RUSSELL SHEALY — Syracuse University (R-Sr., Cartersville resident; Darlington HS) … The starting goalie for Syracuse, Shealy made four saves and gave up two goals in a 2-1 loss to Cornell on Tuesday, Oct. 4. He then earned the shutout in a 2-0 win over Wake Forest last Friday. He made five saves in the win. Former Cartersville High School quarterback Trevor Lawrence had only two incompletions Sunday in 22 pass attempts, but managed only 163 yards in Jacksonville’s 34-27 loss at the Indianapolis Colts. The Jags’ QB had one TD pass and added two short touchdown runs as Jacksonville slipped to 2-4. Meanwhile in other NFL news, Cleveland tight end Miller Forristall has been reassigned to the Browns’ practice squad. This week’s update also includes 30 local collegiate athletes contributing to their respective programs in football, cross country, volleyball, soccer, tennis, golf, and swimming. NFL MILLER FORRISTALL — Cleveland Browns (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Alabama; Cartersville HS) … had spent time on the Browns’ practice squad earlier this season and had even been called up twice, but the tight end was waived after appearing in Cleveland’s game at Atlanta in Week 4. He has now been returned to the practice squad where he will continue his development. Cleveland (2-4) plays Sunday at the Baltimore Ravens. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 2nd-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) completed 20 of 22 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown in Sunday’s 34-27 loss at the Indianapolis Colts. Lawrence also ran six times for 23 yards and two touchdowns in the defeat. His 1-yard keeper with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter gave the Jags a 7-0 lead. His 2-yard run early in the third quarter capped a 75-yard drive and put Jacksonville up 21-13 at the time. His 4-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk finished off a 10 minute drive in the fourth quarter and made the score 27-26, but the Colts scored with 0:17 remaining to pull out the win. Shealy’s season mark improved to 11-2-2 as the 4th-ranked Orange moved to 12-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the ACC. GOLF CHANC WILLIS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … tied for 56th individually with rounds of 81-78-84 (+27) as the Eagles finished tied for sixth at the AAC Fall Championship played at the 6,801-yard, par-72 Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca, Georgia October 17-18. The tournament was won by Dalton State. The next event for Reinhardt will be the Kinderlou Forest Spring Invitational February 20-21 in Valdosta. SWIMMING GRAYSON BREEDLOVE — Lenoir-Rhyne University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … finished 11th (1:02.85) in the 100-yard freestyle last Saturday at the Wingate Tri-Meet where the Bears’ competed with 6th-ranked Wingate and Catawba. MALLORY COOK — University of Montevallo (So., Adairsville HS) … was sixth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:23.82); eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.16); 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.94); and was on the seventh place 200-yard medley relay team last Saturday at Berry College as the Falcons faced Emmanuel College and Berry. Montevallo swims at the Sewanee Invitational Friday night and Saturday. HARPER POWELL — Florida Tech (So., Adairsville HS) … was on the Panthers’ fourth place 400-yard freestyle relay team; finished fifth (25.31) in the 50-yard freestyle; and was seventh (1:04.12) in the 100-yard backstroke last Friday in a 166-96 loss to 16th-ranked Lynn University. Florida Tech’s next meet is Wednesday, November 9 at home against Keiser University.

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets took advantage of three second half turnovers and stymied the Cass offense Friday night for a 30-16 home win over the Colonels. The win by Calhoun secured the Region 7-5A championship for 2022 and will send the Yellow Jackets to the Class 5A state playoffs as a No. 1-seed. Cass, who will be a No. 4-seed in the state playoffs, led 8-3 until late in the second quarter and trailed 9-8 at halftime. The Colonels fumbled the second half's opening kickoff and had two more turnovers over the final two periods as Calhoun pulled away to a 30-8 lead and an eventual 14-point win. Yellow Jackets’ kicker, Carlos Lopez, kicked a 31-yard field goal with 3:41 remaining in the first quarter to give Calhoun a 3-0 lead on their second offensive possession of the night. Cass answered with their ensuing drive, marching 56 yards on 10 plays to take an 8-3 lead with 10:21 remaining in the second quarter. Freshman quarterback Brodie McWhorter escaped pressure and flipped a short 8-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Henderson for the score. Cass added a two-point conversion when PAT holder Devin Henderson executed a fake and tossed a fade route pass to Maddix Young. After possession exchanges, Calhoun’s Cam Curtis had a nice punt return to the Cass 49-yard line and then a personal foul penalty on the Colonels set up the Yellow Jackets at the Cass 34-yard line. Seven plays later and following several wildcat formation runs by Emaree Winston, Calhoun’s Corbin Fuller capped the scoring drive with a 1-yard run. A two-point conversion pass was broken up by the Colonels’ defense leaving the score 9-8 with 2:18 remaining in the half. Cass drove back down the field and reached the Yellow Jackets’ 10-yard line, but a last-second field goal attempt was blocked as time expired in the half. On the opening kickoff of the second half, Cass misplayed a high-arcing kick and Calhoun recovered the ricochet at the Colonels’ 28-yard line. Two plays later, Yellow Jackets’ quarterback Trey Townsend hit receiver Dustin Kerns with a 27-yard touchdown strike. A PAT kick by Lopez gave Calhoun a 16-8 lead with 10:17 to go in the third quarter. Calhoun’s next scoring drive began late in the third quarter and finished at the beginning of the fourth. This time, Townsend fired a 28-yard touchdown pass to Curtis who made a one-handed stab over two Cass defenders in the back of the end zone. Lopez added the kick and Calhoun was ahead 23-8 with 11:50 remaining. Caden Williams added a 31-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to finish off a 68-yard drive and the Yellow Jackets had pulled away, 30-8 with 3:17 left in the game. Cass posted a final touchdown with 1:28 remaining. McWhorter connected with Jayshaun Brown-Whatley for a 36-yard touchdown pass. The same duo then hooked up for a two-point conversion pass resulting in a 30-16 final score. With their victory, Calhoun (7-3, 4-1) wins the 2022 Region 7-5A championship and will host the No. 4 seed from Region 8-5A on Saturday, November 12. Cass (4-6, 2-3) will open the Class 5A state playoffs on the road at Region 8-5A champion Jefferson. That first round game will also be on Saturday, November 12.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes closed out the regular season Friday night with a 39-14 win at Dalton to claim the No. 2-seed from Region 7-5A in the upcoming Class 5A state playoffs. With the No. 2-seed, Cartersville also secures a home game in the opening round. The Hurricanes led 18-14 at halftime. Ryan Johnson kicked a 40-yard field goal late in the opening period to give the Canes a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter. Malachi Jeffries followed with a one-yard touchdown plunge and Khristian Lando added a 31-yard rushing touchdown with about nine minutes left in the half. Collin Fletcher added a two-point conversion run following Jeffries’ touchdown and Johnson’s PAT kick helped Cartersville build an 18-0 advantage. Three minutes later, Dalton senior runningback Tyson Greenwade scored on a three-yard run and added a two-point run to narrow the Cartersville lead to 18-8. Later in the second period, Dalton quarterback Ethan Long connected with Luke Blanchard for a long scoring pass to make the score 18-14 at the intermission. The Catamounts’ PAT kick was blocked. Cartersville took control in the second half. Quarterback Paul Gamble scored on a 62-yard scamper that gave the Canes a 25-14 lead with just over five minutes left in the third period. Jeffries and Lando both added touchdown runs in the second half to complete the Hurricanes’ 39-14 victory. Dalton (5-5, 3-2) will be the No. 3-seed from Region 7-5A and have a road game in the opening round of the state playoffs. The Catamounts will play at the No. 2-seed from Region 8-5A on Saturday, November 12. Cartersville (9-1, 4-1) will be the No. 2-seed from Region 7-5A. The Hurricanes will host the No. 3-seed from Region 8-5A, also on Saturday, November 12.

Playing without 1,100-yard rusher Ethan Blome Friday night, Adairsville utilized a stingy defense and got two second half touchdown runs by Chris Roper for a 14-7 win at Bremen. The Adairsville victory earns the Tigers a home playoff game when the Class 3A state playoffs begin November 11. Bremen led 7-0 at halftime after posting the first half’s only points just shy of midway through the first quarter. Jonah Hatchett hauled in a touchdown pass and Bobby Campbell booted the PAT kick for the Blue Devils. Both defenses, along with turnovers and penalties, kept the score at 7-0 heading to the intermission. In the second half, Adairsville turned to the rushing game to outpower Bremen with Roper carrying much of the load. Roper, who eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season on the night, scored a pair of touchdowns and rushed for 212 yards on 27 carries. The senior’s 11-yard touchdown run tied the score 7-7 with 1:07 left in the third quarter. Cooper Souders made the first of his two PAT kicks. The Tigers took the lead late in the fourth quarter with the second rushing touchdown by Roper. His 4-yard run with 3:48 remaining turned out to be the margin of victory. Bremen had a final possession, but the Adairsville defense forced a turnover on downs and was able to close out the clock. Bremen slips to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (8-1, 6-0) hosts Coahulla Creek (7-2, 5-1) next Friday. A Tigers’ win would secure the 2022 region title and a No. 1-seed in the upcoming Class AAA state playoffs.

The Woodland Wildcats wrapped up their 2022 football season Thursday night with a 52-41 loss at Hiram. Isaiah Livsey scored three touchdowns for the Wildcats in the loss. Jaeden Smith, Brelace Williams, and Ray Glover also scored for Woodland. Both teams were eliminated from state playoff contention last week. The Hornets, who upset Calhoun earlier in the region schedule, finished the year 5-5 overall and 2-3 in Region 7-5A. Woodland, who will return the core of their roster next season, finished the year 1-9 overall and 0-5 in Region 7-5A.

The Woodland girls' and boys' cross country teams both won Region 7-5A championships Tuesday on their home campus course. Cartersville’s girls and boys both placed third while the Cass boys were fifth. The Cass girls did not field a full team score. Danielle Thayer (21:50.46) of Woodland finished runner-up individually just over 18 seconds behind winner Carolynn Dooley of Calhoun. Five other Lady Cats followed Thayer in the top ten. Olivia Berry (23:30.71), Miranda Pelow (23:02.63), Emma Segars (23:14.95), Abby George (23:15.52), and Autumn Lottner (23:17.96) turned in top performances for Woodland. Anna Grace Boone (23:27.28) finished eleventh and Leyla Booth (23:35.55) was twelfth for the Cartersville girls. Cass had three girls compete, led by a fourteenth place finish by Scarlett Hale. The Woodland boys had four runners to finish in the top seven individually including Tyler Jones (16:45.45) who finished first. Drew Thayer (18:03.44) was fifth, Landon McSwain (18:09.39) sixth, and Juan Mendoza (18:12.27) finished seventh. Cartersville’s Malachi Vosburgh (17:26.95) was runner-up to Jones. He was followed by fellow Canes Hayden Mitchell (18:23.59) and Barrett Stepp (18:33.90) who finished eleventh and twelfth, respectively. Critton Gearhart (19:05.29) was the top Cass finisher in 16th place. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS REGION 6-AAA RUNNER-UP The Adairsville boys team finished second in the Region 6-AAA Championship meet Tuesday at LaFayette. The region title was won by Bremen. Griffin Bozeman led the Tigers with a sixth place individual finish. Eli Pearson was 13th and Dutch Hernandez was 16th for Adairsville. The Lady Tigers did not field a full scoring roster, but Callie Viktora placed third individually and Caroline OKelley placed eleventh.

The Cartersville and Adairsville volleyball teams both had their seasons come to a close last Saturday with second round state playoff losses. Cartersville, the No. 2-seed from Region 7-5A, fell at Greater Atlanta Christian in four sets while Adairsville, the No. 3-seed from Region 6-3A, lost at Oconee County in straight sets. In a closely contested match, the Lady Canes won the opening set at GAC 26-24 before falling 25-23, 25-20, and 25-18 over the final three sets. Ailee England had 14 kills and 12 digs. Lauren Lawson also had 14 kills each for Cartersville. Addison Marisko had three blocks. Mia Nicklas contributed 14 digs and Lily Gochee totaled 34 assists for the Hurricanes. Greater Atlanta Christian (25-11) advanced to the state quarterfinals. Cartersville’s season ends with a 29-17 record. At Oconee County, Adairsville lost 25-15, 25-15, 25-12. Richlyn Blair had five kills for the Lady Tigers. Annie McCormick was credited with eight blocks and Adysen Garvey finished with 11 digs. The Warriors improved to 46-7 on the season and moved on to the state quarterfinals. Adairsville’s season ends with a 16-23-2 mark.

Cass softball saw a 5-1 fifth inning lead evaporate Friday afternoon in one big inning by Chattahoochee as the Lady Colonels were eliminated at the Loganville Super Regional, 10-7. Chattahoochee rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-5 lead and then held off Cass challenges in the sixth and seventh innings to advance to the Super Regional finals against host Loganville. The Cougars took advantage of four walks and two errors by Cass in the big inning. The rally by Chattahoochee included only two hits. Cass scored three times in the top of the first inning on a two-run triple by Reese Howard and an RBI single by Bailey York. Ansley Hight hit a two run homer in the third inning for a 5-0 Cass advantage. In addition to Chattahoochee’s fifth inning surge, the Cougars added single runs in the third and sixth innings. Emma Gibson (4.1 IP, 7R, 3ER, 3H, 8BB) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Alexis Woods (1.2 IP, 3ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) pitched in relief. Hight finished with two hits including her two-run blast. Howard also finished with a pair of hits. York (RBI), Harlee Thomason, Darianna Sosa, Haylee Dishmon, and Woods had the other Cass hits. Braelyn Franklin added one RBI. The Colonels’ season ends with a 10-21 record.

The Woodland softball reached the championship round of the Villa Rica Super Regional Friday evening needing two wins over host Villa Rica to advance, but fell in Game 6 of the tournament 13-4. Villa Rica, who now advances to the Class 5A State Tournament Elite Eight in Columbus October 26-29, started fast scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning on four hits and a Woodland error. They added four more runs in the second inning to go up 8-0. Woodland put together its own four hit frame in the third to narrow the margin to 8-2 but never got any closer. Villa Rica (28-5) tacked on an additional runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to secure their five inning victory. Toree Wofford (5 IP, 4ER, 7H, 0BB, 3K) was the winning pitcher for Villa Rica. She also powered their offense with a double, three home runs, and four RBIs. Wofford had solo home runs in the second and third innings and her two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth ended the game by run rule. Addie Orr also had four RBIs with a double and a home run. Jordan Hammonds had two hits for Woodland. Peyton Dorn, Kamryn Smith (RBI), Cambrie Carrington (2 RBIs), Haley Collum, and Alana Carnes had one hit each in the loss. Collum (1 IP, 4R, 1ER, 4H) was tagged with the pitching loss. Ashlyn Dowdy (3.1 IP, 9ER, 10H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched for Woodland. Woodland’s season ends with a 17-17 record and a runner-up finish in the Super Regional. WOODLAND 14, WINDER-BARROW 5 Woodland softball advanced to the finals of the Villa Rica Super Regional in Class 5A Friday afternoon with a 14-5 win over Winder-Barrow. The win for the Lady Cats was redemption for an earlier loss to the Lady Bulldoggs in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament. Woodland finished with ten hits and got a solid five inning pitching performance from freshman Haley Collum. The Lady Cats’ hurler scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out five. Jordan Hammonds had two hits with five RBIs in the Woodland win. Peyton Dorn had two hits with four RBIs and Elizabeth Hartsfield also collected two hits. Cambrie Carrington ignited the Lady Cats offense with a first inning, two-run homer while Mackenzie Araya, Collum, and Bailey Sakacsi (2 RBIs) added one hit each. Alana Carnes chipped in with one RBI. The Woodland win put the Lady Cats in the Super Regional finals where they needed two wins over host Villa Rica.

Adairsville’s Chris Roper scored six touchdowns Friday night as the Tigers pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 42-28 win over visiting Gordon Lee. Roper had five rushing touchdowns, caught one touchdown pass, and even added a two-point conversion run. Gordon Lee traded scores with the Tigers through three quarters. Roper, set up by multiple long runs by Ethan Blome, had scoring runs of 48-yard, 10-yards, and 18-yards in the first three periods. He also hauled in a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jonathan Gough just before the intermission. Roper’s two-point conversion run gave Adairsville a 21-14 lead at halftime. Gordon Lee’s Kade Cowan tossed three touchdown passes in that same stretch. He had a 22-yarder in the opening period and had a 20-yarder to Nate Dunfree midway through the second quarter that briefly gave the Trojans a 14-13 lead. In the third quarter Cowan added another scoring pass that tied the score 21-21. Dunfree added a four-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that knotted the score at 28-all at the time. Roper’s two touchdown runs in the fourth quarter helped the Tigers pull away. The senior slot back had a 14-yard touchdown run and a 3-yard scoring run that lifted the Tigers to their 42-28 win. The loss drops Gordon Lee to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (7-1, 5-0) travels to Bremen next Friday.
