Participating in The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, the Georgia Highlands College softball team opened with a pair of one-sided wins Friday afternoon over teams from Michigan. The Chargers defeated Delta College 10-0 and Muskegon College 9-1. Madalyn Morton (6 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 7K) tossed the complete game shutout in the Chargers’ opener. Maggie Shandera (4 IP, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 4K) was the starter and winner in the second game. Montana Ledbetter (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) also worked an inning in the circle for GHC. The Chargers banged out 15 hits in the win over Delta College. Lacey Rutledge had four doubles and one RBI in four trips to the plate. Izzy Marcotte had three hits including a double, home run, and four RBI. Hailey Cronic added two hits including a home run and three RBI. In the win over Muskegon, eight of nine in the Georgia Highlands’ batting order had at least one hit. Rutledge had a pair of hits including a double and one RBI. Natalia Herrera and Cronic also doubled. Deyonce Lewis contributed a triple for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (9-10) plays Mercyhurst Northeast (Pa.) Saturday at 1:45 p.m. and another opponent to be determined in the round robin format. The Chargers will wrap up play in Clermont Sunday with games against Alpena CC (Mich.) and Cuyahoga CC (Ohio).

The Cartersville Hurricanes rallied for a come-from-behind win over Helena (Ala.) and took down the 2nd-ranked team in Georgia’s Class 6A Thursday evening in a pair of victories at the 8th annual Perfect Game High School Showdown in Hoover, Alabama. Cartersville defeated Houston County (Ga.) in the first game 5-1 and topped Helena (Ala.) 8-6. In the win over Helena, the Canes trailed 4-0 through the first four innings before scoring eight times over the next three frames. Cartersville tied the game 4-4 in the top of the fifth and took an 8-4 advantage in the top of the seventh. The Huskies challenged with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Canes’ pitcher Davis Williams was able to end the threat with a groundout to shortstop Josh Davis. Silas Freeman (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for Cartersville in relief of starter Hayden Davidson (4 IP, 4R, 3ER, 3H, 3BB, 6K). Davis Williams (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) worked the final frame for the Canes on the mound. Tyler Williamson had two hits including a double and two RBI for Cartersville. Curt Bonner also had a pair of hits and one RBI. Parker McPherson (double, 2 RBI), Jack Carter, and Drew Rothschild had the other Canes’ hits. CARTERSVILLE 5, HOUSTON COUNTY 1 In the opening game played at Mountain Brook High School, Cartersville got outstanding pitching from starter Micah Earwood and closer Davis Williams then took advantage of eight walks, a hit batsman, and five errors by Georgia Class 6A second-ranked Houston County for a 5-1 win. Earwood (6 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 9K) went six strong innings on the mound for the win and struck out nine. Williams (1 IP, 1K) needed only seven pitches and struck out one in a spotless seventh inning to close out the victory. The Canes scored twice in the first inning, two more in the second inning, and added a run in the third. The only Bears run was scored in the fifth inning. Jaden Woods had a two-hit game and stole a base for Houston County. The Bears slipped to 5-4 for the season. Josh Davis and Elliott Eastin had the two Cartersville base hits. Williams drove in a run in the third inning with a bases loaded walk. The Hurricanes (7-3) have now won six straight and will start bracket play in the Hoover tournament Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Their opponent to be determined by pool play Thursday night and earlier on Friday.

For the 65th year, Cartersville Little League will kick off its new season this weekend with a variety of activities and 2020 Opening Day Ceremonies. The year gets started Friday night with a family dinner and continues with skills competitions for players and a dad’s home run derby. There will be a bouncy slide and obstacle course for children to enjoy on one of the fields and each of the teams will raffle off team gift baskets as an additional fund raiser. Saturday, the Opening Day Ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. with players asked to line up at Rudy York Field beginning at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to come out and enjoy all the activities and support Cartersville Little League. Little League results are provided to Bartow Sports Zone by Bartow County Little League and Cartersville Little League. It was a difficult weather night for all teams in action but the evening saw the Woodland and Adairsville girls play to a 1-1 draw while the Cartersville girls dropped a 3-0 decision at North Paulding. WOODLAND GIRLS 1, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The Woodland and Adairsville girls played to a 1-1 tie Wednesday night during rainy conditions with both goals coming in the second half. Tiera Feanny scored for Woodland in the first four minutes of the second half to break a 0-0 tie. Adairsville (6-0-1) answered with a tying goal with approximately 15 minutes remaining. The Lady Tigers return to Region 6-AAA play next week and hosts Coahulla Creek on Tuesday. Woodland (0-2-1) plays at Cass Friday. WOODLAND BOYS 5, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The Woodland boys pulled away from Adairsville for a 5-1 win in non-region play Wednesday night at Wildcat Stadium. Woodland led 2-1 at halftime before outscoring the visitors 3-0 in the second half. NORTH PAULDING 3, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 0 In a game that was moved to North Paulding and the Wolfpack's sports turf playing surface due to recent rains, North Paulding posted a trio of second half goals to defeat the Lady Canes Wednesday night, 3-0. Cartersville head coach Chad Murray described the opening goal for the Wolfpack as a pinball play from a corner kick. He added that the second and third goals for North Paulding were the result of his Lady Canes’ defensive mistakes. “We haven’t been able to get on a field and practice due to the recent rains,” said a frustrated Murray Wednesday night. “Our touch was off and our passes looked like we haven’t played in a while because we haven’t been able to get on a field. I’m proud of the girls and their effort. We just need some practice time.”

It took nine innings Wednesday night, but the Woodland Wildcats started their 2020 Region 7-AAAAA campaign on the right foot with a 2-0 win over Paulding County at LakePoint. Starting pitchers Scotty Smith (6 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 12K) of Woodland and Tanner Bastings (5.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 9K) of Paulding battled scoreless into the sixth inning. Robbie Reeves (3.1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 3BB, 7K) of the Patriots ultimately suffered the loss in relief. Woodland’s Trent Porter (3 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win by working the final three frames for the Wildcats. Peyton Posey drove in the game-winning runs in the top of the ninth with a two-run, two-out triple. Trent Porter walked with one out in the inning and his courtesy runner Fisher Davis scored. Jakiyon Porter had also walked in front of Posey and scored. Phoenix Cramer had the other two hits for Woodland in the game including a sixth inning double. Cramer, Posey, and Zach Wilson stole one base each in the contest. Reeves (double), Mason Tanner, and Colin Hynek had the Paulding County base hits. The loss drops the Patriots to 9-2 overall and 0-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland improved to 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in region play. The two teams will complete their two-game series Friday at Woodland.

The Woodland girls soccer team defeated Region 7-AAAAA opponent Kell Tuesday night 2-0 with a pair of late goals off the foot of Grace Webb. Webb broke open a scoreless game with only 16 minutes remaining. He second tally came with just under six minutes remaining. Lady Cats’ goalkeeper Chloe Ravish finished with 13 saves in the Woodland victory. Woodland (1-2, 1-1) hosts Adairsville Wednesday afternoon.

The Woodland boys tennis team made quick and easy work of East Paulding Tuesday evening in a 5-0 Region 7-AAAAA win. The Wildcats swept the three singles lines without dropping a game and the Raiders forfeited the two doubles lines. WOODLAND BOYS 5, EAST PAULDING 0 Singles Line 1 — Bryce VanOrder won 6-0, 6-0 Line 2 — Connor Gunnell won 6-0, 6-0 Line 3 — Adam Pirkle won 6-0, 6-0 Doubles East Paulding forfeited both doubles lines.

The Adairsville Tigers dropped their fifth straight game Tuesday night with a 4-2 loss to LaFayette in a Tigers' home game moved to LakePoint in Emerson. The Ramblers scored single runs in the first two frames before the Tigers narrowed the margin to 2-1 in the third inning. LaFayette went up 3-1 in the fourth inning and added a run in the seventh. Adairsville added a single run in the final inning. Trent Currie (3 IP, 1ER, 3H, 2BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for LaFayette in his start. The Ramblers utilized three more pitchers with Dylan Deering (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 3BB, 4K) closing out the final two frames. Adairsville’s Jack Whitley (6.2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 9H, 2BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Brendon Carroll (0.1 IP) struck out one batter. Davis Richardson and Nick Adams led the Ramblers with two hits each. Evan Sanders had two hits for Adairsville. Tyler Driggers (double), Wade Conduff (triple), and Evan Henry (triple) had the other Tigers’ hits. Adairsville (2-6) plays Armuchee at home Friday in a final tune-up before Region 6-AAA action begins next week.

The Northwest Georgia Tip Off Club held its 34th annual basketball banquet Tuesday night in the Krannert Center Ballroom on the campus of Berry College with several local players receiving recognition. The annual event precedes the organization’s 6th annual Senior All-Star Games which will take place March 12 at the Georgia Highlands College Rome campus. Cat Wheeler of the Lady Tigers posted three goals as the Adairsville girls blanked Sonoraville Tuesday night, 7-0. That win came in front of the Tigers' second straight region victory -- a 4-3 win over the Phoenix. Elsewhere, the Lady Colonels dropped a Region 7-AAAAA match to Paulding County but the boys team rallied in the second half for a 2-0 win. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 7, SONORAVILLE 0 The Lady Tigers blanked visiting Sonoraville Tuesday night 7-0 in a Region 6-AAA match in Tiger Valley. Adairsville, who has not allowed a goal in region play this season, held a 2-0 lead at halftime on a pair of goals by junior Cat Wheeler. She found the net in the 11th minute on a penalty kick and found the back of the net three minutes later off an assist from Taylor Rhoades. In the second half, the Lady Tigers put the game away with five, unanswered goals. Sophomore Megan Hardin scored on a penalty kick and also contributed to a Sonoraville own-goal when her corner kick ended up crossing the goal line. Senior Millie Conduff scored on a pair of second half penalty kicks and Wheeler added a goal with Megan Hardin providing the assist. Adairsville controlled play through out the contest and took 25 shots on goal. The Lady Phoenix managed only five shots on net and four of those came off direct or penalty kicks. The Adairsville coaching staff lauded the play of Wheeler for her versatility in the game. She played three different positions — striker, midfield, and goalkeeper. She also scored a hat trick. The Lady Tigers (6-0, 2-0) travel to Woodland Wednesday evening for a non-region game. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 4, SONORAVILLE 3 The Tigers won their second straight Region 6-AAA match Tuesday night in Tiger Valley with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Phoenix. The win comes on the heels of last Friday’s overtime 3-2 win over Haralson County. Adairsville (2-2, 2-0) is scheduled to host Coahulla Creek next Tuesday. CASS BOYS 2, PAULDING COUNTY 0 The Colonels won their first Region 7-AAAAA match Tuesday night defeating Paulding County 2-0 with a pair of second half goals. This week's 'Athletes Beyond Bartow' update for college basketball, swimming, tennis, and track & field includes accolades, career highs, and runs in post-season tournaments. Former Cass standout Jacquez Fountain was named GCAA Freshman of the Year. North Georgia senior Carrod Watson, who played at Woodland, scored his career high in a recent Peach Belt Conference game, and former Adairsville standout Nakiyah Washington received all-conference honors in USA-South Athletic Conference. (L-R) Jacquez Fountain, Carrod Watson, Nakiyah Washington COLLEGE BASKETBALL Jacquez Fountain (Albany Tech Fr., Cass) — Fountain didn't have his best shooting week, hitting just 33% of his attempts from the field in both games, but he helped lead Albany Tech to a pair of wins nonetheless. He finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds in an 80-73 win over Southern Georgia Tech before posting 21 points and nine boards in a 73-60 triumph over South Georgia. Monday, he was named the GCAA Freshman of the Year, along with landing spots on the all-region first team and all-freshman team. Ashton Hagans (Kentucky So., Cartersville native) — Hagans totaled 15 points, 12 assists, seven rebounds and four steals in wins over Texas A&M (69-60, Tuesday) and Auburn (73-66, Saturday). The Wildcats have now won 12 of their last 13 games, including avenging the only loss in that stretch with their most recent victory. Whitney Harris (Toccoa Falls So., Woodland) — Harris racked up nine points and seven rebounds in a win Thursday over Johnson University (Florida) in the first round of the NCCAA Division II South Region tournament. She added nine points and three boards in a 68-47 loss Friday to Pensacola Christian in the tourney semifinals. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State Jr., Cartersville) — McClinic played 10 minutes and scored two points with one rebound and one assist in an 82-41 loss Thursday to Martin Methodist. Coriana McDaniel (Andrew Fr., Adairsville) — McDaniel saw 17 minutes of game time off the bench Tuesday in the opening round of the GCAA tournament. She finished with 10 points, two rebounds and one assist in a 74-49 loss to East Georgia State. Kyla Michienzi (Piedmont R-Fr., Cass) — Michienzi finished with 13 points, two rebounds and a steal in Piedmont's 59-49 win Saturday over William Peace in the semifinals of the USA South conference tournament. She managed just three points in a 66-58 loss Sunday to Berea in the tournament championship game. Jaylon Pugh (Furman So., Cartersville) — Pugh saw action in both of Furman's double-digit wins this past week. He missed all three of his shot attempts in an 81-67 win Wednesday at UNC-Greensboro. Saturday, Pugh bounced back to score five points with one assist in nine minutes of an 82-58 rout of The Citadel. Furman earned a bye in the Southern Conference Championship and will face either Wofford or The Citadel in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Saturday in Asheville. Josie Summerville (North Park So., Adairsville) — Summerville compiled five points, two rebounds and two steals in North Park's 91-84 loss to North Central in the first round of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament. Nakiyah Washington (Piedmont Fr., Adairsville) — Washington racked up 25 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal in the victory over William Peace. A second-team all-USA South West Division selection, Washington added 11 points, four boards and two steals in the title game. Carrod Watson (North Georgia Sr., Woodland) — Watson had quite the week. After a scoreless seven-minute stint in a 77-65 loss Wednesday to Young Harris, Watson went off for a career-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also racked up nine rebounds and two steals in a thrilling 113-104 double-overtime win Saturday over Clayton State. North Georgia will head Wednesday to UNC-Pembroke for the Peach Belt Conference quarterfinals. SWIMMING Rylee Moss (Old Dominion Fr., Adairsville) — Moss won the "B Final" in the 400-yard individual medley at the Conference USA Women's Championship this past weekend at Georgia Tech. Moss finished in 4 minutes, 25.22 seconds — faster than one of the competitors in the "A Final." The former Adairsville star placed 10th in the prelims but shaved more than 4 1/2 seconds off her time in the finals. Moss also competed in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly. The freshman came in 20th in the 100 prelims and 24th in the finals (eighth in the "C Final"). She came in 14th in the 200 prelims at 2:04.25, but results of the 200 finals were not available. TENNIS Houston Medlock (Piedmont So., Adairsville) — Medlock eased to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dylan Masters at No. 3 Singles in a 6-3 win over Pfeiffer Sunday in Demorest. Medlock and No. 1 Doubles partner Chris Bale fell 8-4, but the Lions won the other two doubles matches to still secure the point. TRACK AND FIELD London Shaw (Jacksonville State Fr., Cartersville) — Shaw competed in the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships last week in Birmingham, Alabama. She topped out at 12.21 meters in the shot put and 13.07 in the weight throw. Trevor Knowles (Albion Jr., Woodland) — Knowles finished in the top-five in all three jumping events at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Championship Saturday in Angola, Indiana. He placed second in the triple jump, while coming in fifth in both the long and high jump events. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (7th yr. pro; LHP; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… entered a 3-3 game in the seventh inning last Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox but only recorded two outs and gave up a three-run home run to Josh Ockimey following two walks. He also entered in the sixth inning Sunday against the Detroit Tigers during a 3-3 game allowing a hit, three walks, and a run. It was an eventual Pirates’ 8-4 loss. Pittsburgh is 2-7-1 in Grapefruit League spring training games this year. The Pirates have games this week in Florida with Toronto, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, and the New York Yankees. ANTHONY SEIGLER — New York Yankees (3rd yr. pro; C; Cartersville HS)… In the highlights of several recent articles regarding the switch hitting backstop, Bronx Baseball Daily projects Seigler as the Low Class-A Charleston River Dogs 2020 starting catcher. He was recently listed as the Yankees’ 15th-ranked overall prospect by Bleacher Report and 18th-ranked prospect by The Athletic. Seigler will look to stay healthy in 2020 to move up the Yankees’ farm system. He suffered season-ending injuries in 2018 and 2019. SOFTBALL SKYLAR CHAPPELL — Cottey College (Fr., C/1B, Woodland HS)… made a pinch hitting appearance but did not reach base Sunday in the Comets’ 13-9 second game win over Missouri Valley College. Cottey (12-4) has an unusual three week gap in the schedule before hosting Central Christian (Kansas) for a doubleheader March 25. PRESLY EDWARDS — Wesleyan College (Fr., C, Cartersville HS)… went 0-for-3 Sunday in a pair of home losses to Pfeiffer University. She made an appearance as a pinch hitter in the opening game and started as the designated player in Game 2. This week, the Wolves (3-3) will host doubleheaders with Fort Valley State Tuesday and Agnes Scott Friday before traveling to Reinhardt Sunday afternoon for a twinbill. SARAH FOX — Agnes Scott College (So., SS, Cass HS).. finished 3-for-6 with a walk and scored two runs in a home doubleheader loss to Salem College Sunday. Fox was also 3-for-5 and scored a run Saturday as the Scotties dropped a pair of games at home to Pfeiffer University. Through the first nine games, Fox is hitting .524 with a .600 on-base percentage. She has three RBI and five stolen bases. ASC (2-8) hosts Mississippi University for Women Tuesday and makes the trip to Wesleyan College Friday. Both dates are doubleheaders. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (So., OF, Cartersville HS)… in a home, doubleheader split with Wingate University Saturday, Poston was 2-for-6 including a solo home run. Columbus State (7-8) will host Erskine College, Lynn University, and University of West Alabama Friday and Saturday in the Cougar Red-White-Blue Classic. HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… entered in the fifth inning Sunday and allowed a pair of earned runs on three hits and a walk in the Jayhawks’ 6-3 loss to host Texas A&M Sunday in the Reveille Classic. In the same event Saturday, Todd struck out the only batter she faced in the sixth inning in a 7-6 loss to the host Aggies. Kansas was 2-2 in the event with both wins coming over Southeastern Louisiana. Kansas (8-11) will host the Rock Chalk Challenge Friday through Sunday and will play Wichita State twice, Kansas City, and Drake twice. BASEBALL LEVI AYERS — Georgia Highlands CC (So., Cartersville HS)… doubled home three runs Wednesday in the Chargers’ 20-0 win over Point University JV. He also faced five batters while closing out the eighth and ninth innings Saturday in a 7-2 win over Sinclair CC (Ohio). He retired the final two outs of the seventh inning but allowed an earned run on two hits in Sunday’s 8-3 win over Sinclair CC. GHC (19-4) hosts a doubleheader with Grand Rapids CC Thursday afternoon at LakePoint. MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville)… struck out two and walked one in closing out the ninth innings for the 20th-ranked Tigers last Tuesday in a 10-0 win over Alabama A&M. Barnett also walked one and fanned two in closing out the ninth inning of Sunday’s 6-0 home win over Wright State. Auburn (10-3) has now won five straight and hosts Samford Tuesday night prior to a three-game series Friday through Sunday with Chicago State. BAILEY CAMPBELL — Young Harris College (Jr., 1B, Cass HS)… made a pinch hitting appearance and was hit by a pitch in Sunday’s 24-13 win at Francis Marion. The 33rd-ranked Mountain Lions (9-5, 3-3 Peach Belt Conference) host Tusculum Tuesday and will entertain UNC-Pembroke in a three-game series Friday through Sunday. JAKE COLLUM — Snead State CC (Fr., RHP, Cass HS)… worked the final inning and one-third Sunday and picked up the pitching victory as the Parsons came from behind to beat East Mississippi CC 5-3. Collum fanned three of the five batters he faced. Snead State (10-2) has won five straight has four conference games with Marion Military Institute this week — a doubleheader at home Thursday and a doubleheader at MMI Saturday. CLIFTON DEMPSEY — Toccoa Falls College (Sr., Inf., Cartersville HS)… in four games last week, Dempsey was 4-for-15, hit by a pitch, scored two runs, and stole a base. The Screamin’ Eagles lost to 22nd-ranked Middle Georgia State and won one of three at USC-Beaufort. Georgia College swept the three-game Peach Belt Conference series in Dahlonega to improve to 11-1 on the season and 7-1 in conference action. The Bobcats travel to USC-Aiken for a PBC three-game set Friday through Sunday. Martin, in his fourth start of the year, went five innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, three walks, and a hit batsman. He struck out six. Osborn allowed a hit, but retired the side facing only four batters as Point completed an Appalachian Athletic Conference three-game sweep of the Rams. DEVIN WARNER — Grayson CC (So., OF, Cartersville HS)… enjoyed a productive weekend series as the Vikings swept Carl Albert State (Oklahoma) in a three-game series. PRESTON WELCHEL — University of South Alabama (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… made a start as designated hitter Saturday and went 1-for-4 scoring one run in the Jaguars’ 13-3 loss to visiting Gonzaga. He also made unsuccessful pinch-hitting appearances Tuesday in a 5-0 win over New Orleans and in a 2-0 win Friday over Gonzaga. South Alabama (7-6) is scheduled to play at Alabama Tuesday and will play a three-game series at Arkansas Friday through Sunday. CAUY WILLIAMS — Wallace State-Dothan CC (So., RHP, Woodland HS)… faced the minimum and closed out the seventh inning on the mound Saturday as the Governors beat Pensacola State CC 12-4.
