Cauy Williams and Grant Robinson drove in a pair of runs each as Woodland opened the 2016 baseball season with an 8-4 win at Pepperell. Williams and Robinson both drove in runs with singles in the fifth inning and both added RBI doubles in the sixth. The Wildcats trailed 4-1 going to the top of the fifth, but scored four in the fifth and three in the sixth for the come-from-behind win. Pepperell scored two runs in the third and fourth innings to grab the early lead. Both teams totaled ten hits in the contest. Woodland’s Rodopho Romo picked up the pitching victory by working the final 3 and 1/3 innings in relief of Grayson Bagwell. Romo worked a scoreless stint, scattered three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Bagwell (3.2 IP, 7H, 4R, 2ER, 1BB, 6K) held the Dragons scoreless through his first two innings with no hits and his lone base on balls. Along with the offensive production by Williams and Robinson of the Wildcats, Jacob Frye had a pair of hits. Garett Cornett, Mitchell Taylor, Hunter Reaid, and Brandon Allen added one hit each. SMYRNA, Ga. – The Chattahoochee Tech Golden Eagles carried a lead deep into the second half against one-loss Georgia Highlands on Wednesday at the Smyrna Community Center but could not hold on against the GCAA leader and nation’s No. 2 team. Chattahoochee Tech’s 91-85 loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 20-9 overall and 7-8 in league play. The Golden Eagles opened up a 10-point, 39-29 lead in the final minutes of the first half by holding the Chargers to 12-of-37 shooting and going 4-of-9 from three. Chatt Tech stayed hot into the second period, pushing the biggest lead of the game for either team up to 17 points three minutes in. But Georgia Highlands methodically cut into the lead using pressure defense and took a 77-76 lead with three minutes remaining. The Chargers shot 22-of-30 from the free-throw line in the second half and won the turnover battle 29-20 for the game. Chatt Tech won the rebounding battle 47-41 with 19 offensive boards. The Golden Eagles had four players in double-figures, with sophomore guard A.J. Mosby (Cartersville) leading the way with 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting to go with three assists and five steals. Ryan Davis (16 points, 5-of-11 shooting, 3 rebs, 3 asts, 2 stls) and Keith Ray (16 points, 7-of-14 shooting, 2-of-6 3P, 8 rebs, 4 asts) also had efficient shooting nights. Davis (Cartersville) scored 11 in the first half, and Ray (Hillgrove) poured in 14 points in the second to tie for high scorer in the period with Highlands’ Doniel Dean (game-high 21 points). Mosby and Davis each saw 37 minutes of action. Trevin Steede (Wheeler) came off the bench to contribute 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 5-of-8 shooting from the free-throw line with three rebounds and three assists. Arthur Bennett III (McEachern) was 4-of-6 from the field with eight points, nine rebounds and a block. Jordan Oliver (Rabun County) had seven points and seven rebounds, and Corey Tobin (Cartersville) had five points, three rebounds and two steals. The Golden Eagles will play their final regular-season games at home in Smyrna on Sunday against Atlanta Metro at 4:30pm. With Wednesday’s loss, the Golden Eagles are tied for fourth place in the nine-team GCAA with Sunday’s opponent, Atlanta Metro.

Daniel Gooden hit a pair of homeruns and the Chargers totaled 14 hits as Georgia Highlands defeated Cleveland State CC (TN) 12-2 Wednesday. Nine of Highlands’ hits were for extra bases. Cleveland State tied the game 2-2 heading to the bottom of the third and GHC took control with four runs in the third and six in the fifth. Georgia Highlands took the lead in the third inning on a solo shot by Zach McCrum, then tacked on three more runs on RBI singles by Andrew Cooley and Seth Little and an RBI double by Brandon Bell. The Chargers fifth inning outburst came on an RBI single by Bell, a two-run double by Tristan Roberts, an RBI double by McCrum, and a two-run homer by Gooden. Casey Collins (5 IP, 2H, 1ER, 3BB, 6K) got the pitching victory for GHC. Nick Constan and Tanner Thomson each worked a scoreless inning for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (6-4) hosts a pair of games Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers play Lincoln Trail CC at 1pm and St. Louis CC at 3:30pm.

Cass pitchers Jake Collum, Cody Johnson, and Evan Hinton combined to limit Chattahoochee to only one run on four hits as the Colonels defeated the Class 6A Cougars, 2-1, to open the 2016 season Wednesday night. Johnson (3.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 4K, 3BB) was credited with the pitching win after the starter, Collum was lifted in the second inning. Collum yielded no runs and no hits with a pair of strikeouts, but walked four. Hinton (2.0 IP, 3H, 0ER, 3K) picked up a save by closing out the final two frames on the mound. After four scoreless innings, Chattahoochee took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Cass responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and then Hinton made the lead stand up. “I’m pleased with the way our kids competed,” said Cass coach Adam Williams. “That was a really good left handed pitcher we faced tonight and we hung on and found a way to win.” Collum singled to right field to start the Colonels’ fifth, but was picked off at first. The with one out, Tyler Hendon walked and Hinton singled with a swinging bunt down the third baseline to put runners on first and second base. A wild pitch allowed the two baserunners to move up to second and third and then a strikeout of Brett Gaddy ultimately resulted in two runs. The Chattahoochee catcher had to throw to first to retire Gaddy on a dropped third strike allowing Collins to score on the play. When Hinton threatened the plate behind Collins, the Cougars’ first baseman made a throwing error and Hinton scored the go-ahead run on the same play. Jordan Reed had a pair of hits for Cass. Gaddy, Collum, and Hinton had the other Colonel hits. “Chattahoochee has a good club and we battled through a close ball game. That’s the kind of close games we will have to win in our region,” concluded Williams. Cass (1-0) plays at Adairsville Monday in a 5:30pm start. A game scheduled with Whitefield Academy for Thursday has been cancelled.

ST. PIUS X BOYS 63, CARTERSVILLE 46 After winning the Region 7-AAAA championship last weekend, the Cartersville boys basketball team saw their season come to an end Wednesday night at the Storm Center with an opening round state tournament loss to St. Pius X, 63-46. The Canes’ Cortney Cooley hit a three point field goal to close out the first quarter and bring Cartersville even with the visiting Golden Lions after eight minutes, 16-16. St. Pius, the fourth-seed from Region 6-AAAA, used full court pressure and a hounding defense along with good ball movement and quality shooting to outscore the Canes 17-7 in the second quarter. Carson Seramur and Kerney Lane made back-to-back three-pointers that put SPX up 26-18 midway through the second quarter. Later, a basket by Chandler Parks extended the Golden Lions lead to 30-20. Jaylon Pugh sank a free throw for Cartersville to cut the St. Pius lead to seven, but Seramur hit another three-pointer to give the Lions a 33-23 advantage at the intermission on 50 percent shooting for the half. The Canes were limited to 26 percent shooting in the first sixteen minutes. The Golden Lions pushed their lead to 38-27 midway through the third quarter. The Canes’ Trase Fezzia knocked down a three-pointer near the end of the period to cut the St. Pius lead to 40-33, but another Seramur three-pointer gave the Lions an eleven point lead after three quarters, 44-33. Senior Cade Archer nailed a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter scoring for Cartersville, but St. Pius responded with ten unanswered points to extend their lead to 54-36 with just under four minutes remaining and the Lions cruised to victory from there. Pugh led Cartersville with 11 points and seven rebounds. Seramur and Lane led the Golden Lions with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Merrill scored nine. St. Pius X improved to 23-6 and advanced to play a second round state tournament game at the Perry/Thomson winner Saturday night. The Canes’ season comes to a close with a 21-7 record. The Adairsville Lady Tigers’ season came to a close Tuesday night in Oakwood with a 73-48 loss to the Region 7-AAA champion West Hall Lady Spartans in the first round of the Class AAA state tournament. The loss brings a "Cinderella story" post-season, tournament run to an end for Coach Lee Whitaker's Lady Tigers who qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 1958. West Hall (20-8) advances to the Round of 16 Friday where they will host Washington County — a 65-46 winner Tuesday night over Jackson. Adairsville concludes the 2015-16 campaign with a 13-17 record. Georgia Highlands slipped to 5-4 on the year after being swept in a three-game series this past weekend by visiting Walters State (TN). The Patriots won 11-7 Friday night and then took a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 7-5 and 5-3. Walters State improved to 6-3 on the season. In Saturday’s first game, the Chargers jumped on top, 3-1, but the visiting Senators put up single runs in the third through fifth frames to regain the lead. Highlands tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but Walters State scored twice in the sixth and added another run in the seventh for a 7-5 decision. Brandon Bell had three hits for GHC. Zach McCrum drove in three runs on a pair of hits (a double and a HR) and Brandon Etheridge had two hits for the Chargers. In Saturday’s second game, the Chargers took a 3-2 lead to the top of the seventh inning before the Senators put up three runs in the final frame to win 5-3. Brandon Bell hit a solo shot in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth to account for all three Georgia Highlands’ RBI. The Chargers host Cleveland State (TN) Wednesday at 3pm at LakePoint and will host Lincoln Trail CC and St. Louis CC Saturday, at 1pm and 3:30pm.
