Cass teams wrap up Lafayette tourney with wins

CASS GIRLS 51, COOSA 47

Junior point guard, Jana Morning, scored a game high 18 points and was named to the all-tournament team as the Lady Colonels beat Coosa in a consolation game at the Lafayette High School Christmas Tournament Wednesday afternoon.

Cass, who won two of three games in the event, also got 10 points from junior guard Esmeralda Thomas.

The game was tight throughout. Cass had a mere three point lead at halftime, 29-26, but the game was tied after one period and after three quarters.

The Lady Colonels’ defense stepped up its effort again in the final quarter and allowed only two field goals to pull out the win. Cass edged Coosa by four despite making only seven of 13 free throw attempts in the second half.

Kyla Michienzi scored eight points for Cass, followed by Payton Stoddard and Lexy Walraven with five each. Chanel Clemmons added four points and Hailey Gildersleeve one.

Perry Shumate led Coosa with 14 points. Emma Reynolds added nine.

The Lady Colonels improved to 7-5 on the season and play at Creekview Saturday in a 4pm start. They also travel to Dalton Tuesday (Jan. 5) before hosting River Ridge and Cartersville January 8 and 9.

Mike Sims' last second shot lifted the Colonels to a two-point victory over Trion in the Lafayette High School Christmas Tournament third place game.

Cass won two of three games in the three day tournament. “We got some great minutes tonight from Tryston Coffman and Matt Mundy,” noted Colonels' coach David Brock. Sims was named to the All-Tournament team.

Cass improved to 5-6 for the season with the win. Trion fell to 3-9.

The Colonels play at Creekview Saturday at 5:30pm before a road trip to Dalton (Tue. Jan. 5). Cass will then have weekend home games against River Ridge (Jan. 8) and Cartersville (Jan. 9).
