- Fourteen down, Dome to go!
The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes have thrilled the community with yet another exciting run deep in the state football playoffs and will take their unbeaten record into the Georgia Dome Saturday afternoon (4:30pm, GPB TV Sports) to face arguably the most storied program in Georgia High School Association football history. The Buford Wolves, coached by former Marietta High School and Auburn University star — Jess Simpson — will be the opponent for the Canes in what promises to be yet another classic tilt. Buford (13-1) has continued a dominant run in 2015, but has been challenged more closely than in recent years. Their only loss, however, came to Class AAAAAA power, McEachern, on the road early in the season. Buford trailed Woodward Academy 18-7 in the first half of their state semifinal game last Friday before driving 80 yards in the final minute to narrow the halftime deficit to 18-14. Martin Mangram, who finished with 119 yards on 15 carries scored three Wolves’ touchdowns and Buford controlled the second half to win 35-18. Cartersville cruised to their fourteenth straight win by dominating Bainbridge in the semifinals, 38-7. The only Bainbridge score came on a 96 yard kickoff return by Dameon Pierce. Canes’ sophomore quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 209 yards on 13-of-25 with three touchdown passes. Kobie Whitfield scored on a 70-yard punt return in the second quarter and had a pair of second half interceptions. Senior and Alabama commit, Miller Forristall, caught a pair of touchdown passes. Terrius Callahan had a touchdown reception and Tiamon Pennymon added a touchdown run while the defense kept the Bearcats bottled up for most of the night. Buford opened the 2015 season with a pair of August wins over Eastern Christian Academy (Elkton, MD) and Berkmar, before losing 37-14 at McEachern Sept. 4. The Wolves have since reeled off eleven straight wins and their defense has recorded eight shutouts. In fact, Woodward Academy was the first team to score more than once against Buford since the McEachern loss. The Wolves are not only the Class AAAA defending champions, but are striving for their eighth state championship in nine seasons. Since 2000, Buford has won 221 of 234 games. The Wolves are 152-8 in regular season games and 68-5 in the state playoffs. Buford is also 13-1 in games played at the Georgia Dome during that stretch and 10-3 in state title games. In its entire football history, the Buford program has 27 region championships, has been in the state playoffs 17 consecutive seasons, and has won 11 state titles. This will be the fifth meeting between the two programs. Buford has won all four previous matchups. Buford won regular season games in 2006 (28-25) and 2007 (40-0) and won state semifinal playoff games in 2012 (21-10) and last year (27-3). Cartersville has won 18 region championships since 1936 and fourteen since 1989. The Hurricanes won state titles in 1991 under head coach Mike Earwood and in 1999 under the direction of coach Frank Barden. The 1991 title team was led by Georgia Player of the Year, running back LaShon Darby; all-state linebacker Raymone George; quarterback John Woodard; and wide receiver Michael Roberson. In 1999, future Auburn and NFL star, Ronnie Brown led the Hurricanes team that also had all-state wide receiver Lavada Johnson and all-state defensive lineman, Albert Turner. In only his second season at the helm of the Hurricanes, coach Joey King has compiled a 26-2 record at Cartersville and the current senior class has now won 50 games in four seasons. The Cass High School Colonels wrestling team competed in two different varsity tournaments this past weekend and finished runner-up in both events. Cass coach D.L. - Bartow 12U youth football all stars defeat Walton Co. to advance to state title game
The Bartow County 12U youth football all stars defeated Walton County, 38-22, Sunday afternoon in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) state semifinals. The game was played at Dalton's Harmon Stadium. Bartow will face the winner of the other semifinal game between Columbia County and Valdosta. Bartow took an early 12-0 lead on a first quarter, two-yard quarterback keeper by Andrew Nguyen and a seven-yard scoring run by Thomas Knight. The second touchdown came near the mid-point of the second quarter. The extra point failed following both Bartow scores. Walton County responded with a 10 yard touchdown run and a 2-point PAT kick to cut the Bartow lead to 12-8. Bartow answered with a drive that was culminated on Knight's second touchdown run of the game. This time, it was a 10 yard run that extended the lead to 18-8. Walton County threatened again with the first half clock winding down, but an interception by Bartow and a return to the ten yard line set up Knight's third touchdown of the first half and gave Bartow a 24-8 lead at the intermission. Walton narrowed the Bartow lead to 24-16 with their opening drive of the second half. The touchdown occurred on a 32-yard run. Walton also successfully converted another two-point kick. Bartow came back down the field and scored on a 30-yard run by Emmanuel Hayes and held a 30-16 lead. Walton answered again with a scoring drive just before the end of the third quarer. The Bartow lead was 30-22 until the four mintue mark or the fourth period. Bartow's Knight punched in his fourth scoring run of the game from 12 yards to push the Bartow lead back to 38-22 follow the PAT kick. The Bartow 8U youth football all stars and the 10U Bartow all stars were both eliminated in GRPA state semifinal games Sunday. In the 8U semifinal, Bartow answered an early Walton touchdown with an 80-yard run by Jakai Baldwin. Isaiah Livsey added the PAT run for Bartow. That would be as close as it would get. Walton scored three more times in the second quarter to take a big lead and cruised to a 31-7 victory. The Bartow 10U all stars also lost their semifinal matchup Sunday with Walton County, 18-0, in Dalton. Walton scored in the first quarter and twice in the third period to eliminate Bartow and advance to the state championship. - Cass coaching legend, Seymour, passes away
The Cass High School boys' basketball coach that led the Colonels to their first two state championships in school history during the 1956-57 and 1957-58 seasons passed away this week. Coach Phillip B. Seymour was 88 and was living in Monroe, GA. Photo: The 1957 GHSA Class A state championship trophy presentation in Macon. (L-R) Robert Cornett, Coach Phillip Seymour, Charles “Polly” Wilson, and Clyde Lowery. Cass won the Class A state championship again in 1958 and was state runner-up to Cochran in 1959. Seymour arrived at Cass in the late 1950s and the fortunes of the Colonels' basketball program skyrocketed. He took over a team that had suffered a losing season the year before and propelled them to back-to-back state titles and a near miss in the third year. This occurred in an era when only one team from each of Georgia's eight districts even advanced to the state tournament in the old Macon Coliseum, so the region or district tournament in basketball was crucial at the end of each regular season. Seymour's 1956-57 team defeated Elberton, 64-59 to win the GHSA Class A state title, following an opening round win over Carrollton (63-37) and a 66-59 semi-final victory over Swainsboro. The following year (1957-58), Seymour's Cass boys won the District 7 title again. The Colonels then beat Winder-Barrow 45-40, topped Milton 47-29 in the state semifinals, and defeated Statesboro for the 1958 Class A title, 50-44. A third straight state title was narrowly missed in 1959. Seymour's team made the state tournament with another District title and defeated Milton in the opening round 56-44. Cass then edged Winder-Barrow in the state semifinals 41-37 before falling in the state championship game to Cochran, 47-40. The Meadows Funeral Home of Monroe, GA shared the following obituary. An online Guestbook is currently still available for leaving a condolence message at www.meadowsfuneralhomeinc.com . Phillip B. Seymour Phillip Burden Seymour, age 88, of Monroe, died on November 29, 2015. He was born in Bowman, Ga on July 31, 1927 to the late Augie Irene Burden Seymour and the late Jesse David Seymour.
