Cartersville products Chanc Willis and Dalton Henson, both sophomores at Reinhardt University, helped the Eagles to a tie for thirteenth place this week at the NAIA Men’s Golf Championship in Silvis, Illinois. The 72-hole national championship tournament was conducted at the 6,691-yard, par-71 TPC at Deere Run, site of the annual John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour. Keiser University won the 2022 title with a four round total of 1130 (6-under-par). Dalton State (GA) was national runner-up with a 3-under-par 1133. Bellevue University (NE) (1148), Houston-Victoria (1155), and Ottawa University (AZ) (1157) rounded out the top five teams. Reinhardt was one of four Georgia schools to finish in the top thirteen. Point University (1160) was 7th and Coastal Georgia (1172) was 12th. Coastal Georgia is led by head coach Mike Cook, a Cartersville High product as well. Jack Dudeck (The Master’s University) and Jakob Stavag Stubhaug (Keiser University) shared the individual title with 72-hole totals of 276 (8-under-par). Willis shot 69-77-72-76 to finish tied for 51st. Henson finished with rounds of 79-75-77-76 to finish 87th. Reinhardt was led by Hunter Clay who fired rounds of 70-68-73-72 for the Eagles and placed tenth.

A pair of former Cartersville High golfers — Chanc Willis and Dalton Henson — have helped Reinhardt University’s men’s team to a tie for eleventh place through the first three rounds of the 2022 NAIA National Championship Tournament. The tournament is being held at TPC at Deere Run (6,691-yards, par-71) in Silvis, Illinois with the final round Friday. Willis, who is tied for 42nd individually in the field that started with 156 players, has rounds of 69-77-72 — 218 through the first 54 holes. Henson has rounds of 79-75-77 — 231 and is tied for 90th individually. Hunter Clay leads the Eagles through the first three rounds (70-68-73—211) and is tied for 12th. Brooks Gineris (71-77-73 — 221) is tied for 54th and Jack Haller (77-76-73 — 226) is tied for 75th. Keiser University is at the top of the team leaderboard with a 9-under-par 843. Dalton State is two shots back at 845 and Bellevue University (Nebraska) is third at 857. Point University (858) and Ottawa University (Arizona) (860) round out the top five. Houston-Victoria (864) and Wayland Baptist (864) are tied for sixth. USC-Beaufort (866), British Columbia (867), and Texas Wesleyan (871) complete the top ten heading into the final round. Seventeen teams and 99 individual players made the 36-hole cut.

HOUSTON – Cartersville product and University of Houston graduate pitcher Hannah Todd wrapped up her collegiate career with National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Central Region honors, the organization announced on Thursday, May 19. The right-handed pitcher earned her first All-Region award after finishing the season with a team-best 2.54 ERA, a team-high 11 wins and team-high 36 appearances while throwing seven complete games and posting three total shutouts, two of which were solo. Todd pitched even better against the top 75 teams in the country, posting a 2.42 ERA against Top 75 RPI teams with four complete games, a save and an opponent batting average of .239. Two of her complete games against Top 75 opponents needed extra innings to be decided. Todd's career-high 9.0 inning complete game against Boise State was the start of a nine-game home winning streak for the Cougars and her 8.0 inning complete game against Texas A&M helped catapult the Cougars into the American Athletic Conference Softball Championship. Todd finished her career with a 14-16 record, 3.70 ERA, 195.0 innings pitched and 96 strikeouts. Todd pitched one season at North Carolina before playing three seasons at Kansas. Todd's career-best season in 2022 was the only season where she donned the Cougars' scarlet and white.

Cartersville High product Buck Brumlow and the University of Georgia men’s golf team qualified for the NCAA National Championship Tournament Wednesday with a fourth place team finish at the Bryan, Texas Regional at Traditions Club. Brumlow finished the 54-hole Regional with a tie for 29th place individually. He was 4-over-par for the tournament with rounds of 72-68-80 — 220. Other Bulldogs’ individual final scores included: Maxwell Ford (T5, -3, 213), Trent Phillips (T12, -1, 215), Ben Van Wyk (T39, +6, 222), and Nic Cassidy (T45, +8, 224) in the 76-player field. Arizona (-13) won the Bryan Regional followed by Pepperdine (-8), Texas A&M (-4), Georgia (-1), and Kansas (+3). Those five teams each qualify for the NCAA National Championship Tournament May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Thirty teams qualified for the NCAA Championship from six regionals across the country. The Championship will consist of three days of stroke play on Friday, May 27 thru Sunday, May 29 (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play on Monday, May 30 to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, May 31, followed by finals on Wednesday, June 1.

Georgia Highlands College baseball was eliminated from the post-season Wednesday dropping the second straight game of the Chargers’ best-of-three Appalachian District Championship series at Walters State CC. Walters State won the first game Tuesday 3-2 and clinched the series Wednesday afternoon with an 11-6 victory. After the Senators took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning Wednesday, the Chargers narrowed the margin to 4-3 over the next three frames. Zayd Brannigan hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Ethan Anderson hit a solo home run in the fourth. Walters State extended the lead to 5-3 in the sixth and took control with a five-run seventh inning building a 10-3 lead. Anderson hit another home run in the eighth for two more Chargers’ runs and delivered an RBI single in the ninth, but GHC came up five runs short. Senators’ pitcher Matt Harrell struck out 13 and tossed a nine inning, complete-game for the Walters State pitching win. Georgia Highlands utilized five different hurlers including Zachary Murray (0.2 IP, 4ER, 3H, 4BB), Hunter Goodwin (5.1 IP, 3ER, 6H, 1BB, 2K), Cason Rich (1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB), Caleb Garner (1 IP, 1ER, 2H) and Zack Valentine (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K). Anderson finished with three hits for the Chargers’ offense including a pair of home runs and four RBIs. Brannigan homered and doubled for a pair of RBIs. Max Kops contributed a double. The Cartersville High boys golf team finished third at the 2022 GHSA Class 5A State Championships. The 36-hole tournament was conducted at the 6,700-yard, par-72 Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear. The Canes shot 296 Monday and 311 Tuesday for a 607 (31-over-par) total. Starr’s Mill won the Class 5A championship with an impressive 578 (2-over-par) total. Wayne County was second at 599 (23-over-par). Woodward Academy (+32) and Northgate (+33) rounded out the top five teams. Jake Lawson (71-75, +2) placed ninth individually to lead Cartersville. Jake Wehunt tied for 21st (73-81, +10). Camden Meadows (75-80, +11) and Andrew Lutjens (77-78, +11) tied for 24th. Brody Tidwell (77-79, +12) tied for 26th and Anderson McCary (86-79, +21) was 40th in the 79 player field.

Georgia Highlands lost the first game in their best-of-three Appalachian District Championship series at No. 1-ranked Walters State Tuesday afternoon, 4-3. The game was tied 2-2 through four innings before the host Senators grabbed a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. David Smith hit a solo home run for the Chargers in the top of the eighth to narrow the lead to 4-3, but GHC got no closer. Gage Vailes was the tough-luck losing pitcher for Georgia Highlands. He went the distance and gave up only three earned runs on seven hits and three walks in eight innings. Conner Todaro produced the 16th-ranked Chargers first run with a first inning solo home run. David Smith drove in Max Kops with the second GHC run in the top of the third inning with a groundout. In addition to the two solo home runs, the Chargers had six other hits. Ben Olson had a triple. Kops, Parker Poteet, Caden Smith, Zayd Brannigan, and Mick Moody added one hit each for Georgia Highlands (44-10). Walters State CC improved to 56-5 on the season. R.B. Clyburn of Cartersville shot rounds of 67-75 to finish third at the 105th Yamaha Atlanta Open Monday and Tuesday at Echelon Golf Club in Alpharetta. His 142 (2-under-par) total finished five shots back on the 7,067, par-72 course. Clyburn held the first round lead but slipped to third on the final day behind 2022 champion Ted Moon of TPC At Sugarloaf and fellow amateur Brock Hoover. Moon fired a 66 Tuesday to finish 7-under-par. Hoover shot a pair of 70s to finish 4-under-par. The tournament field included 156 professionals and amateurs. BRANTON, HOSICK REACH MATCH PLAY AT 7TH U.S. AMATEUR FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP Chad Branton of Cartersville and Kyle Hosick of Calhoun advanced to the match play portion of the 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship played at Country Club of Birmingham. The duo shot rounds of 65 and 68 in the stroke play portion of the tournament Saturday and Sunday to earn a spot in a 10-team playoff for the final nine spots in match play. A par on the first playoff hole earned Branton/Hosick the 32nd seed in match play that began Monday. The locals fell 4 and 2 in the Round of 32 to top seeds Torey Edwards and Bret Parker of Long Beach, California and Alpine, Utah.

In professional baseball this past week, Connor Justus continued to be productive at the plate for the Triple-A Charleston (West Virginia) Dirty Birds while Sam Howard was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers organization. Howard was placed on the Tigers’ 40-man roster, but has been assigned to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens for now. On the pro hardwoods of The Basketball League, Cartersville product AJ Mosby and the Albany Patroons continue to lead their division heading into the home stretch of the regular season. In college softball, former Hurricanes pitcher Hannah Todd finished off her grad student season with the University of Houston while collegiate baseball pitcher Logan Martin and Davis Williams earned all-conference honors. Former Cass standout Steven Spell played a role in Young Harris College’s Peach Belt Conference tournament championship and local golfers compete in their runs at NCAA and NAIA national titles. PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A affiliate, Detroit Tigers; 9th-yr. pro; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers last week after being designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 29-year-old southpaw has been added to the Tigers’ 40-man roster but has currently been assigned to the Triple-A Mud Hens. Howard made three appearances with the Pirates in late April totaling two innings with a 9.00 ERA. CONNOR JUSTUS — Charleston Dirty Birds (Triple-A, Independent; 7th-yr. pro; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS) … in six games last week — three at home against the High Point Rockers and three at the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs — the shortstop hit safely in every game and was 8-for-23 at the plate including a pair of doubles, two walks, four RBIs, and three runs scored. The Dirty Birds are 11-11 and currently third in the Triple-A Atlantic League’s South Division trailing the Gastonia Honey Hunters by five games. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Tampa Tarpons (Class A; NY Yankees affiliate; 5th-yr. pro; Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-15 last week in five games at the Dunedin Blue Jays with a double, six walks, and two RBIs. The catcher is currently hitting .257 with three homers and 13 RBIs through 23 games in the Florida State League. The Tarpons (14-18) host the St. Lucie Mets this week. SOFTBALL HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … was the pitcher of record in both of the Cougars American Athletic Conference Tournament games last Thursday and Friday in Greenville, North Carolina. Houston beat Tulsa 5-2 in the opening round before falling to top-seeded UCF 4-2 Friday in extra innings in the single-elimination semifinals. Todd worked four innings in relief Thursday facing 21 batters for her 11th win of the year. The righty gave up two earned runs on five hits, two walks, and two hit batters. She struck out two. She then worked 2-1/3 innings in relief in the loss to eventual tournament champion UCF allowing two earned runs on five hits, two walks (one intentional) with one strikeout. Houston finished its season 27-27-1 and was not selected to the NCAA Tournament. Todd finished her grad season 11-10 in 36 appearances. She worked 127 innings recording 64 strikeouts with a 2.54 ERA. BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made a start last Friday against visiting Alabama and worked into the sixth inning but received no decision as the 19th-ranked Tigers went on to defeat the Crimson Tide 3-2. Barnett allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks while facing 22 batters in 5-1/3 innings. He recorded four strikeouts. The right hand hurler is 2-1 this season in 15 appearances and 10 starts with a 4.13 ERA and 59 strikeouts. Auburn (35-16, 15-11 SEC) plays Samford Tuesday in Hoover before hosting Kentucky in a three game conference series that begins Thursday. KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (So., Woodland HS) … faced just four batters in the fifth inning last Tuesday but was saddled with the pitching loss as the Hawks fell in the championship round of the Gulf South Conference tournament to Lee University, 19-8. Jinks allowed two earned runs on three hits as Shorter fell behind 6-5. The southpaw finished the season 2-3 in 14 appearances with a 7.13 ERA. The Hawks finished the season with a 29-22 mark. LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee, University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … received the Southern Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year award. The right-hander, who also earned first-team all-conference honors, finished the season with a 3.89 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He posted 98 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings. Martin recorded nine-plus strikeouts in eight of his 11 appearances. He announced over the weekend that he will continue his collegiate career at the University of Kentucky. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Jr., Cass HS) … was only 1-for-11 at the plate in three games over the last weekend, but the third basemen and the Mountain Lions won all three games to win the Peach Belt Conference tournament championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division 2 Southeast Regional at Wingate, North Carolina. Spell walked twice in the tournament, scored twice, and drove in two runs. Heading into the national tournament, he is hitting .323 and has started all 48 games for the Mountain Lions with three home runs and 31 RBIs. YHC (38-17) opens the regional Thursday against 5th-ranked Wingate. The regional, which continues through Saturday, also includes 9th-ranked Columbus State and Belmont Abbey. PRESTON WELCHEL — Coastal Alabama South (So., Cartersville HS) … in three playoff games during the Alabama Community College Conference tournament, the Sun Chiefs’ outfielder went 5-for-9 with a pair of home runs, three walks, and three RBIs. Through Saturday’s victory, Welchel is batting .342 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs in 54 games. He also has nine stolen bases. Note: Coastal South had tourney wins Sunday and Monday over Coastal-North and Wallace State-Hanceville before falling to Wallace State-Dothan Monday night. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … shot an opening round, 2-over-par 74 helping the 13th-ranked Bulldogs to fourth place through the first round of the NCAA Bryant Regional being held at the 7,146-yard, par-72 Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. Brumlow is tied for 36th individually in the 75-player field. With two rounds remaining, Georgia (7-under team score) trails Arizona (12-under), Pepperdine (9-under), and Texas A&M (8-under). Georgia seeks to top five finish in the regional to advance to the NCAA National Championship Tournament May 27-June 1 on the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. SMU (Even par), Oregon State (1-over-par), and Kansas (1-over-par) hold positions five through seven in the 18-hole standings. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion College (Sr., Woodland HS) … placed third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump at the Carius/Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central University last Thursday and Friday in Napierville, Illinois. Knowles cleared 23 feet, 1.75 inches in the long jump and cleared 43 feet, 3-3/4 inches in the triple jump finals. STEPHEN SMITH — Kennesaw State University (So., Cass HS) … cleared 15 feet, 3-3/4 inches to finish third in pole vault at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship last Friday in Jacksonville, Florida. The Owls finished the meet as conference runner-up behind Liberty University.

The Cartersville High School boys golf team is in second place at the midway point of the 2022 GHSA Class 5A State Championships. The 36-hole tournament is being hosted on the 6,700-yard, par-72 course at Okefenokee Country Club in Blackshear. Each team fields six starters with the best four scores counting toward the team total. Starr’s Mill has the lead following Monday’s 18 holes with a 2-under-par team total. Cartersville is ten shots back and next at 8-over-par. The Canes are trailed by Woodward Academy (13-over), Northgate (16-over) and Wayne County (17-over). The 12-team finals field will conclude the Championship Tuesday. Cartersville’s Jake Lawson shot a 1-under-par 71 to lead the Hurricanes in Round 1. He is currently tied for second in the individual race with Will Coffman and Lee Smith of Ware County. The trio trails tournament leader Thomas Reininger of Starr’s Mill after 18 holes. Reininger fired a 5-under-par 67 Monday. Lawson was followed on the Canes’ scorecard by Jake Wehunt (+1, 73) who is tied for seventh, Camden Meadows (+3, 75, T-14) Brody Tidwell (+5, 77, T-22) and Andrew Lutjens (+5, 77, T-22). Anderson McCary (+14 T-57) shot an 86.

More than 20 local track and field athletes competed this past weekend at the Georgia High School Association Championships in both Columbus and Carrollton with a trio of those competitors placing fourth in their respective events and classifications. Cartersville, Woodland, and Cass had athletes at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus for the Class 5A Championships. Adairsville had three athletes at Grisham Stadium in Carrollton for the Class 3A Championships. Cartersville’s Eric Toviave placed fourth in the 300M hurdles (38.47) and took home a fifth place finish in the 110M hurdles (14.52). Noah Baer of Woodland placed fourth in the Class 5A boys pole vault by clearing the 13-00 mark. In Carrollton, Adairsville’s Tre Mitchell placed fourth in Class 3A in the 400M dash (50.52). Others earning state championship points were Cartersville’s Anna Grace Boone. She cleared 5-00 in the high jump for a seventh place finish and the Woodland boys 4x800M relay team placed eighth in 8:20.18. That Wildcats’ team was comprised of McKinley Chappell, Tyler Jones, Drew Thayer, and JT Forsyth. The Cartersville girls placed 36th with Woodland and Cass not scoring. Southwest DeKalb won the boys Class 5A title followed by Blessed Trinity and Calhoun. The Cartersville boys were 20th with Woodland placing 25th. The Adairsville boys placed 30th in Class 3A which was won by Westminster. Hart County was 3A runner-up followed by Southeast Bulloch. Westminster also won the Class 3A girls championship followed by Sandy Creek and Greater Atlanta Christian.
