The baseball teams at Cartersville, Cass, and Woodland High Schools each won games on the road Tuesday. The Wildcats defeated Armuchee in five innings, while the Canes and Colonels each won one-run games against state-ranked opponents. WOODLAND 13, ARMUCHEE 1 (5 innings) Woodland scored in every frame after the first and posted 13 runs on eight hits in a five inning win Tuesday at Armuchee. The Wildcats also took advantage of three Indians’ errors and nine walks. Kenny Jinks (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 6K, 2BB) was the winning pitcher for Woodland. Garrett Pope (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 2K) closed out the fifth inning. Woodland took an 8-0 lead in the top of the third inning and later added a run in the fourth and four more in the fifth inning for a mercy-rule win. Trenton Harrison (2-for-4, 3RBIs), Jacob Frye (2-for-3, 3RBIs), and Garrett Cornett (1-for-4, 2RBIs) combined for five hits and eight RBIs at the top of the Wildcats’ batting order. Harrison and Bryce Evans hit homeruns. Bryce Evans drove in two runs with a hit. Koby Stancil had a hit and RBI and Brycen Kellet had the other Woodland hit. Jordan Lee and Dylan Webb, who drew three walks, added one RBI each. Armuchee fell to 0-2 with the loss. Woodland (2-0) plays at Adairsville Friday. CASS 2, No. 9 ROCKMART 1 Cass pitchers Cody Johnson, Jake Collum, and Zach Yancey combined on a two-hitter Tuesday at 9th-ranked (Class AA) Rockmart to edge the Yellow Jackets 2-1 in the Colonels’ season opener. Rockmart opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the second inning, but Cass tied the game in the fourth. Nathan Smith hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Bailey Campbell. Campbell had doubled to lead off the inning. Cass got the go-ahead and eventual winning run in the top of the sixth. Johnson doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on an infield error off the bat of Yancey. Yancey (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3BB, 1K) pitched the final two innings to earn the pitching victory for the Colonels. Collum (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 5K) worked the middle innings in relief for Cass. Johnson (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 3BB) started on the mound. Kole Holder (5.2 IP, 2ER, 5H, 2BB, 8K) was saddled with the tough loss for Rockmart. Jac Culver and Holder had the only hits for the Yellow Jackets. Campbell, Johnson, Yancey, Tyler Hendon, and Bryson Markley had hits for Cass. The Colonels (1-0) host Gilmer Wedneday at 5:55pm and play at Adairsville Saturday at 1pm. No. 5 CARTERSVILLE 4, No. 8 JOHNS CREEK 3 The 5th-ranked (Class 4A) Canes won an impressive season opener Tuesday night at 8th-ranked (Class 6A) Johns Creek to begin the 2017 campaign on a winning note. Anthony Seigler played an important role on the mound and at the plate as the Hurricanes edged the Gladiators, 4-3. Seigler lined a homerun over the wall in left field for a 1-0 lead in top of first inning, but Johns Creek answered with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth to go up 2-1. Cartersville responded with two more runs in the fifth to retake the lead 3-2 and added another run in the sixth. Devin Warner had a two-run double in the fifth for the Canes. Jacob Fowler walked and later scored on a Jake Gooch sacrifice fly in the sixth to give Cartersville a 4-2 lead. A Canes’ miscue led to a Johns Creek run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Canes’ lead to 4-3, but Seigler took the mound and kept the Gladiators off the board in the seventh for a Canes’ one-run win. Seigler (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 5K), J.P. Martin (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 3K), and Spencer Dickey (2.2 IP, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 2K) combined on the mound and worked around five Cartersville errors. Johns Creek used four different pitchers. Seigler finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored. Devin Warner had two RBIs with a double.. The Woodland baseball team posted 10 runs over their final two frames to close out the visiting Adairsville Tigers Monday night 11-1 in five innings in both teams’ season opener. The Wildcats scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to break open a 1-1 game and then added five more in the fifth for the run-rule victory. Cauy Williams drove in three runs on a pair of hits and a walk to lead the Woodland offense. Chris Mills drove in a run with two hits and Hunter Reaid had three RBIs in a 1-for-3 performance. Trenton Harrison, who pitched a complete game for the win, plated two runs with a double. Garrett Cornett, Emmanuel Jones, and Jordan Lee had the other Woodland hits. Harrison pitched his way around five Wildcats’ errors. He scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run with five strikeouts. Adairsville used four different pitchers with Chase Powell (2 IP, 2H, 1ER, 3BB, 2K) taking the loss. Taylor Whitley, Caden Gibbs, and Sam Seaman also saw time on the mound for the Tigers. Kyler Pelfrey drove in Adairsville’s only run with a single in the third inning to drive home Whitley and tie the game 1-1. Whitley, Seaman, Gibbs, and Noah Dutton each added one hit for the Tigers. Woodland (1-0) will play at Armuchee Tuesday, before traveling to Adairsville for an 11am start on Saturday. The Tigers will then host Cass at 2pm.

The Bartow County Recreation Department’s 8U Bartow Blue boys basketball team won a pre-district invitational tournament in Calhoun this past weekend by sweeping the round-robin competition. Bartow Blue defeated Calhoun, Bartow White, and Pickens County to win the tournament. A 34-17 victory over Pickens was one of the title clinching wins. Bartow Blue broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter by outscoring Pickens 19-4 in the period. Pickens led 7-5 after one quarter, but Bartow Blue regained a halftime advantage 10-9 and led after three quarter, 15-13. Jakez Baldwin led Bartow Blue with 12 points. Christian Teasley scored eight points, Kyron McClendon six, Jabary Burleson four, Tavaris Burleson two, and Jeremy Dent scored two points. Other members of the Bartow Blue team include: Eli Pearson, Brody Varner, Jayden Daise, and Nasier Bennett. The Georgia Parks and Recreation Department (GRPA) District 5 tournament begins Friday at the Houston Suggs Youth Facility at Hamilton Crossing Park. Bartow Blue opens the District 5 tournament at 8pm Friday against Cobb County. Bartow White is also in the tournament and will face Rome in the first round at 1:30pm on Saturday. The tournament continues through Thursday, February 23. The Bartow County Recreation Department is also hosting the District 5 10U boys tournament on the same dates. Bartow County will be represented by two teams in that event also.

Coach Stuart Chester (photo) and the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes will open the 2017 baseball season as the No. 5-ranked team in Class AAAA according to the Georgia Dugout Club's preseason baseball poll. Blessed Trinity is the preseason No. 1 team in the AAAA classification, followed by St. Pius X and Heritage-Catoosa. Cedartown, also a member of Region 5AAAA with Cartersville, comes in at No. 4 in the classification and fellow region foe Troup County is ranked ninth. East Paulding (No. 8 in Class AAAAA) is the highest ranked team from Region 7AAAAA that includes Cass and Woodland. Kell and Carrollton of that region also received top ten consideration. Ringgold and Calhoun, members of Region 6AAA with Adairsville, are ranked eighth and ninth in Class AAA. Cartersville opens the season Tuesday at Johns Creek at 5pm and will host Mill Creek Saturday at noon. Cass plays at Rockmart Tuesday at 5:30pm and will entertain Gilmer Wednesday at 5:55pm. Adairsville and Woodland play a home-and-home series Monday at Woodland at 5:30pm and Saturday at Adairsville at 11am. Cass will also play the Tigers Saturday at Adairsville at 2pm. Walters State CC (TN) pounded out 19 hits Sunday afternoon in an 8-2 win over the Georgia Highlands baseball Chargers at LakePoint. The win by the visiting Senators completed a three-game series sweep over GHC. Walters State won the first two games Saturday 1-0 and 2-1. Elijah Helton and Hunter Gilliland homered Sunday for the Senators. Helton was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Trey Maslin went 4-for-5, Kyle Ouellette was 4-for-6, and Dylan Harris 3-for-5 with multi-hit games. Walters State used three pitchers to limit GHC to only one earned run on two hits. Senators’ starter Ricky Karcher was credited with the win. Georgia Highlands’ Sam Sowerbrower suffered the pitching loss (2IP, 5ER, 8H, 1BB). Tyler Sellers, Sean Fitzpatrick, Bradley Hood, Peyton Tennant, and Britt Buckelew all saw mound time for the Chargers. Evan Mask and Bronco O’Brien had the only Chargers’ hits. John White drove in a run. Georgia Highlands (2-4) hosts Bryant & Stratton CC (VA) Tuesday and Wednesday at LakePoint with games starting at 5pm and 6pm, respectively. The pitching staff of Walters State CC came up with a pair of fine performances Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Georgia Highlands College at LakePoint. The visiting Senators edged the Chargers 1-0 in Saturday’s first game and won 2-1 in the second game. The Georgia Highlands pitching staff virtually matched the Walters State arms, but it was the Senators' offense that scratched together just enough offense for three runs in the doubleheader sweep while the GHC bats remained relatively silent. Sam Gardner and Nile Ball combined for a three-hitter and 12 strikeouts in the first game shutout. That performance trumped the Chargers’ Colby Taylor and Britt Buckelew who game up only a pair of hits and struck out six. Walters State scored the only run of Game 1 in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by Dylan Harris. In the second game, GHC struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but two runs by the Senators in the top of the third was the difference in a 2-1 final. The Chargers again received solid pitching from five different hurlers, but Hunter Stratton and Hayden Lehman of Walters State scattered four hits and struck out four for the win. Drew Wilson suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers (3.1 IP, 5H, 2ER, 1BB, 5K). Matthew Norton, Ryan Bramlett, Tyler Sellers, and Kyle Brady all worked scoreless outings for Highlands. Devin Bilardello had two hits on the day for the Chargers. John White, Nick Piccapietra, Bronco O’Brien, Grant Bodison, and Nick Fink each added one hit on the day. Georgia Highlands (2-3) hosts Walters State Sunday at 1pm to wrap up the three-game series. The Chargers host Bryant Stratton Wednesday night at 6pm and Lincoln Trail Friday and Saturday. The Georgia Highlands College softball team swept a pair of games Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park to complete the 2017 GHC Border Battle with a 4-0 record. The Chargers defeated Cleveland State (TN) 5-0 in their first game Saturday and then routed 10th-ranked Shelton State (TN) 13-0 in five innings in the second game of day. Micayla McCoy (photo) made history in the win over Shelton State by tossing the first-ever no-hitter for the Georgia Highlands program. She struck out eight. Rebecca Meade won the first game in the circle by throwing a one-hitter over seven frames with seven strikeouts. Hannah Wills led the Chargers at the plate Saturday by going 5-for-6 with a sacrifice. Madison Gianfala was 4-for-5 and Shay Wooten finished the day 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. The Chargers have a week to rest up before heading to Faulkner’s Gulf Shores Tournament next Saturday and Sunday. GHC will also pick up a pair of games Sunday at Enterprise State (AL) to recover cancelled games from earlier this season.

The Cartersville boys basketball team defeated Troup County Saturday to place third in the Region 5AAAA tournament, while the Adairsville Tigers fell to Coahulla Creek in the third place game of the Region 6AAA tournament at Calhoun. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 59, TROUP COUNTY 53 The Cartersville Hurricanes defeated Troup County Saturday at LaGrange High School to earn the No. 3 seed from Region 5AAAA heading into next week’s Class AAAA State Tournament. Jaylon Pugh scored 24 points to lead Cartersville. Trase Fezzia added nine points. T.J. Horton scored eight points. Perignon Dyer totaled seven. JaCorey Johns and JKobe Orr added five points each and Isaac Gridley chipped in with one point. Troup took a 13-9 lead after one period, but the Canes recovered to lead 26-24 at halftime. Cartersville pushed their lead to 46-33 after three quarters and then held on for a six-point win. Jay Jefferson led the Tigers with 17 points. King Mwikuta, Keon Heath, and Montez Crowe added eight points apiece. Troup County will be the Region 5AAAA 4-seed in the state tournament and play at Blessed Trinity in the first round. Cartersville (20-6) will open the state tournament next Saturday at Marist. COAHULLA CREEK BOYS 44, ADAIRSVILLE 25 The Adairsville boys fell to Coahulla Creek 44-25 Saturday afternoon in the third place game of the Region 6AAA championship tournament. The Tigers led 10-7 after one quarter, but were outscored 15-3 in the second period to trail 22-13 at the intermission. Coahulla Creek extended the lead to 35-17 after three quarters. Tyler Phillips led the Colts with 14 points. Austin Tibbs and Maddox Adams added six each as Coahulla Creek improved to 19-7 on the year. Hunter Hice and Mason Boswell scored six points each for Adairsville. Grayson Dailey added four points. Cole Hewatt scored three points while Denzel Pitt, Gaven Crunkleton, and Jesse O’Kelley added two points each. Adairsville (16-13) will open the Class AAA state tournament next week on the road at either Franklin County or Morgan County. Those two teams were playing for the Region 8AAA championship Saturday night at Emmanuel College. The Tigers will play at the winner.
