- Mosby named GCAA all-region first team; GCAA men's basketball tourney this week
The Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Men’s Basketball Championship gets under way this week, starting at school sites for the opening round. The tournament begins Thursday (Mar 3) and will then move to one location for the final four semifinals and championship game (Mar 6-7). Georgia Highlands College (29-1), currently ranked number two in the nation in the latest NJCAA poll, is the tournament’s top seed. The Chargers host the winner of a play-in game between Albany Tech CC and East Georgia CC. The play-in game is Monday night. GHC faces the winner Thursday. Chattahoochee Tech CC (21-9), with former Cartersville standouts Ryan Davis, A.J. Mosby, and Corey Tobin in the lineup, is the tournament's number four seed. The Golden Eagles host Atlanta Metro CC (15-15) Thursday in the first round. Mosby was recently named to the GCAA men's basketball first team all-region team. Davis was named an honorable mention all-region member. The other tournament quarterfinals — also Thursday — include Gordon College at Central Georgia Tech CC and South Georgia Tech at South Georgia State CC. The semifinals are Sunday, March 6 and will be hosted by the highest remaining seed among the opening round winners. The championship game will be at that same site on March 7.
- Youthful Eagles working through early season 'growing pains'
The Excel Christian Academy baseball team for 2016 is very young with six freshmen in the lineup playing their first high school varsity baseball. As expected, the Eagles have suffered some growing pains in the early going and that continued Saturday with an 11-1 loss at Mount Zion. Mount Zion-Carroll scored five unearned runs in the bottom of the second as the youthful ECA defense committed four errors in the inning. Mount Zion-Carroll added two more runs in the third, a single run in the fourth, and closed out the game in the fifth inning by adding three more. “We’ve been really anxious at the plate and a little over zealous,” noted Excel coach Mike Cuomo. “We’ve not manufactured very much at the plate in our first two games and we’ve made too many miscues defensively.” In a loss to Walker on Friday, the Eagles managed only one hit. Saturday, Joseph Cuomo doubled and later came around to score on a sacrifice in the fourth inning. Marco Haro, who also had Friday's hit, and Blane Belisario collected the other Excel base hits. Belisario also stole a base. ECA used three pitchers against Mount Zion. Wyatt Karlovich, Jordan Wilkie, and Belisario each saw time on the mound. Cuomo, Belasario, and Levi Blackwell each pitched in Friday’s loss. “Our pitching has been pretty solid,” said coach Cuomo. “The kids have thrown strikes, we just need to play better defense behind them. Excel has committed nine errors in their first two games. “We’ve decided to keep an eye on pitch counts early in the season. The unearned runs have caused pitch counts to soar for some of our early guys. We have four games scheduled next week so we will try to piece together enough arms to get through it and get all our kids some work,” coach Cuomo stated. Excel's busy week includes home games against Christian Heritage Monday (Feb 29), Trion on Thursday (Mar 3), and North Cobb Christian Saturday (Mar 5). The Eagles will also play Friday (Mar 4) at State Mutual Stadium in Rome against Armuchee. The home games are all 5pm starts. The game in the Rome Braves’ stadium is a 6pm start.
- Georgia Highlands drops first game of series with visiting Sinclair CC
Brandon Bell doubled in the fifth inning and reached base four times for Georgia Highlands College, but the Chargers lost the first game of their series with Sinclair CC 7-5 Friday night at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers opened the scoring in the first on a double by former Cass standout, Brandon Etheridge (pictured), followed by a Zach McCrum single and a Daniel Gooden RBI single. Sinclair answered in the second by scoring twice on an error and, from that point, never trailed. GHC closed the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth, but the visiting Tartan Pride added single runs in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to push their lead to 7-2. The Chargers scored three times in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short. Etheridge and Tristan Roberts drove in the Highlands’ runs. GHC starter, Bryan Quillens (4 IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 5BB, 3K), suffered the pitching loss. Tahnner Thomson, Blake Metivier, and Dalton Isley saw mound time for the Chargers. Brody Basilone was the winning pitcher for Sinclair. It was the season opener for the Tartan Pride (1-0), Georgia Highlands season record falls to 10-6. The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday (Feb. 27) starting at 1pm at LakePoint.

LaGrange jumped to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Wildcats bounced back with five runs of their own in the top of the second. The Grangers retook the lead in the bottom of the second with two more runs, but Woodland kept battling back.
