Cartersville scored four runs or more in each of their four offensive frames Thursday night in a 23-3 trouncing of Sandy Creek in Tyrone. Sandy Creek contributed to the offensive outburst by committing eight errors. The Lady Canes led 8-1 after two innings and scored nine runs in the top of the third and six more in the fourth. Colbi Ballard (4 IP, 3ER, 5H, 3BB, 4K) picked up the pitching victory. Cio Seigler had a triple and four RBIs in her two hits. Presley Edwards also added four RBIs and had a double. HIRAM 5, CASS 3 Cass saw leads of 2-0 and 3-2 slip away Thursday night at Hiram in a 5-3 loss. The Lady Colonels fell despite out-hitting the Hornets eight to seven. Hiram scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for their come-from-behind win. Sierrah Gani, Hope Elrod, and Sarah Fox led Cass with two hits each. Gani and Elrod both had doubles and one RBI each. Taylor Queen and Brittnee Mayer had the other Cass base hits. Gani, Elrod, and Kalia Carson each stole a base. KELL 3, WOODLAND 1 Kell edged visiting Woodland Thursday night, 3-1 on single runs in the first, fourth, and sixth innings. The Lady Cats scored their run in the top of the fifth on three straight singles by Audrey Morris, Jamison Kilgo, and Bella Carnes followed by an infield error by the Lady Longhorns. Morris finished with a pair of hits. Madgie Robinson and Jordan Duck also added hits for Woodland who out hit Kell, six to three. Sarah Baynard (6 IP, 3R, 2ER, 3H, 5BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss. Woodland (7-15, 3-8 in Region 7-AAAAA) hosts Paulding County next Thursday. TRION 3, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 0 Excel pitcher Hannah Lee allowed only two earned runs and limited Trion to five hits and a pair of walks, but the Lady Eagles were shutout on offense, 3-0. Aliza Baker had two hits including a double and Landry McCollum added a single for Excel's only hits. Excel (8-10) hosts Mt. Zion Monday before traveling to Gordon Lee Tuesday and Christian Heritage on Thursday. ADAIRSVILLE 15, HARALSON CO. 0 Loren Harris allowed only two hits and no walks with a complete game pitching win Thursday night over Haralson County. Adairsville posted two runs in the second inning and five in the fourth for a big early lead. The Lady Tigers then added five more in the seventh inning to complete the rout. Emily Collum had four hits and three RBIs. Bailey Robinson contributed a pair of doubles while going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Natalie Burrow drove in four runs with three hits that included a triple. Adairsville is now 9-8 overall and 6-5 in region play. The Lady Tigers face Sonoraville Tuesday at home.

All four Cartersville and Bartow County high school football teams are in action this week. Woodland and Cass, who faced one another last week, continue play in Region 7-AAAAA. Adairsville hosts Ringgold seeking their first win before beginning sub-region play week after next, and Cartersville entertains Hapeville Charter in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Woodland (0-3, 0-1 in 7-AAAAA) at Villa Rica (2-1, 1-0 in 7-AAAAA) Series: Villa Rica leads this series 3-1 including the last three. Villa Rica won 27-3 at home in 2013 and at Woodland 50-35 in 2012. They also won at Woodland in 2001, 20-19. Woodland won the first-ever meeting at Villa Rica in 2000, 27-15. Maxwell Projection: Villa Rica by 31. Woodland stayed close with Cass for most of three quarters, but failures to finish in the red zone, special teams mistakes, and turnovers ultimately cost the Wildcats. Their opponents this week are also Wildcats. Villa Rica is 2-1 after defeating East Paulding last week, 17-7. Villa Rica also has a 20-13 win over Central Carrollton and lost to LaGrange, 28-7. The top offensive threat for Villa Rica has been running back Elijah Fluker who had a 200+ yard game against Central Carrollton and has racked up big yardage in all three games. Hiram (2-1, 0-1 in 7-AAAAA) at Cass (2-1, 1-0 in 7-AAAAA) Series: The Colonels and Hornets split a home-and-home series in 2008 and 2009 with each team winning at home. Cass won 22-15 in ’08. It is homecoming week for Cass who has averaged 30 points per game in wins over Adairsville and Woodland with a three-point home loss to Sonoraville. First-year, senior quarterback Brett Gaddy has relied on playmakers Laizon West and Terry Berdin from their slot positions, along with the power running of fullback Derrick Maxwell. Devin Pritchett has been the Colonels’ top outside receiving threat. Hiram’s defense features 240-pound nose guard Emmanuel Carter and a bevy of quality linebackers. Nate Presnell is a 6’6” sophomore safety who also quarterbacks the Hornets’ offense. Cass coach Bobby Hughes expects Hiram to use a variety of offensive formations to find matchup problems for his Colonels’ defense. With five teams in each sub-region, the top three from each division will battle in cross-over, region play-in games November 4 to determine the state playoffs qualifiers and a region champion. They will need to find a way to slow down Ringgold’s offensive attack which has scored over 37 points per game in their first three games. The visiting Hornets from Union City and Region 6-AA, arrive at Weinman Stadium Friday coming off back to back losses to Pace Academy (21-7) and Wesleyan (31-14). Hapeville Charter won its season opener in Bryson City, NC, 35-7 over Swain County, NC. Hapeville Charter had its only winning season in 2015. The Hornets were 6-4. The school began playing football in 2011and head coach Winston Gordon has been the Hornets’ only head coach. Hajj-Malik Williams is the signal caller for the Hornets and averaged over 160 yards passing with four touchdowns in the first two games. Junior Johntavious Hill and freshman Marcus Carroll have been the leading rushers for Hapeville, while their top receivers have been juniors Andunte Devereux and Kivante’ Johnson. On defense, the Hornets’ leading playmakers have been senior middle linebacker Ellwood Smith, junior linebacker Richard Hayes Jr., junior linebacker Truth Daniels, and junior defensive end Caleb Kelly. The Hurricanes have been spectacular in their 3-0 start and have now won 18 straight including last season’s 15-0 state title run. Five-star quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, is 53-of-87 for 894 yards and nine touchdowns with three interceptions in three games this season. He has a host of receivers and playmakers including running back Trey Creamer, WR/DB Avery Showell, RB/SL Antoine Jefferson, receiver JaKobe Orr, and more. Lawrence has distributed well during the early season, getting the ball to as many as eight different receivers. The Canes defense has been successful in creating turnovers, including two red zone stops last week against Westlake. Linebackers Sean Holton and Trevor Lowe have made big plays and created pressure and Xavior Coaxum has continued his stellar play from last season.

Defensively, Devin Henderson had eight tackles, Devin Henderson had six tackles, and Jamar Henry had three tackles. The Colts were led by Richard Houston who had 45 yards rushing and 38 yards receiving. Recipients for the week ending September 10, 2016: Tripp Breeden, Cass High School Emily Collum, Adairsville High School Kami Cooper, Excel Christian Academy Robby Earick, Cartersville High School Caroline HIgdon, Woodland High School Tripp Breeden is the Elite Athlete of the Week for Cass High School. Breeden, a junior linebacker and wrestler for the Colonels, is the son of David and Andrea Breeden. In his second year as a starter at inside linebacker for the Colonels, Breeden's leadership on the field and in the weight room is an inspiration and sets the tone for his teammates. In last Friday's 31-7 victory at cross-town rival Woodland, Breeden had 12 tackles, forced a fumble, and returned a fumble for a touchdown. Emily Collum is the Elite Athlete of the Week for Adairsville High School. Collum is a junior catcher for the Lady Tigers’ softball team. A three-sport athlete, she also plays basketball and soccer. In two games last week, Collum was 6-for-8 with four singles and a triple. She scored three runs and added three RBIs. She caught all 14 innings and recorded 16 putouts while not committing an error. The daughter of Tracy and Paula Collum, Emily is a talented and very competitive athlete. She works hard in all she does and is a leader for the Lady Tigers in the weight room. Kami Cooper is the Excel Christian Academy Elite Athlete of the Week. Cooper is the daughter of Brad and Stephanie Cooper and a senior at Excel Christian Academy. She is a multi – sport athlete competing in softball, basketball, and as a competition cheerleader. In her first year as a varsity softball player at Excel, Cooper has played her way into a starting spot in the outfield and has shown continuous improvement throughout the season. She has great range in the position and has made several outstanding catches for the Lady Eagles. Cooper has also shown great improvement at the plate where she utilizes her speed to put balls in play and beat out base hits. Coach Adcock of the Lady Eagles’ softball program nominated Cooper because of the level of improvement he has witnessed from her both offensively and defensively throughout the year. Cooper attends The Church at Liberty Square, where she is a leader and active member of her youth group. She gives back to the community as a participant in Splash Bartow. She enjoys traveling, and spending time with her friends. She plans to attend University of Mississippi and major in nursing. Robby Earick is the Elite Athlete of the Week representing Cartersville High School. Earick, a senior this year, is the Canes’ top cross country runner and has also wrestled. The son of Stephanie and Tim Heath and Brian and Allison Earick, Robby has lettered each of his four years as a runner for Cartersville. In the Canes’ first three meets of 2016, Earick has been Cartersville’s top finisher and has accomplished a 5K personal best of 17:23 at the Jesse Owens Classic. Cartersville cross country coach David Matherne praises Earick’s work ethic. “Hard work is never questioned with Robby,” noted Matherne. “He always works hard in the classroom, at meets, and he is one of the top wrestlers in the state.” Earick carries a 3.6 grade point average. Caroline Higdon is the Woodland High School Elite Athlete of the Week. The daughter of Brent and Tina Higdon, Caroline is a sophomore who plays second base, third base, and in the outfield for the Lady Cats. Higdon currently has a .292 batting average that includes 21 hits and 15 RBIs. She has three doubles and a triple among her base hits. ​​ In the past week, she was 8-for-24 for a .333 average. The Cartersville Lady Canes’ softball team made a four game sweep of the North Cobb Invitational last Friday and Saturday. The Lady Canes picked up wins over Roswell, Camden County, Westlake, and Chattahoochee to even their season mark at 9-9. University of North Carolina commit, Hannah Todd, homered among her two hits and drove in two runs at the plate in an 8-0 win over Roswell. She also tossed three innings of shutout ball in the pitching circle. Todd allowed only one hit and a walk while striking out one. Colbi Ballard did not allow a hit in securing the five-inning shutout. Ballard recorded one walk and two strikeouts. Allie Jackson had two hits, including a double and three RBIs to help lead the Lady Canes’ offense. Molly Wilson and Lauren McElhaney also chipped in two hits each. Cartersville 4, Camden County 0 Cartersville scored single runs in the first and second innings and added two more in the seventh on their way to a shutout victory over Camden County. Hannah Todd tossed a complete game for the win in the pitching circle. Todd struck out 14 and scattered three hits. She also contributed three hits and an RBI at the plate. Cartersville 3, Westlake 2 The Lady Canes took advantage of a pair of Lady Lions’ errors in the bottom of the fifth to score a run and break a 2-2 tie. There was also a walk in the frame and Hope Short had the only Cartersville hit in the inning. It was enough, however, to take the 3-2 win over Westlake. Presley Edwards (double), Molly Wilson, and Hannah Todd had the other Lady Canes’ hits in the game. Colbi Ballard (6 IP, 2R, 1ER, 4H, 1BB, 6K) earned the pitching victory. Cartersville 3, Chattahoochee 2 Cartersville scored twice in the third inning and the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth in a 3-2 defeat of Chattahoochee. The Lady Cougars scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings that tied the game, 2-2. Cartersville’s winning run came on a pair of Chattahoochee miscues allowing Lauren McElhaney and Cio Seigler to reach base. McElhaney later scored on a groundout by Madison McKinney. Hannah Todd blasted a two-run homer in the third inning for the Lady Canes’ other runs. She also picked up the pitching victory, allowing no earned runs, only one hit, and a pair of walks. Todd struck out eleven. Cartersville (9-9, 1-5) plays region games at Sandy Creek Thursday at 5:55pm and has a home region doubleheader Saturday with Troup at 11:30am.

Cass softball took a 7-2 lead in the top of the third inning and led 10-8 going to the bottom of the seventh, but Paulding County’s nine runs over their final five frames and a three-run seventh resulted in an 11-10 region win for the Lady Patriots. Ashley Alexander, who had a perfect night at the plate going 2-for-2 with three walks, hit a walk-off, two-run double to give Paulding the late rally win. She finished the game with three RBIs. Josie Cook also had two hits that included a double and three RBI for the Patriots. Macey Jauregui (2.1 IP, 7R, 5ER, 5H, 3BB, 3K) and Abbie Crawford (4.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 3BB, 9K) split the pitching duties for Paulding County with Crawford picking up the win. The Excel Christian Academy softball team overpowered Model Monday evening, 15-4 in five innings. Excel put two or more runs on the board in four of their five offensive frames while compiling 15 hits. Seven of their hits were for extra bases. Lady Eagles’ pitcher, Taylor Gibson, earned the victory in the pitching circle. She scattered six hits and a walk while allowing only two earned runs. Gibson recorded five strikeouts. Aliza Baker (photo) and Lindsey Mauldin led the offense by combining for five hits and seven RBIs. Baker was 3-for-3 with a homerun, a double, a walk, scored four runs, and drove in four. With that flurry, the Lady Trojans turned a 1-0 lead into a run-rule shortened 9-0 victory in five innings. The Lady Colonels struggled at the plate, managing only one hit by Sarah Moore. Moore also suffered the pitching loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits and four walks. Gordon Lee improved to 12-1 on the year with their shutout victory. Cass (5-11) will host Region 7-AAAAA opponents Paulding County Tuesday at 5:55pm and Hiram Thursday at 5:45pm. The Woodland softball team dropped four games Friday and Saturday at the Lowndes Invitational in Valdosta. Woodland fell to Calvary Baptist 5-2 and Tift 4-1 Friday evening, before losing to the hosts, Lowndes 12-3 and Ware County 4-3 on Saturday. In the four game set, Caroline Higdon finished 5-for-14 with one RBI. Madgie Robinson was 4-for-13 with one RBI. Bella Carnes had a 5-for-5 game with one RBI against Ware County, and Jamison Kilgo was 3-for-7. Sarah Baynard drove in two runs. Skylar Chappell, Emma Jordan, and Brittney Cox finished with two hits each. Woodland (7-14, 3-6) has a Region 7-AAAAA matchup at home Tuesday against Villa Rica at 5:55pm.

The Woodland girls cross country team, recently ranked nationally, placed second at the Carrollton Orthopedic Invitational hosted by Carrollton High School on the Georgia High School Association state meet course Saturday. The Woodland girls were running in the Girls Championship race which included all the top teams in the event regardless of classification. There were also races for schools in Class A-through AAA, Class AAAA and AAAAA; plus a Class AAAAAA and AAAAAAA race. There were 26 teams in the Girls Championship race with over 220 runners. The Lady Cats, competing without lineup regulars Cheyenne Spinks and Casey Bolan, finished 25 points behind North Gwinnett. Westminster placed third, followed by Hart County and St. Pius X to round out the top five teams.
