The Cartersville girls soccer team blanked Woodland Thursday night, 5-0, in a non-region matchup at Woodland High School. Kalyn Donegan had a first-half, hat-trick to put the Lady Canes up 3-0 at halftime. Devondria Johnson and Micah Vance assisted on the second and third goals for Donegan. Her opening goal came unassisted. Johnson added a goal on a free kick from about 35 yards out in the second half and Gracie Borkowsky found the back of the net off an assist from Kendyl Anderson to round out the Cartersville scoring. “The girls played well,” said Lady Canes coach Chad Murray. “We controlled the ball most of the night and had plenty of scoring opportunities. The girls are doing what we ask of them. When we combine maximum effort, good shape and making the simple, smart play, we will be a tough out.” The Cartersville girls (2-0) play at Rome next Tuesday.

The Cartersville High baseball team got off to a strong start Thursday night with a 12-4 win over Etowah at LakePoint in Emerson. The Hurricanes had eight players to record at least one hit each and seven batters drove in runs. Cartersville led 6-1 through three innings and tacked on five more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 11-1 lead. The Canes extended their lead to 12-1 in the top of the fifth before the Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the frame. Starting pitcher Micah Earwood (3.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 2H, 4BB, 4K) earned the win on the mound. Silas Freeman (1.2 IP, 3R, 0ER, 1H, 2BB, 4K) and Davis Williams (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3K) also pitched for Cartersville. Parker McPherson led the offense with a pair of doubles, a walk, and one RBI. Josh Davis also had two hits including a triple and one RBI. Chandler Tromza and Drew Rothschild both tripled and finished with three and two RBIs, respectively. Alan Thacker (2 RBI), Ben Williams (RBI), Jack Carter (RBI), and Hank Smith had the other Cartersville base hits. Carson Kirby hit a three-run home run for Etowah (0-2) in the fifth inning. The Eagles’ second inning run came on a bases loaded walk. Cartersville (1-0) will host Forsyth Central (1 p.m.) and Rockmart (4 p.m.) Saturday at Richard Bell Field.

The Georgia Highlands Chargers improved to 9-2 Thursday afternoon with a 7-4 win over visiting Lincoln Trail CC (IL) at LakePoint in Emerson. GHC broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs, then added two more in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. The Statesmen added a run in the eighth, but would get no closer. Chargers’ starting pitcher Ethan Underwood (6 IP, 3ER, 8H, 3K) picked up the victory on the mound. Stevie Szucs (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1K) worked the seventh inning and Jet Kern (2 IP, 1H, 3K) closed out the final two frames for Georgia Highlands. Mickey Maguire and Trace Twardoski had two hits each for the Chargers. Twardoski’s hits included a double and one RBI. David Smith hit a solo home run. Lavoisier Fisher tripled with one RBI. Joe Sutton doubled with one RBI and Palmer Sapp had the other GHC base hit. Omar Daniels had a sac fly and finished with a pair of RBIs. He also swiped a pair of bases. The Chargers (9-2) will host a doubleheader Friday with the Statesmen to close out the three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.

The Cartersville boys soccer team defeated Woodland Thursday night, 6-2. Alex Rios — who now has five goals in his first two games — had a first-half, hat-trick with goals in the tenth, 15th, and 28th minutes. Brady Craig, Pedro Ghanem, and Joel Zazueta were credited with assists on the Rios tallies. “Alex had a great game,” said Cartersville coach D.J. Paradis. “He constantly pressured their defense with quick runs and moved the ball with precision. Every shot he took was on frame.” The Wildcats scored a goal to narrow their deficit to two, but Joan Vargas scored for Cartersville in the 38th minute to restore the Hurricanes’ lead margin at halftime. Craig scored for Cartersville in the 47th minute and Joshua Morales added a goal with a penalty kick. Woodland scored a late goal for the 6-2 final score.

Woodland High baseball opened the 2020 season Wednesday night at LakePoint in Emerson with a 5-1 loss to Class 7A North Cobb. After both clubs plated a run in the first frame, the Warriors took a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Four scoreless innings followed before North Cobb (1-0) tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 final score. North Cobb’s Nathan Williams picked up the pitching win for the Warriors with three innings of work. He yielded one unearned run without allowing a hit and struck out six Wildcats. Joshua Dixon and Ethan Fry split the final four shutout innings on the mound for North Cobb. Williams had two hits including a triple and one RBI for the Warriors. Jake Mantooth doubled and finished with two RBIs. Woodland starter Peyton Posey (2 IP, 3ER, 4H, 1BB) suffered the pitching loss. Phoenix Cramer (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 1K), Trent Porter (2 IP, 0R, 3H, 3BB), and Scotty Smith (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 3BB) also pitched for the Wildcats. Jakiyon Porter, Smith, and Posey had the only Woodland hits — all singles. Woodland (0-1) is scheduled to host Sprayberry Friday at 5:55 p.m.

Cass High School head football coach Bobby Hughes has taken a new position created within the school's athletic department, becoming athletic coordinator as well as head of strength, conditioning, and nutrition. He leaves the role of head coach after six seasons leading the Colonels' program. His team was 4-6 in 2019 and he accumulated a 19-41 mark at Cass during his tenure. Hughes joined the Cass football staff as a defensive coordinator under former head coach Rick Casko before taking over as head coach in 2014. The Colonels were 5-5 that season and 6-4 in 2015. Hughes held head coaching positions at two prior stops. He won a pair of region titles and was 42-17 in five seasons at Macon County. He was also head coach at Howard High School in Macon for three seasons. The search will now begin for a new head football coach at Cass. No immediate time table has been set at the time of this release.

Four members of the 2019 Cartersville High School football team — Jonah Gambill, Devonte Ross, Evan Slocum, and Marquail Coaxum — were named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Class AAAA North All-State Team. Offensive lineman Jonah Gambill and wide receiver Devonte Ross were selected on the offensive side. Slocum and Coaxum were both named All-State defensive backs. Georgia Highlands College baseball swept a Tuesday doubleheader with Bryan College JV 11-0 and 7-4 in games played at LakePoint in Emerson. In the opener, the Chargers scored eight runs in the bottom of the first and added single runs in each of their next three frames to close out a five-inning, mercy-rule win. Lavoisier Fisher had two hits and drove in a run for Georgia Highlands. Palmer Sapp tripled and added a sacrifice fly to drive in three runs. Joe Sutton doubled home a run. Trace Twardoski tripled and Bam Thomas finished with a pair of RBIs. Max Kops and Omar Daniels added one hit each for the Chargers. Four pitchers combined for the shutout. Jacob Ryan (2 IP, 3H, 5K), Jakob Brown (1 IP, 1H, 1K), Levi Ayers (1 IP, 1H, 1K), and Jett Kern (1 IP, 1H, 3K) pitched for GHC. In the 7-4 nightcap win, pitchers Chase Townsend (4.1 IP, 4ER, 5H, 3BB, 8K) and Ryan Smithson (2.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 5K) combined to scatter six hits and strike out 13. The Chargers led 3-2 through two innings and extended their lead to 5-2 in the third. Bryan JV posted two more runs in the top of the fourth to narrow the margin to 5-4, but Georgia Highlands answered with two runs in the fourth and kept Bryan off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Twardoski doubled twice in the second game and drove in a pair of runs. Gavin Harmon doubled and finished with two hits and two RBIs. Kops also added two hits and one RBI. Jett Kern, Brandon Price, and Alex Skepton (RBI) contributed one hit apiece for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (8-2) is scheduled for a three game series Saturday and Sunday at LakePoint against Lincoln Trail CC. Saturday’s doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. Sunday’s single game is scheduled for a 12 noon first pitch.

The Adairsville girls basketball program has produced some solid players over the past few seasons. A trio of them put together outstanding performances at the next level this past week. Piedmont freshman Nakiyah Washington continues to shine during her debut season with the Lions. She earned her second USA South Rookie of the Week selection after putting together a pair of outstanding games. She totaled 32 points, 21 rebounds, 13 steals, nine assists and six blocks in two wins. Over in Chicago, Josie Summerville is amassing solid games in her sophomore season. She has started a vast majority of North Park's games. But even when she comes off the bench she contributes, as evidenced by her 10-point, 10-rebound double-double Saturday. Another member of Adairsville's Class of 2019, Breeana Wilson had an impressive showing in the midweek. A Georgia Highlands guard, Wilson popped up with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, in a 105-36 victory. Elsewhere, former Cartersville baseball player Carrington Evans homered for Augusta; Life's Jordan Baldwin and Elijah Wilhoit reached the finals of the Mid-South Conference swim meet; and Woodland graduate Trevor Knowles had two top-five finishes and a PR in his most recent track meet. BASEBALL Levi Ayers (Georgia Highlands So., Cartersville) — Ayers struck out five batters across two innings but allowed four unearned runs for the second straight appearance in an 11-9 loss to Volunteer State Sunday at LakePoint. Bailey Campbell (Young Harris Jr., Cass) — Campbell went 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in a 5-0 win over Mississippi College Saturday in Clinton, Mississippi. Carrington Evans (Augusta Jr., Cartersville) — Evans socked a three-run homer in his final at-bat of the weekend, as Augusta suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of Georgia College. Evans went hitless with a walk on Saturday. In Sunday's doubleheader, he finished 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in the opener. His three-run blast capped a 2-for-4 performance, which also included a double, in the series finale. Lane Griffith (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville) — Griffith started off a weekend sweep of Savannah State with a 3-for-4 showing Saturday. His RBI single in the eighth inning pushed West Georgia's lead to 8-6 in an eventual 9-6 win. The following day, the Wolves' starting catcher was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one driven in, helping his side to another 9-6 win. In the series finale later that day, Griffith was 1-for-3 in a 13-2 romp. Kenny Jinks (Shorter So., Woodland) — Jinks had an easy time closing out Mars Hill in a 9-0 rout Sunday in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The former Region 7-AAAAA pitcher of the year needed just eight pitches to retire the side in order, using a flyout, a strikeout and a groundout to polish off the win. Logan Martin (Sewanee Fr., Cartersville) — Martin had a rough first collegiate start, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits in two-thirds of an inning. Both of his outs were recorded via the strikeout in an eventual 11-11 tie with Brescia. Gage Morris (LaGrange Fr., Cartersville) — Morris got his side out of an eighth-inning jam in the season opener for the Panthers. However, he allowed a leadoff triple to begin the ninth and was lifted. The runner scored the final tally in a 9-6 defeat for LaGrange against Roanoke Saturday at home. Harrison Osborn (Point Jr., Cartersville) — Osborn threw one inning, allowing one run in an 18-3 victory over Tuskegee Tuesday. He picked up the win Saturday in the finale of a three-game set with South Carolina-Beaufort, helping Point move to 7-0 on the year. In a 10-8 victory, Osborn gave up one hit against one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings of work. He entered with his team down 8-2 and left with the Skyhawks leading 9-8. Devin Warner (Grayson So., Cartersville) — Warner finished 0-for-6 with a walk and an RBI in a season-opening doubleheader split against Seminole State. PRO BASKETBALL Elijah Robinson (Atenas Cordoba, Argentina; Excel Christian) — Robinson came off the bench in his team's two games this past week, although he still saw 24 and 25 minutes, respectively, in a 90-83 loss Thursday and an 89-71 win Saturday. He compiled 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal across the two games. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Jacquez Fountain (Albany Tech Fr., Cass) — Fountain put up 22 shots in each of Albany Tech's two games this past week. He connected on eight attempts in a 61-57 loss to Gordon, and nailed nine of his tries in an 86-58 rout of East Georgia. In the defeat, Fountain added six rebounds and an assist to his 24 points. In the victory, he contributed six rebounds, five assists, one steal and one block to go with 23 points. Ashton Hagans (Kentucky So., Cartersville native) — Hagans had a fairly quiet week, totaling 16 points, nine assists, six rebounds and three steals in wins over Mississippi State on Tuesday and Tennessee on Saturday. Whitney Harris (Toccoa Falls So., Woodland) — Harris went scoreless in a 66-26 loss to LaGrange Thursday before bouncing back with six points in a 65-60 defeat against Johnson Saturday. She also totaled five rebounds and two assists across both games. Carter Hedden (Hocking So., Cass) — Hedden and Hocking had a busy week with four games. It started Monday with an 89-79 loss to Garrett College JV, in which Hedden had one assist. He saw 16 minutes against Columbus State CC Wednesday, scoring seven points with two assists and one rebound. Hocking doubled up Appalachian Bible Friday, as Hedden managed two rebounds and an assist. On Sunday, Hocking downed Southern State CC with Hedden contributing two assists in the winning effort. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State Jr., Cartersville) — McClinic had one rebound in three total minutes across wins over Florida College (74-61, Thursday) and Brewton-Parker (75-71, Saturday). Coriana McDaniel (Andrew Fr., Adairsville) — McDaniel saw nine minutes of floor time but recorded no stats for the week. Andrew defeated Trinity Baptist (45-31) but fell to Southern Georgia Tech (101-54). Kyla Michienzi (Piedmont R-Fr., Cass) — Michienzi contributed 10 points in an 81-56 win over Maryville Tuesday. She added two rebounds and the same number of steals and blocks in the victory. Saturday, she had three points, two assists and a rebound in a 62-50 triumph over Berea. Jana Morning (Berry Jr., Cass) — In almost a carbon copy of last weekend, Morning had trouble getting going from the field Friday, scoring just five points on 2-of-13 shooting in a 49-44 loss to Centre. But the hard-nosed guard bounced back Sunday with an extremely efficient 7-of-9 showing, good enough for 17 points in a 75-55 win over Sewanee. She totaled 11 assists, eight rebounds and two steals across both games. Jaylon Pugh (Furman So., Cartersville) — Pugh saw four minutes of action in a 79-57 win over Mercer Wednesday. He had one foul and one turnover in the limited run. Josie Summerville (North Park So., Adairsville) — Summerville had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in a 58-54 loss to Wheaton Saturday. Earlier in the week, she finished with seven points, five boards, one assist, one block and one steal in a 70-65 victory over Carroll. Darius Thrower (Truett McConnell Sr., Excel Christian) — Thrower had eight points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in helping Truett McConnell to an 87-82 overtime win over St. Andrew's Wednesday. The victory snaps a 16-game losing streak by the Bears. Nakiyah Washington (Piedmont Fr., Adairsville) — Washington returned to the starting lineup this past week and took full advantage, falling just shy of back-to-back double-doubles. The former DTN Player of the Year managed 13 points and nine rebounds against Maryville, and she followed it up with 19 points and 12 boards in the victory over Berea. Washington added nine combined assists. Her defense was also outstanding, as she totaled 13 steals and six blocks in the two wins. For her efforts, Washington garnered her second USA South Rookie of the Week honor. Carrod Watson (North Georgia Sr., Woodland) — Across a pair of games last week, Watson had seven points, eight rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal. North Georgia defeated Georgia Southwestern (90-77, Wednesday) and fell to UNC-Pembroke (81-65, Saturday). Breeana Wilson (Georgia Highlands Fr., Adairsville) — Wilson racked up 19 points in a 105-36 drubbing of Southern Crescent Tech Wednesday. She added three assists, two rebounds and two steals in the lopsided win. SOFTBALL Colbi Ballard (Shorter Fr., Cartersville) — Ballard went 0-for-2 in her official collegiate debut Sunday in a 13-2, five-inning loss to Young Harris. Skylar Chappell (Cottey College Fr., Woodland) — Chappell went a combined 1-for-3 in her first collegiate series, as Cottey swept Saint Mary Saturday at home. In Game 2, Chappell singled and later reached on an error before scoring her first team's fourth run in an eventual 12-4 victory. Paris Poston (Columbus State So., Cartersville) — Poston finished 1-for-8 with three runs scored and a steal over the weekend in the CSU Classic. After a winless opening weekend, Columbus State took three out of four games in its own tournament. SWIMMING Jordan Baldwin (Life So., Woodland) — Baldwin placed ninth in the 200=yard backstroke and 14th in the 100-yard backstroke at the Mid-South Conference Championships. Life finished fourth overall. Elijah Wilhoit (Life Fr., Cass) — Wilhoit came in 12th in the 200-yard freestyle at the Mid-South Conference Championships. Life finished fourth overall. TRACK AND FIELD Trevor Knowles (Albion Jr., Woodland) — Knowles paced the Britons with a third-place finish in the triple jump and fourth-place showing in the long jump Saturday at the Dragon Grand Prix in Tiffin, Ohio. He also set a personal record in the 200-meter dash, crossing in a time of 23.89 seconds. London Shaw (Jacksonville State Fr., Cartersville) — Shaw had a pair of top-25 finishes this past weekend at the South Carolina Invitational. The former Cane was 17th in shot put (11.86 meters) and 23rd in weight throw (12.58 meters). Stephen Smith (Kennesaw State Fr., Cass) — Smith ended up in a three-way tie for ninth in the pole vault Saturday at the South Carolina Invitational. The Adairsville boys basketball team will represent Region 6-AAA as the league’s No. 4-seed next weekend after falling to Calhoun Monday night at North Murray in the region tournament’s third place game, 59-49. The Tigers led 14-8 after the opening eight minutes and were tied 20-20 at halftime, but Calhoun surged ahead in the third quarter to take a 44-34 lead and held on down the stretch for a 10-point win. Gage Maffetone, Dylan Faulkner, and Chris Lewis led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 21, 19, and 10 points, respectively. Tucker Deams led Adairsville with a game-high 25 points. Malachi Gardner scored seven. Savaun Henderson and Jaxon Welchel contributed five each. T.J. Printup tossed in four. William Longmire scored two points and Courtney Slocum added one for the Tigers. Calhoun (17-10) advances as the Region 6-AAA No. 3-seed and will play at Franklin County in the first round of the state tournament.
