Friday basketball roundup: Canes and Eagles sweep; Lady Tigers get road win


CARTERSVILLE BOYS 74, LAFAYETTE 59


Jaylon Pugh led Cartersville with 34 points. Cade Archer scored 18 and Kameron Whitfield added 10 to help the Canes even their season and region mark at 1-1. Cartersville plays Gilmer Tuesday at 6:30 and travels to Pickens Friday (Dec. 18).



CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 46, LAFAYETTE 34


The Lady Canes evened their season record at 2-2. LaFayette fell to 1-7. The Lady Canes host Gilmer Tuesday and travel to Pickens Friday (Dec. 18).


EXCEL GIRLS 38, TRION 24


The Lady Eagles took a 23-8 lead at halftime and held on for victory. Xena Enos led Excel with 11 points. Rylie Boston scored 9 and Whitney Harris added 6. Anna Lane Hattaway and Lindsey Mauldin scored four points each, Brighton McCollum added three, while Kalli Beth Scheff and Lindsey Mauldin scored two each. Rayven Lawrence led Trion (2-3) with 8 points. The Lady Eagles (4-3) host St. Anne-Pacelli Saturday (Dec. 12) at 6pm.


EXCEL BOYS 71, TRION 41


Excel made 21 of 24 free throws as a team and Caleb West led the Eagles with 16 points. Darius Thrower and Chris Hale scored 13 each and Latrel Jones added 12 to give Excel four players in double figures. Max Rowland 4, Sam Kirkland 3, Jordan Wilkie 3, Joseph Cuomo 2, Ryan Pickens 2, Hunter Johnson 2 Trion remains winless on the season at 0-4. The Eagles (4-3) host St. Anne-Pacelli Saturday (Dec. 12).


ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 53, COAHULLA CREEK 38


The Lady Tigers earned their first win of the year and improved to 1-6 for the year. Adairsville led 11-6 after one quarter and 22-11 at the intermission. They expanded their lead to 40-25 after three quarters. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 11 points. Victoria Davis and Zay Harris also reached double figures with 10 each. Logan O’Neal 8, Havyn Isaac 6, Josie Summerville 4, Latya Printup 3, and Chloe Powell 1 rounded out the Lady Tigers’ scoring. The Lady Tigers play at Calhoun Saturday at 1:30pm and at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Tuesday at 6pm.


COAHULLA CREEK BOYS 72, ADAIRSVILLE 54


The Tigers trailed by nine after one period and maintained that difference to trail 34-25 at halftime, but the Colts distanced themselves with a 24-6 third quarter on their way to a Region 6-AAA victory. Coahulla Creek improved to 9-1 overall and 5-0 in region play. Adairsville’s record is now 1-4 overall and 0-4 in region games.


SEQUOYAH GIRLS 57, WOODLAND 15


Madgie Robinson led Woodland with 7 points. Sequoyah improved to 5-2 overall. The Lady Wildcats fell to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland plays Cedartown Monday at Georgia Highlands in their opening game of the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival.


SEQUOYAH BOYS 85, WOODLAND 83


Sequoyah improved to 6-1 on the season with a road Region 7-AAAAA win at Woodland. The Wildcats slipped to 2-5 overall. Woodland plays Cedartown Monday in the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival.
