The Cass boys basketball team led most of the game Saturday night at Columbia High School in Decatur, but the host Eagles rallied with a 30-point fourth quarter to send the game to overtime and escaped with a 78-75 Class AAAAA state tournament win to end the Colonels’ season. Cass led 10-7 after the first eight minutes, 27-19 at halftime, and 43-35 through three quarters before Columbia came storming back. The Eagles outscored the Colonels 30-22 in the final eight minutes to knot the score at 65 at the end of regulation. Columbia’s Devin Longstreet and Julius Coleman paced the Eagles with 20 points each. Kawasaki Ricks and D’Kwan Harris also reached double figures with 11 points apiece. Zaylan Chaney, who had to leave the game briefly due to injury in the fourth quarter, led Cass with 19 points. Braxton Benham and C.J. Pipkin followed with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Andrew Glaze contributed nine points. Jordan Ford and Zay Jackson chipped in eight apiece. Jaquan Ford added five points for the Colonels. “We worked so hard,” said a disappointed Cass head coach Sean Glaze after the game. “That was a gut-wrenching loss. We built an 11-point lead but let it slip away in the second half to their offensive rebounds and uncontested threes. I’m so upset for our seniors.” The three-point loss in the state tournament ends the Colonels’ season with a 16-13 record. It also marks the completion of the high school basketball careers for seniors Jordan Ford, Jaquan Heard, and Alfred Washington. Columbia (17-11) advances to the Sweet Sixteen in Class 5A and will host Bainbridge Thursday in Decatur. Bainbridge, a 4-seed from Region 1AAAAA, upset Riverdale Saturday in a low-scoring contest 36-33.

The Woodland High School wrestling team won a fourth state championship over the past two seasons by capturing the 2020 Traditional Championship this weekend in Macon. Woodland was powered to the state title by a trio of individual state champions at the Macon Centreplex. Caden McCrary (138 pounds), Caleb Henson (145), and Jaxon Smith (170) each took their weight classes in Class AAAAA while the Wildcats had seven more state placers. McCrary defeated his opponent from Ola High with a 9-5 decision to capture his third-straight individual state championship. Henson completed an undefeated season with a sudden victory win over Francis Morrissey of Veterans and Smith captured his second-straight title with a major decision over his Union Grove opponent. Three Woodland wrestlers finished as state runner-ups after reaching the finals with three straight wins. Colton Bishop (126) lost by fall to his Carrollton opponent. Caleb Jones (132) dropped a 7-2 championship match decision to his opponent from Veterans and Cole Cochran (160) lost in the finals to his opponent from Buford. Other state placers for the Wildcats included Easton Bishop (120) who went 4-1 at the state finals; Bryce Collum (152) was 4-2 and finished fourth; Bryce Shedd (220) finished fourth with a 3-2 tournament; and Beau Jernigan (285) placed sixth by going 3-3 at the state finals. Woodland accumulated 210 team points to win Class AAAAA in dominant fashion. Buford was second with 175 and Veterans placed third with 161 points. Ola and Harris County rounded out the top five teams. The Wildcats have now won back-to-back Dual State Championships and back-to-back Traditional State Championships. Cass was led by Bryce Kresho (120) who won his weight division’s state championship. Kresho, defeated his Veterans opponent with a 7-3 decision in the finals. Five other Cass wrestlers completed the weekend as state placers. Eli Doolittle (113) placed fourth. Tyler McKnight (126) and Noah Hoffmeier (220) finished fifth in their respective weight classes. Zach McKnight (152) and Reed Davis (182) wrapped up sixth place finishes. Adairsville finished eighth as a team in Class AAA which was won by Sonoraville. North Hall and Lumpkin County finished second and third in the classification. Angel Banda pinned his Sonoraville opponent to win the AAA state championship in the 113-pound division. Dalton Cornett (160) lost a tough 3-1 decision in the finals to finish as state runner-up and James Standridge (132) finished third for the Tigers with a 4-1 weekend on the mats. Cartersville finished tenth in the team standings in Class AAAA which was won by Woodward Academy. Gilmer and West Laurens placed second and third in the classification. Jabril Williams upset the top seed in his weight class in the opening round and made it all the way to the finals of the 160-pound division before finishing as a state runner-up. Tyler Earick (113) was 4-2 for the tournament and placed fourth. Giles Turner went 3-2 at the state finals and placed fifth while Shadre Hurst (285) placed sixth in his weight class.

Cass High baseball split a home doubleheader Saturday with Northwest Whitfield at the Cass Athletic Complex. The Colonels took the opener 5-4 and the Bruins won the second game, 9-6. In the first game, Cass trailed 4-1 through five innings but scored twice in each of the final two frames for a come-from-behind win. Blaine Ingram provided the heroics in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run, walk-off triple for the Colonels final two runs. In the second game, Northwest Whitfield grabbed a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning and added four more in the sixth to build a 9-3 advantage. Cass threatened with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate, but came up short. In addition to Ingram’s late heroics in the opening game, Thomas Botts was 2-for-3 at the plate. Matt Ballas had a double and two RBI. Logan Nelson, Jordan Gani, and winning pitcher Carson Hill added one hit each. Hill (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 3K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of starter Jayden Smith (4 IP, 4R, 1ER, 2H, 4BB, 6K). In the Colonels’ 9-6 loss, Matt Shook was 2-for-3 with a walk, triple, and one RBI. Gani added a double and three RBI. Thomas Botts (3 IP, 3ER, 2H, 4BB, 1K) started on the mound for Cass and suffered the pitching loss. Chase Botts (1ER, 1BB) , Logan Nelson (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB, 4K), and Ingram (2 IP, 4R, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 6K) also pitched in the loss. Cass (2-1) travels to Sonoraville Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch, plays at Rockmart Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., and hosts Sonoraville on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

In a battle of Tigers Saturday at Adairsville, the local Tigers swept visiting Temple 11-4 and 7-2 in a baseball doubleheader. In the opener, the Adairsville offense exploded for eleven runs on ten hits in an 11-4 victory. Meanwhile, three Adairsville pitchers — Wade Conduff, Jacob Ray, and Wade Dooley — combined to limit Temple to only a pair of earned runs on four hits. The trio combined for 11 strikeouts. Wade Dooley, who worked the final three and one-third innings was credited with the win. Evan Sanders had three hits and one RBI for Adairsville. Tyler Driggers followed with a pair of hits and one RBI. Eli Agnew finished with a pair of RBI and had one hit. Chris Roper doubled while Logan Hunt, Conduff, and Elijah Padgett (RBI) added one hit apiece. Adairsville stole eleven bases in the win. Driggers swiped four and Hunt stole three bases. In Adairsville’s 7-2 second game win, Gunner Millsap (4 IP, 1ER, 4H, 3BB, 8K) earned the pitching victory and accumulated eight strikeouts. Grayson Belcher (3 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 3BB, 5K) worked the final three frames and was credited with a save. Adairsville led 3-1 through three innings before Temple (1-2) cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth. Adairsville then secured the victory with a four-run sixth inning. Jacob Ray had two hits for Adairsville including a solo home run. Wade Conduff (RBI) and Elijah Padgett both added two hits. Logan Hunt finished with a pair of RBIs and a double. Chris Roper contributed a hit and Tyler Driggers drove in one run. Adairsville (2-1) plays at Darlington Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and will host Armuchee Friday at 5 p.m.

Georgia Highlands College split a baseball doubleheader with Lincoln Trail CC (IL) Friday at LakePoint in Emerson. The Chargers recorded a 4-2 win but dropped a 6-1 decision. Johnny Dow (6 IP, 2ER, 6H, 8K) picked up a pitching win for GHC with Jett Kern (1 IP, 1BB, 3K) earning a save in the 4-2 victory. Chargers’ pitcher Conner Perry (5.2 IP, 4R, 0ER, 7H, 3BB, 6K) suffered the second game loss without allowing an earned run. Levi Ayers (1.1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) worked in relief. Mickey Maguire had a three-hit day in the doubleheader. He also scored a pair of runs. Joe Sutton finished the day with two hits including a double, a run scored, and two RBIs. Palmer Sapp recorded a pair of hits, scored a run, and walked twice. Brandon Prince had a double and two RBI in the Chargers win. Gavin Harmon walked three times, drove in a run, and stole a base in the doubleheader. Georgia Highlands (10-3) returns to the diamond Tuesday at LakePoint against Cleveland State (TN) at 3 p.m. and will face Lake Land College (IL) Thursday in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at LakePoint.

Woodland scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning at home Friday night, then reliever Trent Porter worked a scoreless seventh inning as the Wildcats came-from-behind to defeat Sprayberry, 2-1. A scoreless game through the first four innings, Sprayberry took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on back-to-back hits, a walk, and a hit batsman. It would be the only run plated by the Yellow Jackets in the game. Trevor Collum picked up the pitching win for Woodland by working a scoreless sixth inning. He struck out the side before Porter earned the save with two strikeouts of his own. Woodland pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Scotty Smith (3 IP, 0R, 3H, 1BB, 6K) started for the Wildcats and fanned six in the first three frames. Carter Heath (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 4K) worked the fourth and fifth innings. Woodland loaded the bases in the fateful sixth inning and scored their game winning runs without a hit. Three hit batsmen and a pair of walks in the inning plated the Wildcats’ go-ahead runs. Fisher Davis, Peyton Posey, and Smith had base hits for the Wildcats. Ryan Cross and Bryce Koshko combined for five of the Yellow Jackets’ six hits. The loss drops Sprayberry to 0-2 on the season. Woodland (1-1) hosts Rockmart Monday at 5:55 p.m.

The Woodland Wildcats are well on their way to capturing both the state team duals and state traditional championships for the second year in a row following Friday’s semifinal matches. Woodland will send six individuals to state championship matches Saturday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex and the Wildcats lead Class AAAAA with 195 team points heading into the final day of consolations and title matches. Colton Bishop (126), Caleb Jones (132), Caden McCrary (138), Caleb Henson (145), Cole Cochran (160), and Jaxon Smith (170) will all wrestle in state championship matches. Three additional Wildcats will wrestle for third place Saturday — Easton Bishop (120), Bryce Collum (152), and Bryce Shedd (220). Beau Jernigan (285) will wrestle for fifth. Cass is in seventh place in Class AAAAA heading into Saturday’s action. While the Colonels have only one finalist in Bryce Kresho (120); Eli Doolittle (113) will wrestle for third place while Tyler McKnight (126), Zach McKnight, Reed Davis (182), and Noah Hoffmeier (220) will each compete Saturday in a fifth place match. Adairsville is in seventh place in Class AAA when Saturday’s wrestling begins. Angel Banda (113) and Dalton Cornett (160) have reached the finals with James Standridge (132) going for third place. Cartersville is in 10th place through Friday night’s action in Class AAAA. Jabril Williams (160) is in the finals for the Canes. Tyler Earick (113) will compete for third place. Giles Turner (120) and Shadre Hurst (285) will wrestle in fifth place matches Saturday for Cartersville.

The Adairsville boys basketball team had their season come to a close Friday night with a 75-46 loss at Jefferson in the opening round of the Class AAA state tournament. Jefferson, the champions of Region 8-AAA, were led by Daniel Parker, Kam Robinson, and Jacob Radaker with 18, 13, and 12 points, respectively. The host Dragons led 15-10 after one quarter, 36-21 at the intermission, and 67-36 through three quarters. Jefferson (19-7) advances to next Thursday’s Round of 16 and will host the Peach County / Pierce County first round winner. Adairsville, who was the No. 4-seed from Region 6-AAA, has its 2019-20 campaign end with a 12-17 mark. The loss also marks the final game for seniors Gaven Crunkleton, Savaun Henderson, Malachi Gardner, Jonathan Jarrett, William Longmore, and Jaxon Welchel.

After a week of avoiding poor field conditions, Cass and Adairsville got their 2020 baseball schedules underway with Cass taking a 7-2 non-region win at the Cass Athletic Complex. Cass struck first with a pair of runs in the first inning and went ahead 3-1 in the second. The Tigers narrowed the margin to 3-2 in the fourth, but the Colonels added two runs in both the fifth and sixth frames to pull away. The Colonels used a trio of pitchers with Jordan Gani (4 IP, 2ER, 2H, 3BB, 5K) collecting the win on the mound. Jayden Smith (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) and Matt Shook (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3BB, 4K) pitched in relief for Cass. Gani led the Cass offense as well with a pair of hits that included a triple and four RBIs. Logan Nelson added two hits and also drove in a run. Blaine Ingram and Thomas Botts added the other Cass base hits. Logan Hunt, Tyler Driggers, and Wade Dooley had one hit each for Adairsville. Eli Agnew drove in a run. Eli Padgett (2 IP, 3ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K) took the pitching loss for Adairsville. The Tigers (0-1) are scheduled for a home doubleheader Saturday at 12 noon against Temple. Cass (1-0) has a doubleheader Saturday at home with Northwest Whitfield. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

One night after Alex Rios scored a hat-trick in a Cartersville win over Woodland, Canes' forward Brady Craig achieved a hat-trick of his own in a 4-0 win at Cass. Rios started the Cartersville scoring with a goal in the 15th minute off an assist from Joel Zazueta. Craig then posted goals in the 35th, 75th, and 78th minutes with assists credited to Daniel Abeja and Pedro Ghanem. “Brady had his best game as a Cane tonight with this hat trick,” said Cartersville head coach D.J. Paradis. “He was a physical forward that attacked at will tonight. He also used his speed and technical skills to attack all night.” Cartersville, now 3-0, travels to Rome on Tuesday. The Woodland High School wrestling team is off to a fantastic start at the 2020 GHSA State Traditional wrestling championships at the Macon Centreplex. The defending champion Wildcats already won the state duals championship earlier this year and will try to complete a two-year sweep of both the team duals and the traditional championship with a win this weekend. With all classifications finished with the championship round quarterfinals, all four locals teams are in the top ten of their respective classifications. Woodland has eight individuals still alive for state titles in the championship bracket semifinals to be completed Friday. The Wildcats, who qualified 12 for the state finals in Macon, are also at the top of the Class AAAAA standings with Veterans, Buford, Ola, and Harris County rounding out the top five. Cass has three individuals still vying for state titles and is sixth as a team in the standings after morning rounds Friday. Adairsville is ninth overall in Class AAA and has three wrestlers still in contention for individual state titles and Cartersville is tenth overall in Class AAAA with three individuals in the state semifinals.
