The Georgia Highlands Chargers let an 8-1 lead get away Thursday night in a 9-8 loss to Gordon State College at LakePoint. The Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association game was the second in this week’s four-game series between the two teams. The Chargers posted three runs in the third and three more in the fourth inning for an early lead. Nick Fink, Devin Bilardello, and John White each had RBI doubles in the third. Nick Piccapietra and Bronco O’Brien had RBI hits in the fourth inning and Bilardello added a sacrifice fly for a 6-1 Chargers’ lead. GHC’s Matt Vaccaro banged a solo homer in the fifth and Grant Bodison doubled and later scored on a Stallions’ error to give the Chargers an 8-1 lead after six innings. Gordon College narrowed the lead with a three run homer in the top of the seventh by Blake Bottomley and cut the lead to 8-5 with an unearned run in the top of the eighth. The Stallions tied the game 8-8 in the top of the ninth with a Chase Sudduth three-run homer and then took a 9-8 lead on a walk and back-to-back singles. Georgia Highlands utilized five pitchers in their loss. Chargers’ starting pitcher Matthew Norton (6 IP, 1ER, 6H, 3BB, 6K) threw six solid innings, but finished with a no-decision. Sam Sowerbrower (0.1 IP, 3R, 2ER, 1H, 1BB) and Jeremiah Woods (1.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 2K) worked in middle relief. Britt Buckelew (0.0 IP, 4ER, 2H, 2BB) entered in the ninth and yielded a game-tying homer and another single that saddled him with the loss. Bradley Hood followed and allowed back-to-back hits that scored an inherited runner, but Hood (1 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 2K) then recorded back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to end the top of the ninth. Parker McBroom (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 0BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Gordon State in relief of Spencer Douches (5 IP, 7ER, 10H, 0BB, 5K). Ryan Wesley worked a spotless bottom of the ninth to earn a save. Both teams finished with eleven hits. Bottomley led the Stallions with three hits including his homer. Piccapietra, Bodison, and Brandon Bell each had two hits for the Chargers. Gordon State (12-32, 8-10) has now won the first two games of this series that concludes Saturday with a doubleheader. Georgia Highlands falls to 32-18 overall and 9-9 in the GCAA.

The son of Eric and Angie Cornett, Avery is also the 2017 Mr. CHS, a Beta Club member, and a member of the National Honor Society. Cornett’s leadership and hard work helped lead the Colonels to a trip to the Class AAAAA Sweet Sixteen this season. He is committed to play his future tennis at Berry College. Megan Smith is the Adairsville High School Elite Athlete of the Month for April. Smith is a member of the swim and volleyball teams, as well as the Line 3 singles player for the Lady Tigers’ tennis team. The daughter of Missy Bagwell and Scott Smith, she finished 4-2 in region tennis matches in her freshman season and capped the year with a win against Murray County in the region tournament. Smith has a 4.0 grade point average and is a member of the mock trial team. The April Elite Athlete of the Month representing Woodland High School is Karson Norris. A junior on the Lady Cats’ track and field team, Norris competed this season in the 100M Hurdles, 300M Hurdles, Pole Vault, and was on the 400M Relay Team. The daughter of Brandy Forstie, Roger Forstie, and Bryan Norris, she won Bartow County Championship titles in both hurdles events and pole vault. She also won the Region 7-AAAAA championship in the pole vault. “Karson has put a massive offseason effort in this last year and her accomplishments this season speak for themselves. We are looking forward to seeing her progress going into her senior year,” said Lady Cats’ coach Matthew Landolt Matthew Slocum is the April Elite Athlete of the Month for Cartersville High School. Slocum is a junior and the son of Drs. Beth and Terry Slocum. Playing the Line 2 singles position on the Hurricanes’ tennis team, Slocum has compiled a 15-2 season record this Spring. “Matthew is a leader both academically and athletically,” said Cartersville tennis coach Melissa Moore. “He is supportive of his teammates and gives 100 percent at every turn. He’s a pleasure to teach and coach and he is always striving to do his best. In my opinion, he is a true leader and an uplifting young man.” Slocum is an AP scholar and leader on the academic and robotics teams. He was named to the Region 5-AAAA academic all-star team.​ ​ The April Elite Athlete of the Month for Excel Christian Academy is Kyree Tucker. He is the son of Kelly and Andre Tucker and is a senior at ECA. He is a multisport athlete for the Eagles where his is a member of the basketball, cross country, and soccer teams. “Kyree always goes out of his way to help others,” said coach Kenn Baker. “He is a positive influence on the young students at Excel. He has spent countless hours working with younger players and athletes in our program. He is dependable, well-mannered, respectful, and is a credit to his parents and the school,” Baker continued. Tucker was a standout player for the Excel basketball team despite a difficult season. He was recognized by the Northwest Georgia Tip-Off Club as the Player of the Year for the Eagles. His favorite subject is History. Tucker says he finds it intriguing and interesting, plus he enjoys the class discussions and information sessions that take place in class. His hobbies include hanging out with friends, playing basketball, attending church, and spending time with his family. Tucker is a member of the Church at Liberty Square where he is an active participant in youth activities. His future plans include attending college and pursuing a major in sports broadcasting. Nine Georgia Highlands College softball players were named to the 2017 All-Region XVII Softball Team Wednesday night prior to the GCAA Championship Tournament that begins Thursday at Georgia Military College. Andria Booth (photo below) was named the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year. Teammates Micayla McCoy, Rebecca Meade, Shayla Smith, Shay Wooten, Hannah Wills, Carlee Thurmond, Madison Gianfala, and Brianna Fickes were named to the All-Region team. Third-seeded Georgia Highlands (42-14, 19-9) plays 6th-seeded Gordon State College to open tournament play Thursday at 1pm. The winner will play again at 5pm against the host and 2nd-seed, Georgia Military College. Losers’ bracket games begin Friday afternoon with the tournament playing its way down to the final three teams. The semifinal game from the losers’ bracket and the championship round will be played Saturday. The tournament winner advances to the NJCAA College World Series at Canyons Complex in St. George, Utah.

The Cartersville boys tennis team trailed 0-2 early, but rallied to beat Oconee County 3-2 and advance to the Class AAAA Final Four Wednesday evening. Come-from-behind wins by Matthew Slocum at Line 2 singles and the Line 2 doubles team of Davis Edwards and Griffin Shaw sparked the victory. Will Allen — at Line 1 singles — also pulled out a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win. The Canes (13-7) will now face North Oconee in the state semifinals in Watkinsville. The match is required to be completed by next Tuesday. The winner moves to the Class AAAA state championship match to be played at International Park in Clayton County on May 6. The Cartersville girls were not as fortunate Wednesday in their state quarterfinals match. The Lady Canes fell to Woodward Academy, 3-2. Woodward advances to play either St. Pius or Blessed Trinity in the state semifinals. Kenly King and Ansley Thompson picked up the two Lady Canes’ points with wins at the second and third singles lines. The Cartersville girls season comes to a close with a 16-3 record. Pedro Ghanem and Pedro Robledo scored goals for Cartersville as the Hurricanes defeated White County in the opening round of the Class AAAA state soccer playoffs Wednesday evening. Host Cartersville, 5-AAAA region champs, scored both goals in the second half. White County was the No. 4 seed from Region 7-AAAA. Ghanem gave Cartersville a 1-0 lead in the game’s 47th minute. His header found the net off a feed from Robledo. Robledo’s goal came off an assist by Victor Guevara for the Hurricanes' 2-0 advantage. White County’s season ends with a 6-8-3 mark. Cartersville (15-1-2) advances to the Round of 16 where the Canes will host the 3rd-seed from Region 1-AAAA, Shaw, next Wednesday. The Raiders (10-4) blanked Baldwin in the first round, 6-0.

Georgia Highlands lost the first game of a four-game Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association series Tuesday night to Gordon State College in Barnesville, 11-5. The Chargers, currently tied for third in the GCAA, will host the final three games of the series Friday and Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson. GHC took a 5-0 lead after the top of fourth inning, but the game’s momentum turned from there. The Chargers scored a run without a base hit in the second inning on a hit batsman, a walk, a fielder’s choice, and a ground out RBI by Bronco O’Brien. In the third, Grant Bodison drove in one run with a line drive single and a second run scored on a passed ball. In the fifth, the Chargers went up 5-0 on an RBI double by John White that scored O’Brien and an RBI single by Matt Vaccaro. A pair of Gordon College two-run home runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings narrowed the margin to 5-4 and the Highlanders took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles and a double. The floodgates opened in the bottom of the eighth as Gordon scored five times with help from the Chargers. Four walks (one intentional), a wild pitch, a two-run double, a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly enabled the five runs on only one hit in the inning. Britt Buckelew (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB) was saddled with the pitching loss in relief of starter Jake Lovvorn (5 IP, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K) and Sam Sowerbrower (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB). Ryan Bramlett (0.0 IP, 2ER, 0H, 2BB) failed to retire a batter in the eighth. Kyle Brady (0.1 IP, 2ER, 2BB, 1K) and Peyton Tennant (0.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 0BB) also pitched in the eighth. O’Brien (RBI), White (double, RBI), and Vaccaro (double, RBI) had two hits each for the Chargers. Bodison (RBI), Nick Fink, and Devin Bilardello had the other GHC hits. Georgia Highlands is now 32-17 overall and 9-8 in the GCAA. The Chargers trail conference leader East Georgia (14-7 GCAA) and second place ABAC (11-9 GCAA) with seven games remaining on their conference schedule. With their win, Gordon College improved to 11-32 overall and 7-10 in the GCAA.

The Cass Colonels boys tennis team lost in the second round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs Tuesday to Harris County, 3-2. The match was played on clay at Callaway Gardens. The match was very closely contested with four of the five matches decided by narrow margins. SINGLES Line 1 — Avery Cornett won 6-4, 7-5 Line 2 — Dalton Jackson won 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 Line 3 — Seth Colston lost 1-6, 1-6 DOUBLES Line 1 — Cade Foster / Reagan Barrere lost 6-7, 6-7 Line 2 — Max McCauley / Kendall Arnold lost 6-3, 6-7, 4-6 “I’m proud of our guys for the way we played,” said Cass head coach Kevin Cunningham. “We came up just short against a really good team. We had our chances.” The Colonels completed the 2017 season with a 15-3 record. Their only losses were to Harris County and region 7-AAAAA champ Carrollton.

The Adairsville girls soccer team pulled off a big upset Tuesday night in the Class AAA state playoffs, knocking off Region 8-AAA champion and 6th-ranked Jackson County in double-overtime, 1-0. With the victory, the Lady Tigers have reached the second round of the state playoffs for a third consecutive season. Emily Collum, Adairsville’s leading scorer all year, found the back of the net with 1:30 remaining in the second overtime off an assist from Chloe Cochran. Adairsville defenders, led by Mac Stephenson, Macy Hufstetler, Ansley Leker and Katie Lawhorn kept Jackson County off the scoreboard all evening and keeper Havyn Isaac made 10 saves — including a crucial play late in regulation on a breakaway. The Lady Tigers (13-4) will be on the road again for the second round next Tuesday, May 2 to face either Long County (8-7) or Jackson (6-7). Those two teams are scheduled to play Wednesday at 5pm.

Ball State tennis sophomore, Peyton Gollhofer, helped lead the Lady Cards to the MAC regular season title last week to highlight this week’s Athletes Beyond Bartow update. In professional baseball, Connor Justus had four hits and scored three runs in six games with the Class-A Advanced Inland Empire. The 66ers shortstop has started slowly at the plate this season, but has raised his batting average 60 points over the past ten games. Inland Empire is currently 7-11 and in second place in the California League’s South Division. Sam Howard was re-assigned to the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats after one start with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. Howard pitched four shutout innings in his start Saturday with Hartford. He allowed two hits, a walk, and struck out three. Hartford is 7-10 to begin the 2017 season and currently 3 games back in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League. BASEBALL BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Junior, OF, Cass HS). . . went 2-for-9 at the plate with a pair of walks and one hit by pitch in a three-game series with top-ranked Mount Olive. The Saints were swept in that series by the conference regular season champs. The Saints (22-25, 10-17) did not qualify for the Conference Carolinas championship tournament, thus ending their season. Etheridge hit .281 for the season with 14 RBIs and 24 runs scored. He also pitched 7 innings in three games with a 1-0 record and a 5.14 ERA. CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Freshman, OF, Cartersville HS). . . was 7-for-19 with a walk, a double, a triple, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs in four games last week. Augusta won at Valdosta State and won two of three with Lander. Evans has a .313 batting average with two homers and 13 RBIs. Augusta (19-24, 10-14) failed to qualify for the post season Peach Belt Conference tournament, but will host Claflin Wednesday and play non-conference games at Columbus State Friday and Saturday. MICHAEL GOSS — UNC-Greensboro (Senior, 1B, Cartersville HS). . . was 5-for-16 with four RBIS and a run scored as the Spartans lost to High Point mid-week but took two out of three at Ohio State last weekend. Goss carries a .350 batting average with four homers and 34 RBIs. UNCG (24-15, 8-4) has a three-game Southern Conference series at Mercer Friday through Sunday. BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands College (Sophomore, RHP, Cass HS). . . tossed a pair of spotless innings last week as the Chargers split four games with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Hood has now pitched 11 innings on the year, allowing just two runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts.
