Woodland trailed in the early innings, but scored eight times over their final four offensive frames to earn a non-region road win at Central-Carroll Friday night, 10-6. Although the Wildcats’ defense struggled with seven miscues, the offense produced at the right times to pull out the victory. Peyton Posey (4 IP, 3R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K) started on the mound for Woodland and picked up the pitching win. Carter Heath (3 IP, 3R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) closed out the final three innings. Central scored the only run of the first inning and led 3-1 after two frames, but the Wildcats scored in each remaining inning except the sixth on their way to their second win of the year. Scotty Smith had a two-hit game with a double and one RBI. Heath, Posey, and Chase Carson contributed one hit and one RBI each. Jackson Rutledge, Jakiyon Porter, and Zach Wilson had the other Woodland base hits. Six walks and five hit batsmen aided the Wildcats’ offense. Woodland also took advantage of the host Lions with their running game. Eight different players stole a base for the Wildcats led by Porter’s three swipes. Woodland (2-2) plays at Wheeler Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Georgia Highlands College baseball swept a doubleheader with Lake Land College Friday played at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers blanked the visiting Lakers in both games, 7-0 and 9-0. Pitchers Conner Perry and Griffin Brown combined for the shutout in the opening game. Perry scattered three hits and struck out six. Brown allowed a hit, but closed down the seventh with a scoreless frame. Neither pitcher issued a walk although Perry did hit one batter. The Chargers broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added a five-spot in the sixth inning as they out-hit the Lakers, ten to four. Gavin Harmon had three hits for the Chargers in the opener including a pair of doubles. Palmer Sapp contributed a pair of hits including a double and two RBI. Omar Daniels doubled and drove in one run. Brandon Prince, Lavoisier Fisher, and Mickey Maguire all had one hit and one RBI while Trace Twardoski added the other GHC base hit. Game 2 of the doubleheader followed a similar scoring pattern to the opener. The Chargers took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, added four more runs in the fifth, and tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning. Chase Townsend, Mason List, and Twardoski combined on the mound for the second game shutout. Townsend (5.2 IP, 0R, 4H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the win. List (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) closed out the sixth and worked into the seventh inning. Twardoski (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) recorded the final two outs. GHC collected eleven hits in Game 2. Daniels (double, four RBI), David Smith (two doubles, one RBI), Harmon (two RBI, stolen base), and Brandon Prince all finished with two hits for Georgia Highlands. Maguire tripled, walked and scored two runs. Bam Thomas had a double and two RBI and Twardoski contributed one hit. Georgia Highlands (13-3) returns to the diamond Sunday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader at LakePoint against Three Rivers CC (Missouri). The Raiders and Chargers will play Game 3 of their series Monday afternoon at 2 p.m.

The South Carolina Football Hall of Fame (SCFHOF) announces Trevor Lawrence as its 2019 Blanchard-Rogers Trophy recipient.  The trophy is awarded each year to South Carolina’s most outstanding collegiate player at the Hall of Fame’s annual enshrinement celebration.  This year, the award will be presented to Trevor Lawrence on April 2, 2020, at the Hilton Greenville. Lawrence was a high school phenom at Cartersville High School in Georgia, before coming to South Carolina to attend Clemson University in 2018. This past fall, the sophomore followed up an undefeated and National Championship winning freshman campaign with another 14 straight wins and a second consecutive College Football Playoff National Championship game appearance.  The 6’6” quarterback grew into a legitimate dual-threat last season adding 563 rushing yards and nine touchdowns to his 3,665 passing yards and 36 passing touchdowns.  This dual-threat production was on full display in the College Football Playoff Semi-Final clash against Ohio State where he amassed 107 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown, 259 passing yards, and two passing touchdowns.  This performance earned him Fiesta Bowl Offensive MVP honors.  He started his collegiate career with 25 consecutive wins which is the sixth-longest streak by a collegiate quarterback during any point in a career in college football history. The Georgia Highlands Chargers struck for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Wednesday to beat visiting Cleveland State CC at LakePoint, 8-4. Relief pitcher Ryan Smithson picked up the win on the mound with two spotless innings in the eighth and ninth innings. He did not allow a base runner and struck out two in recording the final six outs for GHC. Jacob Ryan started on the mound for the Chargers and went five innings. Jakob Brown (0.0 IP, 2ER, 2BB), Stevie Szucs (0.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3BB, 1K), and Hunter Moody (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) also took the mound for Georgia Highlands. With the game tied 4-4 heading to the bottom of the eighth, the Chargers took advantage of a pair of walks, three hits, and a sacrifice fly to take control by plating four runs. Palmer Sapp singled home the go-ahead RBI and Mickey Maguire singled home two more later in the frame. Lavoisier Fisher’s sac fly drove in the game’s final run. Georgia Highlands led 4-0 through four innings before Cleveland State tied the game with a four-run sixth inning. David Smith singled home Fisher in the first inning for the Chargers’ early lead. Gavin Harmon doubled and later scored on a wild pitch in the second inning. Maguire then gave GHC a 3-0 lead with an RBI single to score Sapp. The Chargers’ fourth run came in the fourth inning when Maguire singled home Omar Daniels. Daniels had tripled to start the frame. Maguire finished 4-for-5 with four RBI at the top of the Chargers’ lineup. He also stole a base. Harmon finished the day with a pair of doubles. Georgia Highlands (11-3) is scheduled for a doubleheader with Lake Land College (Illinois) Friday starting at 10:30 a.m. The Chargers will also host a doubleheader with Three Rivers College (Missouri) Sunday starting at 2 p.m. All four games will be at LakePoint in Emerson.

The Adairsville girls soccer team outlasted Fannin County in a physical and hard fought contest in Tiger Valley Wednesday night, 1-0. Following a scoreless first half, the Lady Tigers found the net off the foot of junior Taylor Rhoades in the game’s 50th minute. Sophomore Megan Hardin served up the assist. Adairsville controlled most of the action. The Tigers put a dozen shots on goal while the visiting Lady Rebels managed on two shot on net. Adairsville keeper Annie McCormick picked up the victory in goal. Head coach David Sexauer credited juniors Ellie McBride and Sadye Johnson for controlling play in midfield and center back. McBride kept the Fannin attacking strikers in check and Johnson was solid in midfield. The Adairsville girls (2-0) host Darlington Friday evening. COAHULLA CREEK 2, CASS BOYS 1 The Cass boys lost to visiting and Class AAA 4th-ranked Coahulla Creek Wednesday night, 2-1, at Cochran Stadium. The Colts (4-0) led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Ronaldo Medina. Jaime Mendiola scored the Coahulla Creek second half goal. Saul Barcenas added an assist. Alex Cabanas scored the Cass goal off an assist from Kevin Polo. Cass (2-3) will return to action next Tuesday when the Colonels host Carrollton at 8 p.m.

The Cartersville Lady Canes soccer team battled through a rainy evening at Rome Tuesday night to come away with a 2-1 victory. Cartersville scored the only second half goal after the contest went to intermission tied 1-1. Kalyn Donegan, who now has six goals through the Lady Canes first three games, scored both goals for Cartersville. Abby Craig assisted on one of the goals. The other was unassisted. “We were missing some key players, but Trista Kelly stepped up to play in goal -- for the first time in her high school career -- while Kelly Betancourt and Alexandra Peters played a lot of minutes to help us to this win,” said Cartersville coach Chad Murray. “I was stuck on a plane from Denver and assistant coach Eric Helms guided the girls to their win.” The Lady Canes (3-0) host Chestatee Friday at 6 p.m. ROME 4, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 3 The Cartersville boys lost a last-minute thriller at Rome Tuesday night, falling 4-3. After Rome took a 1-0 lead in the game’s fifth minute, Alex Rios tied the score with a breakaway goal off an assist from Joel Zazueta. The two teams battled scoreless through the remainder of the half for a 1-1 tie at the intermission. Brady Craig gave Cartersville its first lead of the night in the 45th minute off a feed from Joan Vargas, but the host Wolves regained their lead with back-to-back goals at the midpoint of the second half and again with eight minutes remaining. The Hurricanes tied to score 3-3 on a header by Craig off a cross from Zazueta, but Rome scored the final goal with only seconds remaining on a 30-yard free kick. The Cartersville boys (3-1) travel to North Springs Wednesday for a 6 p.m. kickoff and the girls and boys will host Chestatee Friday in games that begin at 6 p.m.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL Jacquez Fountain (Albany Tech Fr., Cass) — Fountain racked up 28 points, including shooting 7-for-14 from deep, and 10 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to see Albany Tech past Central Georgia Tech in a tight 71-70 loss Wednesday. Fountain wasn't quite as efficient Saturday, when he had 18 points and five rebounds versus Andrew College. However, Albany Tech rallied for a 55-52 win. Ashton Hagans (Kentucky So., Cartersville native) — Hagans flirted with a triple-double in a come-from-behind win Tuesday at Vanderbilt. He finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to go with two steals. On Saturday, six points, three rebounds and three assists before fouling out in a 67-62 win over Ole Miss. Whitney Harris (Toccoa Falls So., Woodland) — Harris had a nice shooting week, hitting 3-for-7 in a 67-59 win over Johnson University-Florida and 4-for-9 in a 68-62 loss to Bob Jones. Carter Hedden (Hocking So., Cass) — Hedden saw some time off the bench in a 98-86 win Saturday over Lorain County. He didn't see the floor in a 102-100 loss Wednesday at Sinclair. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State Jr., Cartersville) — McClinic played three scoreless minutes in a 71-56 loss Saturday to Faulkner. Kyla Michienzi (Piedmont R-Fr., Cass) — Michienzi dropped home 17 points — second-most on the team — in 18 minutes off the bench in a 76-48 win Wednesday over Brevard. She added two rebounds and a steal. Saturday, in a 78-56 victory against Huntingdon, Michienzi contributed five points, one rebound and one assist. Piedmont will host the winner of Averett and Meredith in the quarterfinals of the USA South tournament at 2 p.m. Saturday. Jana Morning (Berry Jr., Cass) — Morning had 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting to go with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals in Berry's regular-season finale — a 62-47 loss to Oglethorpe. Berry will face Centre in the Southern Athletic Association quarterfinals at 1 p.m. Sunday. Jaylon Pugh (Furman So., Cartersville) — Pugh saw four minutes of action in an 86-71 win Wednesday at Samford. He had one foul but no other stats in the limited run. Josie Summerville (North Park So., Adairsville) — Summerville went scoreless but did have seven rebounds, an assist and a steal in a 62-53 defeat Wednesday against Carthage. Darius Thrower (Truett McConnell Sr., Excel Christian) — Thrower posted six points, two steals, a rebound and an assist in a 95-66 loss Wednesday to Allen. Alexis Ware (Piedmont Fr., Cass) — Ware saw five minutes of playing time in the win over Brevard. She had one foul and one turnover in the limited minutes. Nakiyah Washington (Piedmont Fr., Adairsville) — Washington remained on fire this past week, leading her the Lions in scoring in each of their wins. She had 20 points (6-of-10 from the field, 8-of-10 from the line) with six rebounds and one each of rebounds, blocks and steals in just 20 minutes against Brevard. Washington came off the bench on senior night against Huntingdon but still scored a team-high 18 points in 23 minutes. She added three steals, two rebounds, two assists and a block. Carrod Watson (North Georgia Sr., Woodland) — Watson started each of North Georgia's wins last week, but he totaled just 23 minutes of floor time. He had three points, two rebounds and a block in a 73-66 victory over Columbus State, and Watson went scoreless with two boards in an 85-77 comeback triumph against Lander. Breeana Wilson (Georgia Highlands Fr., Adairsville) — Wilson finished with two points to go with three rebounds, two steals and an assist in a 56-38 win Tuesday over Andrew College. The next night, she had one rebound in a 68-66 loss to South Georgia Tech. TRACK AND FIELD Parker Breedlove (Reinhardt Fr., Cartersville) — Breedlove finished third in the men's 3000-meter run, crossing in just over 10 minutes, Friday at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational. Trevor Knowles (Albion Jr., Woodland) — Knowles came in second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump Friday at the Aquinas College Little Meet. London Shaw (Jacksonville State Fr., Cartersville) — Shaw placed ninth in shot put and 19th in weight throw, leading her team in both events, this past weekend at the Bulldog Open, hosted by Samford. He did not allow a run and recorded one strikeout in an 11-0 win over Bryan. Ayers yielded two earned runs on a walk and two hits in Friday’s 6-1 loss to Lincoln Trail. Georgia Highlands (10-3) hosts Cleveland State CC (TN) Tuesday, Lake Land CC (IL) in a doubleheader Thursday, and Three Rivers CC (MO) in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… made his college debut Saturday with the Tigers in a home 7-3 win over Illinois-Chicago. Barnett faced eight batters and allowed three earned runs on a walk and four hits. He fanned two. Auburn (4-0) hosts Oakland University (MI) Tuesday and has a three-game home series with UCF this Friday through Sunday. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Jr., 1B, Cass HS)… was 0-for-1 with a walk in a start as designated hitter Saturday as the Mountain Lions won 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep of visiting Albany State. He was then 4-for-9 with a double, two walks, two runs, and one RBI as Toccoa Falls split two games with Columbia International University Friday and Saturday at Georgia Gwinnett College. Dempsey was also 2-for-7 in losses Friday and Saturday against the host and NAIA 5th-ranked Grizzlies at GGC. Toccoa Falls (3-6) hosts NAIA 22nd-ranked Middle Georgia State Tuesday and travels to University of South Carolina Beaufort for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Jr., OF, Cartersville HS)… had a rough week at the plate going 0-for-11 in three starts but the Jaguars picked up their first win of the season Saturday over Lake Erie College in games played at Anderson University (SC). August (1-8) plays at Erskine College Wednesday and opens Peach Belt Conference play Friday through Sunday in a three-game series at Lander University. LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Sr., C, Adairsville HS)… in three starts at Lee University this weekend, Griffith walked once, scored a run, and drove in one run but was 0-for-11 at the plate. West Georgia won two of three games improving to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. The Wolves play at North Georgia Wednesday and host a three-game conference series with University of Montevallo Saturday and Sunday. HUNTER HICE — Georgia College (So., 1B, Adairsville HS)… went 1-for-4 in both games of a weekend conference series with Francis Marion University. The Bobcats won 6-1 Friday but lost 7-4 Saturday. Sunday’s game was cancelled. Georgia College (8-1, 4-1 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Savannah State University Tuesday and will entertain Claflin University in a three-game weekend series. KENNY JINKS — Shorter University (So., LHP, Woodland HS)… was called on Friday out of the bullpen in the eighth inning and allowed a base hit to the only batter he faced during a 5-1 loss at Valdosta State. The Hawks split two games with the Blazers with Sunday’s game cancelled due to weather. Shorter (7-1, 1-1 Gulf South Conference) hosts Emmanuel College in non-conference action Tuesday and Oakland City University (IN) Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series. LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee: University of the South (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… made his first start and his second college appearance Sunday against Carroll University (WI). Martin allowed one, unearned run on a walk and two hits in five innings of work. He struck out six in a non-decision outing. The Tigers rallied in the bottom of the ninth to win 4-3. Sewanee (4-0-1) hosts Dominican (IL) Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series. DEVIN WARNER - Grayson CC (So., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 3-for-14 with three doubles, two runs scored, and one RBI as the 17th-ranked Vikings won four games during the week. Grayson had wins a pair of wins over both San Jacinto-North and Alvin CC. Grayson (5-1) hosts Navarro CC Tuesday, Paris CC Thursday, and travels to Seminole State (OK) for a doubleheader Saturday. PRESTON WELCHEL — University of South Alabama (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… made his collegiate debut as a pinch hitter Saturday against Campbell University in the seventh inning of an 8-8 game at the time. He went down on strikes, but the Jaguars rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning to top the visiting Camels 12-10. USA (2-1) plays a two-game series Tuesday and Wednesday at Vanderbilt before hosting the South Alabama Invitational Friday through Sunday at Stanky Field. CAUY WILLIAMS — Wallace State-Dothan CC (So., RHP, Woodland HS)… made a pair of appearances this week recording one out in each. He gave up two earned runs on two hits and two walks Wednesday in a 19-6 win at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College when he worked in the fifth inning. He then entered in the seventh inning and yielded four earned runs on two walks, a hit, and a home run in Saturday’s 15-8 home win over St. Petersburg CC. Wallace State-Dothan (4-3) plays Shelton State and Gulf Coast State Friday at Gulf Coast. The Governors will then host Dyersburg State Saturday and Columbia State Sunday. SOFTBALL COLBI BALLARD — Shorter University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… entered in the fourth inning as a pinch runner Saturday at Valdosta State and scored a run in the Hawks’ 10-4 loss. Shorter (0-8, 0-3 Gulf South Conference) plays Catawba College and Columbus State University Sunday in Blairsville. SKYLAR CHAPPELL — Cottey College (Fr., C, Woodland HS)… made a pinch hitting appearance in a 3-2 win Tuesday over visiting Bethel (KS). Cottey is 5-1 following a Sunday home doubleheader split with William Woods University, but not all game boxscores were immediately available. The Comets, a new member of NAIA, are scheduled to host Oklahoma Wesleyan Tuesday before playing in the Queen City Bash Friday through Sunday in Springfield, Missouri. PRESLY EDWARDS — Wesleyan College (Fr., C, Cartersville HS)… was 0-for-5 at the plate but drove in one run as the Wolves split a doubleheader with Belhaven at home Saturday. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (So., OF, Cartersville HS)… went 1-for-2 with one RBI in Friday’s 9-1 home win over Albany State. Poston was also 0-for-3 Saturday in a 3-0 win over Union University (TN). CSU (5-5) has won four straight heading into Wednesday’s doubleheader at Albany State. The Cougars will also play games this weekend at the Young Harris Tournament against Trevecca Nazarene, Catawba, and Shorter. HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… made a start Friday in Clearwater, Florida against 15th-ranked Georgia and was tagged with the pitching loss. Todd went two innings in the circle allowing six earned runs on four hits and three walks in an eventual 11-0 loss. She struck out two of 14 batters faced. Kansas is schedule to play Friday through Sunday at the Boerner Invitational in Arlington, Texas. The Jayhawks (2-8) will face UT-San Antonio, Rutgers, and two additional games in the three day event.

Three Rockmart pitchers combined for a no-hit, perfect game Monday evening as the Yellow Jackets won at Woodland, 11-0, in five innings. LSU commit Ty Floyd went the first three innings for Rockmart (1-0) and struck out all nine batters faced. Javin Whatley fanned two in the fourth inning and senior Brayden Cole struck out the side in the fifth inning enabling the trio of hurlers to face the minimum. Woodland starter Phoenix Cramer (2.1 IP, 8ER, 8H, 2BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss. Trevor Collum (1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) and Drew Billings (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) also took the mound for the Wildcats. Woodland (1-2) travels to Central-Carroll Tuesday for a 5:55 p.m. start.

The Cartersville baseball team suffered a 5-2 defeat by Forsyth Central Monday afternoon in the 2020 home opener for the Hurricanes. The visiting Bulldogs (1-1) scored twice in the third inning and added two more runs in the fourth inning to take an early 4-0 lead. Cartersville responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but Forsyth Central relievers Tyler Smith and Jake Hill would allow only one more Cartersville hit across the final three and two-third innings and did not yield another run. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the seventh for the 5-2 final score. Left-handed junior starter Will Robbins earned the pitching win for Forsyth Central. He struck out seven and scattered three hits while working into the fourth inning. Smith and Hill had a pair of strikeouts each for the Bulldogs. Canes’ starter Hayden Davidson (3.2 IP, 4R, 0ER, 5H, 1BB, 2K) was tagged with the pitching loss despite not allowing an earned run. Silas Freeman (2.1 IP, 0R, 2H, 5K) and Davis Williams (1 IP, 1ER, 3H, 1K) pitched in relief for Cartersville. Forsyth Central scored twice in the top of the third inning. The first run crossed following a single, an infield error, and a wild pitch. John Goodrow smacked a single two batters later to drive in the second Bulldogs’ run. In the fourth, another infield error followed by a single and a ground out plated a run that gave Forsyth Central a 3-0 lead. Luke Owens lined a single into left field to drive in the Bulldogs’ fourth run of the day. Cartersville’s two-run fourth was started when Parker McPherson reached on a hard one-hopper that was misplayed by the Bulldogs’ third baseman. Chandler Tromza followed with a double over the head of the Forsyth Central centerfielder to put base runners at second and third. Ben Williams bounced a single into right field to score McPherson and Tromza later scored when Jack Carter bounced into a double play. The final Forsyth Central run scored when Goodrow drove in Brandon Bick. Bick had doubled to start the seventh inning and A.J. Fiechter advanced Bick to third with a single. Cartersville finished with four base hits. Drew Rothschild and Tromza doubled. Ben Williams had a pair of singles. The Canes (1-1) travel to Villa Rica Tuesday for a 5:55 p.m. start and travel to Alexander Thursday for another 5:55 p.m. first pitch. Saturday, Cartersville will host Ringgold at 1 p.m. and Rockmart at 5:30 p.m. at Richard Bell Field.

The Georgia Highlands softball team played four games Friday and Saturday at the Gulf Shores, Alabama Sun Chief Invitational and went 1-3 in those games. The Chargers dropped a 10-2 contest to Chattanooga State and a 12-0 decision to Wallace State-Hanceville in Friday’s games. They then fell Saturday to Central Alabama 11-10 before salvaging a win in the event by beating Trinity Valley, 5-4. In the four games, Deyonce Lewis led the GHC offense by going 6-for-10 with a double, sac fly, three runs scored and had a pair of RBI. Taryn Hitchcock was 6-for-11 with three walks, one RBI, and scored three runs. Alexis Davis was 6-for-13 with a walk, double, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Haley Cronic finished the event 4-for-10 at the plate with a home run, two doubles, and four RBI. Halie Walther also had a home run. Madalyn Morton picked up the lone pitching victory of the weekend for the Chargers. She went 4.2 innings against Trinity Valley and allowed only one earned run on six hits. Montana Ledbetter closed out the win and recorded three strikeouts. Georgia Highlands (5-8) returns to action Wednesday at home in a 2 p.m. doubleheader against USC-Salkehatchie. The Chargers will also travel to Southern Union State CC Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader start.

The Adairsville Lady Tigers soccer team started the regular season Monday night with a 5-1 win at Gordon Central. Kaylee Jordan and Giorgia Conduff scored goals in the first half as Adairsville took a 2-0 lead. The host Warriors scored early in the second half to narrow the margin to 2-1, but the Tigers answered with three unanswered tallies to close out the win. Taylor Rhoades, Megan Hardin, and Cat Wheeler scored second half goals for Adairsville. Annie McCormick started in net and picked up the win. Sarah Brownlee also saw action in goal late in the game. Adairsville (1-0) hosts Fannin County Wednesday and Darlington Friday.
