The Bartow County Little League Senior team (16-and-under) won the Georgia Little League Baseball District 1 championship Monday by sweeping a best-of-three series with Rockmart, 18-4 and 15-0. The Bartow team roster includes Isaac Burnett, Bryson Chatman, Barrett Fuller, Dutch Hernandez, McCayden Hufstetler, Landon Lamb, Drew Nida, Huddy Parr, Brylan Reynolds, Aiden Richie, John Ryan, and Brody Varner. The Bartow County Little League Senior team advances to the Georgia State Championship Tournament that begins July 8 at Doyle Street Park in Toccoa.

The Bartow County 8-and-under coach pitch softball team won the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) District 5 championship this past Tuesday (June 13) in Gordon County by defeating Rome in the title game, 20-9. The Bartow County team rattled off 25 hits in the championship game with every player in the lineup contributing at least one hit. Evie Privett led Bartow with a 4-for-4 performance, including an inside-the-park home run, two doubles, and five RBIs. Livi Caverly (double, three RBIs), Charlotte Crumley (two RBIs), and Bella Rogers (double) followed with three hits each. Audrey Benham (HR, triple, four RBIs), Addi Jo Reynolds (HR, two RBIs), Hallie Bell (two RBIs), and Lily Ragsdale contributed two hits apiece. Sariah Daniel (RBI), Madi Foster (double), Dallas Hutcheson, and Brinley Weaver added one hit each. Bartow County advances to the GRPA 8U Coach Pitch State Tournament that begins Tuesday (June 20) at the Gordon County Sonoraville Recreation Complex. Bartow’s first game will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. against the Rome/Carroll County winner. The double-elimination state tournament continues through Thursday, June 22. His performance highlights this week's edition of 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' which also includes updates on Jason Bohn's PGA Champions Tour rookie season and local MiLB players Mason Barnett and Anthony Seigler. Amateur Golf BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … completed rounds of 66-68-73-70 (11-under-par) this past Thursday through Saturday and tied for seventh at the 2023 Dogwood Invitational. He finished 17th in the same event last year. The prestigious amateur tournament featured some of the top collegiate golfers in the country at the 6,947-yard, par-72 Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta. Mississippi State University’s Hunter Logan won the tournament with a 20-under-par finish. Brumlow, currently ranked 242nd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, will likely rise in the new standings to be released later this week. PGA Champions Tour JASON BOHN — PGA Champions Tour; Acworth resident; Cartersville CC member … fired a final round 67 (5-under-par) and climbed 29 spots on the leaderboard to finish T17 at the 54-hole American Family Insurance Championship at University Ridge GC in Madison, Wisconsin earning just under $34,000. Steve Stricker won the senior tour event at 18-under-par. Bohn also had rounds of 73 and 70 to complete the tournament at 6-under-par. He has now played in six Champions Tour events since turning 50 in April and ranks 72nd in the 2023 Charles Schwab Cup standings. Up next on the Champions Tour is the Dicks Sporting Goods Open June 23-25 at En-Joie Golf Club in Endicott, New York. MiLB MASON BARNETT — Quad Cities River Bandits (KC Royals High A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … the right-hand pitcher made a four-inning start at home last Wednesday and was the pitcher of record in a 12-3 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Barnett allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks. He struck out five. The 22-year-old is now 1-2 in nine starts (39-⅔ innings) with a 4.54 ERA and 52 strikeouts. Quad Cities finished the week with just one win in a six-game series with Fort Wayne. The River Bandits (28-29) slipped to third place in the Midwest League’s West Division and will play a six-game series Tuesday through Sunday at the Beloit Sky Carp. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … saw action in four games last week for the Patriots at the Hartford Yard Goats and went 3-for-17 at the plate with a walk, a double, and a two-run home run. In 34 games this season, the 23-year-old is hitting .189 with 15 RBIs in 111 official at-bats. Somerset (34-22, second place, Eastern League Northeast Division) won five of six games at Hartford last week and will host the Altoona Curve Tuesday through Sunday in a six-game set.

The Bartow County 10U girls' fastpitch softball team won the Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) Class A/B District 5 championship earlier this week defeating Calhoun 16-1 in three innings to capture the title. Madison Evans pitched for Bartow and struck out six to collect the victory in the circle. She also paced the offense by going 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, nine RBIs, and added a stolen base. Sarah White was 2-for-2 with a triple, a double, and two RBIs. Mia Benitez finished 1-for-1 with a double and two RBIs while Harper Swancy walked three times and stole three bases. The Bartow 10U girls advance to the Georgia GRPA State Championship Tournament June 20-22 at Sammy Haggard Park in Madison County. The locals will play the District 7 champion on Tuesday, June 20 at 6 p.m. Team members include Mia Benitez, Kora Black, Rylee English, Quinn Eppers, Madison Evans, Addalyn Johnson, Emmy King, Caroline Owen, Harper Swancy, Linleigh Wade, Sarah White, and Lillian Wilson. The Cartersville Little League Baseball Rookie League team suffered an opening-round loss last Saturday at the double-elimination Northwest Georgia Sectional tournament in Cobb County. Still, it bounced back to win four straight games in capturing the 2023 Section championship. Georgia Little League Baseball establishes the Rookie League level for seven and eight year olds. Cartersville's first-round loss was 11-4 to Smyrna Blue. The locals reeled off back-to-back wins over Smyrna Blue on Sunday and Monday (10-2 and 13-5) before sweeping Peachtree City 12-2 and 7-2 in the Northwest Section championship round this past Tuesday and Wednesday. The Cartersville Rookie team advances to the Georgia Little League Rookie state tournament June 16-18 at Warner Robins American Little League. The team roster includes Wheeler Arthur, Tyson Botts, Caleb Cox, Will Geldhauser, Jonah Holder, Caswell McFarland, Will Porter, Jayden Rodriguez, Finley Rogan, Jackson Taylor, Josh Villarreal, and Tripp Walker. Bryan Villarreal is the Cartersville manager with assistant coaches Clayton Porter and Blake Arthur.

The Bartow County 14U baseball team won the Georgia Recreation & Park Association District 5 championship Monday night (June 5) at Rollins Park in Dalton. Bartow won the best-of-three district championship series with two straight wins — 5-2 and 6-1. In the opener, Connor Corbin went 3-for-4 at the plate and worked five innings on the mound striking out seven. Kason Miller hit a second inning solo home run to start the Bartow scoring. Zaylen Cochran added a double at the plate and struck out three on the mound in two innings of work. Dakota Keane (double), Clayton Wilkes (two RBIs), D.J. Vigil, and Nick Robinson (RBI) added one hit each for Bartow in the opening victory. In the Game 2 win, Chandler Arnold fanned 15 in his six innings on the mound. Corbin had two hits with one RBI. Cochran had a hit and three RBIs. Kasey Jacobs drove in a pair of runs with one hit and Wilkes also added one hit for Bartow. With their District 5 title, Bartow 14U advances to the GRPA State Championship Tournament in Effingham County June 20-24. L-R: Sadye Johnson, Jason Bohn, Mason Barnett, Anthony Seigler COLLEGE SOFTBALL SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (So., Adairsville HS) … although the Nighthawks’ catcher was in a supporting role since mid-April, UNG (64-7) won the NCAA D-II Women’s College World Series and National Championship defeating Grand Valley State (Michigan) for the title last Tuesday and Wednesday in Chattanooga. Johnson finished her sophomore season with a .235 batting average with one double and five RBIs in 17 games played and 17 official at-bats. Defensively, she added a 1.000 fielding percentage in 38 total chances. PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR JASON BOHN — PGA Champions Tour … shot rounds of 74-72-71 — 217 (1-over-par) to place T66 this past weekend at the Principal Charity Classic at Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa. The Acworth resident and member of Cartersville Country Club was a PGA Tour member starting in 2004 and won twice. He won the B.C. Open in 2005 and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2010. He also had a pair of playoff losses during his PGA Tour stint and 10 total runner-up finishes. He placed third four times with 18 Top Fives and 30 Top Ten finishes totaling over $16 million in official tour money. Prior to his PGA Tour career Bohn had two Nationwide Tour wins, two Canadian Tour victories, and won the multi-tour 2006 Callaway Golf Pebble Beach Invitational. A Lewisburg, Pennsylvania native, Bohn turned 50 in April and is now competing on the PGA Tour Champions Tour. He has now played in five events with a best finish of T14 in late April at the Insperity Invitational in Woodlands, Texas. Bohn is scheduled to play in this week’s American Family Insurance Championship Friday through Sunday at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wisconsin. MiLB MASON BARNETT — Quad Cities River Bandits (KC Royals High A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a two-inning start last Wednesday receiving no decision in an eventual 11-7 River Bandits’ win at the Lake County Captains. The 23-year-old allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks. His outing included four strikeouts facing a dozen batters. The right-hand pitcher is now 1-1 on the season in eight starts (35.2 IP) with a 4.04 ERA and 47 strikeouts. Quad Cities was 3-3 in a series at Lake County last week. The Bandits (27-24) are currently in second place in the Midwest League’s West Division. They trail Cedar Rapids by two games and have a six-game home series Tuesday through Sunday with the Fort Wayne TinCaps. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … started twice at catcher and twice as the Patriots’ DH last week while Somerset went 4-2 in a six-game home series against Portland. The switch hitter hit safely in all four games going 4-for-12 including one double, two walks, and a pair of RBIs. The Yankees’ 2018 first-round selection also stole a base and scored one run during the week. Seigler’s season batting average is now .191 with 13 RBIs in 94 official at-bats. The Patriots (29-21) are in second place in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division. They are 2-½ games behind Portland and play a six-game series Tuesday through Sunday at the Hartford Yard Goats.

The 2022-23 Georgia High School Association athletic calendar has ended, and a pair of local high schools have claimed Top Ten finishes in their respective Georgia Athletic Directors Cup standings. Cartersville High placed seventh overall in Class AAAAA while Adairsville finished ninth in Class AAA. The GADA Regions Bank Directors Cup scores each school’s best eight finishes for girls’ and boys’ sports. Beginning this year, only schools with a current GADA member were included in the all-sports competition. In Class AAA, Wesleyan won the Directors Cup title with 1,429 total points. Oconee County (1,318) was runner-up and Savannah Christian (1,035) placed third. Adairsville’s ninth place overall finish of 683 points, included a fifth place finish by the Adairsville boys and a 16th place finish by the Adairsville girls. According to the GADA website, the Tigers and Lady Tigers received points for the following finishes in state playoffs: Adairsville 5th — Boys Swimming 8th — Cheerleading 9th — Volleyball 9th — Football 9th — Girls Basketball 9th — Boys Basketball 9th — Boys Tennis 9th —Baseball 9th — Wrestling-Duals 9th — Girls Soccer 15th — Boys Cross Country 17th — Boys Soccer 27th — Girls Track and Field *30th — Boys Track and Field *State placement but not among the school’s best eight finishes. Woodland (441) was 24th overall and Cass (373) finished 26th in the overall standings. The overall finishes for the other three schools in Region 7-AAAAA included Calhoun (8th, 841), Dalton (11th, 812), and Hiram (36th, 206). In girls’ sports, the Lady Canes (451) were 9th in the classification and had the best finish among schools in 7-5A. The remainder of the region girls’ standings included Calhoun (14th, 402), Dalton (16th, 347), Woodland (24th, 195), Cass (27th, 152), and Hiram (32nd, 124). Dalton (6th, 465) led the boys’ standings in Region 7-5A followed by Calhoun (8th, 439), Cartersville (11th, 400), Woodland (23rd, 246), Cass (24th, 221), and Hiram (37th, 82). Locally, right-hand pitcher Mason Barnett of the Kansas City Royals organization and catcher Anthony Seigler of the New York Yankees organization, continue to toil with their respective MiLB teams. Meanwhile, the community was represented by local athletes at the NAIA World Series, the NCAA D-II WCWS, and the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. MiLB MASON BARNETT — Quad Cities River Bandits (KC Royals High A affiliate; 2nd-yr. pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a five-inning start and received no decision last Wednesday in the Bandits’ 4-3 home win over the Beloit Sky Carp. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; 6th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … was 0-for-13 with three walks, one RBI, and score one run last week as the Patriots went 2-4 at the Erie Sea Wolves. Seigler, a 2018 first-round selection by the Yankees, made two starts at catcher and started twice at DH. After hitting .265 in April, the 23-year-old has struggled in 48 official at-bats in May with a .104 batting average. For the season, he is hitting .171 in 82 at-bats with 11 RBIs. Somerset (25-19) remains 4-½ games behind the Portland SeaDogs in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division. The Patriots host a six-game series with Portland Tuesday through Sunday. BASEBALL DEVIN WARNER — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … returned to action Monday following an injury in the Grizzlies’ 11-10 loss to Indiana Wesleyan at the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. Warner started at third base and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a solo home run and two RBIs. GGC (50-8) lost two straight in the ten-team, double-elimination World Series also falling to Taylor University (Indiana). Warner hit for a .353 average in 2023 appearing in 51 games with 167 official at-bats. He had 14 home runs and 55 RBIs. COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-4 with a double in the Grizzlies’ 23-7 loss to Taylor University in the first game of the double-elimination NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. GGC led 6-2 through the first four innings before Taylor exploded for 21 runs across the fifth through eighth frames. In their final game Monday, Wilbanks was 1-for-3 with a double and one RBI. Georgia Gwinnett finished the season with a 50-8 record. He finished the 2023 season hitting for a .400 average while appearing in 42 games with 120 official at-bats. The Grizzlies’ catcher hit two homers and drove in 48 runs. SOFTBALL SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (So., Adairsville HS) … although the Nighthawks’ catcher has been in a supporting role since mid-April, UNG has won the 2023 Peach Belt Conference, the Southeast sub-regional and Super Regional, and advanced at the NCAA D-II Women’s College World Series to the National Championship series against Grand Valley State (Michigan) Tuesday and Wednesday in Chattanooga. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (So., Cartersville HS) … played the first three rounds this past Friday through Sunday at the NCAA Championship but did not have a counting score for the Bulldogs. He carded rounds 74-78-74 while UGA made the 54-hole cut and qualified for the final 18-hole round of stroke play on Monday. Brumlow was not a starter in Monday’s round. Georgia finished 14th and did not qualify for match play. The top eight teams following Monday’s final stroke play round start match play for the national title Tuesday and Wednesday. The NCAA Championship is being conducted on the 7,289-yard, par-70 Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Brumlow finished his sophomore campaign with five Top 20 individual finishes including a second at the Classic City One Day, 10th at the Puerto Rico Classic, 13th at the Calusa Cup, 17th at the Fredrica Cup, and 18th at the NCAA Bath Michigan Regional.

The Cartersville boys’ golf team finished third and the Lady Canes placed eighth in their respective GHSA Class AAAAA State Championship Tournaments Monday and Tuesday at Cartersville Country Club and Fields Ferry Golf Club (Calhoun), respectively. The Canes, who were trailing by only one shot after Monday’s opening round, shot 307 on Tuesday and placed third for the second straight year with a two-day total score of 612. Cambridge won the state championship in Class 5A with a two-day total of 600. Northgate was the state runner-up at 606. Brody Tidwell led Cartersville with a second round 74. Andrew Lutjens followed with a 76. Noah Pogue fired a 77 and Anderson McCary carded an 80 on Tuesday. Reid Lowry shot 81 in the final round and Owen Dunn closed with an 85. In addition to the back-to-back third place finishes for the Cartersville boys, the Canes were fourth in 2019, and second in 2021. NOTE: There were no spring sports in 2020. The Hurricanes have six state titles all time, winning Class A in 1967 and Class AA in 1990, 1997, 2000, 2001, and 2002. The Lady Canes earned an eighth-place finish with a two-day total of 577. Greenbrier (503) won the title with Northview (513) finishing as Class AAAAA runner-up. Brooklyn Heath, who had a hole-in-one Tuesday on hole number 5, carded an 80 Tuesday to lead the Lady Canes in the final round. She was followed by Sophie Kim (91), Lily Cagle (118), and Maddy Morris (128).

The Cartersville High boys’ golf team trails by one shot and the Lady Canes are currently in eighth place following the opening rounds of their respective GHSA Class 5A State Championships. The boys’ state tournament is being hosted by Cartersville Country Club while the girls’ state tournament is at Fields Ferry Golf Club in Calhoun. Brody Tidwell fired an opening round 71 (1-under-par) Monday to lead the Hurricanes. He was followed by Andrew Lutjens with a 72. Anderson McCary carded a 78 and Reid Lowry followed with an 83. Noah Pogue shot 84 and Owen Dunn added an 89 for the Cartersville boys. The Canes team total of 304 trails first-round leader, Cambridge (303), by a single shot. Northgate is in third place at 307. In Calhoun, Brooklyn Heath shot 86 to pace the Lady Canes. She was followed by teammates Sophie Kim (92), Lily Cagle (110), and Maddy Morris (118). The Cartersville girls’ total of 288 has them in eighth place at the midway point of the championship. Greenbrier (251) leads the girls’ tournament by one shot ahead of Northview (252). Both 36-hole championship tournaments conclude with a final 18-hole round on Tuesday.
