The current President of the Georgia High School Association's Executive Committee, Dr. Glenn White, responded Monday afternoon to the actions taken by the organization earlier in the day. Earnestine Young-Jones of WBHF Radio, interviewed Dr. White by phone. The questions and answers are transcribed below: Since Executive Director Gary Phillips will be resigning at the end of the current school year, where will the Georgia High School Association go from here? WHITE: Let me clarify. Mr. Phillips will retire at the end of this school year. The GHSA is going to buy out his contract which includes the 2017-18 school year. As far as how we proceed from here, the GHSA Board of Trustees will come together and decide how we are going to do that. We will conduct interviews and consider the recommendation of the Board of Trustees. The new Executive Director must also be approved by the full Executive Committee of the GHSA. Was the GHSA familiar with the concerns raised by the legislation presented? WHITE: We are aware that there have been concerns and complaints in the past, but that happens with any organization that serves the public. I think there are things we can address in that legislation that can improve the Georgia High School Association. It’s just a matter of us all working together to make that happen. Do you see a positive future for GHSA? WHITE: Yes. I think we need to keep in mind what this organization is all about. The GHSA was created to provide extra-curricular activities for students in the state of Georgia. That needs to guide every decision we make. Students should be placed first in what is best for them. If we will all come together and recognize that and work with each other to make that happen, the GHSA will be in great shape in the future. The GHSA Executive Committee, the General Assembly, our principals, athletic directors, school boards, and superintendents must work toward the benefit of our students. That’s what we have to do. State senator Bruce Thompson has called for other changes in the GHSA. Do you see the GHSA considering other changes? WHITE: Yes. I speak for myself, not the entire committee, but we need to look at all those things and have a fully cooperative atmosphere with the state legislature. We need to work together with them to make things better for our students. The GHSA represents all public high schools in Georgia and those private schools choosing to be members of the organization. We have a long history of providing activities for students and schools. I’m asking for the support of all students, parents, school administrators, athletic directors and coaches to help us make the organization great for our students.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL SYDNEY BOYD — Brewton-Parker College (Sophomore, G, Woodland HS). . . scored two points and had two assists as the Lady Barons were knocked out of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament in Montgomery by Middle Georgia State, 65-50. The opening round loss ended Brewton-Parker’s season with a 9-16 record. Boyd averaged 4.25 points and 2.30 rebounds in 20 games played. She also had 10 assists and 11 steals. A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Junior, PG/SG, Cartersville HS). . . scored five points at Texas Southern and 19 points at Prairie View last Thursday and Saturday as the Braves lost a pair of conference road games. Reinhardt (22-9) is a 7-seed and faces 7th-ranked and 2nd-seeded Indiana University East (26-7) in the first round. Tobin has appeared in 25 games, starting 14 for the Eagles. He is averaging 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Washington went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and scored three runs as a starter in left field. He now has a .370 batting average in six starts and 11 game appearances. MLB Fourth year pro and Cartersville native, Sam Howard, tossed another pair of shutout innings last Saturday for the MLB Colorado Rockies in a Cactus League, spring training, 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners. Howard, a non-roster invitee to the major league Rockies spring training camp, made his second appearance in relief for Colorado this spring. He had a previous two inning outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last Saturday, Howard pitched the 5th and 6th innings against the Mariners. In the fifth, he got a fly out from Tyler O’Neil, a line out to left field from Tyler Smith, and struck out Leonys Martin. In the sixth inning, Howard got Jean Segura to ground out to third. Robinson Cano popped up to the shortstop, and he struck out Nelson Cruz. In the two appearances combined this spring, the former Cartersville Hurricane has pitched four innings, allowed only one hit, no walks, and has struck out three. Opponents have a batting average against him of .077. Colorado is 5-4 in Cactus League games this spring. Seattle improved to 6-2. The Georgia High School Association Executive Committee approved a proposal Monday to allow current executive director Gary Phillips to retire at the end of the current school year and pay his contract and benefits through the 2017-18 school year. The committee originally denied the proposal, but after hearing from Phillips, a new proposal was made by the Executive Committee. Phillips urged the Executive Committee to allow his retirement to salvage the GHSA. At that point, a similar proposal to set up his retirement was approved unanimously. The General Assembly has started legislation in both the House and Senate to establish an alternative to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). Rep. John Meadows, R-Calhoun, introduced House Bill 415, and state Sen. Bruce Thompson, R-Cartersville, initiated Senate Bill 203. The two bills were almost identical and basically called for the abolishment of the GHSA and establishment of a new governing organization. Both chambers had previously indicated they would stop progress of the legislation if certain actions were taken by GHSA. The removal of Phillips (photo right) as Executive Director was one of those steps. The GHSA Board of Trustees must now meet in coming days to make a decision on the next steps for the high school governing sports organization.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes baseball team will participate this weekend in the 5th annual Perfect Game High School Showdown held at LakePoint Sports in Emerson. The event, which started in Ft. Myers, FL at Jet Blue Park in 2013 moved to the local Georgia location with the Perfect Game organization for the 2015 tournament. Twenty-five teams will begin play Thursday in the single-elimination championship bracket with some winners playing a second game Thursday night to narrow the title bracket to eight unbeaten teams heading into Friday night’s quarterfinals. Cartersville (7-1) will open play Thursday evening on Field #12 at 6pm against James Clemens High School (Madison, AL). The winner of that game will advance to a Round of 16 game Friday afternoon at 3:30pm against Providence High School (Jacksonville, FL). The championship bracket quarterfinals are Friday night at 6pm on four different fields with the semifinals Saturday morning at 10:30am and finals at 1pm on Saturday. Weather permitting, all teams in the tournament will play four games in either the championship bracket or in consolation games. Parking for LakePoint events is $5. Baseball game tickets are $5 each day. The Cartersville High School girls and boys track and field teams each placed sixth Saturday at the nine-team Rome Invitational held at Barron Stadium. The Rome girls scored 162 points to finish ahead of Bremen (112), Villa Rica (89), Rockmart (81), and Paulding County (66). The Lady Canes (53) finished ahead of South Cobb (39) and Central-Carroll (15). Carrollton scored 144 points to lead the boys scores. The Georgia Highlands College baseball team took advantage of 12 walks and rapped out 10 hits Sunday to earn a two-game sweep of Macomb CC (Mich.) with a 14-4 win in the second game of their weekend series. The win was also the Chargers’ sixth straight. Bronco O’Brien went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, scored twice, and drove in three runs at the top of the Georgia Highlands’ lineup. Matt Vaccro was 3-for-4 with five RBIs for the Chargers. GHC used three pitchers in the win. Jeremiah Woods was credited with the win in relief of Sean Fitzpatrick. Sam Sowerbrower closed out the final five innings on the mound. Georgia Highlands (12-8) hosts Vincennes University (KS) Wednesday at 11am and will entertain Indian Hills (IA) Friday at 3pm. The Chargers then have a doubleheader with USC-Lancaster on Saturday starting at 1pm and will face Triton College (IL) Sunday at noon. All games are at LakePoint Sports in Emerson.

The Bartow County Recreation Department’s 8U boys basketball team lost Saturday in the semifinals of the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) State Championship Tournament in College Park. Bartow defeated East Point in the state quarterfinals to reach the Final Four, but fell to Dekalb County, 29-24. Bartow trailed 8-4 after one quarter and 14-12 at halftime before surging to a 21-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Dekalb outscored Bartow 10-3 in the final period to come away with a five point victory. Jakez Baldwin scored seven points for Bartow. He was followed by Christian Teasley and Jabari Burleson with four each; Kyron McClendon, three; Jeremy Dent Jr., Jaiden Daise, and Naiser Bennett chipped in with two points each.

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team won twice Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson defeating Cuyahoga CC (Ohio) 10-0 and Macomb CC (Mich.) 11-1. Drew Wilson tossed a one-hit, shutout in the win over Cuyahoga. Wilson walked two and struck out eight. Brandon Bell homered for the Chargers and went 2-for-3. Devin Bilardello also had two hits and two RBIs. Grant Bodison added a hit and finished with three RBIs. In the eight inning win over Macomb CC, Matthew Norton (6 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 11K) and Bradley Hood (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 4K) combined for a two-hitter. Caleb McElwaney and John White led the Chargers’ 13-hit attack with two hits each. Georgia Highlands (11-8) will play Macomb again Sunday at 12noon and will host Vincennes University Wednesday at 11am. Both games are at LakePoint in Emerson.

Adairsville High School alum and Georgia Northwestern Technical College sophomore basketball player Carrie Benedict was recognized nationally last week as a USCAA Division II Honorable Mention Academic All-American. The Bobcats’ sophomore was joined in national recognition by Georgia Northwestern teammate Darrius Fugh. Fugh was named a USCAA Division II Honorable Mention All-American. Benedict was recognized for her 4.0 grade point average while taking 56 hours of classes in Automotive Technology. Participating with the Lady Bobcats requires a daily commute for the Adairsville resident. She takes her classes in Rome and the basketball program is headquartered in Rossville. Benedict saw action in 12 games during the 2016-17 season. She averaged 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team swept a doubleheader Saturday over conference foe, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers won 2-1 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap. With the two victories, both the GHC program and head coach Melissa Wood now have 100 wins. Pitcher Rebecca Meade tossed a complete game, three-hitter in the first game for a 2-1 win. She allowed only one, unearned run and struck out one. The Chargers scored twice in the third inning on a Madison Gianfala walk, a Mackenzy McFarland sac bunt, a Lauren Womack hit, and sacrifice RBIs by Andria Booth and Shayla Smith. In Game Two, GHC put a run on the board in the first inning off three walks and an RBI hit by Hannah Wills. In the fourth inning, Wills walked in front of McFarland’s second home run of the weekend and that would be enough scoring for pitchers Micayla McCoy and Meade. McCoy earned the win with 3.2 innings in the circle. She allowed three hits and struck out six. Meade earned a save over the final 3.1 innings. She scattered three hits and struck out two. The Chargers (22-5 overall, 6-2 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) have back-to-back, road conference doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at South Georgia CC and East Georgia CC.
