SEC) hosts a three-game series with Alabama Friday through Sunday. CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Freshman, OF, Cartersville HS). . . He was 0-for-4 in a 10-4 home win over Claflin last Tuesday and went 1-for-8 as the Jaguars split a two-game weekend series at Columbus State. Evans finished the season with a .301 batting average that included two homers, five extra-base hits, and 13 RBIs in 103 at bats across 30 games and 23 starts in the outfield. He made no errors defensively during the year. Augusta finished the year 21-25 overall and 10-14 in the Peach Belt Conference. The Jags finished in a tie for eighth and did not qualify for the PBC post season tournament. TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Senior, RHP, Cartersville HS). . . pitched three innings of relief last Tuesday and was tagged with the pitching loss in a 6-2 home loss to 20th-ranked University of the Cumberlands (KY). Fowler gave up a four hits, including a home run and a pair of earned runs. For the season he has made eight appearances with 12.1 innings pitched and a 2.45 ERA. 6th-ranked TWC (35-18, 20-7 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays in the AAC Championship Tournament that begins this Wednesday in Kingsport, TN MICHAEL GOSS — UNC-Greensboro (Senior, 1B, Cartersville HS). . . hit his fifth home run of the season Sunday to cap a 3-for-14 weekend as the Spartans won two-of-three games at Mercer in the Southern Conference. Gollhofer was 14-4 in doubles matches this season playing usually at Line 1 or Line 2. She was also 11-7 in singles matches playing all her matches on Line 1 or 2. Ball State finished the year with a 20-3 mark.

The Cass boys soccer team, who qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in over a decade, fell to 2nd-ranked Clarkston Friday night in 2017 Class AAAAA state playoffs, 5-0. The Colonels played a strong first half and got several key saves from goal keeper Brandon Romero to take a 0-0 score to the intermission, but the Angorras broke the ice in the game’s 56th minute and added four more tallies across the next thirteen minutes to take a 5-0 lead with just over eight minutes to play. Cass finished the year 5-11. Clarkston will host Starr’s Mill in the second round of the playoffs next Wednesday. Starr’s Mill routed Warner Robins 11-1 in the first round Friday night.

The Braves, Crackers, and Indians continue a tight race in the Cartersville Little League (major) standings, while it is the Orioles, Athletics, and the Braves leading the way in the Bartow County Little League (major) standings. Blessed Trinity starting pitchers Peyton Glavine and Patrick McNamara limited Cartersville to a single run and only eight hits in a doubleheader Friday night in Roswell to eliminate the Canes in the first round of the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs. Blessed Trinity won 4-1 and 9-0 in the two-game sweep. GAME 1 Devin Warner hit a solo home run for Cartersville in the top of the first off Blessed Trinity starting pitcher Peyton Glavine, but the Titans’ senior scattered only four more Canes’ hits and struck out eight in a series opening 4-1 Blessed Trinity win Friday afternoon in Roswell. Blessed Trinity went up 1-0 in the best-of-three series that continued with a second game Friday evening. The Titans scored all four of their runs in the bottom of the third off Cartersville starter Anthony Seigler. David Dunn hit the first of his two triples and scored to tie the game 1-1 on a fielder’s choice grounder to the pitcher. Colin Davis doubled into center field to advance Ryan Davis to third base. A wild pitch allowed a run to score and Colin Davis advanced to third base. After Jake Lundkovsky and Cole McNamee walked, Seigler was removed for reliever Mason Barnett. Barnett got the second out of the inning on a sacrifice fly out by Jake Smith for the Titans’ fourth run and got his next man on a groundout, but Blessed Trinity held a 4-1 advantage. Glavine, son of MLB Hall of Famer Tom Glavine, handled the rest himself. The Titans’ lefty tossed a complete-game in 107 pitches. After Warner’s first inning homer, Glavine yielded just three singles to Seigler, Jake Gooch, and Jordan Wilkie plus a fourth inning double by J.P. Martin. Anthony Seigler (2.1 IP, 4ER, 3H, 4BB, 1K) started on the mound for Cartersville and was saddled with the defeat. Mason Barnett (3.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 1K) finished the game on the mound for the Hurricanes. Dunn and Davis had two hits each for Blessed Trinity. Mitchell Weidner had the other Titans’ base hit.
