Cartersville pitchers Phillip Schiltz (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 5K) and Geoffrey Gore (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) combined for seven strikeouts and yielded just two hits Friday night in a Canes’ 10-0 five-inning win at Woodland. The win completed a three-game series sweep for the Canes over the Wildcats and kept Cartersville unbeaten through six games in Region 7-5A play. Cartersville raced to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and later added a run in the third, two in the fourth, and three more in the fifth inning while pounding out 11 hits. Luke Miller (double, RBI), Ian McNair-Siegler (RBI), and Miles Owen had two hits each for the Hurricanes. Caleb Daniel, Landon Cole (RBI), Cameron Cochran (double, RBI), Kaden Stephenson (RBI), and Paul Gamble contributed one hit each. Harrison Childers (sac fly) drove in two runs. Woodland utilized a trio of pitchers. Ayden Ray (1.1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 3BB) started on the mound and was tagged with the loss. Zach Lambert (2.2 IP, 5ER, 6H, 0BB, 3K) and Hunter Shirley (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 2K) pitched in relief for the Wildcats. Playing the rubber game of this past week’s three-game series with Dalton Friday night at home, the Cass Colonels saw an early 3-0 lead get away before snagging the lead back in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-4 victory and a 2-1 series win over the Catamounts. Carson Hill drove in the Colonels’ first inning run before Jesiel Moctezuma and Hunter Lovett drove in one run each to give Cass a 3-0 advantage in the second inning. Tyler Neises hit a solo home run for Dalton in the top of the fourth to make the score 3-1 but the Colonels responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to regain a three-run lead. In the top of the fifth Dalton scored twice to narrow the Cass lead to 4-3. One hit, two walks, and a pair of sacrifice flies produced the Catamount runs. Dalton then took advantage of a pair of Cass errors, a single, and a sacrifice fly to knot the score at 4-4. The Colonels regained the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. Chase Tatum opened the frame with a single and stole second base. He then scored on a Wesley Collins RBI single and a 5-4 lead. Devan Hutchinson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB) took over on the mound in the top of the seventh and needed only five pitches in a one-two-three inning of work to pick up a save. Trenton Payne (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H), who pitched in the sixth inning, collected the pitching win. Hunter Lovett (4 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 1K) pitched the first four innings with Justin Peace (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB) retired three outs in the fifth inning. Lovett (double, RBI) and Collins (RBI) had two hits each for Cass. Hill (RBI), Connor Jenkins, Cayden Roberts, Tatum, and Hutchinson finished with one hit apiece. Moctezuma added one RBI. The Adairsville Tigers scored three runs in their final two offensive frames Friday night for a come-from-behind Region 6-AAA win at Gordon Lee, 4-2. Adairsville pitchers Kaiden Coker (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 3K) and Dawson Craig (4 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 4K) limited the Trojans to only one earned run on seven hits and a pair of walks. The two hurlers combined for seven strikeouts in the victory. Evan Sanders hit a leadoff home run to get the Tigers on the scoreboard in the first inning but Gordon Lee matched that run in the bottom of the first and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth. That score held until Peyton Bowen doubled in a run in the top of the sixth to draw Adairsville even at 2-2. In the top of the seventh, Braxton Ryan singled to open the frame, and his courtesy runner — Easton Elrod — moved to second on a sacrifice by PJ Weeks. Sanders was intentionally walked before Chris Roper drove in the go-ahead run with a ground ball single into center field. Jarrett Scott then reached on an infield error that allowed Sanders to score the Tigers’ insurance run. The Trojans produced a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Craig halted any idea of a threat with a flyout that ended the game. Bowen had two hits including a double and one RBI to lead the Adairsville offense. Sanders (solo home run), Roper (RBI), Jack Nelson, and Ryan had the other Tigers’ hits. Both Adairsville High School soccer teams secured Class AAA state playoff berths Friday night with victories at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Cass boys won a thrilling penalty kicks shootout over Calhoun and both Woodland teams took care of business against region foe Hiram. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 2, LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 1 A pair of goals by Lizzie LeMay in the second half lifted the Lady Tigers to a 2-1 win Friday night at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The Region 6-AAA victory secured a No. 3-seed for the Adairsville girls in the Class AAA state playoffs. The Lady Tigers will play their first round game at the No. 2-seed from Region 5-AAA. (to be determined). LeMay’s goals Friday night came within five minutes of one another. In the 54th minute she scored off a deflection from a LFO defender. In the 59th minute, her go-ahead goal came from her carry from the corner and a shot from the top right corner of the box. “Our passing tonight was solid. It led us to controlling play the majority of the time,” said Lady Tigers’ head coach David Sexauer. “Jacksyn Elrod was a “powerhouse” on the field tonight. She was always in the right spot and won a majority of her one-on-one’s. She did a good job of carrying and feeding the ball up the field to our strikers.” The Lady Tigers (9-5, 4-2) will celebrate their 2023 seniors next Thursday in a non-region home game against Mt. Zion-Carroll. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 5, LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 4 The Tigers secured a state playoff berth Friday night with a 5-4 win at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. Jesus Banuelos scored a pair of goals in the Adairsville victory. JJ Grimaldo, William Martinez, and Blade Benefield added the other Tigers' goals. Grimaldo assisted on a pair of scores. John Mark Shepard contributed one assist while Benefield and Martinez also added one assist each. Adairsville (6-8, 3-3) qualifies for the Class AAA state playoffs as the region’s No. 4-seed. The Tigers will play at the Region 5-AAA champion -- Sandy Creek -- in the first round of the playoffs on April 12. The playoff appearance will be a first for the Tigers’ program. CASS BOYS 2, CALHOUN 1 (Cass 5-4 PKs) The Cass boys won a thrilling penalty kicks shootout over visiting Calhoun Friday night to move into a second place tie with Woodland in Region 7-5A. The two Bartow County rivals trail Dalton — unbeaten in region play — in the standings. The Colonels and Yellow Jackets battled in regulation to a 1-1 tie and completed a pair of overtime periods still knotted a 1-1 before settling the contest in a penalty kicks shootout. Cass grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute to hold a 1-0 advantage at the intermission. Christian Viella finished off the goal off an assist from Camden Hillhouse. The score stayed that way until the 77th minute when Calhoun scored an equalizer. In the penalty kick shootout, all five Cass attempts were successful while Calhoun failed on their third attempt. Alex Hernandez, Viella, Kayden Pineda, Irwin Vasquez, and Hillhouse were all successful during the shootout. WOODLAND GIRLS 3, HIRAM 1 The Woodland girls scored twice in the second half Friday night defeat visiting Hiram 3-1 in Region 7-5A soccer action. Hiram scored in the 25th minute to take a 1-0 lead but the Lady Cats scored the equalizing goal five minutes later. Carlie Forman scored for Woodland off an assist from Reagan “Dutch” Weightman. Woodland took control in the second half with a pair of goals from Weightman. Both Lady Cats’ goals were assisted by Brionna Carver. Freshman goalkeeper Peyton Keller made ten saves in the victory. The loss drops the Lady Hornets to 4-9-1 overall and 1-3 in Region 7-5A. Woodland (2-6-1, 1-2) returns to the pitch Monday night at 5:30 p.m. at Cartersville. WOODLAND BOYS 9, HIRAM 1 The Wildcats overpowered visiting Hiram Friday night in a Region 7-5A matchup, 9-1. The loss dropped the Hornets to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in region action. Class 5A top-ranked Cartersville defeated visiting Woodland Thursday night while Adairsville topped Ridgeland and Cass won at Dalton. CARTERSVILLE 5, WOODLAND 1 The Canes and Wildcats battled scoreless through three innings before Cartersville broke the ice with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Cartersville added on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to finish off a 5-1 win Thursday night over visiting Woodland. Ryan Johnson (7 IP, 1R, 0ER, 6H, 0BB, 7K) struck out seven and allowed just one, unearned run in a complete-game effort. Austin Daves (6 IP, 5R, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) pitched well for the Wildcats but suffered the loss. Ayden Ray had three hits for Woodland and drove in the Wildcats’ lone run in the sixth. Mason Williams, Cam Williams, and Brett Good had the other Woodland base hits. Miles Owen finished with two hits for Cartersville. Cameron Cochran (RBI), Luke Miller, and Landon Cole had one double each. Caleb Daniel (RBI), Harrison Childers, Isaac McNair-Seigler (RBI), and Paul Gamble (RBI) added one hit each. ADAIRSVILLE 7, RIDGELAND 4 The Tigers finished a two-game Region 6-AAA sweep of visiting Ridgeland Thursday night with a 7-4 win over the Panthers. Adairsville posted four runs in the bottom of the first to take control early. Ridgeland scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to shrink the Tigers’ lead to 5-2, but Adairsville answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-2. The Panthers scored twice in the top of the seventh and had a runner on base when Adairsville reliever Jarrett Scott ended the threat with a strikeout. Tigers’ starter Jack Nelson (6 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 8K) scattered four hits and a pair of walks while picking up the pitching win. He limited Ridgeland to only two unearned runs. Scott (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) finished off the seventh inning on the mound for the Tigers. Scott also paced the Adairsville offense with three hits including a double. Landon O’Neal followed with two hits and one RBI. Evan Sanders hit a solo home run. Nelson doubled with one RBI. Tyler Driggers contributed a double. Braxton Ryan added a hit and one RBI. CASS 6, DALTON 2 (9 innings) Tuesday night at Cass, the Catamounts scored seven runs across the final two innings for a come-from-behind win. Thursday night the Colonels flipped the tables at Dalton. Connor Jenkins homered in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings and the Colonels scored four times with two outs in the top of the ninth to even the series at one game each. A Dalton error followed by back-to-back hits by Nic Wright and Wesley Collins gave Cass a 4-2 lead. Then another Cats’ error and a double by Jesiel Moctezuma drove in two more runs. Trenton Payne gave up a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth before striking out the final two Catamounts. Devan Hutchinson (3.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB) collected the pitching win in relief of starter Cayden Roberts (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 2K). Moctezuma (two RBIs) and Wright (RB) both finished with two hits including a double for the Colonels. Cayden Roberts and Chase Tatum (RBI) also doubled. Jenkins (homer) and Collins (RBI) had the other Cass hits. Dalton (3-11, 1-4) travels to Cass (9-6, 4-1) to complete their three-game region series Friday at 5:55 p.m.

The Cartersville and Cass soccer teams split Region 7-5A matches Wednesday night at Cartersville. The Lady Canes blanked the Lady Colonels 3-0 and the Cass boys defeated the Cartersville boys, 3-1. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 3, CASS 0 Three different Lady Canes scored goals Wednesday night as the Cartersville girls blanked visiting Cass, 3-0. Hattie Beth Williams, Kiley McMichael, and Mallory Nicklas scored the Lady Canes’ goals. Cartersville improved to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-1 in region action. The Lady Colonels fall to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-5A. CASS BOYS 3, CARTERSVILLE 1 The Colonels built a 2-0 lead in the first half Wednesday night at Cartersville and added to their lead in the second half en route to a 3-1 Region 7-5A win over the Purple Hurricanes. Alex Hernandez scored the first Cass goal on a free kick. The second goal for the Colonels was finished by Mason Madrid off an assist from Camden Hillhouse. Cass made it 3-0 in the second half on a Hillhouse goal assisted by Madrid. Daniel Abeja scored the Cartersville goal at about the 60th minute. Cass head coach Justin Fitzgerald commended the defensive effort of the Colonels’ Jordan Solis and Kayden Pineda in the midfield. The loss drops the Hurricanes to 5-4-2 on the season and 2-1 in Region 7-5A. Cass improves to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in region play.
