  • Wildcats even series with Rome; Colonels shutout by North Oconee

    WOODLAND 5, ROME 2 Garett Pope and Grayson Bagwell combined for a three-hitter to pave the way for a Woodland 5-2 sub-region win at Rome Wednesday night. The Wildcats scored three runs in the first two innings and added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh after the Wolves had narrowed the lead to 3-1. Four of Woodland’s nine hits went for extra bases. Jacob Frye led the Wildcats’ attack with a 3-for-4 night. He scored twice and drove in a run on a triple and a pair of singles. Hunter Reaid, Brandon Allen (triple), and Mitchell Taylor each finished with a hit and one RBI. Grant Robinson and Trent Harrison both smacked doubles. Pope (5.1 IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 2K) picked up the pitching victory for Woodland. Bagwell (1.2 IP, 2H, 1ER, 3BB, 1K) earned a save. Woodland (2-6 overall, 1-4 in 7-AAAAA-A) entertains Rome (5-2, 1-1) Friday in the rubber game of the sub-region series at 6pm. NORTH OCONEE 4, CASS 0 The Cass bats were stymied again Wednesday night at LakePoint Park in Emerson as the Colonels lost a non-region game to North Oconee, 4-0. Cass managed only two hits in the contest, one night after going hitless against Griffin. North Oconee (3-5) scored a pair of runs in the second and added single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Titans pounded out 11 hits. North Oconee sophomore southpaw, Brad Stephenson, allowed only two hits and three walks in 6-2/3 innings. He struck out five. Josh Farmer recorded the final out for the Titans in the seventh inning. Evan Hinton (6 IP, 11H, 4R, 2ER, 1BB, 5K) suffered the complete game pitching loss for the Colonels. Cody Johnson singled in the third inning and Nathan Smith doubled in the seventh inning for the only Cass hits. Cass (3-4) plays a three-game, sub-region series with Rome next week. Monday and Friday the games are at Legion Field in Rome. Wednesday’s game will be at Cass. All three start times are 5:55pm.

  • Cass soccer teams split matches at Paulding Co.

    The Cass soccer teams split matches at Paulding County Wednesday night in Dallas. The girls lost to the Lady Patriots 8-0 and the Colonels defeated the Patriots, 2-0. Jose Quinonez gave the Colonels a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute and Gavin Smith made it 2-0 in the 70th minute. Both goals were unassisted. With the road victory, the Colonels improved to 4-1-1 for the season. The Patriots are now 2-6-1. The Paulding girls scored four goals in each half during their win over the visiting Lady Colonels. The Lady Patriots moved to 8-0 on the season. The Lady Colonels slipped to a 2-5-1 season mark. The Cass teams play at region rival Sequoyah Friday.

  • Wildcats 5th of 20 teams at Woodstock Invitational

    The Woodland boys and girls track teams competed in the Wolverine Invitational at Woodstock High School Saturday. The boys placed 5th out of 20 teams and the girls finished 13th. First place finishers for the boys were: Jamai Smith in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.14 seconds and Thomas Jolly in the Pole Vault with a vault of 12 feet even. Also scoring in the meet: Shamus Thomas in the 100 meter dash, Jamai Smith in the 200 meter dash, Trever Knowles in the high jump, the 4 by 100m relay, 4 by 400m relay, and the 4 by 800m relay. Top finishers and scoring for the girls team were: Karson Norris in the high jump, Cheyenne Spinks, and Lindsay Scifers in the 3200 meter run, Skylar Chappell in the discus throw, Chaila Reliford in the long jump, Avery Mayweather in the shot put, and the 4 by 800 meter relay.

  • Canes play in national event this week at LakePoint

    The Cartersville Hurricanes baseball team opens play in the annual Perfect Game High School Showdown at LakePoint in Emerson Thursday against the Montverde Academy (FL) Eagles at 3:35pm on Field 15. Some of the top high school baseball programs in the nation will participate in the event that runs through Saturday at LakePoint. Parkview (GA) is the defending champion and the Panthers are back to defend their 2015 title. Title top contenders include: 3rd-ranked Oxford (Miss) HS (5-1), 7th-ranked Buford (Ga.) HS (3-1), 20th-ranked Gulliver Prep (Miami, Fla.) HS (8-2) and the Canes who are ranked No. 26. Other top programs in the tournament include: Ballard HS (Louisville, KY); Hillgrove HS (Powder Springs, GA); Houston Co. HS (Warner Robins, GA); IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL); Magnolia Heights (Senatobia, MS); McEachern HS (Powder Springs, GA); Montverde Academy (Montverde, FL); Mountain View HS (Lawrenceville, GA); and Sparkman HS (Harvest, AL).   • Tigers win at LFO in PK shootout.

    The Adairsville boys soccer team won in dramatic style Tuesday night, defeating Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on the road in a penalty kicks shootout. The game was a scoreless draw through regulation time and two five minute overtimes, sending the region contest to a penalty kicks tie-breaker. Danny Carillo, Jesus Garcia, and Salvador Grimaldo Jr., all converted on their PK shootout attempts for the Tigers to escape with a 3-2 win. "B.J. Hardman had a tremendous game in goal," said Adairsville coach Kelly Abernathy. Hardman made eight saves in regulation and overtime, plus three dramatic saves in the shootout. "The core of the defense had an outstanding game as well," noted Abernathy. "Gideon Perez, Austin Barry, Ari Longmore, and Joseph Pacheco played most of the game, but we had several subs that solidified the defense throughout the night." Adairsville (6-1 overall, 1-0 in Region 6AAA) took 20 shots on goal in regulation and overtime. "The offense deserves credit too," added Abernathy. "We were productive, offensively, and controlled play and possession for most of the game." The Tigers entertain Coahulla Creek Thursday night (March 10).

  • Davis comes up big for Lady Canes; Collum's hat trick leads Adairsville

    Emily Collum scored a hat trick to lead the undefeated Adairsville Lady Tigers to victory and Cartersville's Chloe Davis scored one goal in regulation and converted on a PK kick after regulation as both local girls' soccer teams won important region games Tuesday night. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, LFO 0 The Adairsville Lady Tigers shutout Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 6-0 on the road Tuesday night behind three goals by Emily Collum. Collum put Adairsville ahead 3-0 at halftime with goals in the 10th minute (assist from Kaitlyn Webster), 21st minute (assist by Aimee Pacheco), and 28th minute (assist from Hannah Worley). In the second half, Mac Stehenson scored in the 44th minute off a corner kick from Katie Lawhorn to make the score 4-0. Pacheco scored in the 58th minute for a 5-0 lead and Haley Pittman scored a goal in the 62nd minute for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (7-0 overall, 1-0 in Region 6AAA) hosts Coahulla Creek on Thursday at 5:30pm. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 1 The Lady Canes went to overtime and penalty kicks Tuesday night before an outcome was reached, but Cartersville escaped with an important 2-1 Region 7-AAAA victory. Chloe Davis scored the Lady Canes’ goal in regulation off an assist from Marissa Mowry in the game’s 50th minute, but Southeast tied it with a goal in the waining minutes of regulation. With PKs knotted at 2-2, Davis converted to give the Lady Canes a 3-2 advantage on PKs and Cartersville keeper Abby Robinson stopped a pair of attempts to secure the region win. Cartersville (5-1 overall, 2-0 in 7-AAAA) hosts Pickens Friday (March 11) at 5:30pm.

  • Chargers split twin bill Tuesday

    Georgia Highlands College split a doubleheader with Wallace State-Hanceville CC Tuesday at LakePoint Park in Emerson winning the nightcap 6-3, but falling in the opener, 4-2. Zach McCrum drove home Brandon Etheridge and Trenton Nutter with a two-run double in the sixth inning to lift the Chargers to the second game victory. Nick Constan picked up the pitching win for GHC in 4 and 2/3 innings. He struck out six, walked five, and surrendered four hits. The Chargers carried a 3-1 lead to the sixth, but WSHCC tied the game with a pair of runs. Following McCrum’s go-ahead double, Devin Bilardello reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Drew Davis for an insurance run and a 6-3 advantage. Will Griffin picked up a save by recording the final five outs. He yielded no hits or runs on two walks and struck out a pair. In Game 1, the Chargers led 2-1 through five innings only to lose 4-2. Andrew Plunkett put Wallace State-Hanceville ahead in the sixth with a two-run double. The visitors added another run in the frame, then held off Georgia Highlands for the win. The Chargers managed only three hits. One each by McCrum, Daniel Gooden, and Jonathan White. Gooden and White had one RBI each. Zack Moon pitched 3 and 2/3 innings in relief to earn the win on the mound. He allowed no runs or hits, struck out three, and walked one. McCrum (5 IP, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (14-10) plays Central Alabama CC Friday and Triton CC (IL) Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson.

  • Cass bats silenced in loss to Griffin

    A pair of Griffin pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter Tuesday night as the Bears defeated the Cass Colonels at LakePoint Park in Emerson, 11-1. Kyle Turner (4 IP, 0H, 0R, 4K, 2BB) and Terry Fuller (2 IP, 1R, 2K, 2BB) kept the Cass hitters off stride, walked four, and struck out six for victory. Griffin took a 5-0 lead through two innings, added two more in the fifth, and four in the sixth on eight hits. Although the Colonels were held hitless, two walks, an infield error, and a passed ball led to a Cass run in the bottom of the fifth. Cody Johnson (2 IP, 5H, 5ER, 2BB) started on the mound for the Colonels and took the pitching loss. Austin Pruett (3 IP, 1H, 2ER, 3K, 1BB), Steven Spell (0.1 IP, 2H, 3ER, 2BB), and Jordan Reed (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) also pitched in the loss. Griffin improved to 7-1 with the non-region win. Cass (3-3) plays North Oconee Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30pm.

  • Mustangs score late to top Adairsville

    Kennesaw Mountain scored five runs over their final two innings to defeat the Adairsville Tigers in come-from-behind fashion Tuesday night at LakePoint in Emerson. The Tigers scored a single run in the fourth, but the Mustangs got four in the fifth and added another run in the sixth for the 5-1 non-region win. Kennesaw Mountain starting pitcher, Matt Cole, went the distance for the win. He scattered three Tigers’ hits in seven innings of work, struck out 10, and walked two. Landon Howren and Lane Griffith singled for Adairsville. Hayden Morrow doubled. The Tigers used four pitchers in the contest. Kyler Pelfrey (2 IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB) and Sam Seaman (2 IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB) both worked a pair of shutout innings. Noah O’Kelley (1 IP, 4ER, 5H, 2BB, 2K) was saddled with the pitching loss. Orry Carter (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1K) also pitched for Adairsville. Ivan Johnson (RBI) and Patrick Martin (HR, RBI) had two hits each to lead the Mustangs. Will Corey and Justin Phillips also drove in runs for Kennesaw Mountain. Adairsville opens Region 6-AAA play at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday at 5:55pm.

  • Cass tennis teams edged by River Ridge

    The Cass tennis teams were both edged 3-2 by visiting 7-AAAAA-A sub-region opponent, River Ridge, Tuesday at Hamilton Crossing Park. In the girls’ match, Cass took both the No. 1 singles and doubles lines. Ryleigh Lanham won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and the Lady Colonels’ duo of Emma Wickenheiser/Kaira Bowen won at the No. 1 doubles line, 6-0, 6-2. In the boys’ match, Dalton Jackson and Eric Dunlap won singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 lines. Jackson won in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Dunlap won 7-5, 6-0. Cass travels to Rome Thursday (March 10) and will play in the Woodland Invitational Friday and Saturday (March 11-12).

  • CPRD to offer Open League basketball beginning in April

    The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department is offering an Open League for basketball this Spring. The games will be played at the Aubrey Street Gym Tuesday and Wednesdays after 7pm.     In this 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' update, we update results from local athletes contributing at the college level in basketball, track and field, wrestling, and tennis. The 2015-16 basketball season is now over for most of the local collegiate players, although a few continue in tournament play. Track and Field results are limited, since most programs are transitioning over the past week and next week from their indoor seasons to the outdoor season. NOTE: The updates for local softball and baseball athletes for the Week ending March 6 appeared in an article published March 7. WRESTLING SAMMY ROSARIO — Cumberland University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . lost both matches at the NAIA National Championships in Topeka, KS wrestling in the 133 pound division. The Cumberland team finished 19th at the national tournament. Rosario (16-9) was one of seven national qualifiers on his team that tied for the Mid-South Conference Championship, a first ever for the school. TRACK AND FIELD ROGER HERRERA — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . distance runner, ran 16th of 35 competitors (16:52.36) in the 5,000 meter run at the Victor Ice Breaker Duals at Berry College March 5. Reinhardt finished second as a team in the event behind Shorter University. The Eagles compete next at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, March 18-19. TROY HICKOM — Clayton State (Jr., Cartersville HS) . . . distance runner, ran second of thirteen competitors (16:19.51) in the 5,000 meters at the Tiger Orange and Blue Classic hosted by Savannah State University March 5. Next for the Lakers is the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, March 18-19. TENNIS PEYTON GOLHOFFER — Ball State (Fr., Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville resident) . . . lost her singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, playing at the No. 1 line as the Lady Cardinals defeated University of Cincinnati, 4-3. She and No. 3 line doubles partner, Audrey Berger, also fell, 6-3. Ball State is 8-2 in matches this season and travels to Orlando March 8-18 for matches with South Dakota, Norfolk State, James Madison, and Wright State. SOMALIA LEWIS — Emmanuel College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . member of the Lady Lions tennis program that is 3-10 overall and 1-4 in Conference Carolinas matches. (Note: Individual results are not published by the Emmanuel tennis program.) Next for Emmanuel is a match at University of North Georgia against Illinois-Springfield March 17, at Belmont Abbey March 19, and at N.C. Central March 20. BASKETBALL SYDNEY BOYD — Brewton-Parker College (Fr., Woodland HS) . . . played in 24 games for the Barons in 2015-16, starting nine games. She averaged four points per game in just over nine minutes per game. She collected 1.5 rebounds per game, made 17 steals, and had 12 assists. BPC was 7-21 overall and finished 3-15 in the Southern States Athletic Conference. MARISSA DUBOSE — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Woodland HS) . . . played in 27 games for the Cardinal averaging 1.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and just under one assist per game. She also had nine blocks and seven steals for the season. Gadsden State had a 13-15 overall record and was 5-5 in the Alabama Community College Conference. ASHLEY HUSKINS — University of the Cumberlands (Fr., Cass HS) . . . played in 24 games, starting twice. She averaged 4.5 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and just under one assist per game. Huskins blocked eight shots and made 11 steals. The Lady Patriots’s season ended with a 61-50 Mid-South Conference quarterfinal tournament loss to 6th-ranked Campbellsville University March 3 in Frankfort, KY. U of C was 11-16 overall this season and 2-12 in the Mid-South Conference. KAELYN IRBY — Gadsden State CC (Soph. Cartersville HS) . . . averaged 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 27 games. She totaled 62 steals and five blocks on the season. The Cardinal finished 13-15 overall and third in the Alabama Community College Conference North Division with a 5-5 record. STEPHANIE KUHRT — Reinhardt University (Soph., Adairsville HS) . . . saw action in four games for the Eagles. She scored 2.3 points per game, and just under one assist and steal per game played. RU lost in the opening round of the AAC tournament to Columbia (SC) College. The Lady Eaglers finished 13-19 overall and 9-11 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. MORGAN JONES — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . played in 26 games for GSCC, averaging 4.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game. She completed the season with 12 assists, five steals, and five blocked shots. Gadsden State was 13-15 overall and 5-5 in the ACCC North Division. MAYA JONES — Gadsden State CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . was credited with 22 games played and averaged just under one point and rebound per game. She shot better than 45 percent from the floor and over 85 percent from the free throw line in limited minutes. Gadsden State was 13-15 overall and 5-5 in the ACCC North Division. RYAN DAVIS — Chattahoochee Tech CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . scored 13.2 points per game on 50.9 percent shooting from the floor. He also averaged 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game for the Golden Eagles logging better than 30 minutes per game. Davis made 64 steals and blocked five shots during the season. CTCC lost to Georgia Highlands CC in the GCAA semifinals March 4 to finish the year 22-10. They were 8-8 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. A.J. MOSBY — Chattahoochee Tech CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . averaged 18.7 points per game, shot over 52 percent from the floor, collected 4.6 rebounds per game and dealt 3.9 assists in 31 games played. He was a first-team, all-league selection for the season. Mosby shot 39 percent from behind the three-point arc and 78 percent from the charity stripe. He also had 76 steals during the season. CTCC lost to Georgia Highlands CC in the GCAA semifinals March 4 to finish the year 22-10. They were 8-8 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanual College (Jr., Excel Christian Academy) . . . scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds in a 95-66 home victory over Bob Jones University March 1. In 26 games played and 22 starts, Robinson is averaging 8.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. The Lions are 22-5 overall and were 16-4 in Conference Carolinas. The Lions, who were not eligible for the conference or NCAA post-season due to reclassification to NCAA D-II, will play in the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association tournament beginning March 11. Emmanual opens with Columbia International in the NCCAA South Regionals at Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC. ADRIAN RODGERS — Southern University (Sr., Cartersville, GA resident; Centennial HS; Maine Central Prep) . . . scored 25 points with nine rebounds, an assist, and two steals in an 84-79 win over Texas Southern March 3 . . . totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists in a 79-71 home loss to Prarie View A&M March 5. . . Rodgers has started all 31 games this season for the 19-12 Jaguars. He is averaging 17.6 points per game and 5.4 rebounds. He has 21 steals this season and has blocked three shots. The Jags are 11-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and play Alabama State in the conference tournament quarterfinals March 10 at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX. COREY TOBIN — Chattahoochee Tech CC (Soph., Cartersville HS) . . . scored eight points per game, grabbed 3.9 rebounds per game, and averaged three assists in 31 games played for the Golden Eagles. Tobin shot over 40 percent from behind the three-point line and was better than 76 percent from the free throw line. He also made 44 steals during the season. Chattahoochee Tech lost to Georgia Highlands CC in the GCAA semifinals March 4 to finish the year 22-10. They were 8-8 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. RUDY WINTERS — Dalton State College (Soph., Excel Christian Academy) . . . scored four points, had two assists, two rebounds, and one steal in a conference tournament loss to Auburn-Montgomery March 3. Winters played in 19 games and averaged 12 points per game on 47 percent shooting. He averaged 2.8 rebounds and just under one assist and steal per game.
