Woodland and Hebron Christian Academy traded scores Friday night, but it was the visiting Lions who separated late in the third period for an eventual 34-24 non-region win. Hebron Christian quarterback, Gavin Hall, ran for three touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Class A Private Lions. The sophomore signal caller finished the night with 154 passing yards and rushed for another 120 yards. Hall’s touchdown pass was a 26-yard connection with King Joseph Edwards in the first quarter as the Lions tied the score 7-7. After two of Hall’s touchdown runs gave the Lions a 21-14 advantage, Ashton Smith picked off a Woodland pass and returned it for a touchdown to build a 27-14 lead. Asa James, who finished with 155 rushing yards on 25 attempts, scored the game’s first touchdown for Woodland on a 1-yard run. The Wildcats later tied the score 14-14 with a 59-yard touchdown pass from Brelace Williams to Harlin Morris. Woodland kicker Chris Sanchez kicked a 36-yard field goal with 30 seconds remaining in the first half that sent the teams to halftime with Hebron Christian leading 27-17. Williams and Morris connected again with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. The 22-yard pass play left the Wildcats down by three points, 27-24. In the waning seconds of the third quarter, the Lions regained their 10-point lead. Hall scampered in from 10-yards out with just 10 seconds remaining in the period. The two teams played a scoreless fourth quarter although the Wildcats had an opportunity to pull back within one score. Asa James broke off a 48-yard run early in the fourth quarter. While the senior running back didn't score, he still set up the Wildcats with a goal-to-go situation. On fourth down from the 3-yard line, Woodland head coach Tony Plott opted to go for the touchdown. The Lions got good penetration on the key play, however, and dropped James behind the line of scrimmage leaving the Wildcats empty handed. Hebron Christian Academy evened its season record at 1-1. Class 6A Sequoyah’s run game proved to be too much for the Cass Colonels Friday night as the visiting Chiefs pulled away in the second half for a 37-23 win at Cochran Stadium. Sequoyah, combining an efficient wing-T attack with a mixture of between the tackles Power-I plays, rolled up 295 rushing yards on 46 attempts in the non-region victory. He had short keepers from 1- and 2-yards out to go with an impressive 30-yard scramble play late in the first half that helped Sequoyah regain the lead at the intermission, 21-16. He finished the night with 56 rushing yards. Jackson Hancock, who ran for 129 yards in the first half, gave the Chiefs a 7-0 lead with an 11-yard run to cap an opening eight play, 50-yard drive and Javon Salazar scored on a 7-yard run that was set up by an interception and return by Hancock. Cass kicker Juan Parajito booted a 35-yard field goal on the Colonels’ first possession to make the score 7-3. After Sequoyah took a 14-3 advantage, Cass scored on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter to take a 16-14 lead. Ian Lowe knifed through the middle of the Sequoyah defense for a 30-yard touchdown run that made the score 14-10 and capped a five-play, 52-yard drive for the Colonels. Then on their next possession, Cass’ Karmanie Evans found the end zone on a 6-yard run. A holding penalty on the ensuing extra point attempt however, pushed a second attempt further back that was missed. Two touchdowns and a safety gave the Chiefs a 37-16 lead with 10:02 left in the game. Four minutes later, Cass quarterback Devin Henderson connected with Tino Jones for a 20-yard touchdown but it would be the final Colonels’ score with just over seven minutes left in the game. Henderson finished the night 12-for-19 passing for 153 yards. He threw for one touchdown and was picked off twice. The sophomore signal caller also rushed for 72 yards. Sacovie White caught five passes for 61 yards and Evans contributed 41 yards rushing on 12 attempts. Sequoyah (2-1) will have a bye week prior to opening region play against Johns Creek. Cass (1-2) will try to snap a two-game skid next Friday when they travel to Temple in another non-region matchup.

Cartersville volleyball made easy work Thursday night in a straight sets victory at Villa Rica. The Canes won all three sets in a scheduled best-of-five match 25-8, 25-13, and 25-19. The regular season rematch, which saw Cartersville win earlier in the year, was also a rematch of the 2020 Class AAAAA state tournament first round. Lauren Lawson led the Cartersville offense, compiling 13 kills in the match. Ailee England added seven kills, seven digs and two aces. Mason Cline chipped in with five kills, while London Moultrie and Tennessee Abernathy wound up with four apiece. Abby Allen paced the Canes with six aces. Lily Gochee put forth a well-round effort, finishing with 27 assists, six digs, four aces and two kills.

Woodland scored six times over the Lady Cats’ final two offensive frames Thursday night to put visiting Cass away, 9-2, in Region 7-AAAAA play. Adairsville dropped a six-inning decision to Ringgold and Cartersville was swept in a Region 7-AAAAA doubleheader at Calhoun. WOODLAND 9, CASS 2 The Lady Cats broke open a one-run game Thursday night by scoring six times over their final two offensive frames to put the visiting Cass Lady Colonels away, 9-2. Woodland pounded out 15 hits while pitcher Lainey Baker limited Cass to only two unearned runs on four hits and two walks. Baker recorded nine strikeouts. Baker was also productive at the plate. She finished with three hits including a home run and three RBis. Dylynn Motes (RBI), Cassie Jones (RBI), Jordan Hammonds (RBI), Michiah Hicks, and Alana Carnes added two hits each for the Lady Cats. Cambrie Carrington (RBI) and Bailey Sakacsi finished with one hit. Saydee Najarro had two hits for the Colonels. Eryn Lee and Ansley Hight added one hit apiece. Woodland improved to 3-7-1 on the season and 3-4 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Lady Cats will host tournament games Friday and Saturday for the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. Cass (4-5, 2-4) hosts a doubleheader with Blessed Trinity next Thursday. RINGGOLD 15, ADAIRSVILLE 7 In a battle of Region 6-AAA Tigers, Ringgold won at Adairsville Thursday night 15-7. Ringgold led 8-4 through three innings and added on each inning to close the game out in six innings. Adairsville scored its final three runs in the fifth inning to narrow the margin to 10-7, but Ringgold’s five-spot in the sixth led to the eight-run, mercy rule decision. Two Ringgold pitchers — Taylor Layne and Aubrey Lakin — combined to limit Adairsville to just four hits. They did issue six walks, however. Ringgold’s Ava Raby, Emma Stevenson, Riley Burdette, and Autumn Green combined for nine hits and 11 RBIs. Kelsey Gleason had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs to pace the Adairsville offense. Makayla Wade had a hit and one RBI. McKenzie Pullam added the other Adairsville base hit. Ringgold improved to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in region play. Adairsville (4-6, 2-4) travels to North Murray Wednesday. CALHOUN 15, CARTERSVILLE 0 Calhoun needed only two offensive frames to defeat visiting Cartersville Thursday night, 15-0, in three innings. The Yellow Jackets scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and plated ten more in the second while shutting out the Lady Canes in the run-rule shortened game. Lyla West, Molly Banks, and Macy Brown all homered for Calhoun who out hit Cartersville eight to two. Kiley Arnold doubled and Ava Perkins added a base hit for the Hurricanes. CALHOUN 6, CARTERSVILLE 5 Cartersville rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning in Thursday night’s second game at Calhoun to knot the score at 5-all, but the Yellow Jackets responded with Malysha Winston’s walk-off, solo home run in the bottom of the inning for a 6-5 win. Kiley Arnold was the tough-luck losing pitcher for Cartersville despite allowing only three earned runs on seven hits and a walk. She struck out three. On offense, Arnold finished with two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Mikey Lewis had two hits including a double. Ava Perkins homered and had two RBIs. Jordan Bishop doubled. Campbell Rogers, Reese Dumas, and Marly Pruitt each produced one base hit for the Canes. Calhoun improved to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cartersville (4-6, 2-4) will play Cherokee and Creekview on the road Saturday in Canton.

The Adairsville softball team lost a back-and-forth, high-scoring Region 6-AAA matchup Wednesday night at Murray County, 14-13. The Tigers led 8-2 through 3-1/2 innings, but the host Indians came back with a dozen runs over their last four offensive frames, including a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win. The top five batters in the Murray County order — Brooklyn Gonzalez, Nicole Martin, Alyssa Usrey, Natalie O’Neal, and Kylie Usrey — combined for nine hits and 10 RBIs for the Indians. O’Neal had the walk-off, game winner in the final inning. Kelsey Gleason had three hits for Adairsville. McKenzie Pullum finished with a triple, double, and three RBIs. Jenna Young had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs. Alissa Winters had two hits and one RBI. Brie Patterson contributed a pair of hits while Chelsea Bates added a hit and two RBIs. Murray County improved to 4-8 overall and 2-3 in region play. Adairsville (4-5, 2-3) returns to action next Wednesday at North Murray.

Adairsville volleyball split a pair of matches at Hiram Tuesday night defeating the host Hornets but losing to East Paulding. Both matches went the full three sets. Adairsville lost the opening set to Hiram 25-19 before winning the final two sets 25-10 and 15-3. Richlyn Blair had five kills and four service aces for the Tigers. Kaylee Jordan finished with five kills and three digs. Lexie Childers contributed eight assists and four digs. Annie McCormick added four digs, three assists, and two aces. Adairsville won the opening set against East Paulding 25-16, but dropped the final two sets 25-16 and 18-16. Autumn Henderson had six kills, three digs, and one ace. Blair had five kills, one ace, and one block. Bailey Weaver and Madison Flemons totaled seven and six digs, respectively. McCormick contributed six assists, two digs, and one kill. The Woodland High School Elite Athlete of the Month for August 2021 is Lainey Baker. A senior pitcher and outfielder for the Lady Cats softball team, Baker recently surpassed the 500 career strikeout milestone. The daughter of Beth and Bradley Baker, Lainey has 40 strikeouts this season in 23-1/3 innings in the pitching circle. She has a 3.30 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. At the plate, Baker carries a .333 batting average and a 1.111 SLG% with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. An excellent student, Baker is ranked ninth in her graduating class with a 4.0 GPA. She has committed to continue her education and playing career at Columbus State University. “Lainey is an extremely high character player,” said Lady Cats’ head coach Matt Montgomery. “She has worked her way back from a back injury that sidelined her for most of the spring and summer. She has worked extremely hard to get back on the field and rejoin her teammates.” The August 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month for Cass High School is Eryn Lee. A senior on the Colonels softball team, Lee leads the team with a .444 batting average and has been a threat on the base paths with five stolen bases in the early season. Eryn, the daughter of James and Kristina Lee, is credited by the Cass coaching staff for her demeanor and the ability to hold her teammates accountable in a positive way. She is loved and respected by all her teammates and coaches. Lee also takes care of business in the classroom with a 4.0 GPA. She will continue her playing career at Reinhardt University. Mia Nicklas is the August 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cartersville High School. A junior Libero and defensive specialist for the Lady Canes volleyball team, Nicklas is the daughter of Jim and Heather Nicklas. A co-captain on the 2021 team, Nicklas is credited by head coach Alicen Pearson for going above and beyond the expected in her team role. “Mia keeps the players and coaches on task. She is driven to be our best on and off the court. She demonstrates her drive and willingness to exceed by being a role model for others. She is also always giving encouragement and positive feedback to others,” said coach Pearson. “We all dream of having a Mia on our team or in our class,” Pearson continued. “She is the ideal athlete and student.” Nicklas has ben an all-A Honor Roll student in first through tenth grades. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) … the Pirates activated the southpaw Saturday and he made his first MLB appearance since July 9. Howard pitched the eighth inning in a 13-0 home loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. He gave up three earned runs on four hits and a walk including a two-run home run to Dylan Carlson. For the season, the 28-year-old is 2-2 in 39 appearances with a 6.46 ERA in 30.2 innings with 43 strikeouts. Pittsburgh (48-83) is fifth in the National League Central trailing the division-leading Brewers by 31 games. CONNOR JUSTUS — Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (6th-year pro; Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville HS)… went 2-for-8 in starts Thursday and Sunday last week for the Shrimp at the Norfolk Tides. Lawrence, who was named the Jags 2021 opening day starter at quarterback, completed 11 of 12 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns with a 154.5 passer rating Saturday in his final preseason tune-up. Jacksonville won at Dallas, 34-14. Lawrence threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Pharoah Cooper and a 4-yard toss to Laviska Shenault Jr. The No. 1 overall choice played into the second quarter with the Jaguars’ first unit while the Cowboys sat their starters and several key reserves. Lawrence left the game with 11:42 remaining in the second quarter. Jacksonville opens the season in two weeks against the Texans. MILLER FORRISTALL — Tennessee Titans (1st-year pro; Cartersville HS) . . . saw action but did not catch a pass in the Titans’ 27-24 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears. The Adairsville softball team captured a 7-4 non-region win Saturday at Armuchee in Rome. The Tigers took a 4-2 lead in the second inning and extended their lead to 7-2 in the fourth before holding on for a three-run victory. Jordan Clay (5 IP, 3ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K) and Chelsea Bates (2 IP, 1ER, 0H, 1BB, 3K) combined for the Tigers in the pitching circle. Jenna Young led four Adairsville hitters with two hits apiece. Young’s hits included a home run and four RBIs. Taylor Evans and Riley Mounger had two hits and one RBI each. Clay also finished with two base hits. Makayla Wade (double), Brie Patterson, and McKenzie Pullam (double) had the other Lady Tigers’ hits. The loss dropped Armuchee to a 2-7-1 record on the season. Adairsville (3-4) travels to Murray County for a Region 6-AAA matchup Tuesday.

Adairsville junior slot back Chris Roper was able to stretch the nose of the football just far enough to touch the end zone pylon on a two-point conversion attempt Friday night as the Tigers edged visiting Cass in overtime, 29-28. The two-point conversion pass play to Roper from sophomore quarterback Jonathan Gough set off a celebration on the home side of the stadium and on the home sideline as the Tigers moved to 2-0 on the season. Roper’s six yard run in overtime cut the Cass lead to 28-27 and Adairsville head coach Eric Bishop decided to go for the win on the extra point rather than potentially go to a second overtime period. Cass scored on its overtime possession, despite multiple penalties that kept backing them up. The Colonels’ scoring play was a 29 yard pass from sophomore quarterback Devin Henderson to fellow sophomore Sacovie White. Juan Parajito’s PAT kick gave Cass a 28-21 lead at the time. The game went to overtime tied 21-21. Cass put the first points of the game on the scoreboard following the first of three Adairsville turnovers on the night. White picked off a pass and returned it 18 yards to the six yard line early in the first quarter. On the next play, Henderson scored on a six-yard keeper and the Colonels led 7-0 less than two minutes into the game. Adairsville then reeled off 21-unanswered points assisted by a pair of Cass fumbles. Caden Copeland capped a 45-yard drive with a nine yard touchdown run to tied the game 7-7 following the first of three Arthur Lefler PAT kicks. Chris Roper gave the Tigers a 14-7 lead with an 18-yard scamper that capped just a two-play, 25-yard drive with 5:44 remaining in the opening period. Later in the first, the Tigers converted on a fourth and goal at the two yard line for a touchdown and a 21-7 advantage. Gough connected with Copeland to finish off the seven play, 44-yard drive with 1:44 to go in the first quarter. The two teams exchanged possesions throughout much of the second quarter, but an interception gave Cass the ball back with just under three minutes to go in the half at their own 19 yard line. From there, Henderson found White for an 81-yard pass, catch, and run at the 2:35 mark of the second quarter to send the county rivals to the locker room with the Tigers up 21-14. There was no scoring in the third quarter or most of the fourth, but Cass did drive 58 yards on 12 plays to knot the score at 21 with only 2:39 remaining in regulation. White scored from four yards out on a fourth down reverse pitch from Henderson that ultimately sent the game to overtime. Pregame coverage begins at 6 p.m. CANES WIN SECOND HALF SHOOTOUT AT WEST FORSYTH Cartersville and Class 7A West Forsyth traded blows throughout the third quarter Friday night, but it was the Hurricanes who were able to pull out the victory, 38-31. Neither team stopped the other in the third quarter, but it was Cartersville that was able to finally build a two-score lead in the final stanza. West Forsyth grabbed a 14-10 lead early in the third quarter before Canes’ senior quarterback Jake Parker connected with junior receiver Collin Fltcher for a 17-14 lead. The Wolverines scored again on their ensuing drive to regain a 21-17 advantage midway through the third quarter, but again the Canes answered when Parker hit Brynen Wilkins on a third-and-long and a Cartersville 24-21 lead. West Forsyth marched back down the field and scored on an 8-yard run to lead 28-24 at the end of the third quarter. On the next Cartersville possession into the fourth quarter, Parker found Jaylen Scott on a long pass to the West Forsyth 15-yard line. From there, a pair of carries by Malachi Jeffries resulted in another Hurricanes’ touchdown and a 31-28 lead. The Cartersville defense responded with either team’s first stop in the second half leading to a Canes’ two-score lead. Jeffries scored again after key runs by Khristian Lando to put Cartersville ahead 38-28. The next West Forsyth drive stalled in the red zone and the Wolverines elected to kick a 25-yard field goal. The kick made the score 38-31 with just over two minutes to go in the game. West Forsyth tried an onside kick, but a Wolverine touched the ball before it traveled the required ten yards. Cartersville took possession and was able to run out the clock. Cartersville led 10-7 at halftime. Parker connected with Jacob Ray for a 44-yard score and Jesus Gutierrez converted a 37-yard field goal for the Canes. WILDCATS BLANKED AT OSBORNE, 12-0 In a game that included a 90-minute delay due to lightning, Osborne shut out Woodland in their season opener at Cardinal Field in Marietta. Osborne quarterback Eddie Burr had a 27-yard touchdown pass to Khalif Walters for the game’s first score late in the first quarter and Walters added a second touchdown on a 17-yard run in the third period. Extra point attempts failed. For the Cardinals, it was only their third win since 2015 and the first for first year head coach Luqman Salem. Osborne was 1-9 last season, went winless the previous three years, and managed just one win in 2016. The Cardinals (1-0) play at Forest Park Friday. The Cass softball team handed region co-leader Calhoun its first league loss of the season Thursday night in an extra inning thriller at the Cass Athletic Complex. The Region 7-AAAAA rivals went to extra innings tied 8-8 after Calhoun rallied from an 8-4 deficit in the top of the seventh inning. The Yellow Jackets then posted three more runs in the top of the eighth to take an 11-8 lead only to have the Colonels rally for four runs and the win in the bottom of the eighth. Darianna Sosa provided the walk-off hit for Cass with a two out, two-run double. Cass led 2-0 through three innings before Calhoun struck for two runs and a tie in the fourth inning. Cass added six runs in their half of the fifth and sixth innings, but Calhoun answered with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Rachael Lee earned the pitching win with a complete game. She was able to scatter 14 hits and three walks across eight innings while striking out five. Eight of the Yellow Jackets 11 runs were earned. Calhoun slips to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in region play. Cass (4-4, 2-3) travels to Roswell to make up a game with Blessed Trinity Monday at 5 p.m. and will visit Hiram next Tuesday for a region doubleheader at 5 p.m. WOODLAND 12, HIRAM 1 Pitcher Lainey Baker tossed a six inning no hitter and struck out ten as the Lady Cats won Thursday night at Hiram. The Lady Cats scored eight runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open a close game and ultimately routed the host Lady Hornets. Baker allowed one, unearned run and issued two walks in her victory in the circle. She needed only 69 pitches to work through the six innings. Lainey Baker paced the the Woodland attack with two home runs, a double, and three RBIs. Cambrie Carrington also homered and had two doubles with three RBIs for the Wildcats. Alana Carnes contributed two hits and two RBIs. Bailey Sakacsi had two hits including a double and one RBI. Cassie Jones finished with two hits. Michiah Hicks (2 RBIs), Jessica Ryan (RBI), and Jordan Hammonds added one hit apiece. With the loss, Hiram is 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (2-7-1, 2-4) plays a region doubleheader Tuesday at Cartersville. BLESSED TRINITY 3, CARTERSVILLE 2 (10 innings) Blessed Trinity scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the tenth inning Thursday night to outlast Cartersville in a Region 7-AAAAA contest, 3-2. The pitching was outstanding on both sides with Titans’ pitcher Ally Fleck striking out eleven while Lady Canes’ hurlers — McKinley Chada and Kiley Arnold — sitting down seven. Campbell Rogers and Jordan Bishop had one hit and one RBI each for Cartersville. Reese Dumas and Layne Callan had the other Hurricanes’ base hits. Blessed Trinity improved to 5-1 overall and took over the lead in Region 7-AAAAA with a 3-0 mark. Cartersville (4-4, 2-2) travels to Pepperell Monday at 5 p.m. for a non-region game and hosts Woodland in a region doubleheader Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Atco Park. ADAIRSVILLE / LAFAYETTE (to be added)
