The Woodland wrestling team will wrestle for the state championship for a sixth consecutive season Saturday when they hit the mats at the Macon Centreplex against defending state champion, Camden County, at 3 p.m. The second-seeded Wildcats reached the GHSA Class AAAAA title rematch with victories over Effingham County (57-18), Jones County (53-18), and Allatoona (56-12). Cass remains in contention for one of the top spots at the state tournament despite losing in the championship quarterfinals to Clarke Central, 29-28. The Colonels have tournament wins over Dunwoody (35-25), Heritage-Conyers (49-18), and Starr’s Mill (47-18) and have reached the consolation bracket’s semifinal round. Cass has clinched a top five finish and needs two wins Saturday to place third.

EXCEL CHRISTIAN GIRLS 35, CHRISTIAN HERITAGE 28 Whitney Harris led the Lady Eagles with a game-high 15 points as Excel Christian improved to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in Region 6A. The Lady Eagles led 10-1 after one period and 17-11 at the break. They extended their lead to 25-14 after three quarters and held on for the seven point win. Rylie Boston added seven points for Excel. Anna Lane Hattaway scored six, while Brighton McCollum added three. Kalli Beth Scheff and Lindsey Mauldin chipped in with two each. Kelsey Schneller led Heritage with eight points. Excel hosts Walker Saturday at 1:30pm and travels to Mount Paran Christian Tuesday night. EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 70, CHRISTIAN HERITAGE 46 Darius Thrower scored 30 points, while Caleb West and Chris Hale totaled 17 each as the Eagles picked up an important Region 6A win. Excel improved to 8-9 overall and 3-1 in region play. The Eagles host Walker Saturday at 3pm and play at Mount Paran Christian Tuesday night. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 92, PICKENS 40 The Hurricanes rolled up 57 first half points and cruised to a 52-point home, Region 7AAAA win Friday night at the Storm Center. Jaylon Pugh and Cade Archer led the Canes with 20 and 18 points, respectively, as the starters were limited to only two and a half quarters of playing time with the large lead. Cortney Cooley scored 10 points of the Cartersville bench. He was followed by Travon Davis 8, Trase Fezzia 7, Kobie Whitfield 6, Tiamon Pennymon 6, T.J. Horton 5, Daunta Bryan 4, JKobe Orr 4, and Kameron Whitfield 2. Trent Rizoti led the visiting Dragons with 10 points. Cartersville (11-4 overall, 7-1 in 7AAAA) surged to an early 27-11 lead after just one quarter and led 80-34 after three periods. The Canes have a pair of non-region games coming up. They play at Rome Saturday at 4:30pm and play at Woodland Monday at 7pm. PICKENS GIRLS 62, CARTERSVILLE 40 The visiting Lady Dragons took a 25-17 lead by halftime and extended that to 48-25 after three quarters on their way to a Region 7AAAA victory at the Storm Center Friday night. Pickens evened their season record at 9-9 overall, while the Lady Canes slipped to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in region games. Cartersville has non-region games at Rome Saturday at 3pm and at Woodland Monday at 5:30pm.

The Cass girls' and boys' basketball teams defeated visiting county rival Woodland Friday night to gain Region 7AAAAA wins. CASS GIRLS 48, WOODLAND 33 The Lady Colonels broke open a close game in the third quarter and pulled away for a 15 point Region 7AAAAA victory. Woodland led 6-5 after a slow start by both teams and Cass regained the lead 18-17 at the intermission. The Lady Colonels outscored the Lady Cats 18-9 in the third period and 30-16 in the second half to pick up the win. The leading scorer for the Lady Colonels was Payton Stoddard with 14 points, followed by Esmeralda Thomas with 13 points, and Jana Morning with 10 points. The leading scorer for the Lady Wildcats was Gabby Bradley who had a game high 17 points. Erykah Pender and Hayley Roberson added six points each for Woodland. Cass improved to 10-8 overall and 3-5 in 7AAAAA. Woodland is now 4-14 and 0-7 in the region. Woodland hosts Cartersville Monday (Jan. 18) at 1:30pm. CASS BOYS 59, WOODLAND 31 The Colonels hosted the Woodland Wildcats on Friday night, in what was a scrappy game in the first half. The Colonels were helped by Matthew Mundy and Mike Sims who hit some huge shots in the third period. Cass led at each quarter stop, 10-7, 25-19, and 46-28. The leading scorer for the Colonels was Mike Sims with 14 points followed by Matthew Mundy with 13 points, and Ashton Burley with 11 points. Johnathan Pritchett led Woodland with 15 points, followed by Camden Royal with five points, and Justice Hayes with four points. Woodland (3-13 overall, 0-7 in Region 7AAAAA) hosts Cartersville Monday (Jan. 18) at 3pm. SMYRNA, Ga. – The Chattahoochee Tech men's basketball team defeated Southern Crescent on Thursday night at the Smyrna Community Center thanks to a 36-point performance from a local player, A.J. Mosby. In the nonconference matchups, Mosby’s scoring helped the men to a 79-71 win as he logged all 40 minutes in the victory. Mosby’s 36 points came on 12-of-18 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. The Cartersville High alum added six rebounds, two assists and three steals. Ryan Davis (Cartersville) added 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Jordan Oliver (Rabun County) chipped in 11 points off the bench with four rebounds and two steals. Arthur Bennett (McEachern) added 14 rebounds, six points and two blocks. The Golden Eagles (17-1, No. 14 NJCAA Division I) trailed 32-31 at halftime and found themselves trailing by one point with 10 minutes to play, 50-49, before taking the lead for good and pulling away. Chattahoochee Tech stretched the lead to 14 points, 78-64, late in the game. The team shot 28-of-55 from the floor for a 50.9 percent clip. The Golden Eagles look forward to a big matchup at No. 2 Georgia Highlands in Rome on Monday for a clash between the only two unbeaten teams in the GCAA Division I standings; Georgia Highlands holds a 17-1 overall record and 6-0 mark in GCAA play, while Chattahoochee Tech is 4-0 in conference. Tip-off against Georgia Highlands is at 7:30 p.m.

The two local high school wrestling teams, Woodland and Cass, took care of opening round business Thursday afternoon at the 2016 Class AAAAA GHSA State Team Duals Championship at Macon Centreplex. Second-seeded Woodland easily defeated Effingham County, 57-18, in the first round. Cass, the fifth-seed, defeated Dunwoody 35-25 in the opening round. With their wins, both local teams advance to the state quarterfinal round at 9:45am Friday at the Macon Centreplex. The Wildcats will square off with seventh-seeded Jones County. The Greyhounds defeated LaGrange in the opening round, 46-30. The Colonels’ quarterfinal opponent is fourth-seeded Clarke Central who defeated Grovetown 62-9 in the first round. Top seeded Camden County advanced with a 64-3 win over Luella. Camden will wrestle Starr’s Mill in the quarterfinals. Starr’s Mill defeated South Paulding 35-34 in the first round. The Camden/Starr’s Mill winner will face the Cass/Clarke Central winner in the state semifinals Friday night. Third-seeded Allatoona defeated Heritage-Conyers 59-16 and Union Grove defeated Southwest DeKalb 66-18 to advance. Those two winners are matched up in the quarterfinals with the winner to wrestle the Woodland/Jones County winner in the state semifinals Friday night. In Woodland’s 57-18, opening round win over Effingham, the Wildcats recorded wins by pin by Gavin Nix (106-pounds), Jahvar Lewis (120), Logan Sims (132), Spencer Cooper (145), Cody Cochran (152), Joseph Jones (160), Brett Shedd (195), and Dalton May (285). Kurtis Feanny won 6-2 at 220-pounds for Woodland and Effingham forfeited the 113-pound spot. Dawson Woods lost a tough match to Effingham’s two-time state champion at 126 pounds and Jacob Frye lost a tight decision at 170 pounds. “I thought we wrestled well,” said Wildcats’ head coach Adrian Tramutola. “We had the opportunity to get some younger guys in matches, so that’s good for us having to face Jones County tomorrow morning.” he concluded. In the Cass first round victory, the Colonels’ heavyweights got the team off to a quick start. Tripp Breeden (195), Dallas Huston (220), and Seven Richards (285) were the first three on the mat for Cass and each came off with a win. Breeden defeated Isom Jackson 19-7, Huston edged Barrett Williams 10-8, and Richards held off Daniel Gothard, 4-1. The Colonels added three more consecutive wins at 113-pounds, 120-pounds, and 126-pounds. Devin Garrett of Cass pinned Dunwoody’s Luke Pankey in the first period, followed by a 10-2 Tyler Pilcher win over Brannon Anthony and Cass’ Cody Mauldin beat Nestor Foley 12-6. Hunter Quinn (138) pinned Jahmarey Sterling in the first round for another Colonels’ win before Jaylen Callahan (145) edged Dunwoody’s Max Tuch, 3-2, and Khalil Farmer (152) defeated Tygershom Johnson, 8-1. With the match victory secured, Cass forfeited at 170-pounds and 182-pounds. Cass head coach D.L. Koontz said he was pleased with his team’s effort. “Overall, the boys wrestled well today,” noted Koontz. “They pushed for bonus points where they could and some of our other guys used the matches to help work off some weight for tomorrow morning’s weigh-ins.” “We have Clarke Central tomorrow morning,” added Koontz, “and they will be a really tough opponent.” Quarterfinal winners Friday morning will advance to the state semifinals Friday afternoon at 3pm. The state duals championship continues at the Macon Centreplex through Saturday. The state championship matches for all classifications are scheduled for 3pm Saturday.

The Woodland Wildcats’ and Cass Colonels’ wrestling teams open competition in the Class AAAAA GHSA State Dual Wrestling Championship Thursday at the Macon Centreplex. Woodland won the Area 7AAAAA championship last week and Cass was runner-up in the same tournament to qualify for the state tournament. The Wildcats — seeded second at the state championship — have been state runner up each of the last two years. Cass is the No. 5 seed in this year’s state tournament. Camden County is the defending Class AAAAA champion and is the number one seed again this year. Other favorites, based on seeding, include No. 3 Allatoona and No. 4 Clarke Central. Woodland will face Effingham County in the first round Thursday afternoon. Cass wrestles Dunwoody in the first round. Cartersville High School's appeal of their region assignment for the 2016-2020 school years was denied Wednesday by the full GHSA Executive Committee. Cartersville and two other schools requested a transfer from one region to another for travel reasons. All three were denied. The vote on the final reclassification was not nearly unanimous, because a "rider" was added regarding single-gender schools, in particular Riverside Military Academy. That move apparently led to a number of "no" votes, but a final version of reclassification was eventually approved. In the past, each reclassification cycle has been for two school years. The cycle approved Wednesday is for the next four years. Back in early December, GHSA placed schools in regions for the next cycle. The reclassification committee placed Cartersville High School in Region 5-AAAA with Cedartown, Central-Carroll, Chapel Hill, LaGrange, Sandy Creek, and Troup. Cartersville appealed that placement and asked to be moved back to a region similar to their current (2014-16) placement with Gilmer, Heritage-Catoosa, Lafayette, Northwest Whitfield, Pickens, Ridgeland, and Southeast Whitfield. The original appeal by Cartersville was denied by the Reclassification Committee December 8. Cartersville's final appeal Wednesday was to the full GHSA Executive Committee.

EXCEL CHRISTIAN GIRLS 44, GORDON CENTRAL 33 The Lady Eagles received 11 points each from Whitney Harris and Rylie Boston to pick up a non-region win over Gordon Central Tuesday night. ECA led at all quarter stops, but led by only one heading into the fourth quarter, 31-30. Brighton McCollum and Anna Lane Hattaway both scored seven points for Excel, followed by Lindsey Mauldin with six and Kalli Beth Scheff with two. Gordon Central was led by Olivia Fleming with eight points and Cailey Martin’s six. The Excel girls evened their season mark at 8-8 overall. The Lady Eagles travel to Dalton Friday to face Christian Heritage and play at Walker Saturday. EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 50, GORDON CENTRAL 39 Darius Thrower notched 16 points, Chris Hale 13, and Caleb West 11 as the Eagles won a non-region game over Gordon Central Tuesday night. Jaylon Pugh scored 13 points, Cortney Cooley 12, and T.J. Horton 10 for Cartersville. Cartersville (10-4 overall) also improved to 6-1 in region play. Markeron Jones and C.J. Shackleford led the Panthers (3-12 overall, 1-6 in 7AAAA) with 13 and 8 points, respectively. Woodland managed only four points in both the first and third quarters. River Ridge (7-11, 3-3 in 7AAAAA) led 23-14 at halftime and 35-18 after three quarters. Camden Pruitt and Ansley Lathem led the Lady Knights with a dozen points each. Gabby Bradley scored 17 for Woodland and Mikayla Richardson tallied 10. Erykah Pender scored six and Hayley Roberson three for the Lady Cats. With the loss, Woodland falls to 4-13 overall and 0-6 in region play. The Lady Wildcats play at Cass Friday. CEDARTOWN GIRLS 43, CASS 41 Esmeralda Thomas scored a game-high 27 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Colonels lost a non-region matchup at Cedartown Tuesday night, 43-41. Cass led 14-11 after one quarter, but Cedartown (6-7) took over the lead in the second period to lead by three at the break, 23-20. Tia Covington led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points, followed by Tamera Beeman and Brittany Goss with 8 and 7 points, respectively. Jana Morning added six points for the Lady Colonels. Cass (9-8) will return to Region 7AAAAA play Friday at home when they host county rival Woodland. The Lady Colonels play at Adairsville Saturday at 6pm. CEDARTOWN BOYS 58, CASS 56 It went down to the wire with the Colonels having a chance late, but Cedartown held off visiting Cass Tuesday night in a non-region matchup, 58-56. Cass led 20-15 after one quarter, but the Bulldogs rallied to take a 33-27 lead into the halftime locker room. Mike Sims finished with 22 points for Cass. C.J. Bennett followed with 17. Ashton Burley 6, Ian Whittington 4, Matt Mundy 4, and Ed Curtis 3 rounded out the Colonels’ scoring. Chris Goss led three Bulldogs in double figures with 13 points. Tyrell Pace and Trevon Wofford followed with 12 and 10. Cedartown improved to 4-9 with the victory. The Colonels (6-10) will look to bounce back Friday when they host county rival Woodland in a Region 7AAAAA contest. Cass also plays at Adairsville Saturday night.

Cartersville High School's sophomore quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, keeps piling up national recognition and awards. Lawrence has earned recognition as the 2015 MaxPreps Medium Schools Player of the Year. The Georgia Class AAAA Offensive Player of the Year led Cartersville to a 15-0 record and a state championship with a 10-0 win over perennial champion Buford. In his sophomore campaign, Lawrence threw for 3,655 yards and 43 touchdowns and already has 6,697 yards passing in his career. He is considered the No. 1 quarterback prospect in the Class of 2018. Woodland defeated Cass to win the Area 7AAAAA wrestlng championship last weekend and advanced to the GHSA Class AAAAA Team Dual Wrestling Championship as the number two overall seed. As Area 7AAAAA runner-up, Cass also qualified for the state tournament. The Colonels defeated Rome and Cambridge to reach the area championship match against Woodland. The Wildcats defeated Sequoyah and Creekview before the finals match with Cass. Woodland opens the state tournament Thursday against Effingham County. Dunwoody is the Thursday first round opponent for Cass. Camden County, the defending state champion in Class AAAAA, is the top seed. The event is Thursday through Saturday at the Macon Centreplex.
