The River Ridge Knights had six hitters to combine for 11 hits, 11 RBIs, and 13 runs scored in a 16-4 defeat of the Woodland Wildcats Friday night in Woodstock. With the victory, River Ridge completed a sweep of Woodland in both teams' first three-game sub-region series of the season. Woodland struck first in the game, scoring four runs in the top of the first. The inning was highlighted by a three-run double by Adam Martin. The Knights answered quickly, however, scoring seven runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. Nine more runs by River Ridge over the next two innings put the game away. Martin finished with three RBI for the Wildcats. Mitchell Taylor, Trent Harrison, Brandon Allen, Hunter Reaid, and Jacob Frye had the other Woodland hits. Grayson Bagwell suffered the pitching loss in only one inning of work. Harrison pitched the final three innings for the Wildcats. Woodland is now 1-5 overall and 0-3 in Region 7-AAAAA-A. The Wildcats have a three-game sub-region series with Rome next week. Woodland plays at home Monday and Friday. The Wolves will host Wednesday. All three games are scheduled to start at 5:55pm.

The Adairsville boys soccer team fell behind 2-1 at Model Wednesday night, but rallied for the second straight game to come-from-behind and pick up their fifth win of the year, 3-2. “We’re playing very well right now,” said Tigers coach Kelly Abernathy. “We’ve exhibited some great offensive play and ball movement.” The Tigers put 23 shots on goal against the Blue Devils. Three different players scored goals for Adairsville. Freshmen Chris Rodriguez and Joseph Pacheco along with sophomore Danny Carillo found the back of the net. Senior team captain Jesus Garcia had two assists on the night. Abernathy has also been impressed with his team’s defense. “We were able to shut Model down in the second half of the game,” noted the Tigers’ coach. Senior keeper and captain, B.J. Hardman, combined with Stuart Abernathy and Nick Jackson for ten saves in net. Tyler Lummus and Austin Barry were both credited with great defensive plays that negated Model scoring chances. The Tigers (5-1) travel to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Tuesday (March 8) to open Region 6-AAA play. They host Coahulla Creek Thursday (March 10).

The Adairsville Tigers scored twice in the top of the seventh at Darlington Wednesday, to escape with a 5-3 win. Lane Griffith and Hayden Morrow had a pair of hits and one RBI each for Adairsville. Sam Seaman, Taylor Whitley, Drake Arp, and Orry Carter had one hit each. Whitley, Arp, and Kyler Pelfrey drove in a run. Pelfrey picked up the pitching victory in relief. He worked three scoreless innings down the stretch yielding two hits, a walk, and recorded two strikeouts. Seaman pitched the first inning and one-third for Adairsville. He allowed a pair of earned runs on three hits and three walks. Seaman struck out four. Noah Kelly recorded two outs in the fourth, allowing one run and a pair of walks. Trey Yunger had two hits for Darlington. Jay Shadday drove in two Darlington runs. Jake Womack, who pitched 5 and 2/3 innings, suffered the pitching loss. Womack allowed the final three Adairsville runs on seven hits and four walks. He struck out two. Adairsville (2-0) hosts North Cobb Saturday at 1pm and will play Kennesaw Mountain Tuesday (March 8) at LakePoint in a 5:55pm start. The Tigers open their region slate Friday (March 11) at Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe.

The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams both shutout LaFayette Wednesday to open the 2016 region slate. The Lady Canes defeated LaFayette, 6-0. Chloe Davis, Courney Rhea, and Marissa Mowry scored two goals each for Cartersville. Claire Choate, Sydney Miller (2), Mowry, and Davis were credited with assists. Abby Robinson earned the shutout in net for Cartersville. The Lady Canes are now 3-0 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAA. The Cartersville boys soccer team also opened play in Region 7-AAAA with a 7-0 blanking of LaFayette. Pedro Robledo and Osbaldo Senderos scored a pair of goals each for the Canes. Jonathan Cruz, Blake Cheek, and Victor Guevara scored the other Cartersville goals. The Canes (4-1, 1-0) and Lady Canes host Sprayberry Friday.

The Adairsville Lady Tigers’ soccer team improved to 6-0 Wednesday night with a come-from-behind, 5-3 victory over Model. Emily Collum scored three goals to ignite the Adairsville offense after Model took an early 2-0 lead. Gillian Johnson scored in the 15th minute to get the Lady Tigers on the board and narrow the Lady Blue Devils lead to 2-1. Aimee Pacheco scored Adairsville’s third goal in the 39th minute. It was assisted by Katie Lawhorn. Havyn Isaac earned the victory in goal. The Lady Tigers play at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Tuesday at 5:30pm

The Woodland Wildcats led 5-2 through three innings Wednesday night in a home, sub-region matchup with River Ridge, but the Knights scored seven unanswered runs over the final four innings to win, 9-5. Jacob Frye had a pair of doubles, a single, one RBI and one run scored to spark the Wildcats’ offense. Grant Robinson followed with a pair of hits and two RBI. Mitchell Taylor also collected two hits with one RBI. Brandon Allen and Adam Martin had the other Woodland hits. Cauy Williams drove in a run. The first three hitters in the Knights’ order — Nick Blubaugh, Noah Fitzgerald, and Luke Berryhill — did the bulk of the damage for River Ridge. The three combined for eight hits and five RBI. Mitchell Taylor (3.1 IP, 6H, 5R, 4ER, 1BB, 3K), Garrett Pope (2 IP, 4H, 1BB, 1K), and Rodolpho Romo (1.2 IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 3BB, 1K) each pitched for the Wildcats. Woodland (1-4, 0-2) looks to get at least one win in the three-game series at River Ridge (4-1, 2-0) Friday in Woodstock. First pitch for Game 3 of the sub-region series is scheduled for 5:55pm.

Steven Spell drove home the go-ahead run and totaled four RBI on the night as Cass defeated Creekview 5-4 in a sub-region matchup in 7-AAAAA-A. The Cass victory evened the series at one game each. The two teams meet again Friday at Cass. With the score knotted at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, Spell single to drive home Evan Hinton and Casey Patterson. The Grizzlies scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by #32 that scored #23 Potts, but Cass pitcher Jordan Reed got out of the inning with a fly ball to end threat and secure the one run win. Cass (2-2 overall, 1-1 in sub-region) scored three times in the top of the first after two outs. Spell drove home Casey Patterson and Reed with a single to left. Nathan Smith drove in the other run with a ground ball single to left. Reed (2 IP, 2H, 1R, 0ER, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of Hinton (5 IP, 5H, 3R, 1ER, 3BB, 3K). Spell’s two-hit, four-RBI performance led the Colonels’ offense. Nathan Smith had a hit and RBI. Bailey Campbell and Patterson had the other Cass hits. Cass hosts Creekview Friday at 5:55pm and plays Monday and Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson. The Colonels play Norfolk Academy (VA) Monday (Mar 7) at 5:30pm and will face Ooltewah (TN) at 5:30pm on Wednesday (Mar 9).

The Canes managed more hits than Parkview Wednesday night at Richard Bell Field, but came up on the short side of the scoring as the visiting Panthers edged Cartersville, 3-2. Cartersville took an early lead in the bottom of the first on a single by Devin Warner that scored Parker Tidwell. Parkview scored twice in the top of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Canes responded with a tying run in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Trevor Lowe reached on an infield error, moved up on a wild pitch, and eventually scored on a single by Anthony Seigler. Parkview (1-2) scored the game winning run in the top of the fifth when Will Etheridge singled home Allan Del Castillo. Panthers’ senior right hand pitcher, Corey Whitlock, picked up the win for Parkview in relief. Whitlock pitched 2 and 2/3 innings and allowed no runs. Caleb Mitchell went four innings and allowed a pair of earned runs in his start for Parkview. Mitchell struck out seven and walked two. Garrett Fowler retired the final out of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Seigler suffered the pitching loss for the Canes. The ambidextrous sophomore walked one, struck out three, and allowed only one run in three innings of work on the mound. He worked the fifth inning right-handed and the last two innings left-handed. Starter, Elliott Anderson, pitched the first four innings for Cartersville. Anderson yielded two earned runs on two hits and five walks. He struck out six Parkview batters. Warner finished with two hits and an RBI for the Canes. Seigler, Anderson, Lowe, Cole Jamieson, and Jacob Fowler had the other Cartersville hits. Cartersville (0-3) plays Coosa Saturday at 6pm at State Mutual Stadium in Rome. The Canes then face Montevarde Academy (FL) at LakePoint on March 10 (3:45pm) and play at Collins Hill Monday, March 14 in a 5:30pm start.

SMYRNA, Ga. – Former Cartersville Hurricane, now a sophomore guard with the Golden Eagles, A.J. Mosby hit a three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining to give Chattahoochee Tech an 81-79 win Tuesday night in the GCAA tournament quarterfinals. The back-and-forth game featured 12 ties and 22 lead changes and saw the fourth-seeded Golden Eagles come back from a 41-36 halftime deficit. After Chattahoochee Tech (22-9) took a 78-77 lead on a Trevin Steede tip-in with 43 seconds to play, Atlanta Metro countered with a lay-up with 20 seconds remaining. On the Golden Eagles’ final possession, a missed Corey Tobin three led to a scramble for the ball, which was eventually picked up by Steede and tossed to Mosby in the corner. Mosby, who finished as the game-high scorer with 29 points, rose up to hit his fourth three of the game to fend off the No. 5 seed Trailblazers. The game’s final possession ended with a deflection of the Atlanta Metro inbounds pass. Mosby, recently named to the GCAA all-conference first team for the second year in a row, was 10-of-18 from the field, 4-of-9 from three and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. He added three rebounds, four assists and two steals in just over 37 minutes played. Ryan Davis (Cartersville HS) added 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, seven rebounds and three steals, and Keith Ray (Hillgrove HS) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Steede (Wheeler HS) contributed eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, and Tobin (Cartersville HS) had six points and three rebounds. The Golden Eagles withstood outstanding individual efforts by Carnilious Simmons (25 pts, 13 rbds, 2 blks, 2 stls) and Fred Galloway Jr. (10 pts, 18 rbds) of Atlanta Metro. The first-round meeting between Chattahoochee Tech and Atlanta Metro was the second straight, as Tuesday’s win avenges a 76-74 home loss to the Trailblazers in last year’s GCAA tourney. The Golden Eagles move on to the semifinals, where they will travel to conference No. 1 seed Georgia Highlands on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. tip in Rome. Georgia Highlands, which went undefeated in conference at 16-0 and is fresh off a 104-95 win over No. 8 seed East Georgia State, ranked the No. 2 in NJCAA Division I. The Golden Eagles have dropped the teams’ two previous meetings, 87-77 on the road and 91-85 at home.

The Cass girls soccer team battled unbeaten Dalton through regulation time and overtimes Monday night. There was even a lightning delay that extended the length of the match, but Dalton ultimately won the match on penalty kicks at Cochran Stadium. The Lady Colonels and Lady Catamounts were tied 3-3 after regulation and overtimes. Dalton took the lead in the opening minutes on a goal by Deanna Marquez assisted by Angelise Altamirano. Cass responded in the eighth minute when Kelsey Rivera found Logan Vermaas and she put one in the back of the net. Dalton’s Salma Hijar put Dalton back ahead 2-1 with a headed goal off a corner kick by Altamirano, but Cass would respond again. Morgan Delarm scored for the Lady Colonels in the 29th minute on an assist from Stephanie Robledo to tie the score, 2-2. Dalton’s third goal came off a penalty kick after Cass was whistled for a handball in the penalty box. Maria Medina scored the goal for the Lady Catamounts. Cass' Sidney Vermaas tied the game in the 72nd minute with the Lady Colonels' third goal. There were no goals in the overtime periods, so the sub-region game went to penalty kicks. Dalton missed its first two attempts. Cass converted on its first two attempts, but Dalton made three in a row while the Lady Colonels were stopped on two attempts by the Dalton keeper. The final Cass attempt sailed high over the crossbar and the Lady Catamounts had a 4-3 match victory by outscoring Cass, 3-2, on the penalty kicks. With the loss, the Lady Colonels fall to 2-3-1 overall and 0-1 in sub-region play. Dalton improved to 2-0-1 and is now 1-0 in 7-AAAAA-A. Cass plays at Woodland Friday (March 4) and travels to currently unbeaten Paulding County March 9.

The Bartow County Lions Club is hosting the Harlem Ambassadors for a community basketball event on March 7th at 7:00pm at Cass High School. This is an event families can enjoy together.
