  • Lady Chargers take two at Andrew College

    March 16, 2024 Georgia Highlands College softball swept a conference doubleheader at Andrew College on Thursday. The Lady Chargers won 9-1 and 5-1. GHC broke open the first game with an eight-run first inning. That was more than enough for winning pitcher, Hayden Joyner, who allowed just one earned run on three hits and two walks in five innings. In the second game, the Chargers built a 5-0 lead through the first 5-1/2 innings en route to a 5-1 win. Pitcher Grace Kendricks allowed just one, unearned run on four hits and no walks in her seven innings in the circle, Kendricks fanned three. Chloe Fowler, Avery Fisher, and Ally Graden had four hits in the doubleheader for the Chargers. Fowler's hits included a homer and a double with four RBIs. Fisher's hits included two doubles, one home run, and three RBIs. Graden's hits resulted in two RBIs. Haylee Dishmon (RBI) and Aliza Martinez (RBI) contributed two hits. Ansley Farmer (RBI), Cayden Warren, and Joyner added one hit. Andrew College slipped to 3-24 overall and 0-2 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. Georgia Highlands (6-19, 3-3) plays at Abraham Baldwin on Friday and they play at South Georgia State on Saturday.

  • Colonels outduel Spartans for a road win

    March 15, 2024 The Cass Colonels rode the outstanding pitching performances by starter Chase Tatum and relievers Devan Hutchinson and Hunter Lovett to win a low-scoring, 2-0 decision Friday at Campbell in Smyrna. Tatum scattered three hits and two walks in four scoreless innings to start the game on the mound. Hutchinson did not allow a hit or a walk in his two innings, and Lovett picked up a save with a scoreless final frame. The trio combined for five strikeouts. Nic Wright doubled home a run in the fourth inning and the Spartans’ defense committed three errors in the top of the seventh that led to a second Cass run. The Colonels managed only four hits themselves. Jesiel Moctezuma, Cayden Roberts, and Lovett (double) had one hit. The loss dropped the host Spartans to a 9-6 record. Cass (8-6) begins play in Region 7-5A next week with a three-game series against Dalton. The Catamounts are scheduled to host on Monday and Friday. Cass will host Game 2 of the series on Thursday. All three games are set for 5:55 p.m. starts.

  • Canes sweep series with Calhoun; Tigers nip Trion with a late-inning run

    March 14, 2024 The No. 1-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes completed a three-game series sweep of Calhoun on Thursday night at Richard Bell Field with a doubleheader sweep. The Canes won Thursday’s opener 12-2 and took the second game by a 5-2 final. Sawyer Wilson went six innings on the mound in Game 1 for a complete game victory. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and no walks while striking out nine. Logan Shrewsbury was the starter and winning pitcher in the second game. He went five innings allowing just two unearned runs on one hit and a pair of walks. Shrewsbury fanned four. Nicholas Hruby and Andrew Purdy threw one scoreless inning in relief to close out the win. Aidan Larkin had four hits including one double and one RBI in the twin bill. Caleb Daniel followed with three hits that included a pair of doubles and one RBI. Tristan McKibben (double, sac fly, three RBIs), Cole Crawford (double, triple, one RBI), and Luke Miller (solo home run) had two hits in the doubleheader. The Yellow Jackets fall to 4-9 on the season and 0-3 in Region 7-5A. Cartersville (11-3, 3-0) has a three-game region series next week with Woodland. The Canes host on Tuesday and Friday. Woodland is scheduled to host on Thursday. Each game is a 5:55 p.m. start. ADAIRSVILLE 3, TRION 2 The Adairsville Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday evening and pushed across the deciding run in a 3-2 victory over the visiting Trion Bulldogs. The contest included strong pitching performances by both teams. Adairsville managed just four hits and two earned runs. Ryan Farr picked up the pitching win for the Tigers in relief of starter Jack Nelson. Farr did not allow a run or a hit across the final three innings. He walked three and struck out six. Nelson yielded just two unearned runs on three hits and three hits. He fanned eight. On offense for the Tigers, Nelson had two hits and one RBI. Hayden Blalock and Harrison Cole contributed one hit. Easton Elrod added one RBI. Trion slipped to 6-3 with the loss. Adairsville (5-3) hosts Jones County on Saturday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader. DALTON 9, WOODLAND 8 The Wildcats out-hit the Catamounts eleven to six Thursday night but visiting Dalton pulled out a 9-8 Region 7-5A win over Woodland. The two clubs matched fireworks offensively in the early innings. Dalton took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Woodland grabbed the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the frame. The Catamounts regained the lead, 4-3, in the second and Woodland knotted the score again in the bottom of the frame, 4-4. In the third inning, both teams produced three runs. Tied 7-7, the fourth and fifth innings went scoreless before Dalton gained a 9-7 advantage in the top of the sixth. Woodland posted a run in their final frame and had the go-ahead baserunners in scoring position but Dalton closer Jose Orrelanes was able to get out of the inning. Lucas Baker (2.2 IP, 1ER, 0H, 3BB, 3K) was tagged with the Wildcats’ pitching loss. Austin Daves (2 IP, 6ER, 4H, 3BB, 3K) made the start for Woodland. Mason Williams (0.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 0BB) and Zach Lambert (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 0BB, 2K) pitched in relief. Joshua Hicks (RBI) and Brett Good had three hits for the Wildcats. Connor Stermer (two RBIs) and Ayden Ray (RBI) finished with two hits. Jake Clowers produced one hit and one RBI while Williams added one RBI. Woodland (8-4, 1-1) and Dalton (5-6, 1-1) are scheduled to conclude their three-game series on Friday in Whitfield County at 5:55 p.m. LAFAYETTE 8, CASS 3 A six-run top of the second inning propelled visiting LaFayette to an 8-3 non-region win Thursday night at Cass, spoiling the Colonels' senior night celebration. The Colonels trailed 7-3 through four innings and were unable to chase down the Ramblers. Cayden Roberts (3 IP, 7R, 3ER, 6H, 2BB, 2K) suffered the Colonels’ pitching loss. Justin Peace (4 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 1BB, 6K) was solid in relief. Nic Wright had two hits with two RBIs. Caleb Freeman also had two hits. Devan Hutchinson added one hit. The Ramblers improved to 7-6. Cass (7-6) is scheduled to play at Campbell on Friday. HEARTS ACADEMY 12, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 7 Excel outhit Hearts Academy twelve to nine Thursday night at Joe Cowan Park in Euharlee, but came up short on the scoreboard in a 12-7 loss to the Panthers. Hearts Academy scored 10 runs across the first four innings and outpaced the Eagles to lead 10-6. The Panthers added two more runs in the sixth inning and Excel added a single run in their final frame. Gavin Dyson (3 IP, 8ER, 5H, 6BB, 5K) suffered the pitching loss in a three-inning start. McKaden Gentry (0.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1H) and David Jinks (3.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 3BB, 5K) pitched in relief for ECA. Dyson had three hits including a home run and two RBIs. Jinks finished with two hits including a triple and one RBI. Carter May and Jacob Jinks collected two hits. Jacob Childers, Gentry, and Cameron Adams (two RBIs) added one hit. Excel plays at Johnson Ferry Christian Academy on Monday at 3 p.m.

  • Adairsville soccer teams fall at Bremen

    March 14, 2024 The Adairsville girls soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision Thursday night at home to the Lady Devils of Bremen. The Lady Tigers led 1-0 at the intermission on a 14th-minute goal by Ella Edwards. Alivia Joslin was credited with an assist. Bremen scored twice in the second half to pull out the Region 6-AAA win. Despite the loss, Adairsville coach Dave Sexauer saw some positives. “This was the best game of soccer we have played this season. We battled a good team, kept a lead for 40 minutes, and never gave up despite the heat and speed of the game. This game shows how much we have improved since last year.” Adairsville keeper, Bethany Kilgore kept the Lady Tigers close. The Blue Devils took 18 shots. Bremen improved to 4-4-2 on the season and 2-0 in region action. The Lady Tigers (8-3, 3-1) host Gilmer in a non-region match on Monday. BREMEN 3, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1 The Tigers fell to 3-4-2 overall and 2-1 in Region 6-AAA. Bremen improved to 7-1-2 and 2-0. Adairsville hosts Gilmer on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

  • Woodland edged in top ten soccer tilt

    March 14, 2024 The Woodland boys soccer team narrowly lost at Dalton on Thursday night, 2-1, in Region 7-5A action. The Top Ten matchup featured the third-ranked and sixth-ranked teams in the most recent Score Atlanta Class 5A rankings. Woodland struck first in the game’s 24th minute with a Milo Gonzalez goal set up by a Deiby Sanchez assist. The Catamounts equalized the score in the 39th minute to send the clubs to the intermission tied 1-1. Dalton (8-3-1, 2-1) took the lead in the 45th minute and the Wildcats were unable to find an equalizer of their own. Miguel Pineda had 16 saves in net for Woodland to keep the Wildcats close in the contest. Woodland (7-2, 1-1) plays at 4th-ranked Cass on Tuesday night. DALTON 4, WOODLAND GIRLS 0 The Lady Cats allowed two goals in the first half and two more in the first ten minutes of the second half Thursday night in a 4-0 loss at Dalton. The Lady Catamounts improved to 5-3-2 overall and 3-0 in Region 7-5A. Woodland (5-2, 0-2) plays at Cass next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

  • 3rd-ranked Chargers extend win streak to 16 games

    March 14, 2024 The Georgia Highlands Chargers extended their current winning streak to 16 games on Thursday with two wins over Roane State CC, 10-5 and 10-2. Eleven pitchers shared the pitching load for the Chargers. They limited the Raiders to 11 hits across 14 innings. GHC pitchers struck out 16. Will Cawthon led the offense with five hits and one RBI in the doubleheader. Ryan Wideman produced three hits including a home run, a triple, and five RBIs. Davis Newman totaled three hits including a homer, two doubles, and three RBIs. Barrett Eldridge had three hits including a home run and three RBIs. The losses dropped Roane State to 15-13 on the season. The NJCAA 3rd-ranked Chargers (28-2) host Abraham Baldwin on Tuesday at 3 p.m. to begin a four-game conference home-and-home series that includes three games at ABAC on Friday and Saturday (March 22-23).

  • Colonels win at Coahulla Creek

    March 13, 2024 The Cass Colonels scored in each of the first six innings Friday night to charge past host Coahulla Creek, 10-5. Cass posted two runs in the top of the first, one in the second, and one more in the third inning to build an early 4-0 lead. The Colts rallied back, however, in the bottom of the third to knot the score at 4-4. From there, the Colonels scored two runs in the fourth inning, three in the fifth, and one more in the sixth to go ahead 10-4 and take control. The Colts added their final run in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Johnson (3 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K) picked up the pitching victory for Cass in relief of starter Trenton Payne (3 IP, 4ER, 3H, 3BB). Chase Tatum struck out all three batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh. Nic Wright had three hits and three RBIs for the Colonels’ offense. Jesiel Moctezuma finished with two hits including a double and one RBI. Tatum also had two hits. Hunter Lovett hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Devan Hutchinson and Caleb Freeman produced one hit while Connor Jenkins drove in one run. The loss dropped Coahulla Creek to 4-5 on the season. Cass (7-5) hosts Lafayette on Thursday at 5:55 p.m.

    March 12, 2024 Tuesday's local soccer roundup: ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 8, RINGGOLD 0 Ella Edwards scored five goals and added one assist Tuesday night as the green and gold Lady Tigers won at Ringgold, 8-0. Adairsville led 5-0 at halftime and defeated Ringgold for the tenth consecutive time. “Ella Edwards exploited her matchups all game with her speed and ball control,” noted Adairsville head coach Dave Sexauer. “She had great success. Elle Causby controlled the midfield and Piper Tordrup made some key stops on Ringgold’s counterattacks.” Alivia Joslin finished with two goals and had one assist. Causby had the other Adairsville goal. Alexa Damer contributed two assists. Carly Edwards, Victoria Loudon, and Maddie Gossett added one assist. Adairsville (8-2, 3-0) hosts Bremen on Thursday. Reagan Weightman (one assist), Libby Morgan (one assist), Ansley Burns (two assists), and Brionna Carver scored one goal each. East Paulding falls to 2-6 on the season with the loss.
