  • 10U Bartow Colts, Bartow Jets pick up wins; Hurricanes Black and Bartow Falcons battle to tie

    Cartersville Parks & Recreation Department and Bartow County Recreation Department Youth football ​ ​ 10U results Tuesday, October 27 at Dellinger Park HURRICANES BLACK 22 BARTOW FALCONS 22 The Hurricanes Black and the Bartow Falcons battled to a 22-22 tie Tuesday. Braylon Inman had touchdown runs of 88, 6, and 4 yards to lead Hurricanes Black. Avery Higgins scored on a pair of two-point extra point kicks. Kendrick Price had a 46 yard kick return and an 11 yard touchdown run for the Falcons. Asher Jernigan found the end zone on an 11 yard run and Johnathan Gough converted a pair of extra point kicks. CEDARTOWN WHITE 33 HURRICANES PURPLE 19 J.D. Davis rushed for touchdowns of 54, 25, and 45 yards to lead Cedartown. Xavier Holiday also had touchdowns for Cedartown on a 39 yard run and a pass interception return for a score. Davis, Mikey Esqirel, and Marcus Blankenship added extra point runs for Cedartown. Christian Harrison had a pair of scoring jaunts from 49 and 40 yards for Hurricanes Purple. Braden Pittman added a 6 yard pass reception for a touchdown and Paul Gamble scored on an extra point run. ​ 10U results Tuesday, October 27 at Hamilton Crossing Park BARTOW COLTS 25 BARTOW STEELERS 0 Caleb Cooley had a pair of 50 yard touchdown runs, Devin Henderson had a 55 yard rush for touchdown, and Kevin Henderson scored on a 68 yard interception return and an extra point run as the Colts shutout the Steelers. Tae Cochran led the Steelers rushing attack. BARTOW JETS 20 BARTOW PACKERS 18 Chris Roper had three touchdown runs to help lead the Jets past the Packers. Roper’s scoring runs in the first half included a 40-yard dash and a 2 yarder. He also connected with Caden Copeland for a conversion pass and Copeland ran in another PAT as the Jets took a 14-0 lead. The Packers narrowed the lead to 14-6 at the half on the first of three Jamarion Pullum touchdown runs. Pullum scampered 60 yards for a score late in the first half, then added a 40 yarder early in the second half to cut the score to 14-12. The Jets pushed their lead to 20-12 on a Roper 60 yard run, but the Packers answered on a Pullum one yard run with four minutes remaining. The Packers would get the ball back and mount one more drive, but the Jets’ defense came up with the stop to hang on for their two point win. SAVANNAH HARDIN — Young Harris College (Fr., Cass HS) … ran in the Peach Belt Conference Championship meet last Saturday in Gainesville, GA and was seventh on her team that placed fifth in the conference. Hardin was 65th overall in 26:32.7. ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … finished 85th last Saturday with a time of 28:00.52 in the Sand Shark Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina Beaufort. He was second on his team which was 15th of 31 schools. VICTORIA HICKOM — Georgia Southwestern State University (Soph., Cartersville HS) … ran fourth for her team and 61st overall for the Lady Canes at the 2015 Peach Belt Conference Championship in Gainesville, GA last Saturday.   • BGMSAA academic team championship tourney is Saturday at Calhoun MS

    The 2015 Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association academic team championship tournament will be Saturday at Calhoun Middle School. Following over seven weeks of regular season competitions, Adairsville Middle School heads into the league tournament as the top seed, followed in order by Ashworth, Red Bud, Cass, Woodland, Cartersville, South Central, and Calhoun. Here are the updates on games of Saturday, October 24: HAYES LINN — Air Force Academy — (Jr., Cartersville HS) .. had a pair of tackles in the Falcons 42-14 defeat of Fresno State. One tackle was from his safety position. The other was on punt coverage. Air Force is now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain West Conference. In seven games, Linn has recorded 10 tackles and 1 pass break up at free safety. He has started three times. NIAGEL CURTIS — Reinhardt University (Sr., Adairsville, GA, Gordon Central HS). . . team’s leading rusher through 8 games. The Eagles are ranked #8 in NAIA (8-0) and defeated top-ranked Lindsey Wilson (6-1) (KY) Saturday. Curtis rushed for a program-record five touchdowns and a game-high 129 yards in Saturday’s 42-24 Mid-South Conference West Division victory. Curtis now has 704 yards on 119 carries through eight games. He has scored 17 touchdowns on 5.9 yards per carry. He has a long rush of 72 yards and is averaging better than 87 yards per game. He has also caught 3 passes for 40 yards. Reinhardt has a bye week, then travels to Campbellsville (KY) November 7. T.L. FORD II — UNC-Charlotte (Soph., Cartersville HS) … started at wide receiver and had 3 catches for 30 yards in a 44-10 loss to Southern Miss. His longest reception was 17 yards. He was targeted 6 times and made a tackle after an interception. The 49ers are now 2-5 and host Marshall Sat. Oct. 31. TWAN TERRELL — Cornell University (Sr., Woodland HS) … safety saw time in the Big Red’s 44-24 loss to Brown University Saturday in Ivy League action. Cornell plays at Princeton next Saturday, Oct. 31. ISAIAH ROSS — Point University (So., Woodland HS) .. the linebacker had 6 tackles in the Skyhawks’ 66-34 win over Southeastern (FL). Point is now 7-2 on the season and 4-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The Skyhawks next host Ave Maria Univeristy November 7. DA’KELIN WELLS — Maryville College (So., Cass HS) .. started at corner and had a tackle in the Scots 31-26 victory at Averett. A regular starter, Wells is averaging just under 3 tackles per game in conference play. He also has an interception this season. The Scots host LaGrange College Saturday, Oct. 31. CHAZ ROKINS — Maryville College (So., Cass HS) … 6 carries for 8 yards as Maryville improved to 6-1 with a 31-26 victory at Averett. Rokins is now up to 256 yards for the season on 60 carries. MALIK WILKINS — Maryville College (So., Cartersville HS) … received playing time in the Scots 31-26 win at Averett. Maryville is now 6-1 and play host LaGrange College next Saturday. AUSTIN HARRELL — The Citadel (R-Jr., Adairsville HS) … saw playing time in the Bulldogs’ 38-17 Southern Conference win at Furman. The defensive lineman has nine tackles on the season and The Citadel is now 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Citadel will host Mercer Sat. Oct. 31. JUSTIN FLOYD — Furman University (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … saw action on the offensive line for the Paladins who lost to The Citadel 38-17. Furman fell to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Southern Conference. The Paladins’ next game is at Samford October 31 in Birmingham. QUADRE ALLEN — Tusculum College (R-Fr., Woodland HS) the defensive back saw playing time in the PIoneers 45-11 defeat of Limestone. BRANDON THOMPSON — Tusculum College (R-Jr., Woodland HS) .. defensive back recorded a solo tackle in the Pioneers’ 45-11 win over Limestone. Tusculum will host Mars Hill Saturday, Oct. 31. DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia Military College (Adairsville HS) … had 2 tackles and an interception Saturday in a 57-28 win over Arkansas Baptist. has 15 tackles, 3 fumble recoveries, an interception, and leads the nation in the NJCAA in fumbles returned for touchdown with 2. Both scores came against Nassau Oct. 3 in a 42-21 victory. GMC has a 6-3 record and plays at ASA Miami Sat. Oct. 31. MARK QUATTLEBAUM — UNC-Charlotte (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) .. saw special teams action vs. Southern Miss in a 44-10 loss. The 49ers host Marshall Sat. Oct. 31.   • Local high school football playoff update and current region standings

    The 2015 region football standings updated for the GHSA regions that include local schools. In 7-AAAAA, the top 3 teams from each sub-region will square off Friday, Nov. 6 to determine the four state playoff teams. Dalton has locked up Division A and will host the Division B winner for the region championship Nov. 6. The winner will be the No. 1 seed in the state playoff. The loser will be the No. 2 seed. The Division B winner is still a mystery. Kell can create a three-way tie for the top spot with a victory at Sprayberry this Friday. Among the top three at this point, Cambridge beat Kell, Kell beat Riverwood, and Riverwood defeated Cambridge. If the race finishes in a three-way tie, Kell holds the tie-breaker. The No. 3 and No. 4 state playoff spots will be settled with region playoff games hosted by teams in Division A. The second place Division A team will host the third place Division B team and the third place Division A team will host the second place Division B team. Last year, all the region playoff games were hosted by Division B. Cass plays at Rome this Friday night. The winner will be the number 3 team in Division A. Ridgeland is in position to nabbed the fourth spot if they can defeat Southeast and Lafayette the final two weeks. Heritage would jump in if Ridgeland stumbles. In Region 6-AAA, Calhoun, Adairsville, and Sonoraville have firm holds on the top three spots.     Cartersville Parks & Recreation Department and Bartow County Recreation Department Youth football ​ ​ 8U results Saturday, October 24 at Hamilton Crossing Park BARTOW COLTS 28 BARTOW PACKERS 25 Reed Ezell had touchdown runs of 5 and 2 yards plus tossed two-point conversion passes to Christopher Jameson and Tylan Beeman to lead the Colts. Colby Edwards had an 18 yard touchdown run and Beeman added a 22 yard scoring run for the Colts. After trailing early, the Packers narrowed Colts leads to 16-13 and 22-19, but never got closer. The Packers tallied on three touchdown runs from Treshan Reed. Reed’s two 60 yard jaunts and a 15 yarder, along with a 9 yard scoring rush by Anterrius Hames accounted for the Packers’ points. BARTOW BEARS 26 BARTOW FALCONS 12 The Bears and Falcons played a hard hitting contest Saturday, but the big play by the Bears were too much for the Falcons to overcome. Casen Cochran scored on a 61 yard run and a 59 yard touchdown reception from Talan Nix. Isaiah Livsey added a 64 yard touchdown run, and Nix also scored on a 56 yard run. Nix added a PAT pass to Cochran. For the Falcons, Ja’Kai Baldwin scored on touchdown runs of 25 and 22 yards. BARTOW STEELERS 24 BARTOW JETS 6 The Steelers finished their campaign on a winning note defeating the Jets 24-6. Nicholas Wright scored on runs of 19, 35, and 60 yards. Isaac Burnett and Malachi Harris scored PAT’s on passes by Wright and the team scored a safety on a botched shotgun snap by the Jets. Kolt McCord scored on a 25 yard touchdown run for the Jets. 8U results Saturday, October 24 at Weinman Stadium HURRICANES WHITE 24 HURRICANES GOLD 6 Jakaden Leonard led Hurricanes White with touchdown runs of 56, 45, and 13 yards. Baylon Long also had a 36 yard touchdown run for Hurricanes White. Jordan Woods scored the Hurricanes Gold touchdown with a 24 yard scamper. HURRICANES PURPLE 15 HURRICANES BLACK 6 Brodie McWhorter and Miles Mitchell scored on runs of 3 and 4 yards, respectively for Hurricanes Purple. Thomas Peters made a two point conversion pass reception and McWhorter added a PAT run. Xavier Parker scored for Hurricanes Black on a 55 yard burst.   • Cartersville Recreation Department youth basketball registration

    ​The City of Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department is offering registration for youth basketball through November 9. Registration is for boys and girls agest 5-18 at the Dellinger Park Office. The fee is $70 through November 8 and $80 on November 9 on a space available basis only. There is a $20 non-city resident fee if applicable. The age control date is December 31, 2015. Game will begin December 12.     Cartersville Parks & Recreation Department and Bartow County Recreation Department Youth football 10U results ​ October 22 at Dellinger Park BARTOW RAIDERS 20 HURRICANES WHITE 6 Collin Fletcher scored twice and Evan Sanders added a touchdown as the Raiders defeated Hurricanes White. Fletcher had scoring runs of 25 and 9 yards. Sanders scored on a 6 yard rush. Trip Bradley added a two-point PAT kick. Pearce Mullinax scored for Hurricanes White on a 5 yard run. HURRICANES PURPLE 41 BARTOW BEARS 6 Paul Gamble scored on touchdown runs of 48, 15, and 25 yards to lead the Hurricanes Purple attack.     Former Cartersville Purple Hurricane and Florida State Seminole, Andre Fluellen, told Sports Illustrated's Eric Single his NFL story is unique. “I have a story," said Fluellen. "There’s not many players who can say they’ve been released eight or nine times. That’s a story to me.
