February 12, 2025 Mason Madrid The Cass High School boys’ soccer team kicked off the season Monday night with a 3-1 win at Coahulla Creek in a matchup of two top-ten-ranked teams. The Colonels opened the season as the No. 3 team in Class AAAA and Coahulla Creek is ranked No. 5 in Class AA according to the preseason rankings by ScoreAtlanta. Cass freshman Anthony Diaz made an immediate impact, opening the scoring nine minutes into the match. Eight minutes later, Mason Madrid doubled the lead with a clinical finish from the penalty spot. Diaz struck again three minutes later, putting the Colonels up 3-0 within the first 20 minutes. The score remained unchanged until the Colts converted a penalty with ten minutes remaining.  Cass maintained control after the Coahulla Creek goal for a solid opening night victory. COAHULLA CREEK 3, CASS GIRLS 0 The Cass girls’ soccer team was shut out in its season opener at Coahulla Creek on Monday. The Lady Colts led 2-0 at the intermission and added a third goal in the second half to secure the decision. Cass (0-1) host Rome on Friday in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. ALEXANDER 3, CASS BOYS 0 On Tuesday in Douglasville, the Colonels were blanked by Class 5A Alexander, 3-0.  Following a scoreless first half, the Cougars (2-0) scored three times in the second half to hand Cass a road defeat. Cass (1-1) hosts East Paulding on February 24.

February 12, 2025 The Woodland Wildcats’ baseball team overpowered visiting Rome on Monday night to win their baseball opener, 14-0. The Wildcats scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and added on each frame for a mercy run-rule victory in five innings. Woodland outhit the Wolves eleven to two. Lucas Baker (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 4K) made the pitching start for the Wildcats and collected the win on the mound. Christian Duran (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) and Kallen Reynolds (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 2K) pitched one inning in relief. Alfredo Romo had four hits and one RBI. Zaylen Cochran produced two hits and two RBI. Jake Clowers (double, RBI), Conner Lujan, Baker (RBI), Ben Turcotte (two RBI), and Jonathan Ryan (two RBI) had one hit. Preston Sorrells was credited with one RBI. Woodland (1-0) visits Pickens on Thursday for a 6 p.m. start.

February 11, 2025 The Cartersville boys' and Cass girls' basketball teams secured their spots in the Class AAAA state tournament on Tuesday night at Allatoona High School by winning in the Region 7-4A Tournament.a CARTERSVILLE BOYS 64, CASS 60 Kyron McClendon The Hurricanes completed a three-game season sweep of the Cass boys Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Region 7-AAAA Tournament at Allatoona High School. Close throughout, Cartersville held leads at the end of each period. The Canes led 12-11 after one quarter, 27-23 at halftime, and 46-39 at the end of the third quarter. Kyron McClendon scored 25 points to lead Cartersville. Wyatt Thomason followed with 16. Will Bishop contributed nine points, and Nas Bennett added eight. Xavier Lowe led Cass in the scoring column with 17 points. Dylan Miller finished with 16 points. Parnel Gamble and Jason Brown added eight. The year for the Colonels comes to a close with an 11-15 record. Cartersville (15-10) secures a berth in the region semifinals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Dalton. The win also guarantees a state tournament berth. CASS GIRLS 59, CEDARTOWN 37 Cadie Paez The Lady Colonels built an 11-point lead by halftime, adding to their advantage in the second half for a 59-37 Region 7-AAAA quarterfinal win over Cedartown at Allatoona High School. Cass led 14-9 after one quarter, 33-22 at the intermission, and 49-34 by the end of the third quarter en route to a 22-point win. Cadie Paez led three Lady Colonels in double figures with 14 points. Darianna Sosa finished with 12 points, and Kiana McDaniel contributed 10. KK Evans posted nine points, and Yvonne Ellison added eight for Cass. The season ended for Cedartown with a 10-17 record. Cass (12-13) advanced to the region semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. against top-seeded Cartersville. NORTHWEST WHITFIELD 51, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 41 The Adairsville Lady Tigers had their season end Tuesday night at Heritage High School in Ringgold with a 51-41 loss to Northwest Whitfield in the quarterfinal round of the Region 7-AAA Tournament. The Lady Bruins (15-7) advanced to the semifinals on Friday against host Calhoun at 7 p.m. Adairsville has its season end with an 11-15 record.

February 11, 2025 Hunter Lovett pitched four innings to collect the Colonels' pitching win. He also tripled with two RBI. The Cass Colonels and Adairsville Tigers opened their 2025 baseball slates on Monday. Cass began with a road win at Sprayberry, but Adairsville lost to visiting Pepperell. CASS 13, SPRAYBERRY 7 The Cass Colonels plated one run or more in six of seven innings Monday night and opened the 2025 baseball season with a 13-7 victory at Sprayberry in Marietta. Cass led 8-0 in the middle of the fourth inning and added on five more runs over the final three frames. Nic Wright (double, two RBI), Landon Lamb (RBI), Dustin Wallin (RBI), and Trenton Elario (RBI) had two hits for the Colonels’ offense. Hunter Lovett (triple, two RBI), Chase Tatum, and A Castaneda added one hit. Cass stole nine bases in the game, led by Tatum, Wallin, and Zach Stiles, with two each. Lovett started on the mound and allowed two earned runs on four hits with no walks. He struck out eight Yellow Jackets. Tatum (1 IP, 3R, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) and Wallin (2 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2K) pitched the final three innings. Cass (1-0) hosts Adairsville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and will visit Adairsville on Friday. PEPPERELL 9, ADAIRSVILLE 2 The Adairsville Tigers were tied 1-1 in the early innings Monday night but ultimately lost to visiting Pepperell, 9-2, in their season opener. The Dragons carried a 4-1 advantage into the fifth inning and pulled away by scoring five times over the final two frames. Pepperell outhit Adairsville fourteen to four. Kaiden Coker (1.1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss in relief of starter Hudson Parr (2.2 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 4K). Jack Nelson (1.1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 1BB, 2K), Jarrett Scott (0.2 IP, 1H, 1K), and Tyler Parker (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for the Tigers. Ethan Long (RBI), Peyton Bowen, Isaac Burnett, and Brody Varner had one hit each for Adairsville, and Long added two stolen bases. Coker stole a base. Adairsville (0-1) is scheduled for a home-and-home, two-game series with Cass on Thursday and Friday. The Tigers visit the Colonels on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

February 11, 2025 The Adairsville Lady Tigers soccer team began the 2025 season Monday night with a 7-1 home win over Darlington. Alexa Damer scored three first-half goals and four total in the game. Ella Edwards assisted all four of her counters. Edwards scored the other three Adairsville goals, two on penalty kicks and one unassisted. Adairsville led 4-1 at halftime and controlled most of the action on Darlington’s half of the field.  The Lady Tigers (1-0) host Hiram on Thursday.

February 11, 2025 Jakai Baldwin scored 12 points in the Colonels region tournament win over Woodland on Monday The Cass Colonels rallied from behind in the fourth quarter Monday night to defeat county rival Woodland for the third time this season, 59-52, in the opening round of the Region 7-AAAA Tournament at Allatoona High School. Cass led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and was ahead 31-27 at halftime before the Wildcats surged ahead in the third quarter. Woodland outscored Cass 14-7 in the third period to go up 41-38 entering the final eight minutes. The Colonels won the fourth quarter 21-11 to escape with a seven-point tournament victory. Xavier Lowe and Jakai Baldwin led a balanced Cass scoring attack with 12 points. Dylan Miller followed with 11 points. Parnel Gamble added seven in the win. Amir Heath scored 21 points, including 13 in the second half, to lead the Woodland scoring column. Bryson Van Tonder contributed 11 points. Caiden Moore and Isaiah Livsey added eight points for the Wildcats. "That was a tough win against a county rival," said Cass coach Kevin Cunningham after the game. "We get to do it all again tomorrow against another cross-town rival." Woodland completes the season with a 6-20 mark. Cass (11-14) advanced to face Cartersville in the Region 7-AAAA quarterfinals on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Allatoona High School. SEASON ENDS FOR WOODLAND GIRLS The Lady Cats were eliminated from the Region 7-AAAA tournament Monday night with a 60-21 loss to Cedartown at Allatoona High School. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 10-16 and will face Cass in the tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Woodland's season comes to a close with a 1-26 mark.

EMILY SURCEY — Samford University (Sr., Cass HS) … in a 6-1 Bulldogs’ victory this past Saturday over visiting Belmont University, Surcey won her Line 1 singles 6-1, 2-6, 10-3 and partnered with Libby Blair to win at Line 1 doubles, 7-6. On Friday, she lost her Line 1 singles match at Lipscomb University in Nashville, 0-6, 2-6, and with Grace Keller at Line 2 doubles, 3-6, in a 0-7 team loss. GYMNASTICS ABIGAIL BUNCH — Rhode Island College (Jr., Cass HS) … scored 9.300 and tied for 12th as an individual on uneven bars this past Sunday as the Anchorwomen finished second behind host University of Bridgeport (CT) in a quad meet with Springfield College (MA) and Wilberforce University (OH). Bunch also scored 8.850 on the balance beam to place 23rd individually. Bridgeport finished with 192.175 points. Rhode Island College was second at 189.950, followed by Springfield (185.275) and Wilberforce (177.300). SAWYER WILSON — Columbus State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a one-inning relief appearance last Friday with no decision in a 15-6 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne. The game was played at Young Harris College. Wilson allowed two earned runs on two hits. February 9, 2025 Georgia Highlands College baseball split a home doubleheader with Pellissippi State Saturday but finished the four-game weekend series with three wins. GHC secured a 10-4 victory in the first game on Saturday, while Pellissippi State managed a 16-14 win in the series finale. In Saturday’s win, the Chargers scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to gain control, and four GHC pitchers limited any comeback attempt by the Panthers. Jack Butler (4 IP, 3ER, 5H, 1BB, 6K) started on the mound and collected the pitching win for Georgia Highlands. Gavin Webster (1.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB), Braxton Wade (0.1 IP), and Hunter Ward (1 IP, 1BB, 1K) also took the mound for the Chargers. Ryan Martin (three RBI) and Grayson Godbee (home run, double, two RBI) had two hits for GHC in the win. Ali Banks (double, RBI), Kenskey Thomas (two RBI), Andrew Bishop (double, RBI), Tyler Phillips (RBI), and Caden Marcos (double) added one hit. Game 2 on Saturday was an offensive shootout, with the Chargers suffering their first loss of the season. Pellissippi State built a considerable lead and survived a ten-run bottom of the seventh by the GHC offense for a 16-14 win. Six Georgia Highlands’ pitchers combined to allow 13 earned runs on 15 hits and five walks in the loss. Marcos (home run, double, two RBI), Godbee (double, two RBI), and Bishop (two RBI) had two hits. Joe Johnson (home run, two RBI), Banks (RBI), Tyler Phillips (RBI), and Thomas added one hit. February 9, 2025 The Cass High wrestling team claimed victory in the Class AAAA Section A tournament on Saturday and will send twelve individuals to the GHSA State Finals Tournament, held from Thursday to Saturday at the Macon Centreplex. Woodland was the Section tournament runner-up and advanced nine individuals. Cartersville placed eleventh of 30 teams and advanced six wrestlers. The top eight placers in each weight class advanced from the Section tournament to the State Finals tournament. Cass finished ahead of Woodland 330-203. Central-Carroll (182), Harris County (114), and Ware County (109) rounded out the top five.
