A second game, scheduled with Stratford Academy on the road trip, was rained out.

Adairsville volleyball split four matches on Saturday (Aug. 29). The Lady Tigers defeated Pickens in straight sets, but lost to Fannin County in the morning rounds. They then defeated Pickens, but fell to Calhoun in the afternoon matches. The Lady Tigers (5-8, 1-2 in Area) were playing in the Rally at the Ridge Invitational in Blue Ridge hosted by Fannin County High School. Adairsville defeated Pickens in a pair of close games 25-21, 25-23. The loss to Fannin County was by scores of 25-9, 25-14. The Lady Tigers defeated Lumpkin County 25-23,11-25 and 15-6, but lost their tournament finale' to Calhoun. Cass volleyball lost volleyball matches this week to North Cobb Christian and Woodland on Thursday (Aug. 27) and fell to Coosa on Saturday. All three losses were in straight sets, 2-0. North Cobb Christian defeated Cass 25-6, 25-7. Woodland topped the Lady Colonels 25-23, 25-17 and Coosa defeated Cass at the Coosa Invitational at Shorter University, 25-12, 25-15. Results from the Lady Colonels’ match with LaFayette on Saturday will be updated in this article when they become available. In addition to Woodland’s victory over Cass, the Lady Cats also had a Coosa Invitational loss to North Cobb Christian 25-20, 25-14. Woodland is now 9-9 on the season.

The Woodland cross country teams ran Saturday (Aug. 29) in the Saucony Battle of Atlanta at Nash Farms Battlefield in Hampton, GA. The Lady Wildcats ran 22nd of 44 participating teams with a team average time of 22:59. Marist won the girls championship with 82 points and an average time of 20:10. They were followed by Etowah (128, 20:36), Hebron Christian (190, 21:05), Parkview (209, 21:09) and McIntosh (233, 21:20). Nicole Fegans of Landmark Christian won the girls’ race in 18:53. Lindsay Scifers (photo) led the Woodland runners with a 32nd place finish in 20:53. She was followed by teammates Cheyenne Spinks (78th, 21:57), Casey Bolan (157th, 23:39), Elizabeth Roberson (162nd, 23:48), Makenna Eskew (190th, 24:39), Ally Landrum (239th, 26:20), and McKaylie Bowles (274th, 27:30). Mill Creek won the boys’ title with 85 points and an average time of 16:46. They were followed by Marist (120, 16:55), St. Pius X (130, 17:03), Auburn, AL (157, 17:07), and Whitewater (185, 17:16). Frank Pittman of Marist won the boys' race in 15:53. The Woodland boys’ team placed 29th of 51 teams with an average time of 19:15. The Wildcats were led by Jonathan Holloway. He placed 108th with a time of 18:28 ahead of teammates Jacob Glitz (157th, 19:00), Julian Rocket (175th, 19:16), Dioney Ochoa (193rd, 19:38), Dustin Kiel (205th, 19:52), Alex Chavez (215th, 19:58), and Levi Brandenburg (264th, 20:50). The Woodland harriers host the Run at the Rock Saturday, September 12 beginning at 9am.

Cartersville softball split a pair of games Friday and improved to 6-6 on the year as the Lady Hurricanes opened play in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. Cartersville defeated North Cobb 5-4, but lost to Lowndes 14-1. The Lady Canes fell behind early to North Cobb, but regained the lead with a run in the second inning and two more in the third. North Cobb added single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to regain the lead, 4-3, but the Hurricanes scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to escape with a 5-4 win. Tara Mathis picked up the pitching victory in the circle for the ‘Canes. She allowed only one earned run on seven hits. She walked one and struck out two. Kennedy Bailey had three hits and an RBI at the plate for Cartersville. Megan Morneau added a pair of hits and an RBI. Macee Cole (RBI), Mathis, Paris Poston, Kayla Stepheson, and Jolea Prokop had one hit each. Lowndes scored seven runs in the first two innings and never looked back on their way to a 14-1 defeat of Cartersville. Senior Haley Fowler blasted a pair of homeruns, including a grand slam to lead the Lady Vikings’ offense. Fowler finished the game with seven RBI. Madison May added three RBI for Lowndes. Paris Poston had a pair of hits, including a double for Cartersville. Madison McKinney drove in a run with a double. Taylor Waits had the Lady Hurricanes’ other base hit. Colbi Ballard took the pitching loss in three and one-third innings of work. Mathis also pitched an inning and two-thirds in relief. Cartersville faces South Cobb and an opponent to be determined on Saturday afternoon’s tournament schedule.

Woodland softball lost their two opening games Friday (Aug. 28) in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. The Lady Wildcats, hosting a portion of the tournament, were edged by Armuchee 1-0 and later lost to Columbus 12-3. Lady Indians senior pitcher, Hannah Murray, tossed a one-hitter for Armuchee in the opener and struck out 14 with only one walk. That performance was almost matched by Woodland’s Lilly Jordan in the circle for the Wildcats. She scattered six hits and gave up only one unearned run with a pair of walks and five strikeouts. Kereston Franklin had the Lady Cats only hit in the fourth inning. She also reached on an error in the first. Armuchee scored the game’s only run in the sixth inning when Karson Fallin drove home Payton Carter with an RBI single. Woodland took a 3-2 lead over Columbus in the third inning, but a five-run fourth by the Lady Blue Devils opened the flood gates on the way to a 12-3 Columbus win. Columbus took a 2-0 lead in the first inning prior to Woodland’s third inning rally. Kylie Knox (photo) and Franklin had hits in the third and both eventually came around to score. Keri Cagle scored after reaching on an error to begin the inning. Watson suffered the pitching loss against Columbus, yielding eight earned runs in five innings. Audrey Morris had the Lady Wildcats’ only other hit in the game. Columbus scored five runs over the last two innings to put the game away. Woodland hosts Day 2 of the tournament Saturday (Aug. 29) with games against Campbell at 8:30am, Northside Columbus at 10:30am, and Darlington at 6:30pm.

The Cass Lady Colonels softball team fell to 2-10 on the season Friday night (Aug 28) with a pair of losses in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash tournament being conducted at Allatoona and other satellite fields across the area. The Lady Colonels' Friday games were played at Stars Mill. Cass dropped a 12-3 decision to sub-region rival River Ridge in Friday’s tournament opener and later lost to South Cobb, 5-1. Cass took a 3-1 lead over the Lady Knights in the first inning, but River Ridge scored three times in the third to take the lead for good. Another run in the fourth and seven over the final two frames put the game away. Sierrah Gani had a pair of hits, including a triple, and scored a run to lead the Lady Colonels’ offense against River Ridge. Sarah Fox has a hit and an RBI and Cat White drove in a run with a sacrifice. Sarah Moore and Hannah Lee had the only other hits for Cass. Moore suffered the pitching loss in the circle going 4 and one-third. White also pitched for Cass. South Cobb took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third and never trailed although the Lady Colonels narrowed the lead to 3-1 in the fourth. Cass managed only three hits. Those came off the bats of Alexia Najarro, Mae Mae McIntyre and White. Moore was credited with the only Cass RBI. Hannah Lee tossed six innings in the loss to the Lady Eagles despite surrendering only one earned run. She walked two and struck out four. Cass continues play in the tournament Saturday (Aug 29) with games at South Paulding High School. The Lady Colonels play the hosts at 9:30am, Ridgeland at 1:30pm, and Camden County at 3:30pm.

Cartersville’s defense stifled Cass and forced six turnovers in both teams season opener Friday at Doug Cochran Stadium en route to an overwhelming 41-0 defeat of the Colonels. There were lots of penalties on both sides and Cartersville turned the ball over a couple of times themselves, but it was the Hurricanes’ defense that remained in control throughout for the shutout. The only scoring play of the first quarter came at 6:52 of the opening stanza on a 14 yard pass from Trevor Lawrence to Terrius Callahan. The extra point kick failed, but Cartersville held a 6-0 lead. In the second period, Trase Fezzia, who finished the game with a pair of interceptions, picked off a Trevor Lowe pass and returned it 12 yards for a score. The first of Jonathan Cruz’s extra point kicks gave Cartersville 13-0 advantage. Lawrence found Miller Forristal for a 17-yard touchdown pass less than three minutes later and those two connected for another score with 2:49 remaining in the half to go up 27-0. The second of those drives included a long run by Tiamon Pennymon and a 45-yard screen pass reception by Pennymon from Lawrence. A Cass fumble at their own 25 set up another Lawrence to Callahan touchdown connection. This time it was a 20-yard touchdown pass with 1:36 left in the second quarter that gave Cartersville a 34-0 lead at the intermission. The only scoring of the second half came late in the third quarter. Xavier Coaxum returned his second interception of the game 61 yards to make it 41-0 with 2:19 remaining in the period. James Darns finished with 63 yards on 11 carries for Cass. Cass (0-1) plays at Coosa next Friday. Cartersville (1-0) hosts North Cobb at Weinman Stadium.

The Adairsville Lady Tigers volleyball team traveled to Armuchee on Thursday, August 27th to take on Calhoun and Armuchee. The Lady Tigers won their first set against Calhoun 25-14, lost the second set 21- 25 and lost a tough one in the third set 20-25 to fall 2-1. Courtney Evans had 3 aces and 1 kill. Aimee Pacheco had 4 aces. Chloe Powell had 2 aces. Mackenzie Stephenson had 2 aces and 4 kills. Sierra Matthews had 2 kills and 3 blocks, and Logan O'Neal had one kill against Calhoun. In the second match against Armuchee, Adairsville won the first and third sets to pull out a 2-1 victory. Set scores were 25-16, 15-25, and 25-23. Sierra Matthews had 3 aces and 1 kill. Mackenzie Stephenson had 2 aces and 2 kills. Courtney Evans had 1 ace. Chloe Powell had 5 kills, and Josie Summerville had 3 kills. The Lady Tigers travel to Blue Ridge this Saturday to compete in the "Rally on the Ridge" Tournament at Fannin County High School.

ADAIRSVILLE 8, LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 5 The Lady Tigers scored twice in the third and six in the sixth for an 8-5 victory at LFO. Baily Robinson drove in the go-ahead runs in the sixth and Loren Harris had four RBI on a pair of hits to lead the Tigers' offense. Hannah Knapp and Haven Isaac also had two hits. Alyssa Hughs scattered seven hits and allowed only 3 earned runs for the pitching victory. She walked three and struck out three. Next week, Adairsville hosts Gordon Central Monday (Aug 31), travels to Coahulla Creek Tuesday (Sep 1), and hosts Calhoun on Thursday (Sep 3). CARTERSVILLE 3, PICKENS 2 Madison McKinney drove in the go-ahead run for Cartersville in the sixth inning as the Lady Purple Hurricanes defeated region foe, Pickens. McKinney finished the contest with 2 RBI. Paris Poston drove in the other Cartersville run. Molly Wilson, Kennedy Bailey, and Colbi Ballard had the other Canes hits. CREEKVIEW 7, CASS 0 Pitcher Bethany Hyde of Creekview struck out eight with no walks and yielded only one hit to shutout the Lady Colonels Thursday night. Cat White had the only hit for Cass -- a second inning single. Creekview scored twice in the bottom of the second, added single runs in the third and fourth, and closed out the scoring with three runs in the fifth inning. Hannah Lee suffered the pitching loss for Cass, but allowed only two earned runs off eight hits and four walks. She struck out two. Cass plays Friday and Saturday in the Allatoona Tournament. The Lady Colonels face River Ridge and South Cobb at Stars Mill Friday (Aug 28) and meet South Paulding, Ridgeland, and Camden County Saturday at South Paulding.

The Excel Christian Academy Lady Eagles' softball team struggled through a tough second inning and lost to Mount Zion Thursday night, 12-5. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Gibson worked all seven innings for Excel and according to coach Eric Harris, "pitched well enough to win." Excel narrowed the difference to 9-5 in the middle innings, but Mount Zion added three more runs in the seventh. The Lady Eagles were led at the plate by Hannah Cauthen, who went 2-for-3 at the plate. Also contributing offensively were Tessa Thornbrough, who was 1-for-1; Whitney Harris, 1-for-2; Xena Enos, 1-for-3; Brighton McCollum, 1-for-3; Lindsey Mauldin, 1-for-4, and Gibson, 1-for-4. The loss dropped Excel’s overall record to 1-5 and 0-2 in region play. Excel plays again on Saturday when the Lady Eagles go to Macon to play in two games. They are scheduled to play Tattnall Square Academy at noon and Stratford Academy at 3 p.m.

The Cartersville Lady Hurricanes volleyball team lost a pair of matches in straight sets Tuesday against Class AAAAAA's Roswell and Kennesaw Mountain. Roswell defeated Cartersville 25-12, 26-24.
