The University of South Florida announced Monday the hiring of former Cartersville High School head coach Joey King as its new tight ends coach. King, who was the Hurricanes’ head coach will join the staff of Trevor Lawrence’s former co-offensive coordinator at Clemson — Jeff Scott. Scott, who will replaced former Bulls’ head coach Charlie Strong, was introduced as USF’s new head coach on December 11 and made the decision December 16 to not retain any of Strong’s assistants. “We are excited to have Joey join our staff,” Scott said. “I got to know him well during our recruitment of Trevor Lawrence at Clemson and he had great success coaching Trevor and leading Cartersville High School to a pair of state titles. He also brings great experience as former student-athlete and as an active member of the community off the field.” King went 67-4 in five seasons as Cartersville’s head coach, reaching four 4A state championship games and winning two. That success led him to Coastal Carolina, where he spent this season as the Chanticleers’ wide receivers coach. King is the fourth member of Scott’s first staff at South Florida, headlined by former Oklahoma State and Florida Atlantic defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer. A former South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award recipient and one of just two Division II student-athletes named to the AFCA Allstate Good Works Team while at Carson-Newman, King reached 50 wins faster than any coach in Georgia High School football history. During his five years at Cartersville, King was instrumental in the development of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who led Clemson to an undefeated record and College Football Playoff national championship in his true freshman season of 2018 and has them unbeaten and in the CFP again in 2019. King also served as the offensive coordinator in the 2019 edition of the annual US Army All-American Bowl. Prior to his tenure at Cartersville, King coached at Carrollton and Sonoraville high schools after beginning his coaching career at Jacksonville State University. A native of Cedartown, Ga., King earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Carson-Newman University in Tennessee in 2005 and a master's degree and education specialist degree from Jacksonville State. While at Carson-Newman, King played quarterback and was a member of three NCAA playoff teams and three South Atlantic Conference championship teams. King passed for 600 yards in his career with two touchdowns and tallied 424 yards and five career scores on the ground. He was a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and Carson-Newman Dean's List. King and his wife, Ashley, have three children Jay, Ty, and Jesse.

The Cass Lady Colonels rallied in the final period to defeat Dade County Saturday night and win the SouthCrest Bank Christmas Tournament in Chickamauga, 51-46. The Lady Wolverines led at each of the first three quarter stops. Dade led 14-9 after one quarter, 27-16 at halftime, and 38-33 through three periods. Cass outscored Dade County 18-8 in the fourth quarter for the comeback win. Londaisha Smith poured in 22 points to lead Cass. Claire Davis followed with nine. Ariana Hames and Keara McDaniel finished with eight each. Mikaela Jackson added six points with a pair of clutch three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Megan Schauer scored 13 for the Lady Wolverines. Tori Williams added ten for Dade County. Dade County falls to 9-3 on the season with their loss. Cass’ Davis was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 43, WOODLAND 22 The Cartersville Lady Canes utilized a productive third quarter Saturday night in The Storm Center to separate from the visiting Woodland Lady Cats and take a 43-22 non-region win. Cartersville outscored Woodland 16-4 in the fateful third quarter to pull away. The Lady Canes led 10-9 after one period and were ahead 16-12 at halftime. Lehla Thomas led Cartersville in scoring with 10 points. Jada Cunningham followed with eight points and four assists. Ariana Cochran also scored eight points for the Hurricanes. Jakoyah Draughn scored seven. Cio Seigler totaled four. Jimaya Moore had three. Kierra Milline scored two points and Zoe Casey added one. Jordan Thompson had eight points for Woodland. The Lady Cats will play Trion Friday at 4 p.m. CARTERSVILLE BOYS 76, WOODLAND 46 The Cartersville boys raced to an early lead Saturday night had 10 players in the scoring column as the Hurricanes cruised to a 76-46 non-region win over Woodland. The Canes led 20-6 after the first eight minutes and were ahead 45-24 at the intermission on their way to the 30-point victory. Kam Callahan (five assists, four steals) led Cartersville with 18 points. Micah Tart (seven rebounds, seven assists) and Kyler Johnson (11 rebounds, three steals, four assists) also reached double figures with 17 and 14, respectively. Jynerieus Stanley and Kolbe Benham scored six points each. Kason McLeod contributed five. Marquail Coaxum and Robert Novak (six rebounds, two blocked shots) finished with three points each. Jurnee Harns led Southeast Whitfield with 15 points. Lisette Gomez added 13 and Nancy Altamirano five in the Raiders’ win. A dominating defensive effort and balanced scoring propelled the Tigers who led 18-10 after one quarter, 30-14 at the intermission, and 50-21 through three quarters. T.J. Printup and Gaven Crunkleton paced the offense with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Jaxon Welchel followed with 10 points. Diego Perez had nine. STRATFORD ACADEMY 81, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 71 The Excel Christian boys took a 20-8 lead after one quarter in Macon Saturday afternoon, but a pair of injuries took their toll on the Eagles down the stretch in an 81-71 loss at Stratford Academy. The most significant of those injuries was the loss of Brendan Quillin who hurt his ankle in the second quarter and had to sit out the remainder of the game. Quillin had scored seven points at the time of his departure. Stratford narrowed the Eagles’ lead to 29-28 at halftime and then took control of the contest in the third quarter by outscoring ECA 26-9 in the period. Isaiah Josey and Ben Baxley led Stratford in scoring with 27 and 20 points, respectively, as they improved to 6-3 on the season. Excel was led by Rashard Doyal with 19 points. Rayshawn Womack was next with 17. Jakaden Barkley finished with 13 points and Kalil Holley added 12. In addition to Quillin’s seven, Jake Murray added three points for ECA. Excel slipped to 2-7 on the season and will return to action next Friday against Pickens at the Dragons’ Christmas Bash.

A junior wide receiver and defensive cornerback for the Hurricanes’ football team, Phillips finished the 2019 season with 52 receptions for 670 yards and eight touchdowns. The son of Derrick and Melissa Phillips, Sam carries an academic GPA of 3.6. “Sam is an outstanding student-athlete and a great leader in our football program,” said Canes’ head football coach Conor Foster. “He was our second leading receiver and led our team to a quarterfinal appearance.” The Adairsville High School Elite Athlete of the Month for December 2019 is Harper Powell. A junior on the Tigers’ swim team, Powell was the first to qualify for the GHSA State Championship Meet in an individual event this season. She swims the breaststroke leg on the girls medley relay team and is the anchor on the Lady Tigers’ 200 and 400 yard freestyle relay teams. “Harper is deliberate and unrelenting in her approach to the sport,” said Adairsville swim coach Shawn Williams. “She is not satisfied with her success and often requests feedback in hopes of improving her performance.” With plans to major in engineering in college, Powell is a 4.0 GPA student in Honors and A.P. classes. She is also dual enrolled with Georgia Highlands College. She is the daughter of Angela and Shawn Powell. ​​ The Cass High School December Elite Athlete of the Month is Londaisha Smith. A current junior, Smith has been a varsity player for the Cass girls basketbll team since her freshman year. The daughter of Chrystal Darden and London Smith, Londaisha is one of the team’s captains. Through the Colonels’ first ten games, Smith is averaging almost 17 points, six steals, nine rebounds, and three assists per game. “Londaisha has a passion and joy for the game,” noted Cass girls head coach Burt Jackson. “She is a positive role model for the younger players through constant encouragement. It is an honor and blessing to have her on the team.” Jordan Thompson is the December Elite Athlete of the Month for Woodland High School. The daughter of Amanda Bridgers, Thompson is a junior guard on the Lady Cats basketball team. “Jordan is our most complete player,” said Woodland head coach Kyle Morgan. “She is our primary ball handler and our best shooter. She is a selfless player who is willing to do whatever is necessary to give her team a chance to win — whether that be taking a charge, getting on the floor, or passing the ball to open teammates.” A two-year starter at point guard for the Lady Cats, Thompson is a Scholar Athlete Award winner carrying a 3.24 GPA. “Jordan is well liked and respected by both her peers and teachers at WHS,” Morgan continued. “I look forward to watching her continue to grow and mature — both as a young lady and a basketball player over the next two years. Her best basketball is still ahead of her.” Thompson plans to attend college and is seeking an opportunity to continue her playing career at the next level. Rayshawn Womack represents Excel Christian Academy as a December Elite Athlete of the Month. A senior swingman for the Eagles’ basketball team, Womack is averaging 24 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocked shots per game. “Rayshawn is one of the most dynamic leaders we’ve had in our program,” stated ECA head coach Shannon Boatfield. “He’s charismatic and intelligent with a servant’s heart.” Womack, the son of Lita Loveless, would like to earn a basketball scholarship and major in business management. He has a 2.9 GPA and has improved his academic numbers dramatically since arriving at Excel his sophomore year. “Rayshawn has more leadership ability in his pinky than most people do in their entire body,” Boatfield continued. “As he continues to harness his potential, he has seen his performance on and off the court be enhanced. The Cass Lady Colonels beat Pickens Friday night 91-66 in the semifinals of the Gordon Lee / Chattooga Christmas Tournament. Londaisha Smith scored 34 points and Claire Davis had 27 in the Cass victory. The Lady Colonels led 24-17 after one quarter and were ahead 44-29 at halftime. Cass led 72-48 after three quarters on their way to the 25-point win. Mykenzie Weaver and Sarah Morris led the ‘Nettes with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Rounding out the Cass scoring were Justice Bennett with eight points; Haley Johnson seven; Ariana Hames five; Taryn Callahan four; Amaya Ford three; Tatiana Christian two; and Keara McDaniel scored one point. Calhoun led 20-17 after one quarter and was up 33-27 at halftime. The Yellow Jackets led 54-47 heading into the final period. “We were down by two with six seconds remaining and shooting two free throws,” Canes coach Mike Tobin said Friday night after the game. “We made the first free throw and got two offensive rebound putbacks after the second shot was missed, but neither shot fell.” Gage Maffetone led Calhoun with 21 points. Caleb Boone and Jaylan Harris both scored 13 for the Yellow Jackets. Kolbe Benham led a balanced Cartersville scoring attack with 16 points. Lehla Thomas led the Lady Canes with a double-double that included 13 points and 11 rebounds. Naijah Evans scored 10 points. Cio Seigler followed with nine. The loss dropped Model to 5-9 on the season. Cartersville, who lost an earlier regular season game to Model, improved to 4-3. There was plenty of high school basketball action involving local teams Tuesday night. The Adairsville girls and boys basketball teams earned important Region 6-AAA victories at home, while the Woodland girls knocked off Pepperell for their second win of the season in a consolation game at the Rome Christmas Tournament. The Cass girls and boys suffered region losses at home to Villa Rica while the Cartersville girls dropped a holiday tournament semifinal game and the Excel Christian Academy boys lost in Atlanta to The Weber School. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 67, LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 59 The Adairsville boys trailed by three at halftime, but rallied in the second half Tuesday night at home to defeat Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 67-59 in a Region 6-AAA contest. LFO held a 14-11 lead after one quarter and was ahead 28-25 at the intermission. Adairsville took a 46-42 lead by the end of the third quarter by outscoring the Warriors 21-14 in the third quarter. The Tigers then held on for an eight-point region win. Gaven Crunkleton led all scorers in the game with 24 points. T.J. Printup (photo) followed with 16. Conner Crunkleton scored nine. Savaun Henderson posted seven points. Jaxon Welchel finished with six. Tucker Deams and Malachi Gardner rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with three and two points, respectively. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe (7-3, 4-2) was led by Jacob King’s 19 points. Brent Bowman and JaMicheal Davis added 15 and 11 points, respectively. Adairsville (4-5, 3-3) hosts Southeast Whitfield in non-region action Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 55, LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 54 The Lady Tigers picked up their first Region 6-AAA win of the season Tuesday night at home with a one-point win over Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe, 55-54. Adairsville trailed 14-4 after one quarter, but grabbed a 19-18 lead by halftime. The Lady Tigers led 31-28 after three quarters. Christina Collins led all scorers in the game with 36 points for the Lady Warriors. Adairsville was led by Haley Stiles with 14 points and Alexa Varner with 13. Lexie Childers finished with nine points for the Lady Tigers and Kaitlynn Stiles added six points. Adairsville (3-7, 1-5) steps out of region play Saturday hot host Southeast Whitfield at 6 p.m. WOODLAND GIRLS 39, PEPPERELL 33 The Woodland girls won for the second time this season Tuesday night in a consolation game at the Seven Hills Rotary / Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament at Georgia Highlands College. The Lady Cats (2-7) were led by Jordan Thompson with a game-high 13 points. Ansley Evens added eight points. Morgan Cooper and Lauren Morris contributed six points each for Woodland. Pepperell falls to 4-7 on the season with the loss. Woodland returns to action Saturday at Cartersville. THE WEBER SCHOOL 61, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 55 The Excel Christian Academy Eagles lost a tight contest with The Weber School Rams in Atlanta Tuesday night, 61-55. Logan Spector led the host Rams with 30 points, including eight, three-pointers as Weber improved to 5-2. ECA (2-6, 1-1) was paced by 22 points by Kalil Holley, 15 by Rayshawn Womack, and 12 by Jakaden Barkley. The Eagles play at Stratford Academy in Macon Saturday at 3 p.m. ROME 49, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 37 The Lady Canes took an early lead Tuesday night, but Rome regained the lead by halftime and held on to defeat Cartersville 49-37 in the semifinals of the Seven Hills Rotary / Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament at Georgia Highlands College. Cartersville led 14-8 after one quarter. Rome held leads of 31-25 at halftime and 44-34 after three quarters. Amberly Brown led Rome with 12 points. Justyce Moore followed with 10 for the Lady Wolves. Lehla Thomas paced Cartersville with 12 points. Ariana Cochran scored seven and Jamiya Moore added five points. Rome (10-0) advances to the tournament finals Thursday night at Berry College at 7 p.m. to face Darlington. The Lady Canes (3-3) play in the tournament’s third place game Thursday at 4 p.m. at Berry College and will face Model. VILLA RICA 57, CASS BOYS 53 The Cass boys had a five-game winning streak snapped Tuesday night at home with a 57-53 Region 7-AAAAA loss to Villa Rica. Cass led 23-20 at halftime and 40-33 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Colonels were outscored 24-13 down the stretch. Jai Ackey and Phillip Zachery led the visiting Wildcats with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Zaylan Chaney and Jordan Ford scored 14 points each for the Colonels. C.J. Pipkin followed with 10 points and Braxton Benham scored seven. Villa Rica improved to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in region play. Cass (9-4, 5-2) is off until after Christmas when the Colonels head to the KSA Tournament in Orlando December 27-30. Cass will open the event against Monsignor Farrell High School of New York. VILLA RICA 68, CASS GIRLS 45 The visiting Wildcats outscored Cass in each quarter and led 28-16 at halftime on their way to a 23-point Region 7-AAAAA win. Villa Rica, ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAA, improved to 9-2 on the season and 4-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass falls to 6-4 on the year and 3-4 in region action with their loss. The Lady Colonels will play Thursday through Saturday in the Gordon Lee Christmas Tournament. They will square off with Ridgeland in the first round Thursday at 4 p.m.

The Woodland boys basketball team picked up its second win of the season Monday night while both the Woodland girls and Cartersville boys suffered losses in holiday tournament action in Rome. WOODLAND BOYS 54, DARLINGTON 52 The Woodland boys won their opening round game of the Seven Hills Rotary / Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament Monday night at Berry College, edging Darlington in overtime 54-52. DiAnthony Heathcock (photo) led the way for the Wildcats with 23 points. Jamison Lawrence added 12 points for Woodland including four free throws in the overtime period. Darlington led 14-7 after one quarter before Woodland knotted the score at 22-all at halftime. The Tigers led again after three quarters 40-36 but the Wildcats caught them at the end of regulation, 48-48. Patrick Shelley led Darlington (3-6) with 23 points. Woodland (2-6) advances to Wednesday night’s semifinal round at Georgia Highlands College. The Wildcats will play Model at 8:30 p.m. MODEL 53, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 45 Playing just their second game of the season, the Cartersville boys dropped a first round tournament game Monday night to Model at Georgia Highlands College in the Seven Hills Rotary / Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament. Kam Callahan led Cartersville with 12 points, while Micah Tart and Kyler Johnson finished with nine points apiece. The Model boys improved to 6-3 on the season with their win and will now play Woodland Wednesday in the tournament semifinals. Cartersville (0-2) will play a consolation game Wednesday against Darlington at 7 p.m. at Georgia Highlands College. DARLINGTON 59, WOODLAND GIRLS 17 A stifling Darlington defense powered the Lady Tigers to a 59-17 opening round win over Woodland Monday night at Berry College in the Seven Hills Rotary / Rome News-Tribune Christmas Tournament. The trio of Emmaline Ratledge, Georgeanna Dempsey, and Caroline Dingler scored 14, 12, and 11 points, respectively, for Darlington in the win. Darlington held a 28-8 lead at halftime and improved to 10-1 on the season. Woodland got five points from Morgan Cooper and four by Abigail Taylor. The Lady Cats (1-7) play a consolation game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Georgia Highlands College against Pepperell. The Lady Dragons fell to Model Monday, 58-41.
