The Cass basketball teams swept home games over Paulding County Friday night with the Lady Colonels cruising to a 100-50 victory. The Colonels held on to defeat the Patriots 71-64. In other action involving local schools, both Adairsville teams dropped region contests at North Murray and the Woodland girls and boys fell at Rome. CASS GIRLS 100, PAULDING COUNTY 50 The Lady Colonels sprinted to a 30-6 lead after just one quarter Friday night and hit the century mark in a 100-50 home, Region 7-AAAAA win over Paulding County. Cass led 60-21 at halftime and 87-34 after three quarters. Claire Davis led four Lady Colonels in double-digit scoring with 27 points. Londaisha Smith posted 19 points while Ariana Hames and Haley Johnson tossed in 15 apiece. Amaya Ford finished with eight points. Mikaela Jackson and Justice Bennett scored six each. Ariana Hames, Keara McDaniel, and Taryn Callahan (who also dished out nine assists) totaled four points. Tatianna Christian contributed three points while Alexis Woods and Raziyah Ware added two points apiece. Bre’Nae Madiset led Paulding County with 20 points. Paulding County remains winless with the loss, falling to 0-6 for the season and 0-2 in region action. Cass (4-1, 1-1) hosts East Paulding Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. CASS BOYS 71, PAULDING COUNTY 64 The Colonels led at each quarter stop Friday night against visiting Paulding County, but utilized a nice third quarter surge to build a 12-point lead prior to holding off the Patriots in the final eight minutes for a seven point win. Cass led 18-15 after one quarter, 36-32 at the intermission, and built a 60-48 advantage leading into the final stanza. Zaylan Chaney led the Colonels with 24 points followed by C.J. Pipkin with 18. Zay Chaney scored seven; Ethan McIntyre and Jaquan Heard six each; Jordan Ford and Braxton Benham finished with five point apiece. Paulding County (6-2, 1-1) was led in scoring by Kervens Yacinthe with 26 points and Keon Sedgwick with 17. Cass (5-3, 1-1) will host East Paulding in another Region 7-AAAAA contest Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. NORTH MURRAY 65, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 40 The Lady Tigers trailed 17-3 after one quarter and never really made up the difference in a 65-40 Region 6-AAA loss Friday night at North Murray. The host Mountaineers led 30-21 at halftime and 50-30 after three quarters. Tenley Gladson and Karen Sinaloa led North Murray with 22 and 10 points, respectively. Auturm Henderson led Adairsville with 10 points. Lexie Childers finished with nine and Haley Stiles eight for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (1-4, 0-2) plays at Temple Saturday at 3 p.m. NORTH MURRAY 59, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 54 Gaven Crunkleton scored 22 points and Conner Crunkleton 11, but the Tigers fell to North Murray Friday night in Chatsworth. North Murray led 36-30 at halftime and maintained a six point lead after three quarters at 49-43. Adairsville challenged until the very end, but came up five points short. Chaison Buckner led the Mountaineers with 19 points. Ethan Lederer scored 12 for North Murray. T.J. Printup posted seven points. Malachi Gardner contributed five. Savaun Henderson finished with four points. Jaxon Welchel and William Longmore added three and two points, respectively. The win was the first of the year for North Murray (1-3, 1-0). Adairsville (2-2, 1-1) travels to Temple Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. start. ROME 57, WOODLAND GIRLS 20 The Rome Lady Wolves remained undefeated at 5-0 with a 37-point win Friday night over visiting Woodland. The Lady Cats (0-4, 0-3 Region 7-AAAAA) play at Paulding County next Tuesday night at 6 p.m. ROME 46, WOODLAND BOYS 38 The Wildcats slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAA with a 46-38 loss at Rome Friday night. Jaden Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Wildcats. DiAnthony Heathcock added five points and 14 rebounds. The host Wolves improved to 1-3 and 1-2 with their initial win of the season.

He serves as the team’s captain and leading player. “He is a hard working student athlete that embodies what it means to be a Woodland Wildcat,” said Wildcats’ head coach Jacob Selman. “He is someone who strives to be the best that he can be. He serves a pivotal role in leading the competitive spirit of our team and will continue as the key piece to our success this season.” Heathcock scored 17 and 22 points in the Wildcats’ two most recent games. He plans to go to college and continue his basketball career. He has been recruited by several schools and has recently received an offer from Johnson University. She is the daughter of Crystal Davidick and Chuck Smith. Smith is a senior and a captain of the Colonels’ swim team. She is a three-year letter award winner and excels in multiple competitive swim styles. “She is determined and always puts in the extra work necessary to perfect her swim techniques,” said Cass swim coach Danny Fairbanks. “She is a master of all four swim strokes utilized in competitions.” Smith is competing this season in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle as an individual. She is also part of the Lady Colonels’ 200 yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams. “She is a devoted team leader,” continued Fairbanks. “She diligently helps her teammates improve their skills as swimmers and always provides encouragement for them as valuable members on our team. Kaya truly leads by example. She ‘Loves Blue and Lives Gold’ in the tradition of a Cass Colonel.” Smith is an honor student and participates in the dual enrollment program with Georgia Highlands College. She intends to pursue a college degree in Biology and further pursue a Masters Degree in Biotechnology. Kaya states the most enjoyable thing about being a Captain of the Cass swim team is: “Spending time with her teammates and helping the younger swimmers learn and succeed in their swim techniques.” ​​ Tee Webb is the Elite Athlete of the Month for Cartersville High School for November 2019. The Hurricanes’ senior quarterback is the son of Tracy and Marion Webb. Webb, who has committed to play college football at the University of Louisville, finished his high school football career as the second leading passer in Cartersville High School history. He threw for more than 2,600 yards and completed over 60% of his passes during his senior season. “Tee is an outstanding student-athlete with a 3.3 GPA. Former Cartersville High, Auburn, and NFL running back, Ronnie Brown, will be inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame May 2, 2020. The 52nd annual induction banquet is set for the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel. The eight newly inductees increases the total number of inductees to 369. Born December 12, 1981 in Rome, Brown was a Class AA all-state running back in 1998 and 1999. He was also the Class AA Player of the Year in 1999 as the Canes went 15-0 under coach Frank Barden and defeated Hart County 27-21 for the state title. At Auburn, he finished seventh in school history in rushing yards and fifth in rushing touchdowns. He was the 2003 Citrus Bowl MVP and was drafted second overall by the Miami Dolphins in 2005. He was a starter at running back the first four weeks of his rookie season. In the 2008 NFL season, Brown had 916 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading to his Pro Bowl selection. In 2010, he started all 16 games with the Dolphins. He played six seasons with Miami and went on to play with the Philadelphia Eagles, San Diego Chargers and Houston Texans. He retired in 2014 with the Chargers. The Adairsville boys were the only local team to come away with a win Tuesday night in high school basketball action. The Tigers took down visiting Ringgold to improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in Region 6-AAA. The Adairsville girls, both Woodland teams, both Cass teams, and the Excel Christian boys all suffered losses. Adairsville boys 61, Ringgold 40 The Tigers led 13-7 after one quarter, 28-13 at the intermission, and 45-29 through three quarters on their way to a 21-point win. Excel (0-3) hosts Stratford Academy Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Kell 69, Cass boys 55 A rough second quarter for Cass saw the host Longhorns, currently ranked 4th in Class AAAAA, outscore the Colonels 21-5 Tuesday night as Kell won 69-55. The Longhorns led 19-15 after one quarter and extended their lead to 40-20 at halftime. Kell led 56-36 after three quarters. “We have a lot to clean up,” said Colonels head coach Sean Glaze. “We committed 23 turnovers tonight, but love our guys and know we will be better.” C.J. The Bartow County Parks and Recreation Department will have five teams playing in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) State Tournament this weekend. The two Bartow County U8 teams, U10 Girls, U12 Girls, and U12 Boys have all qualified for the GRPA State Tournament. The Bartow U8 Rogers team and the U8 Castro teams fell to Dalton I in district action, but will still advance to the state championship tournament. U8 Castro finished tied in regulation with Dalton I and remained tied through two overtime periods before falling in a penalty kick shootout, 4-3. U8 Rogers leads off with the host team Dalton II Friday at 6:15 pm at The Ronnie Nix Complex in Dalton. U8 Castro gets the winner of Friday's contest, Saturday at 12:30 pm at The Nix Complex. The U10 Girls finished as GRPA District 5 Runner-up and qualified for the state tournament. In District play Bartow U10 went 1-1, losing to Calhoun 6-1 and defeating Dalton 4-0. Bartow U10 Girls will play Saturday morning at 11:15 am at The Broddas/Durkan Complex in Dalton against District 6 Champion Walton County. The U12 Girls won their District 5 tournament by defeating Calhoun 3-0, and defeating Dalton 11-1. The U12 Boys won their District 5 tournament with a 7-1 win over Dalton, but fell to Rome 3-0. The Thanksgiving holiday week was not a week off for many of the college and pro athletes representing Bartow County on rosters across the nation. It was a busy week on the college and NFL gridirons as well as the college basketball hardwoods. Trevor Lawrence, a former quarterback at Cartersville High School, continued an impressive streak and set a new school record Saturday for Clemson as the 3rd-ranked Tigers cruised past rival South Carolina. Lawrence tied an Atlantic Coast Conference passing record in the process. NFL VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (5th yr. pro; OLB; Clemson; Adairsville HS)… contributed a pair of tackle assists in the Falcons’ 26-18 home loss to the New Orleans Saints Thanksgiving night. Beasley has 19 tackles and four sacks this season as Atlanta has struggled to a 3-9 record and is currently last in the NFL South Division. The Falcons host the Carolina Panthers Sunday at 1 p.m. COLLEGE FOOTBALL MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-Jr., QB, Adairsville HS)… was 6-for-11 passing for 86 yards including a 71-yard touchdown strike in the second quarter as the Huskies defeated Western Michigan 17-14 last Tuesday night. He also had 11 rushing attempts for 54 yards. Childers finished 2019 as the team’s second leading rusher with 419 yards with five touchdowns. He also threw for six touchdowns and 474 yards. Northern Illinois finished the season with a 5-7 mark. JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (So., PK, Cartersville HS)… made a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter and was successful on all four of his PAT kicks as the 49ers defeated Old Dominion Saturday in Norfolk, 38-22. Cruz also kicked off seven times for a 58.7 yard average with two touchbacks. Charlotte (7-5) is on a five-game winning streak and has accepted a bid to play Buffalo in the Bahamas Bowl December 20. KURTIS FEANNY — Lenoir-Rhyne University (So., OL, Woodland HS)… the Bears’ starting left guard was part of an offensive unit that produced 117 rushing yards and 200 yards passing in a 49-21 second round NCAA Division II playoff win Saturday over 25th-ranked Carson-Newman University. The 6th-ranked Bears will now host University of West Florida Saturday in Hickory, North Carolina in a national quarterfinal after UWF upset top-ranked Valdosta State this past weekend, 38-35. Ja’COREY JOHNS — Wake Forest University (R-Fr., DE, Cartersville HS)… made four tackles that included a sack in the Demon Deacons’ 39-30 overtime loss Saturday at Syracuse. Johns now has 51 tackles this season through 12 games including three sacks and a pair of quarterback hurries. Wake Forest (8-4, 4-4 ACC) has been most commonly projected for either the Belk Bowl in Charlotte vs. an SEC opponent or the Sun Bowl in El Paso vs. a Pac-12 opponent. MANNY JONES — Colorado State University (Jr., DE, Woodland HS)… was credited with five tackles including one sack but the Rams finished the 2019 campaign with a 31-24 home loss to 19th-ranked Boise State Friday night. Jones played in 11 games this season and was sixth on his team in tackles with 54. He had five sacks, five quarterback hurries, and forced two fumbles. The Rams season ends with a 4-8 record. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… completed 26-of-36 passes for 295 yards and three touchdowns Saturday in a 38-3 blowout of rival South Carolina. The three touchdown passes extended his streak of consecutive games with three touchdown passes to seven. He also rushed for a career best 66 yards and set a school record with 18 consecutive completions. The completed pass streak tied an ACC record. For the season, Lawrence is 216-for-315 passing for 2,870 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also has seven rushing touchdowns and 458 rushing yards. Third-ranked Clemson (12-0) will square off with Virginia in the ACC Championship Game Saturday night in Charlotte. JACOB POTTER — Kennesaw State University (So., LS, Adairsville HS)… made successful long snaps on all four of the Owls’ extra points and three punts as Kennesaw State won its opening round FCS playoff game at 11th-ranked Wofford, 28-21. KSU (11-2) travels to Ogden, Utah this Saturday for a second round matchup at Weber State. AVERY SHOWELL — Georgia Tech (R-So., DB, Cartersville HS)… made one solo tackle in the fourth quarter of the Yellow Jackets’ 52-7 home loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. Showell appeared in 11 games this season with one start. He finished the year with 16 tackles one pass breakup and one pass defended. Georgia Tech finished the season with a 3-9 record. JAKE WALKER — Furman University (Jr., TE, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS)… a starter Saturday, Walker was targeted on third down of the opening series but the pass fell incomplete. He was not targeted again in the Paladins’ 42-6 FCS playoff loss at Austin Peay. Walker appeared in all 13 games this season and caught two passes for 21 yards. Furman finished the year with an 8-5 record. VOLLEYBALL NEDU EVANS — Augusta University (Fr., MH, Cartersville HS) (Evans second from left, second row) ... the Jaguars won a second straight Peach Belt Conference tournament and learned their NCAA Southeast Regional assignment this past week. Augusta will be the No. 4 seed in the eight-team regional and will square off against USC-Aiken in the opening round this Saturday. The tournament is hosted by the regional’s top seed, Wingate University. BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — University of Kentucky (So., G, Cartersville, GA; Newton HS).. in a 69-58 home win Friday over UAB, Hagans dished out 12 assists while scoring nine points with three rebounds and two steals. The 11th-ranked Wildcats (6-1) host Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday. WHITNEY HARRIS — Toccoa Falls College (So., G, Woodland HS)… scored nine points and grabbed a pair of rebounds last Tuesday in a 70-45 home loss to Truett-McConnell. The Screaming Eagles (3-9) host Berry College Tuesday and Pfeiffer University Saturday. CARTER HEDDEN — Hocking CC (So., G, Cass HS)… scored two points with three steals, seven rebounds, and two assists in 14 minutes and a start during an 89-66 home win last Tuesday over Salem University JV. The Hawks (7-2) play at Ohio University Lancaster Wednesday and at Terra State Saturday afternoon. CORIANA McDANIEL — Andrew CC (Fr., G, Adairsville HS)… made her first college start, but had no stat line in a 77-62 loss at Enterprise State CC last Monday. JANA MORNING — Berry College (Jr., G, Cass HS)… recorded five rebounds, five steals, and four assists, but did not score in a 49-47 loss last Tuesday at LaGrange College. The Vikings (3-3) entertain Toccoa Falls Tuesday before traveling to Oglethorpe University in Atlanta Saturday. JOSIE SUMMERVILLE — North Park University (So., F, Adairsville HS)… scored six points and collected two rebounds as the Vikings stayed unbeaten with a 71-59 home win last Wednesday over St. Mary’s College (IN). North Park (5-0) plays at Carroll University Wednesday night and hosts North Central College Saturday evening. DARIUS THROWER — Truett-McConnell University (Sr., G, Excel Christian Academy)… scored five points with four rebounds, one assist, and one steal last Tuesday in a 69-63 win at Toccoa Falls College. The Adairsville girls and boys basketball teams made it a clean sweep Saturday at Southeast Whitfield with the Lady Tigers winning 49-43 and the Tigers taking a 63-36 decision in Dalton. The Lady Tigers earned their first win of the season in a battle that stayed close throughout. Adairsville trailed 11-10 after one quarter, but led 26-22 at halftime and 37-31 after three quarters before holding on for their six-point win. Lisette Gomez led the Lady Raiders (0-6) with 13 points. Alexa Varner had a game-high 14 points for the Lady Tigers. She was followed by Yatorrean Hale with nine; Ji’Leyah Mitchell and Haley Stiles with eight each; Autumn Henderson with four; Makayal Wade, Lexie Childers, and Kaitlynn Stiles with two points each. The Adairsville girls improved to 1-2 on the season. ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 63, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 36 The Tigers led 16-8 after one quarter, 31-17 at halftime, and 48-25 through three quarters on their way to a 27-point win. Jaxon Welchel and Gaven Crunkleton paced Adairsville in the scoring column with 13 and 11 points, respectively. T.J. Printup and Will Longmore followed with nine each. Malachi Gardner chipped in with six points. Savaun Henderson scored five. Jacob Silvers contributed four points while Connor Crunkleton, Johnathan Jarrett, and Courtney Slocum added two points apiece. Cal Rich led Southeast Whitfield with 14 points. C.J. The Cartersville girls held a first half lead Saturday at Model, but the host Blue Devils knocked down nine three-pointers and outscored Cartersville 42-19 in the second and third quarters combined to defeat the Lady Canes 65-56. Cartersville led 15-10 after the first eight minutes before Model took a four-point lead at halftime with a 19-point second quarter. The Blue Devils then extended their advantage to 52-34 after three quarters. Cartersville outscored Model 22-13 in the final period, but it wasn’t enough for the comeback. "We played well in the first and fourth quarters," said Cartersville head coach Cindy Moore. "Their (Model's) three-point shooting made the difference." Madison Harper and Montana Moats led Model with 20 points apiece. Brooke Roberts added eight for the Blue Devils. Lehla Thomas paced Cartersville with 20 points and seven rebounds. Arianna Cochran followed with 14 points. Cio Seigler scored six points. Naijah Evans was next with five. Lexi Henderson and Jada Cunningham contributed four points each. Jakaya Draughn scored two points and Kierra Milline added one. Model improved to 2-3 on the season with the win. Cartersville (1-1) hosts Pepperell Saturday at 12 noon at the Storm Center.

In a GHSA Class AAAA quarterfinal of unbeaten teams at Weinman Stadium, visiting Woodward Academy rallied from eleven points down in the fourth quarter Friday night for a 31-28 win over Cartersville. Down 28-17 heading to the final period, War Eagles’ quarterback Mike Wright found his brother Taco Wright in the back of the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown to narrow the Cartersville lead to 28-24 with 7:33 remaining. Later, after converting a fourth down pass for a first down to tight end Jacorrei Turner at the 13 yard line, Wright connected with D.A. Allen in the back of the end zone again with 1:01 left in the game for the winning score. Cartersville led 14-0 in the first quarter on a 63-yard touchdown pass from Tee Webb to Devonte Ross and a nine-yard Quante Jennings scoring run. Following an interception, Woodward Academy struck for a 53-yard touchdown pass from Wright to Turner with 3:29 left in the second quarter but a leaping interception and 35-yard return for a touchdown by Amarai Orr regained the Canes 14-point lead at 21-7 late in the half. Wright capped the opening drive of the second half for Woodward Academy with a 2-yard run to make the score 21-14, but a 35-yard touchdown reception by Sam Phillips from Webb gave the Hurricanes a 28-14 lead with just over seven minutes to go in the third quarter. Woodward’s James Mayfield made a 26-yard field goal with 3:20 left in the third quarter that narrowed the Cartersville lead to 28-17 with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter. Cartersville had 61 seconds at the end to seek one last score. The Canes made it to midfield quickly, but a sack of Webb put the Canes behind the chains and an eventual fourth-down pass was broken up with three seconds remaining. The Hurricanes finished the season with a 12-1 mark. Cartersville’s seniors, who were freshmen during the 2016 state championship season for the Canes, complete a career that includes a 52-3 record. Woodward Academy (13-0) advances to the Class AAAA semifinals next Friday to face Blessed Trinity in Roswell. Blessed Trinity beat West Laurens 31-0 in the quarterfinals. In other Class AAAA quarterfinal action, Sandy Creek defeated Madison County 41-7 and Oconee County topped Marist 16-7.

The Woodland girls and boys teams lost games to Lafayette and the Adairsville girls dropped a contest to host Gordon Central Tuesday night at the Gordon Central Thanksgiving Classic. LAFAYETTE 52, WOODLAND GIRLS 32 Woodland led 11-8 after one quarter and was tied 17-17 at halftime, but Lafayette pulled away in the second half for an eventual 20-point win. Mykeria Johnson and Marquila Howell scored 17 points each as Lafayette topped Woodland 52-32. Jordon Thompson and Morgan Cooper paced the Lady Cats with 10 points each. Carli Clymer scored seven. Ansley Evans added three and Gracie Styles two points. The Lady Ramblers improved to 3-0 with their victory. Woodland (0-2) opens Region 7-AAAAA play next Tuesday at East Paulding at 6 p.m. LAFAYETTE 57, WOODLAND BOYS 38 After winning their season opener Monday, the Woodland boys trailed at each quarter stop Tuesday night in a 57-38 loss to LaFayette at the Gordon Central Thanksgiving Classic. Asa Deal led the Ramblers with 22 points and Aidan Hadaway scored 19 points for LaFayette who improved to 2-0 on the season. DiAnthony Heathcock and K.J. Rogers led the Wildcats with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Woodland (1-1) opens Region 7-AAAAA action next Tuesday at East Paulding. GORDON CENTRAL 57, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 48 The Gordon Central girls got 18 points from Brooklyn Towe and 14 from Kim Passley in a 57-48 home win Tuesday night over Adairsville as part of the Warriors’ Thanksgiving Classic. Gordon Central (4-1) led 16-13 after one quarter, 34-22 at halftime, and 48-35 through three quarters before holding on for a nine-point win. Haley Stiles scored 13 points to lead Adairsville. She was followed by Makayla Wade with nine points. Lexie Childers and Autumn Henderson added eight each. Ji’Leyah Mitchell posted six points. Alexa Varner had three points and Yatorrean Hale added one point for the Tigers. Adairsville (0-2) travels to Southeast Whitfield Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip.
