The Bartow County Parks and Recreation 10-and-under boys all-star team finished 3-0 over the weekend in Spalding County to bring home the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association state championship. The three wins kept the Bartow team unbeaten at 6-0 following a District 5 championship the previous weekend. The state title is the third all-time for the Bartow County Recreation Department. Team members: Braylen Cleaver, Brayden Ford, Camden Green, Kameron Hosey, Solomon James, Christen McClendon, Anthony Moreno, Landon Smith, Jaiden Taylor, and Dametrius Wynn. BARTOW 69, COLLEGE PARK 36 Bartow poured in 28 points in the second quarter to take a 43-25 halftime lead and was never threatened in the bracket preliminary game. Bartow extended the lead to 62-33 through three quarters on their way to a 33-point win. Anthony Moreno led Bartow with 26 points. Solomon James followed with 17. Christen McClendon contributed nine points. Kameron Hosey finished with eight. Braylen Cleaver and Dametrius Wynn scored four points each and Brayden Ford added one. BARTOW 44, SOUTH BRYAN 38 - State Semifinals South Bryan slowed the pace in the state semifinals and forced Bartow to play more of a half court game. The strategy kept South Bryan close, but Bartow was still able to pull out the win. Moreno led Bartow with 14 points. James and McClendon also reached double figures with 10 points each. Hosey scored seven and Wynn added three for the locals. The semifinal victory sent Bartow into the tournament finals and set up a rematch with College Park who defeated Tucker to qualify for the title game. BARTOW 55, COLLEGE PARK 45 - State Finals Bartow fell behind early and trailed after one quarter 11-10, but grabbed the lead for good in the second quarter and never looked back. Bartow led 26-21 at halftime and the game settled into a back-and-forth struggle for most of the second half but the locals never trailed after taking a second quarter lead. Moreno poured in 26 points in the title game followed by 14 by James. McClendon contributed eight points. The Cass boys placed third, Cass girls fourth, and the Adairsville boys were sixth out of 12 teams competing Saturday at the Southeast Whitfield Track & Field Invitational in Dalton. Gordon Lee won the girls team title with 112 points. Calhoun was next with 96. Heritage-Catoosa (87.5), Cass (71), and Gilmer (69) rounded out the girls top five. The Adairsville girls were 12th with nine points. Calhoun won the boys team title with 141.5 points. Heritage-Catoosa was runner up with 85.5 points and Cass was third with 85. Northwest Whitfield (75) and Coahulla Creek (56) finished in the top five just ahead of Adairsville’s 50.5 points. The Adairsville Tigers split a pair of games played Saturday at Temple. Adairsville won their opener against Mt. Zion-Carroll 6-3, but dropped the nightcap to host Temple 13-7. ADAIRSVILLE 6, MT. ZION-CARROLL 3 In Saturday’s opener the Tigers overcame eight errors by scoring three times over the final two innings to defeat Mt. Zion-Carroll 6-3. Jack Whitley started on the mound for Adairsville and went five innings to collect the win. He scattered four hits and a walk and did not allow an earned run. Elijah Padgett picked up a save with two innings of relief. Padgett walked three and struck out four. Chris Roper had two hits and one RBI for the Tigers’ offense. Grayson Belcher had a double and one RBI. Kyler Smith contributed a hit and one RBI. Braden Powell added a hit. Mt. Zion-Carroll slipped to 1-5 with the loss. TEMPLE 13, ADAIRSVILLE 7 Temple scored eight times in the first two innings and eventually pounded out 15 hits to defeat Adairsville Saturday evening, 13-7. Temple led 8-2 after two innings and built a 10-3 lead through four frames. After Adairsville narrowed the deficit to 10-7 with a four-run top of the sixth, Temple answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning for a six-run win. Andrew Cash (4 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 6K) was the winning pitcher for Temple with four innings of work. Adairsville starter Grayson Belcher (0.1 IP, 5ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) took the loss. Brenden Carroll (3 IP, 5ER, 7H, 4BB, 4K), Wade Dooley (0.2 IP, 0R, 2H), and Evan Sanders (2 IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 3K) pitched in relief. The Cass Colonels were swept in a doubleheader Saturday at Northwest Whitfield, 10-1 and 7-4. The Bruins out hit Cass twelve to four in the opener with Aiden Hosford, Keaton McQuaig, and Matt Redmond combining for eight hits including two doubles and a triple, five runs scored, and five RBIs. McQuaig also tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts to earn the win. Trey Scott (3 IP, 7R, 6ER, 7H, 3BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for the Colonels. Chase Botts (2 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K) and Aidan Cottingim (1 IP, 0R, 1H) also pitched. Matt Shook and Carson Hill had doubles for the Cass offense. Alex Freeman had a hit and drove in the only Cass run. Nic Wallin added one hit. In Game 2 in Tunnel Hill, Hosford scattered five hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts in a complete-game effort as Northwest defeated Cass 7-4. Cass tied the game 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but the Bruins built a 7-3 lead with runs in each of their final four frames. The Colonels added a run in the top of the seventh for the 7-4 final score. Jordan Gani (3.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 7H, 3BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for Cass. Thomas Botts (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) and Shook (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB, 1K) pitched in relief. Will Roper, McQuaig, Hosford, and Gavin Morgan had two hits each for Northwest Whitfield. McQuaig hit a two-run home run in the second inning and finished with four RBIs. Roper, Hosford, and Morgan added one RBI each. Shook had two hits including a triple and two RBIs for the Colonels. Bentley Markley contributed a double and two RBIs. Aidan Larkin doubled and Jayden Smith added one hit. The Bruins improved to 6-2-1 with their two wins. Cass (1-8) will look to snap a six-game losing skid Tuesday in their Region 7-AAAAA opener at Woodland.

The visiting Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs scored three times in the fourth inning Saturday afternoon and those runs were the difference in a 3-2 decision at Woodland. The Wildcats led 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth on an Ayden Ray sacrifice fly to score Peyton Posey. Posey had doubled to lead off the third inning. Kennesaw Mountain answered with four singles in the fourth inning to create their three runs. C.J. Whaley, Dhruva Narine, and Ethan Snipes all had hits to force in the first run. After a successful sacrifice bunt, Jesus Crespo singled home two more Mustangs runs for a 3-1 lead. Woodland added a single run in the bottom of the sixth when Ray singled and Jacob Gravett later drove in his courtesy runner, Julian Wright. The Wildcats got a man to scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but a strikeout, a pickoff at second, and a fly out ended the threat. Ray (6 IP, 3ER, 6H, 2BB, 4K) started on the mound for Woodland and suffered the pitching loss. Julian Wright (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1K) worked the seventh inning in relief. Kennesaw Mountain leveled its season mark at 6-6 with the win. Woodland (4-6) plays a three-game, Region 7-AAAAA series with Cass this week. The Wildcats host a single game Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and will travel to Cass Friday for a doubleheader slated for a 5 p.m. start.

Cartersville baseball wrapped up its annual visit to the Perfect Game High School Showdown in Hoover, Alabama with a 10-1 win Saturday morning over Russell County (AL) in a white division consolation game. The Canes finished 3-1 in the event and third in their nine-team division with wins over North Broward Prep (FL) and Mountain Brook (AL) to go with Saturday’s victory. The lone loss was to Oxford (AL) in the divisional bracket semifinals. In Saturday’s win, Cartersville led 3-1 after two innings, 6-1 after three, and added four more insurance runs in the fifth inning. Hurricanes pitchers Davis Williams (2 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 5K), Gunner Millsap (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 3K), Cal Goss (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 1K), and Silas Freeman (1 IP, 0R, 0H) combined to allow only one earned run on four hits and three walks. The quartet totaled nine strikeouts. The Canes scored three times in the second inning with only a leadoff single by catcher Colt McKibben. Two hit batsmen, two walks, and an infield error led to Cartersville taking a 3-1 lead. In the Hurricanes’ third inning, Curt Bonner, who finished with two hits in the game, was credited with an inside the park home run to center field. The hit lifted Cartersville to a 6-1 advantage by scoring Drew Rothschild and Jimbo Gaines who had reached on a walk and a single, respectively. Davis Williams, Hank Smith, and Parker McPherson drove in runs with fifth inning hits. Elliott Eastin, who also singled in the frame, scored on a wild pitch in the inning for a Cartersville 10-1 lead that closed out the scoring. The loss drops Russell County to 5-6-1 on the season. Cartersville (5-4) begins Region 7-AAAAA play Tuesday at Hiram in a 5:55 p.m. start. The Canes will host the Hornets in a doubleheader Friday starting at 5 p.m. to complete the three-game series.

On the heels of the recent announcement by Cartersville girls basketball coach Cindy Moore that she will be stepping aside from her coaching duties with the Lady Canes, Cass boys basketball coach Sean Glaze made a similar announcement Friday stepping down from coaching the Colonels. “It has been a true honor and a privilege to serve Cass High School and our community as the head men’s basketball coach for the last three years,” said Glaze in a letter to Cass principal Stephen Revard. “Having worked at other schools in other systems, Cass is truly a special place. . . . . . I will always be a proud member of Colonel Nation.” Glaze indicated in the letter that his desire to take on other challenges beyond Cass as a speaker and author — along with the graduation of his son — prompted his move to step away from his head coaching position. Prior to taking the Cass position three years ago, Glaze had founded Great Results Teambuilding and traveled the country speaking at conferences and events to share his experiences in building teams as an educator. The resignation letter by Glaze indicates his intention to remain at Cass as a teacher and to continue his support of the program and players. The Cass boys finished the 2020-21 season with a 19-8 record after falling at Villa Rica in the opening round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. The Colonels were the regular season top seed in Region 7-AAAAA but lost a semifinal game to Blessed Trinity and settled for a 3-seed in the state tournament. The Colonels were 16-13 in 2019-20 under Glaze and also lost in the state tournament’s first round at Columbia. His 2018-19 team finished 13-13. Cartersville girls basketball coach Cindy Moore resigned her coaching position in the final days of February after guiding her team to the Class AAAAA state playoffs. Moore, who has coached at Cartersville for nine seasons, said in a public statement “It has been a privilege to coach at Cartersville, but it’s time for someone else to take the reins. My plan is to continue teaching for a couple of years. Go Canes.” The trip to the state playoffs by the Cartersville girls ended a six-year state playoff drought and marked Moore’s third trip to the state playoffs in her tenure. The Lady Canes made the state playoffs the first two seasons Moore was at the helm in 2013 and 2014 and finished this season with a 7-16 mark and a loss in the state tournament’s first round to New Manchester.

The Blessed Trinity girls soccer team stayed on the attack for most of the game Friday night at Woodland and took more than 30 shots on goal to earn a 10-0 Region 7-AAAAA win. “Blessed Trinity has a very strong team,” said Woodland girls coach Nicole Heiser. “They kept us on defense the majority of the game. Our goalkeeper, Chloe Ravish, had over 20 saves. I was happy with the way the girls kept fighting, however, until the last whistle.” The Lady Titans improved to 8-1-1 on the season and 1-0 in region play. Woodland (2-5-1, 0-1) travels to Cosa Tuesday for a non-region match at 5:30 p.m. and will host Hiram in region play Friday at 5:30 p.m. CALHOUN 6, CASS GIRLS 2 The Cass girls stayed close in the first half, trailing 3-2 at halftime but Calhoun added another trio of goals in the second half to defeat the Lady Colonels Friday night at Cochran Stadium, 6-2. The Lady Jackets improved to 5-4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play with their win. Cass (3-6, 0-1) hosts Armuchee in non-region action Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and travels to Cartersville for a region game Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams opened Region 7-AAAAA play Friday night with wins at Hiram. The Lady Canes won 10-0 and the Cartersville boys defeated the Hornets 5-1. Abbey Craig scored four goals — three in the first half — and added a first half assist as the Lady Canes scored six times before the intermission. Trista Kelly finished with a pair of goals. Kendyl Anderson had one goal and two assists. Hattie Williams had one goal and one assist. Ansley Holton and Devondria Johnson contributed one goal each. Emma Baker assisted on two goals while Ava Flemons and Jocelyn Fernandez added one assist each. The Hiram girls fall to 0-6-2 with the loss. The Lady Canes improved to 4-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in region action. The Cartersville girls play at Heritage-Catoosa Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will host Cass Friday at 5:30 p.m. In the boys win, Joel Zazueta had a first half goal and an assist as the Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead by halftime. Zazueta assisted a Giovanni Jacobo goal to open the scoring and added a penalty kick goal in the 32nd minute for a 2-1 advantage. Zazueta added another goal and two more assists in the second half. Antonio Garcia and Daniel Abeja scored off the Zazueta feeds. Cartersville goalkeeper Collier Parker earned his first varsity win in net for the Canes. Hiram slipped to 0-5 for the year and 0-1 in region play. Cartersville (5-1-1, 1-0) hosts Southeast Whitfield Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Cass Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Woodland baseball snapped a three-game skid Friday evening with a 4-0 shutout win at Model. Carter Heath (6 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 10K) picked up the pitching win and Nate Rosser (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1K) a save as the two hurlers combined for the Wildcats’ one-hitter. Woodland took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and score remained that way until Woodland’s half of the sixth inning. The Wildcats secured the win by posting three more runs in the penultimate frame. Six different Wildcats had one hit each. Peyton Posey (2 RBIs), Carter Heath, and Scotty Smith each doubled. Chase Carson, Jakiyon Porter, and Drew Billings added one single each. The loss dropped Model to 6-2 for the season. Woodland (4-5) hosts Kennesaw Mountain Saturday at 12 noon.

Cat Wheeler scored five goals in a game for the second time this season and Megan Hardin found the back of the net three times as the Adairsville girls routed visiting Rockmart Friday night in Tiger Valley, 12-2, to celebrate the team’s senior night. Rockmart scored both of their goals in the first half, but Adairsville still controlled most of the action taking a 6-2 lead by the intermission. Wheeler and Hardin had three goals each to complete first half hat tricks. Sadye Johnson and Hardin were credited with assists on the Johnson goals. Wheeler assisted on two of Hardin’s first half scores. Kaylee Jordan scored twice in the second half for the Lady Tigers. Lillie McBride and Jordyn Hartline added goals. Wheeler also scored twice in the second half. Elle Causby assisted on two goals. Ansley Self, Maddie Gossett, and Wheeler also picked up assists in the second half. “Cat Wheeler had her best game,” said Adairsville coach David Sexauer. “Every time she touched the ball, something great resulted. She and Sadye Johnson are a great combination when working together.” The one-side win enabled Sexauer to continue working on his lineup. “We continue to experiment in these games to find our optimal line up for our skills set,” Sexauer added. The loss dropped Rockmart to 1-4-1 on the season and 1-1 in region play. Adairsville (7-1, 2-0) continues Region 6-AAA play Tuesday evening at North Murray.
