CARTERSVILLE 48, CHAPEL HILL 7 Cartersville set a new school record Friday night and picked up their 24th consecutive victory in a 48-7 decision over Chapel Hil in Douglasville. The 24 straight wins is currently the longest streak in Georgia. Trey Creamer (photo) had first half touchdown runs of six and two yards. Trevor Lawrence connected with Trase Fezzia (14 yd. TD), Antoine Jefferson (20 yd. TD), and Avery Showell (46 yd. TD) for touchdowns, and Jonathan Cruz kicked a pair of field goals from 33 and 27 yards as the Canes put up 41 first half points. Chapel Hill posted their only score of the night on a 39-yard run by quarterback, Jadon Walker, that narrowed the margin to 24-7 in the second quarter. The Canes led 41-7 at the intermission and the second half was played with a running clock. E.J. Turner caught a screen pass in the third quarter and raced 54 yards for the only score of the second half. Canes quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, was 15-for-28 for 258 yards and four touchdowns. Cartersville (9-0, 5-0 5-AAAA) does not play next week, but will host Troup County November 4. PAULDING COUNTY 30, CASS 24 Paulding County did not take a lead until 1:39 remaining in the game, but is was enough to hold off Cass in a Region 7-AAAAA matchup, 30-24. The Patriots took their first lead of the night, 28-24, on an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brantley Mauldin to Jason Ledford that capped a 75-yard drive aided by a pair of crucial and questionable pass interference penalties along the Paulding County sideline. After pinning the Colonels deep in their own territory, Cass took an intentional safety on a fourth and 29 play at their own one to set up an onside kick. Cass recovered the onside kick in the final minute, but failed to advance from that point and quarterback Brett Gaddy tossed a desperation pass that was picked off by the Patriots to close out the game. Terry Berdin scored on a 60 yard scamper on the Colonels’ first play from scrimmage, but Paulding County answered two plays later on a 51 yard pass from Mauldin to Tyron Summerour. Gaddy’s 8 yard touchdown strike to Ian Whittington gave Cass a 14-7 advantage with 9:09 remaining in the second quarter, but the Patriots again answered with a double-reverse, flea-flicker pass from Mauldin to Dionta Ruffin that went 56 yards and tied the score, 14-14, at the intermission. Thomas Gilliam, who rushed 28 times for 142 yards, capped a 30-yard Cass drive with 8:15 remaining in the third quarter to give the Colonels a 21-14 lead. Paulding tied the game at 21-all, however, by blocking a Cass punt early in the fourth quarter to set up a short drive and a one-yard touchdown run by Mauldin. Cass drove deep into Paulding territory on their next possession, but settled for a 24-yard field goal by Anthony Robledo with 5:03 left in the game that gave the Colonels a 24-21 lead. Cameron Gonyea picked off two passes for the Colonels in their loss. Running back Terry Berdin finished with 77 total yards on 11 rushes and a pass reception. Paulding County improved to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (3-5, 2-4) travels to Villa Rica next Friday and plays at Carrollton on November 4. BREMEN 49, ADAIRSVILLE 24 The Adairsville Tigers fell behind early and never recovered in a Region 6-AAA South matchup at Bremen. The Blue Devils built a 35-7 lead, then held off the Tigers for a 49-24 win. Bremen quarterback Wade Cartwright scored on a 2-yard run that gave the Blue Devils an early 7-0 lead over the Tigers midway through the first quarter. Blue Devils' running back Kyle Bailey followed that up with a 4-yard scoring run as Bremen stretched their lead to 14-0 with 2:35 remaining in the opening quarter. Adairsville got on the board when Roger Redd (photo) hit Chad Lowry for a 42-yard scoring strike that cut into the Bremen lead at 14-7 with 1:55 left in the first quarter. Cartwright connected on a touchdown pass and Bailey scored on touchdown runs of 28 and 65 yards to extend the Blue Devils' lead to 35-7 with 6:22 to go in the first half. Redd then hit Ethan Belcher for 82 yards and a Tigers' touchdown that made the halftime score 35-14. Following a scoreless third quarter, Redd found Travon Branch on an 80-yard touchdown pass that narrowed the margin to 35-21 with 11:39 remaining in the game. Bremen answered again, however, with another rushing touchdown that pushed their lead to 42-21 with 8:30 to go. A 32-yard field goal by Adairsville kicker Josh Honea made the score to 42-24 with 6:40 remaining and Bremen closed out the game's scoring with a Noah Rutledge 2-yard touchdown run that made the final score 49-24. Bremen locked in a region crossover playoff spot with their second sub-region win. The Blue Devils will be the third-seed from Region 6-AAA South and will host the No. 2 seed from 6-AAA North -- Murray County -- for a Class AAA state playoff berth on November 4. Adairsville (2-6, 0-3 Region 6-AAA South) hosts Haralson County Friday. Both teams are seeking their first sub-region win, but the winner will advance to a meaningful game the following Friday. The Adairsville/Haralson County winner will host the top seed from Region 6-AAA North — North Murray — on November 4 for a spot in the Class AAA state playoffs. The Adairsville/Haralson County loser will finish fifth in the sub-region and will host Coahulla Creek (5th-seed 6-AAA North) in a regular season final game without playoff implications.

It went down to the wire in the final game, but the Woodland softball team lost both games of a doubleheader Wednesday night and were eliminated in their second round Class AAAAA playoff series at Whitewater. The losses brought to an end an outstanding playoff run by the local Lady Cats. Whitewater -- also Lady Wildcats -- won the opener 7-2 and then took the nightcap of the doubleheader, 4-3 in eight innings, to sweep the best-of-three series. Woodland totaled nine hits in the opener, but squandered some scoring chances by leaving eight runners on base. Whitewater posted two runs in the first, second, and fourth innings of Game 1 and another run in the third inning to stake a 7-1 lead. Brittney Cox and Audrey Morris were both two-for-three in the first game for Woodland. Bella Carnes (RBI), Caroline Higdon (RBI), Jordan Duck, Skylar Chappell, and Emma Jordan added one hit each. Katelyn Perry was three-for-four with one RBI, while Lauren King had two hits and two RBIs for Whitewater in Game 1. Perry hit a solo homer and doubled. Bailey Vessell totaled a pair of hits with one RBI. Jordan Roy (RBI), Sarah Middleton (double), and Ruth Jones had the other Whitewater hits. Middleton (15 IP, 5R, 1ER, 17H, 3BB, 13K) was the winning pitcher for Whitewater in both games of the double dip. Woodland’s Sarah Baynard 14 IP, 10R, 6ER, 15H, 2BB, 5K) suffered both losses in the pitching circle. Game 2 went to extra innings tied 3-3. Whitewater took an early 1-0 lead, but Woodland tied the game in the third and went ahead 3-1 with two more runs in the fourth inning. Whitewater knotted the score with two runs in the sixth inning. Whitewater, who committed six errors in the nightcap, scored their go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Middleton. Perry and Bailey Vessell of Whitewater combined for five hits in the second game. Middleton and King both drove in two runs with a hit each. Jordan had three hits and one RBI in the finale for Woodland. Duck contributed a double among her two hits. Jamison Kilgo (triple), Morris, and Chappell had the other hits for the Lady Cats. Cox added one RBI. Whitewater advances to the Class AAAAA Elite Eight double-elimination finals in Columbus October 27-29 where they will open against Walnut Grove. Woodland’s season closes with a 15-21 season record.

The Cartersville softball team ran into a hot pitcher and a pair of 2-run homeruns — one in each game — as the Lady Canes were swept from the Class AAAA state playoffs Wednesday night by Northside-Columbus. Northside won the best-of-three second round series with the doubleheader sweep. Northside pitcher Hannah George struck out nine and scattered eight hits in a 2-0 shutout in Game 1, then struck out seven and allowed only one hit in a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap. George also accounted for the second game runs with a first inning two-run homerun. Kayson Boatner hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the first game. Cartersville pitcher Hannah Todd pitched all 13 innings of the two games for the Lady Canes, yielding only three earned runs on nine hits and two walks. Todd struck out 18. Molly Wilson had three hits for Cartersville in the opener. Paris Poston contributed two hits. Colbi Ballard (double), Tara Mathis, and Cio Seigler added one hit each for the Lady Canes. Cartersville left 10 runners on base in Game 1. Lauren McElhaney had the Lady Canes only hit in Game 2. Northside-Columbus (29-5) advances to the Elite Eight finals October 27-29 where they will open the double-elimination segment of the state playoffs against Oconee County. Cartersville’s season ends with a 20-13 mark.

The Calhoun Middle School girls team defeated Ashworth by 10 shots, while the Cartersville Middle School boys team claimed the top six individual places and easily defeated the field by 36 shots to win the 2016 Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association golf championships. Kylee Thornton of Calhoun fired a 39 to win the girls individual title by seven shots over Brooke Wilson of Ashworth. Cartersville dominated the boys tournament by taking the top six spots. Buck Brumlow shot 35 to win medalist honors. Blaine Davis shot 40, followed by Carson Harris, Jake Lawson, and Nate McDonald at 42. The son of Stewart and Andrea Belisario, Bailey has run cross country for the Eagles for the past three years. He is one of the team captains and is the top runner on the cross country team that has improved throughout the season. He ran his season best at the Bartow County Championships and will be one of the major contenders at the Region 6-A meet. Belisario is a multi-sport athlete at Excel, where he also plays forward on the basketball team and is a midfielder on the soccer team. An outstanding student excelling in the classroom, Belisario has a 4.2 grade point average while taking honors and AP classes. He claims AP US History is his favorite class. He is Vice President of the Student Council, leading by example. He is a positive role model to all the students at Excel and is known to go above and beyond what is asked of him. Coaches Christie Taylor and Gary Boulier compliment Belisario for his work ethic, leadership and the positive impact he has on the younger runners on the team. He attends the Church at the Well in Cartersville where he serves as an usher and works with the children in the day care during services. His future plans include attending the Naval or Air Force Academy. T.J. Bosdell is the Elite Athlete of the Week for Adairsville High School. A junior, Bosdell is a leader with the Adairsville cross country team and the JROTC Raiders. Bosdell ran in the Bartow County championship in cross country on October 13 and helped lead the JROTC Raiders to their sixth consecutive area championship October 15. He competed in every event, including a 5K, one-mile cross country rescue, Raider fitness challenge, tire flip, and rope bridge. The grandson of Kent and Tracy Soigmies, T.J. is in the top five percent academically in his class with a 4.0 GPA and is one of the top role models at Adairsville High School. Woodland High School’s Elite Athlete of the Week is Jonathan Holloway. A junior and son of David and Sunita Holloway, Jonathan currently holds the county’s best 5K time for 2016 and has consistently been the top runner for the Wildcats this season. Based on data available from Georgia MileSplit, Holloway has a personal best 5K time of 17:20.22. His best 3200M time is 11:04.46 and has track personal bests of 4:35.81 in the 1500M, 2:08.44 in the 800M, and a 56.44 400M. Anna Mathis is the Elite Athlete of the Week representing Cartersville High School. A sophomore libero on the Lady Canes volleyball team that made the second round of the Class AAAA state playoffs, Mathis has been a varsity player for both of her years in high school. Mathis was named Honorable Mention All-Area 5-AAAA this season and played a vital role in Cartersville’s service returns and back row defense. She played two years of middle school volleyball prior to high school and has also played club volleyball for the past two years. Mathis is the daughter of Kelly Mathis and Kristy and Shane Bramlett. According to Georgia High School Football Daily’s tracking of candidates for the Touchdown Club of Atlanta’s Player of the Year, Cartersville High School junior quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, is the new leader. Quarterback Jake Fromm of Houston County or defensive lineman, Aubrey Solomon, of Lee County has led GHSF Daily’s Player of the Year watch each week this season, until now. With Houston County and Lee County both losing last week, those two candidates face longer odds. From GHSF Daily: Lawrence is having an outstanding season, but not necessarily a monster year. He’s just the safest projection at this point. Lawrence is a big-name player on a team with an excellent shot to win a state championship. Lawrence was 18-of-30 passing for 274 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-21 victory over Sandy Creek. For the season, Lawrence is 139-of-222 (62.6 percent) for 2,174 yards and 27 touchdowns with seven interceptions. Cartersville is 8-0 and ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA. The Cartersville Lady Canes volleyball team fell in their Class AAAA second round playoff match Tuesday evening at Northside-Columbus in straight sets. Northside took two closely decided sets 25-23 and 25-22, before closing out the Lady Canes in the third set of the best-of-five, 25-15. Lauren Wenzell, Rebekah Stevens and Heilman all tied for the Cartersville team lead with five kills each. Elsa Evans had three blocks, while Heilman and Grace Hunter each totaled three aces. Hunter led the team with 10 assists. The Lady Canes' lone senior, Kameron Hendrix, contributed six assists, five digs and two aces. Northside-Columbus advances to the third round of the state playoffs where the bracket will be re-seeded. The Lady Canes, who won the Area 5-AAAA championship, had their season end with a 28-17 mark.

Adairsville's Vic Beasley, Jr. and the Atlanta Falcons came up just short Sunday in Seattle, but the second-year outside linebacker recorded three tackles (two solo) in the two point loss. The Falcons continue to lead the NFC South with a 4-2 mark. The other three teams in the division currently have sub-.500 records with New Orleans and Tampa Bay at 2-3. The defending NFC champion Carolina Panthers are now at the bottom of the division with a 1-5 record.
