After losing their first game in the GCAA Championship Tournament last Sunday, coach Dash O’Neill and the Georgia Highlands College baseball team knew they would need four straight wins in the double-elimination event to capture the conference title. The Chargers responded with three wins in a row, but came up just short in the fourth Thursday night. Georgia Highlands entered the tournament Sunday as the No. 1-seed, but lost 14-7 to East Georgia State. The Chargers then won twice Tuesday, defeating Gordon State 13-2 and East Georgia 16-7 to reach the championship round against Andrew College Thursday. GHC won the first game Thursday 10-6 — handing the Tigers their first loss of the tournament — but Andrew took the final game 9-5. The Chargers burst open a back-and-forth contest in the opening game. The lead was exchanged five times in the early going and was tied three times at 2-2, 3-3, and 4-4 in the first five innings. A big sixth inning, however, lifted Georgia Highlands to a 10-5 lead and the teams exchanged single runs in the eighth inning for a 10-6 final score. It was a team offensive effort for the Chargers. They banged out thirteen hits in the victory with every batter contributing at least one hit or one RBI. Palmer Sapp had three hits. Ben Olson finished with a pair of hits including a grand slam home run and five RBIs. Joe Sutton had two hits including a double and one RBI. Brandon Prince also had two hits and one RBI. Omar Daniels contributed a double and one RBI with a sac fly. Connor Todaro and David Smith tossed in one hit apiece while Trenton Parker drove in one run. Jacob Ryan (5 IP, 5R, 4ER, 8H, 1BB, 3K) started on the mound and picked up the pitching win. Ryan Suppa (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 4K) had four strikeouts in a four inning relief stint. In what became the conference title game, Georgia Highlands trailed 4-1 in the second inning and 5-3 through four innings. The Chargers tied the game 5-5 in the fifth inning, but Andrew scored twice in the sixth inning and added two more runs in the eighth for their four run win. Chase Townsend (3 IP, 3R, 2ER, 2H, 3BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for GHC in relief of starter Conner Perry (2 IP, 4R, 3ER, 2H, 3BB, 2K). Chandler Wood (1 IP, 1BB, 1K) and Johnny Dow (3 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) also worked in relief. Trenton Parker led the Chargers’ offense in the loss with three hits including a double and two RBIs. Joe Sutton had two hits including a double and a sacrifice fly with three RBIs. Brandon Prince, Connor Todaro, and Ben Olson contributed two hits each. Omar Daniels added one hit. Andrew College improved to 35-22-1 on the season with their conference tournament title. The Tigers will host the Tennessee champion, Walters State CC, May 19-21 for the NJCAA Appalachian District title. The winner of that series advances to the National JUCO Championship Tournament May 29-June 5 in Grand Junction, Colorado. Georgia Highlands, winners of the GCAA regular season’s top seed, finishes its season with a 42-15 record.

Georgia Highlands College softball was eliminated from the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs Wednesday night in MIlledgeville with a 7-0 loss at Georgia Military College. The two teams split a doubleheader Tuesday in their best-of-three conference semifinal series forcing a rubber game Wednesday. The host Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning on a pair of singles and an outfield error. GMC then added four more runs in the next inning — all with two outs. A walk followed by a two-run home run led to another walk and a second, two-run home run and a 5-0 Bulldogs lead. Georgia Military added two additional runs in the sixth inning again after two were out. A single, two walks, and another single plated the two insurance runs. GMC pitcher Jana Shellhorse limited the Chargers to five hits and a walk with her complete game performance. Shellhorse struck out eight. Madalyn Morton (5.2 IP, 7R, 6ER, 6H, 7BB, 3K) started in the circle and suffered the pitching loss for GHC. Montana Ledbetter (0.1 IP, 1BB, 1K) retired the final out in the sixth inning with a strikeout. Lacey Rutledge had three hits for the Chargers with three hits including one double. Madison Bennett and Kyndal Brown added one hit each. Georgia Military advances to the conference championship series to play Gordon State. That best-of-three series begins with a doubleheader Friday in Locust Grove. The Chargers finish their season with a 23-21 record.

Due to restructuring and COVID-19 continuing to impact schedules, the minor league baseball season finally got underway this past week. Former Cartersville High standout Connor Justus made his debut with the Miami Marlins organization, seeing action in all six games of Double-A Pensacola's opening series against Mississippi. Justus recorded just two hits but managed to draw five walks for an impressive .400 on-base percentage. Elsewhere, a pair of former Canes started the first MiLB season since 2019 on the injured list. Anthony Seigler, a catcher in the New York Yankees farm system, is on the 7-day IL, while Elliott Anderson, a pitcher in the Kansas City Royals organization, is on the 60-day list. PRO BASEBALL Elliott Anderson (Columbia Fireflies, 3rd yr. pro; Kansas City Royals organization; Cartersville HS) — The left-handed pitcher has been assigned by the Royals to their Low Class-A affiliate in Columbia, South Carolina, but is currently on the 60-day injured list. Sam Howard (Pittsburgh Pirates; 8th yr. pro; Cartersville HS) — Howard retired the third out of the sixth inning last Tuesday and was credited with his sixth hold of the year in the Pirates’ 2-1 win at San Diego. He then suffered the pitching loss after giving up an earned run on a walk in a seventh-inning appearance Saturday at Chicago. Howard walked Jason Heyward but then struck out the next two batters. He was then lifted, and Heyward later scored the go-ahead run on a single. The Cubs won the game 3-2. For the season, the lefty is 2-2 in 16 relief appearances with a 3.86 ERA. Connor Justus (Pensacola Blue Wahoos, 6th yr. pro; Miami Marlins organization; Cartersville HS) — In a season-opening, six-game series at the Mississippi Braves, Justus was 2-for-14 at the plate. He scored one run, drew five walks and drove in one run. The Blue Wahoos won four of the six games to grab the early lead in their division. Luke Schiltz (AZL Rangers, Texas Rangers organization; 3rd yr. pro; Cartersville native; Stoneman Douglas HS) — Schiltz has been assigned to the Rangers’ Arizona League developmental roster. Anthony Seigler (Hudson Valley Renegades, 4th-yr. pro; New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) — The Renegades split a six-game series at the Jersey Shore BlueClaws last Tuesday through Sunday without Seigler. The 21-year-old catcher was placed on the Hudson Valley 7-day injured list last Thursday. COLLEGE BASEBALL Levi Ayers (Young Harris So., Cartersville HS) — Ayers did not secure an out and was the pitcher of record in the Mountain Lions’ rubber game Peach Belt Conference playoff loss Sunday at 24th-ranked North Georgia. Ayers yielded a hit and a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth, as North Georgia won 12-10 to advance to the PBC finals. Ayers appeared in 12 games this season and worked 16 innings with a 9.56 ERA. Young Harris finished the year with a 23-18 record. Mason Barnett (Auburn So., Cartersville HS) — Inserted to pitch the ninth inning Friday in Auburn’s 8-3 home loss to LSU, Barnett faced five batters and gave up one earned run on two hits. He struck out two. Auburn (20-23, 6-18 SEC) was scheduled to play Tuesday at Samford and host Texas A&M in a three-game conference series Friday through Sunday. Clifton Dempsey (Toccoa Falls Sr., Cartersville HS) — Dempsey went 4-for-4, including one double and one RBI, in Monday’s 17-8 home win over Carolina University in the National Christian College Athletic Association South Region Tournament. The Screaming Eagles shortstop also scored one run. TFC (14-24) advances in the tournament, which continues through Wednesday’s championship game. Lane Griffith (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville HS) — Griffith went 1-for-7 in the Wolves’ conference tournament losses to West Florida and Shorter. Griffith finished the season with a .293 batting average. He hit two home runs and had 19 RBIs. West Georgia finished the year with an 18-23 record. Kenny Jinks (Shorter So., Woodland HS) — Jinks allowed a hit but retired the final out of the ninth inning in the Hawks’ 9-5 conference tournament loss Sunday to Alabama-Huntsville in Oxford. Shorter (27-15) went 1-2 in the Gulf South Conference tournament and must now wait for a possible NCAA Tournament at-large bid to be announced Sunday. SOCCER Havyn Isaac (Georgia Military So., Adairsville HS) — Isaac helped the Bulldogs to a pair of victories last week at home. She recorded two saves in a 5-2 triumph over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College last Monday and didn’t even need to make a stop in a 3-0 victory against Gordon State last Wednesday. SOFTBALL Skylar Chappell (Cottey College So., Woodland HS) — The Comets went 2-2 at the Association of Independent Institutions Softball Championship, falling twice to Georgia Gwinnett College, but also collecting one tournament win over the Grizzlies and one over Edward Waters College (Florida) in the double-elimination event. Chappell had only one plate appearance during the tournament and finished the year with a .345 batting average in 31 plate appearances. She hit four homers and added 13 RBIs. Cottey finished the year with a 27-11 record and a runner-up finish in the A.I.I. Championship Tournament. Lauren McElhaney (West Georgia Fr., Cartersville HS) — The Wolves went 2-2 in the double-elimination Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament to end their season. McElhaney had just one at-bat in the tournament. It came in a loss to top-seeded Auburn-Montgomery. The freshman had only six official at-bats this season with a triple and three RBIs. West Georgia finished the regular season with a 25-16 mark and is currently ranked No. 8 in the Southeast Region. The Wolves have hopes of receiving an NCAA Tournament bid when the 48-team field is announced next Monday. Hannah Todd (Kansas Sr., Cartersville HS) — Todd made an appearance in the circle in all three losses for the Jayhawks over the weekend to Iowa State. Todd gave up an earned run (two total) on four hits and a walk in Friday’s loss. She struck out three. On Saturday, she was tagged with the pitching loss after being entered in the seventh inning in a 5-4 loss to the Cyclones. Todd allowed one earned run on one hit and one walk. Sunday, she retired the final two outs of the seventh inning in a 12-4 loss. The right-handed pitcher allowed one earned run on two hits. In her senior regular season, Todd made 15 appearances with a 3.67 ERA in 21 innings. Kansas wrapped up the Big 12 schedule with a 22-26 overall record and a 2-16 mark in the conference. The conference tournament is Friday and Saturday in Oklahoma City with only the top six teams qualifying for the event. TRACK AND FIELD Trevor Knowles (Albion Sr., Woodland HS) — Knowles recorded four top-six finishes, including three solo performances, to help Albion come in third at the MIAA Championships Friday in Alma, Michigan. The former Wildcats standout placed runner-up in the triple jump. Elsewhere, Knowles wound up fifth in the long jump and sixth in the high jump. The Georgia Highlands College baseball team staved off elimination twice Tuesday in the loser’s bracket of the GCAA tournament with a 13-2 win over Gordon State and a 16-7 win over East Georgia State. Omar Daniels led the way for the Chargers’ in their eight inning win over Gordon State. Daniels had four hits in the victory. He doubled in the second inning, singled in the sixth, and produced a double and a single in the eighth inning. Johnny Dow took care of business on the mound for GHC against the Highlanders. The Marietta, Georgia product went seven innings allowing a pair of earned runs on eight hits and three walks. Dow fanned nine. Hal Stelljes worked a final scoreless inning on the mound for the Chargers. He struck out two and faced the minimum. Trace Twardoski had three hits for Georgia Highlands including a home run, a double, a walk, and three RBIs. David Smith finished with a double and three RBIs. Ben Olson hit a solo home run. Connor Todaro contributed one hit and one RBI. Joe Sutton and Palmer Sapp added one hit apiece. The loss eliminated Gordon State who finished 30-21 overall. In the Chargers’ win over East Georgia State, GHC raced out of the gate to take an early 8-1 lead and never trailed in a 16-7 win. The Bobcats, who handed Georgia Highlands a 14-7 loss Sunday in the tournament, cut the lead to 8-4 in the fifth inning before the Chargers scored eight more times over their final three offensive frames. David Smith paced the Chargers offense by driving in four runs on three hits including a double. Brandon Prince had two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Ben Olson had two hits including a triple and two RBIs. Joe Sutton drove in a pair of runs with two hits including a double. Trenton Parker also had two hits. Gavin Harmon added a hit and one RBI. Trace Twardoski contributed one RBI. Zack Valentine (3.1 IP, 4R, 2ER, 5H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Baylor Akin (3.2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 5BB, 2K). Chandler Wood (1 IP, 3K) struck out the side in the eighth inning. The loss eliminates East Georgia who went 2-2 in the conference tournament and finished the season with a 31-22 record. Georgia Highlands (41-14) advances to the tournament finals Thursday at Andrew College but must defeat the Tigers twice to win the conference title. Andrew College, unbeaten in the tournament, has wins over South Georgia State, Gordon State, and East Georgia State on their way to the finals.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team earned a doubleheader split at Georgia Military College Tuesday night to force a deciding third game in their best-of-three GCAA semifinal series with the Bulldogs. GMC won Tuesday’s opening game 9-3, but the Chargers responded in the second game with a 10-2 victory. The third and deciding game in the series is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday in Milledgeville. The winner will advance to the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association championship series Friday and Saturday in Locust Grove. With their season on the line in Game 2, the Chargers trailed 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored six times — all with two outs. A pair of walks, two singles, an error, and a two-run homer by Lacey Rutledge gave Georgia Highlands a 6-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, another four run inning ended the game by run-rule. Three singles, a walk, and a walk-off double by Allison Daffron gave the Chargers a 10-2 win. Madalyn Morton earned the pitching win with six innings in the circle. After the two early runs, she settled in and shut down the Bulldogs. Morton gave up four hits and five walks. She had one strikeout. Madison Bennett had three hits and two RBIs in the win. Hailey Cronic had a hit and two RBIs. Halie Walther and Natalia Herrera contributed one hit each. In Game 1, Georgia Military scored at least one run in five of their six offensive frames for a 9-3 win. Montana Ledbetter (5 IP, 6ER, 7H, 4BB, 10K) suffered the pitching loss for the Chargers although she fanned 10 in five innings. Maggie Schandera (1 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB) worked the final inning in the circle for GHC. Kyndal Brown had two hits for Georgia Highlands. Cronic drove in a pair of runs and had a hit. Bennett, Herrera, and Walther added one hit each.

Despite plating a dramatic game-tying run in the top of the seventh inning the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes found themselves on the wrong end of a walk-off, 4-3 loss Tuesday night at Ware County. The defeat in Game 3 of the best-of-three Class 5A state quarterfinal series brings a close to Cartersville’s playoff run. The host Gators scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 3-0 advantage. Georgia State commit, Caleb Stewart, hit a leadoff solo home run for the first Ware County run. Then a walk, a hit batsmen, and two singles plated two more Gators’ runs. The Canes got two of those runs back in the next inning when Jake Brasfield blasted a two-run homer to right field. The score stayed 3-2 until the final inning. Curt Bonner doubled into left field with one out to get things started for the Hurricanes and Parker McPherson followed with an infield single one out later to put runners on the corners. From there, Blake Sutton came through with a clutch, game-tying ground ball single to the right side that scored Bonner’s courtesy runner, Davis Williams. In the bottom of the seventh, Carter Barnes led off with a single to right field and moved up to second base on a ground out. Following a strikeout, Lane Steedley knocked a base hit into right field to score Barnes and lift the Gators to a 4-3 win. Landon Dean hurled a complete game on the mound for Ware County. The sophomore right-hander scattered nine hits and two walks across seven innings. He struck out four. Phillip Schiltz (3 IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 3K) started on the mound for Cartersville with Gunner Millsap (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB) and Colt McKibben (0.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1K) working in relief. Steedley finished with three hits and three RBIs for the Gators. Barnes and Stewart followed with two hits each including the leadoff homer. Noah Hooks added one hit. Sutton (RBI) and McPherson both had two hits to pace the Canes’ offense. Brasfield hit the two-run homer. Bonner had a double. Elliott Eastin, Drew Rothschild, and Colt McKibben contributed one hit each. Ware County (21-11) advances to the GHSA Class 5A semifinals starting with a doubleheader Saturday at Starr’s Mill. The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes split a doubleheader Monday at Ware County to set up a deciding third game Tuesday in the Class 5A state quarterfinal best-of-three series in Waycross. The host Gators won the opening game 4-0 and the Canes took the second game, 12-5. After dropping the opener, the Cartersville offense used a six-run fifth inning to break open another tight game. Ware County and Cartersville posted four runs each in the first inning with Cartersville taking its first lead of the series in the second inning of Game 2, 5-4. The big fifth inning for Cartersville made the score 11-4 and the Canes added one more insurance run in the sixth for a 12-4 advantage. The Gators managed a run in the seventh, but got no closer. Both defenses committed four errors in the contest leading to a combination of 14 unearned runs in the game. Cartersville pitcher Davis Williams, in his longest pitching stint of the year, tossed a complete game for the victory. He gave up five unearned runs on five hits and three walks while striking out eleven in seven innings. Drew Rothschild and Elliott Eastin paced the Hurricanes’ offense with two hits each. Rothschild had two RBIs. Eastin also drove in a run. Parker McPherson (2 RBIs), Curt Bonner (RBI), Blake Sutton (RBI, sac fly), Hank Smith, and Jake Brasfield (RBI) contributed one hit each. Harrison Childers also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. In the opening game, Ware County starting pitcher Noah Hooks outdueled Canes’ ace Micah Earwood, 4-0. Hooks scattered five hits and did not walk a batter in his seven innings of work. He struck out only one while keeping the Canes' bats off balance. Earwood was solid, but allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks in six innings on the mound. He struck out seven. The Gators led 1-0 after one inning on a single, an error, and a sacrifice fly. Ware County added two more runs in the third inning on a combination of three hits and two walks. The final run was added in the sixth inning on an RBI triple by Caleb Stewart who had three hits in the game. Drew Rothschild had two hits for Cartersville. Curt Bonner and Parker McPherson added one hit apiece. Cartersville (27-9) and Ware County (20-11) will hit the diamond again Tuesday in a 5 p.m. start for a deciding rubber game. The winner will advance to the state semifinals at either Greenbrier or Starr’s Mill. Those two teams, both No. 1 seeds, also split their opening doubleheader Monday. Greenbrier won the opener 5-4 and Starr’s Mill took the nightcap, 3-1. In other quarterfinal action in Class 5A Monday, Loganville swept Harris County 6-4 and 2-0. Meanwhile, St. Pius won twice at Wayne County, 11-1 and 6-0. Those two teams will play their semifinal series starting Saturday at Loganville.
