Lainey Baker tossed a complete game shutout and struck out 15 as Woodland softball blanked Hiram Tuesday night in Paulding County, 6-0. Baker (photo) scattered only four hits and did not walk a batter. The Lady Cats scored single runs in the first and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead through four innings. Kendyl Hardin smacked a three-run home run in the fifth inning for a 5-0 lead and Woodland added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Hardin had a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give the Lady Cats an early lead. Bella Carnes reached on an error, stole a base, and later scored on another Hornets miscue in the third. Cassie Jones added an RBI single in the seventh. Morgan Bailey, Ansley Evans, and Morgan Cooper (double) had two hits each for Woodland. Hardin finished with four RBI. Jones (RBI) and Kailey Baker had the other Lady Cats base hits. The loss dropped Hiram to 7-14 overall and 7-8 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (14-10, 11-4) hosts Paulding County Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and closes out the regular season Friday at Lassiter. EAST PAULDING 12, CASS 4 The host Lady Raiders scored six runs in the first inning and raced to a 10-4 lead through three innings on their way to a 12-4 win over Cass in five innings. The Lady Colonels managed only two hits off East Paulding pitchers Maggie O’Kelley (2.1 IP, 4ER, 2H, 5BB) and Carson Brown (2.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 3K). Kylee Hembree (1 IP, 7R, 6ER, 7H, 2BB, 1K) started in the circle for Cass and suffered the pitching loss. Macenzie Dougharty (3.1 IP, 5ER, 5H, 2BB) worked into the fifth inning when the game was stopped for the GHSA run-rule. Kylie Manning had three hits including a double, home run, and three RBI. O’Kelley finished with three hits including a home run and five RBI. Ansley Hight (2 RBI) and Eryn Lee had the only Cass hits. Kelly Young and Haley Smith added RBIs. East Paulding improved to 16-9 overall and 13-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (11-14, 6-9) wraps up the regular season Thursday with their Senior Night game against region-leading Carrollton. COAHULLA CREEK 6, ADAIRSVILLE 1 The host Colts broke open a 1-1 game with a five-run sixth inning to defeat Adairsville Tuesday night, 6-1. Adairsville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Sadye Johnson doubled and came around to score on a Coahulla Creek error. The Colts tied the game in the third by taking advantage of a pair of walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a base hit by MiKayla Teems. In the fateful sixth, Coahulla Creek (12-6, 4-4) scored five runs on a double, three Lady Tigers errors, and a three-run home run by R.J. Janke. In addition to Johnson’s first inning hit, Alexa Varner doubled and Alyssa Jarrett added a base hit for the Tigers. Adairsville (6-13, 3-5) completes the regular season Wednesday with a home game against Cartersville.

Week Five of the local schedule for high school football arrives featuring a full slate of games with three of the four Bartow County schools hosting region games. Cartersville, Woodland, and Cass each host this Friday night with 7:30 p.m. kickoffs while Adairsville goes on the road to face a new Region 6-AAA favorite. CEDARTOWN BULLDOGS (1-3) at CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (4-0) The Purple Hurricanes are ranked No. 1 in Georgia and have now been in the Top Ten of the state polls for 71 consecutive weeks. Only Grayson has a longer streak at 73 weeks. With their 28-7 win last week over then-unbeaten Cherokee, the Canes have now outscored opponents 140-20 in the first four games. The Bulldogs cracked into the winning side of the ledger last week with a 57-14 win at Southeast Whitfield. Prior to last week’s victory, Coach O. Doyle Kelly’s Cedartown team had losses at Bremen, at Alexander, and at home against rival Rockmart. This is Kelly’s third season at the Bulldogs’ helm. He has a 16-11 record as head coach and guided Cedartown to the state playoffs in each of his first two seasons. Friday will mark the 50th meeting between the Bulldogs and Hurricanes in a series that dates back to 1912. Cartersville has won five of the last six including last year’s surprisingly close 21-20 victory at Cedartown. The Bulldogs’ last win in the series was an 18-10 score in Polk County in 2011. Cedartown leads the all-time series 25-21-3. Cartersville won five of the first six games between 1912 and 1918, but Cedartown was 14-2-2 between 1925 and 1971 as the two schools met sporadically. The series of occasional meetings continued in 1992 with Cartersville holding a 10-7 edge. The two teams meet again this week as Region 5-AAAA rivals. Woodland romped past the Raiders 35-7, but then lost on the road at East Hall, fell to Cass at home, and lost at Paulding County last week. Hiram has started slowly as well and comes into this game off a bye week. The Hornets opened with a 35-7 loss to Harrison and followed with a 28-22 loss at South Paulding before beating Paulding County two weeks ago, 28-15. Hornets head coach Pete Fominaya is in his second season as the top man at Hiram where he is 5-8. This is is first head coaching position. Woodland head coach Tony Plott, now in his fifth season at the helm, is 9-35 in his first head coaching job. Hiram leads the all-time series 5-4, but it may be the Wildcats’ turn to win. The series dates back to 2002, but due to some breaks and region assignments over the years this will be only the tenth meeting. In the first nine matchups, the home team has won each time. Hiram won last year 35-15. Woodland won in 2017, 21-10. On the scoreboard, North Murray hammered the Yellow Jackets, 31-7, but the lead was only 17-7 heading into the final three minutes. The Mountaineers scored a pair of touchdowns in that late game stretch. It was Calhoun’s first region game loss since 2001. North Murray started the season with a 38-17 loss at Rabun County, but has now reeled off three consecutive wins over Model (24-7) and Ringgold (45-17) at home prior to last week’s victory at Calhoun. Mountaineers’ head coach Preston Poag was a former quarterback at Dalton High School and N.C. State. He is now 48-34 overall in eight GHSA seasons. After serving as a Dalton assistant, he spent four years as head coach at Christian Heritage in Dalton where his teams made the state playoffs his final three seasons. The Lions were 24-20 between 2012 and 2015. Poag enters his fourth season guiding the Mountaineers and is 24-14 and has made the state playoffs each season. They appear to be well on their way to a fourth consecutive appearance. Adairsville dropped its opener at Chattooga 20-0, but bounce back with consecutive wins over Cass (14-7) and Coahulla Creek (35-0). Last week the Tigers were edged by Haralson County at home, 13-12. Adairsville head coach Eric Bishop is in the midst of his seventh season as the leader of the Tigers. His teams are 43-28 in that stretch and made the state playoffs in 2013-2015 and again in 2017. Friday will mark the seventh meeting between the Tigers and Mountaineers since 2012. Adairsville leads the all-time series 4-2, but North Murray has won each of the last two matchups. Adairsville’s last win in the series was a 47-14 win in Chatsworth in 2015 when the Tigers advanced all the way to the Class AAA quarterfinals and finished 11-2. Projections: CalPreps — North Murray by 18 Massey — North Murray by 21 Maxwell — North Murray by 21 ROME WOLVES (2-2, 1-1) at CASS COLONELS (3-1, 2-0) The Wolves started the year ranked either first or second in Class AAAAA depending on your poll of reference, but have now slipped down the rankings following losses to Marietta and Carrollton. The opening loss to the Blue Devils in the Corky Kell Classic was only surprising by the scoring put up by Marietta. Last week’s 24-20 loss at Carrollton likely means the Region 7-AAAAA race will look a little different this November. Between those two losses, Rome won twice at Barron Stadium. The Wolves overwhelmed North Clayton 63-6 and edged perrenial region contender Kell, 21-10. Meanwhile, Cass struggled to an opening night loss at Adairsville before reeling off three straight wins. The Colonels held off Class 7A Forsyth Central 15-7, beat Woodland 36-7, and topped Villa Rica last week 17-14. The Cass defense has been nothing short of solid through the first four games, but that unit will be severely challenged over the next two weeks as the Colonels host Rome and travel to Carrollton. The offense has improved in the past two outings posting 36 points at Woodland and found a productive rushing attack against Villa Rica. Rome head coach John Reid is in his fifth season with the Wolves after stints at East Paulding, Alcoa, Tennessee and William Blount, Tennessee. He is 51-9 at Rome with three region championships and two state titles. Overall, Reid is 125-41 in 14 seasons. Bobby Hughes is 65-78 in his 14th season as a head coach. This is his sixth season at the helm of the Colonels where he is 18-36 since 2014. He was previously a head coach at Howard in Bibb County and Macon County where his teams won a pair of region titles and made the state playoffs five straight seasons. Friday will be the tenth meeting in the all-time series led by Rome 9-1. The lone Cass win in the series that goes back to the 2008 season was a 24-21 home win in 2014 — Hughes’ first season as head coach at Cass. All three local high school softball teams picked up victories Monday night. Cartersville gained a non-region win at home over Darlington. Woodland and Cass collected region wins at home. CARTERSVILLE 10, DARLINGTON 2 Cartersville softball cruised to a 10-2 win Monday over visiting Darlington behind the combined, one-hit pitching of McKinley Chada and Ava Perkins. Chada tossed four innings allowing a pair of unearned runs on one hit and three walks. She fanned five. Perkins struck out the side in the fifth inning to close out the win. Hope Short had two hits and two RBI. Cio Seigler had two hits including a solo home run. Campbell Rogers had a triple and three RBI. AnnaKate McElhaney contributed a hit and one RBI. Madison Lingerfelt added one RBI. With the loss, Darlington remains winless on the season at 0-12. Cartersville (12-11, 6-6) wraps up its regular season slate Wednesday at Adairsville. WOODLAND 14, ROME 2 The Lady Cats overpowered visiting Rome Monday night 14-2 in four innings in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. Woodland scored eight times in the first inning to take an 8-1 lead. Rome posted another run in the third inning and the Lady Cats closed out the contest with a six-run fourth inning. Brianna Hill doubled twice and drove in two runs. Bella Carnes had an inside-the-park, two run home run. Kendyl Hardin doubled with two RBI. Kailey Baker contributed a hit and two RBI. Allyssa Motes (RBI), Hannah Miller (RBI), and Ansley Evans added one hit apiece. Hope Schultz (4 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB) picked up the pitching win for Woodland. The loss drops Rome to 2-19 overall and 1-14 in region play. Woodland (13-10, 10-4) travels to Hiram Tuesday and hosts Paulding County Thursday. Both region games are 5:55 p.m. starts. CASS 4, PAULDING COUNTY 1 Lady Colonels’ pitcher Kylee Hembree scattered six hits and four walks Monday night while limiting visiting Paulding County to a single run in a 4-1 Region 7-AAAAA victory. Cass scored single runs in the second and third innings to hold a 2-0 lead through four innings. The Lady Patriots scored their run in the fifth inning and Cass added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth for the 4-1 final score. Rachael Lee (double, RBI) and Haley Smith had two hits each for Cass. Eryn Lee drove in a run with a double. Alexis Woods also contributed a double to the offensive attack. Kaila Carson and Eryn Lee both stole a base. The loss drops Paulding County to 6-15 overall and 4-10 in region action. Cass (11-13, 6-8) closes out the region regular season against the top two teams in the region standings. The Bartow County Panthers youth program which participates in the Northwest Georgia Youth Football League completed a four-game sweep of games played Saturday at Woodland High School. This update also includes recent games played among local recreation department teams. 10U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 32, NORTH GEORGIA COWBOYS 0 Grayson Warmack scored three touchdowns Saturday as the 10U Bartow County Panthers shutout the North Georgia Cowboys 32-0 at Woodland High School in Northwest Georgia Youth Football League action. Warmack had touchdown runs of 40 and 10 yards and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Clay Hilburn. The 10U Panthers also scored on a 35-yard run by Jake Orton and a five-yard scoring run by Lawson Weeks. Weeks and Micah Pittman added extra point runs for the 32-point total. Note: Jorian Bailey had a pick-six interception return for a touchdown that was nullified for weight restriction advancement of the ball per league rules. In addition to the interception, Deon Winters and Clay Hilburn had fumble recoveries for the 10U Panthers’ defense. The loss drops the North Georgia Cowboys to 0-3 in league play. 10U Bartow improved to 3-0 and is currently tied with Rome and Wallace Park at the top of the D2 standings. The 10U Bartow County Panthers play at the Douglasville TigerCubs Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. 9U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 29, ROSS LONGHORNS 7 Four different Panthers found paydirt Saturday as the 9U Bartow County Panthers defeated previously unbeaten Ross Longhorns 29-7 at Woodland High School. Bartow opened the scoring in the second quarter and took a 7-0 lead to halftime on a touchdown run by Cooper Melvin and an extra point run by quarterback Trace Hawkins. Kaiden Kent scored on a third quarter run and Hawkins hit Lance Tippett on a two-point conversion pass to extend the Panthers’ lead to 15-0. ​​ In the fourth quarter, Chris McClendon added a scoring run and Bartow completed another two-point pass from Hawkins to Javious Davis. The acrobatic catch by Davis was hauled in by the diving receiver after the pass was tipped. The Panthers added a 48-yard touchdown run by Solomon James to take a 29-0 lead. The Longhorns scored their touchdown in the game’s waining moments. “Our offensive line was outstanding,” said Panthers’ coach Quintin Kent. “Buddy Lilly had a great game with three pancake blocks, but that group made a huge difference today and controlled the line of scrimmage in the second half.” Melvin finished with 54 yards rushing and added 23 receiving yards. The Panthers travel Saturday to Douglasville to face the Bill Arp Falcons at 10 a.m. 8U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 34, ROSS LONGHORNS 12 The 8U Bartow County Panthers evened their NWGYFL record at 2-2 Saturday at Woodland High School with a 34-12 victory over the visiting Ross Longhorns. Landon Smith had over 120 yards rushing and scored on touchdown runs of 45 and 50 yards. Anthony Moreno finished with approximately 80 rushing yards that included a 50-yard scoring jaunt. Gary Douglas contributed a 50-yard touchdown run and more than 80 yards rushing. Douglas also had three PAT runs, while Jaiden Taylor added a 30-yard touchdown scamper for the Panthers. Douglas paced the defensive effort for Bartow with 10 tackles. Taylor and Smith finished with five stops each while Joziah Upshaw, Moreno, and Karsin Darby added three tackles apiece. The loss kept Ross winless in league action at 0-4. The 8U Panthers travel to play the Chattanooga Ravens Saturday at 5 p.m. at Grace Baptist Academy in Chattanooga. 12U BARTOW COUNTY PANTHERS 34, WINSTON KNIGHTS 0 The 12U Bartow County Panthers won a battle of NWGYFL unbeatens Saturday at Woodland High School to take the top spot in the standings at 3-0. Five different Panthers scored touchdowns as Bartow blanked the Winston Knights, 34-0. Brodie McWhorter, Jacob Ellis, Treshaun Reed, Isaiah Livsey, and Xavier Parker each scored a touchdown for the locals. Meanwhile, the Bartow defense surrendered only six first downs and 105 total yards (76 rushing, 29 passing) as the Panthers rolled up over 300 yards on the ground and almost 100 through the air. “They (Knights) had not been scored upon in their first two league games and they moved the ball early, but our defense clamped down,” commented Panthers’ coach Josh McWhorter Sunday afternoon. “It was really a complete game by our Panthers. The offense started chewing up yardage and the clock. It was our offensive line unit’s best game of the year so far,” he concluded. Livsey finished with 101 yards rushing and a touchdown on 10 carries. Baylon Long followed with 88 rushing yards on 13 attempts. ​​ Jachai Delgado of the 12U Panthers contributed 57 yards on eight carries. He also added a pair of PAT runs. Cooper Reynolds scored on a pair of short quarterback keepers from 4 yards and 2 yards out and Zachary Stiles added a 22 yard touchdown run. The Major League Baseball schedule wrapped up its next-to-final week of the regular season; it was Week 3 of the NFL season; college football has hit full stride; and the college Fall schedules for cross country, volleyball, soccer, and golf are well underway. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Colorado Rockies (6th yr. pro; LHP; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… made relief appearances Friday and Sunday in a series at the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Friday, he was inserted in the fourth inning with the Rockies up 4-3 but no outs and two runners on base. Howard retired pitcher Clayton Kershaw on a sacrifice bunt and then was touched for back-to-back singles by Enrique Hernandez and Max Muncy as the Dodgers took a 5-4 lead. A.J. Pollack then hit a three-run home run, Cody Bellinger walked, and Howard was removed. He was charged with three earned runs. In Sunday’s appearance, he was inserted with two outs in the eighth, gave up a line drive single by Ian Desmond, and was removed in a 7-4 Dodgers win. In 17 MLB appearances this season, Howard is 1-0 with a 7.20 ERA in 15 innings pitched. He was the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes Pitcher of the Year with 42 appearances, a 4-1 record, and a 3.91 ERA in just over 50 innings pitched prior to rejoining the Rockies in September. Colorado is 67-89 with six games remaining. The Rockies close out the season with a three-game series at San Francisco Tuesday through Thursday and a three-game home set with Milwaukee this weekend. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (5th yr. pro; OLB/DE; Clemson; Adairsville HS)… made three tackles, two solo, and was credited with a half sack in the Falcons’ 27-24 loss Sunday at the Indianapolis Colts. College 4-2 in a non-conference match Wednesday night. Her first goal came in the eighth minute with a shot in the right corner of the net. Putzer’s insurance goal came off a rebound to put YHC up 4-1 in the 61st minute. She had one other shot in the first five minutes but it was wide. The Mountain Lions (1-4) travel to Flagler College Saturday afternoon for a Peach Belt Conference match. COURTNEY RHEA — Berry College (So., MF, Cartersville HS)… played 25 minutes at the beginning of the second half in the Vikings’ 3-0 loss at Covenant College last Tuesday night. Berry also played Bellhaven University to a 1-1 draw Saturday. Berry (5-2-1) plays at Sewanee Saturday afternoon to begin Southern Athletic Association conference action. RUSSELL SHEALY — University of Maryland (R-Fr., GK, Cartersville, GA, Darlington Academy)… made one save in a start and 87 minutes last Monday during a 1-0 win over Villanova. He then made two saves in a 3-1 Big Ten Conference loss at home Saturday to Northwestern. The 25th-ranked Terrapins (3-3, 0-1) host St. John’s Monday and travel to Wisconsin Friday night. GOLF LINDSEY BONNER — York College (Pa.) (So., Cartersville HS)… finished 17th overall and had the fourth best score for her team as the Spartans finished fourth in the 10-team, 36-hole Gettysburg Invitational in Abbottstown, Pennsylvania Saturday and Sunday. Bonner shot rounds of 84-85—169 on the Par-74, 5,830-yard Links at Spring Church in Apollo, Pennsylvania. The tournament was won by Carnegie Mellon. York plays Monday and Tuesday at the Bridgewater Fall Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College (Va.).

Participating in the Raider Ralley Invitational at Southeast Whitfield High School Saturday, the Adairsville volleyball team dropped four matches. The Lady Tigers fell to Dalton 25-12 and 25-10; lost to LaFayette 25-9 and 25-12; lost to Gilmer 25-15 and 25-14; and fell to Christian Heritage 25-8 and 25-18.

Over 130 cross country teams and clubs from the collegiate level to youth runners competed Friday and Saturday at Sam Smith Park in Cartersville in the Atlanta Track Club’s Wingfoot XC Classic. The meet also doubles as the Bartow County Cross Country Championship for the local high schools with the Woodland girls and the Cartersville boys capturing those titles. Woodland’s McKenna Trapheagen ran as an individual Friday night in the Girls Championship Division that included 25 teams and 187 runners. She placed sixth in 18:12 with Hannah Miniutti of Blessed Trinity winning the race in 17:54. Morgan Vaden of St. Pius X was just over two seconds behind to finish as runner-up. The Marist girls team won the Girls Championship Division by 27 points over rival St. Pius X. Auburn (AL) was third, Brentwood (TN) and South Forsyth rounded out the top five. The Cartersville boys were the only local squad to compete in the Boys Championship Division. The field included the top teams in the event with the Hurricanes placing 25th. Harrison won the title followed by Pope, Lambert, South Forsyth, and Walton. Justin Wachtel of Mary Persons won the individual title with a 5k time of 15:11. He beat Harrison’s Sully Shelton and North Hall’s Andrew Jones by two seconds. Junior Bill Archer led Cartersville with a 60th place individual finish in 16:35. Freshman teammate Sidney Stegall was less than a second behind (62nd, 16:36). The remainder of the Canes included sophomore Alex Rios (132nd, 17:26), sophomore Levi Booth (155th, 17:41), senior Max Florence (160th, 17:45), junior Colin McCann (163rd, 17:48), and junior Sam Peters (179th, 18:17). Saturday morning, the Woodland boys ran in the Varsity A Division and finished 11th of 31 teams and 255 individuals. Roswell won the division followed by Gainesville, Lovett, Wesleyan, and Hart County rounded out the top five. In the Varsity Girls B division with 115 competitors, Cartersville placed seventh as a team with Chattahooche winning the 17-team race. Cartersville finishers: Sophomore McKinsey Spinks (12th, 21:39), sophomore Trinity Atkins (27th, 22:45), junior Alice Terry (34th, 23:10), sophomore Jaxiry Betancourt (72nd, 24:57), junior Trista Kelly (79th, 25:17), senior Metzli Munoz (114th, 27:35), and junior Monica Ngugi (115th, 27:40). In other races, the Cartersville JV boys finished 19th in a 21-team race of mostly larger schools in the JV Boys A Division. Sophomore Bryce Richards had the JV Canes best time at 18:18. Matthew Wilson, Carson Gage, and Banks Wilson were all under 19 minutes. The Cartersville JV girls placed fourth of six teams in the JV Girls B Division. Samantha Herrera was the JV Lady Canes’ top competitor with a 12th place finish in 27:43. Kain Tanturri of Woodland Middle School and Ryan Johnson of Cartersville Middle School both finished in the top ten of the Youth Boys 3K race. Tanturri was sixth in 10:43 and Johnson was ninth in 10:59.

Cartersville extended its regular season win streak to 52 games Friday night with a win at Class AAAAAAA Cherokee and Cass football improved to 3-1 for the first time since 2016. Adairsville dropped a back-and-forth nail-biter with Haralson County and Woodland lost at Paulding County. CARTERSVILLE 28, CHEROKEE 7 Cartersville junior running back Quante’ Jennings (photo) had a pair of first half rushing touchdowns and Jadon Martin returned a Cherokee fumble 18 yards for a score as the Class AAAA No. 1-ranked Hurricanes grabbed a 21-0 lead in the first half. Jennings’ one-yard plunge gave Cartersville a 7-0 lead in the first quarter following the first of four PAT kicks by Oscar Hernandez. Jennings added a 12-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. The fumble returned by Martin was created on a big hit by defensive back Marquail Coaxum after a Warriors’ pass completion. Cherokee cut the Canes’ lead to 21-7 in the middle of the third quarter. The Warriors capped their drive with a one-yard dive by A.J. Swann. Cartersville’s final touchdown came later in the third quarter on a 65-yard pass from Tee Webb to Devonte Ross. It was the first loss of the year for the Warriors who slipped to 4-1. The Canes continued a 52-game, regular-season winning streak and improved to 4-0. Cartersville will open Region 5-AAAA play Friday at Weinman Stadium against visiting Cedartown. Kaleb Speights capped a Colonels’ 11-play, 46-yard drive with a 37-yard field goal with exactly 8:00 remaining in the period and fullback David Gbadie (photo v. FCHS, TCPics) swept right side out of a "wildcat, direct-snap" formation for a one-yard touchdown run with 1:16 left in the half. Speights added the PAT kick for a drive that went 76-yards on eight plays. Villa Rica controlled field position for most of the third quarter as the two teams traded punts, but Tanayce Calhoun broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run with 4:32 left in the third quarter. The four-play drive covered 86 yards with Speights again converting the PAT. Villa Rica’s dangerous tailback, Phillip Zachery, tore off runs of 32-yards, 17-yards, and 14-yards to set up the Wildcats first score. Quarterback Tristan Allen pushed the ball across on a one-yard keeper to make the score 17-7 following Jacob Antoine’s PAT kick. The drive covered 60 yards in six plays with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter. Following a Colonels’ three-and-out, Villa Rica made it 17-14 with 10 minutes left in the game. Allen connected on a 28-yard pass and Keenan Johnson raced around the left side for a 15-yard touchdown run for the big plays. The Wildcats’ scoring drive was 51-yards in five plays with a second Antoine kick. Another Cass three-and-out gave Villa Rica the first of two final shots for the comeback. A strong defensive stand left the Wildcats with a missed 37-yard field goal and the Colonels’ offense took a little time off the clock with their next possession. A Cass punt left Villa Rica deep in their own territory with no timeouts. After picking up one first down, the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs after a fourth down pass was knocked down. Cass quarterback Logan Nelson then took the victory formation snap twice and the Colonels had a 17-14 victory. Villa Rica drops to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (3-1, 2-0) has matched its best start since 2016 but will be severely challenged next week when they host Rome. HARALSON COUNTY 13, ADAIRSVILLE 12 The visiting Rebels took a 7-3 lead into the intermission after a defensive struggle in the first half. Adairsville got a 42-yard field goal off the foot of Emmanuel Lopez to take a 3-0 advantage with 7:13 remaining in the first quarter and the score stayed that way until Haralson County scored on an 11-yard run by Clay Hyatt with 4:34 left in the half. Adairsville took a 12-7 lead in the third quarter, scoring on a 29-yard field goal by Lopez and a 47-yard reverse play that resulted in a touchdown by TyShawn Savage. The Tigers’ PAT attempt following the touchdown failed leaving Adairsville with a 12-7 lead with 6:42 left in the third quarter. Haralson’s Marc Harris gave the Rebels the lead with 1:56 left in the game on a 3-yard touchdown run. A bad snap caused the PAT to fail but Haralson County held a 13-12 lead. While Harris scored to cap the drive, it was Hyatt who rushed for 54 yards during the scoring drive on eight plays. Adairsville got in position for a 43-yard field goal attempt with 0:38 remaining, but Haralson County partially blocked the attempt and held on for a 13-12 Region 6-AAA win. Tigers’ quarterback Conner Crunkelton was 13-of-20 passing for 175 yards. He also rushed for 23 yards. Courtney Slocum made five catches for 66 yards. Savage had two receptions for 46 yards and Derrick Simmons caught two passes for 22 yards. Ja’Maury Johnson contributed 33 yards rushing on 11 attempts and Savage had the 47-yard scoring run. Haralson County stays unbeaten at 3-0 and improves to 1-0 in region play. Adairsville (2-2, 1-1) travels to North Murray next Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. PAULDING COUNTY 44, WOODLAND 21 Woodland lost for the third straight week after a season-opening win. This time falling at the Paulding County Patriots in a Region 7-AAAAA contest 44-21. Demarcus Williams (photo) had touchdown runs of five, eight and 18 yards. He also ran for a two-point conversion for the Wildcats. Williams’ first score narrowed Paulding County’s lead to 16-8 after he also ran in the two-point conversion. His 18-yarder in the first minute of the fourth quarter made the score 37-14, and his eight yard scoring run came with just under four minutes remaining in the game to create the 44-21 final score. The Patriots took a 3-0 lead early on a Matthew Frey 36-yard field goal. Brayden Mauldin then connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass to Frantzyr Chardoavione that gave Paulding County a 10-0 lead. Mauldin and Keishon Jackson connected on the first of two touchdown passes for a 16-0 lead. The first was an 80-yarder. They added a 48-yarder that put the Patriots ahead 23-8. Christian Rowe had touchdown runs from 20 and 13 yards in the second half and Smael Mondon added a four yard plunge for the Patriots. Paulding County improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Patriots host Villa Rica next week. Woodland (1-3, 0-2) hosts Hiram this Friday for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Woodland softball scored four times in their first offensive frame Thursday night at Villa Rica and built a 6-3 lead through three innings before holding on to beat the host Wildcats 7-5 in Region 7-AAAAA action. Villa Rica scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Woodland lead to 6-5, but the Lady Cats added an insurance run in the sixth for their eventual two-run win. Lainey Baker (7 IP, 5ER, 12H, 3BB, 11K) struck out eleven in her complete-game win. Ansley Evans was the only Woodland player with two hits. Taylor Long of Sonoraville tossed a complete-game, two-hitter with a walk and 14 strikeouts. Adairsville’s Taylor Rhoades suffered the tough loss in the circle, allowing only one earned run on five hits. She struck out three. Taylor Long and Kinsley Long combined to drive in three of the runs for the Phoenix. Alexa Varner and Victoria O’Neal (double) had the only Lady Tigers hits. Sonoraville improved to 10-7 overall and 5-2 in region action. Adairsville (6-12, 3-4) travels to Coahulla Creek Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in their final region regular season game. HIRAM 11, CASS 1 Hiram completed a two-game, regular season sweep of Cass softball Thursday night at the Lady Colonels diamond with an 11-1 win. The visiting Hornets scored in each of the first four innings to take a commanding lead. Angel Felker was 3-for-4 for Hiram with a double and three RBI. The Lady Colonels scored their only run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Ansley Hight. She added a hit in the fourth. Rachael Lee had the other Cass hit leading off the fourth inning. Lee (2.2 IP, 9R, 4ER, 11H, 0BB, 2K) was the losing pitcher for Cass. Kylee Hembree (2.1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched for the Colonels. Hiram improved to 7-12 overall and 7-6 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (10-13, 5-8) hosts Paulding County Monday at 5:55 p.m.

Woodland volleyball defeated Rockmart and East Paulding Thursday night in Dallas. The Lady Cats rolled past Rockmart 25-15 and 25-8 and held on to edge the host Raiders on their senior night 25-22, 27-29, and 20-18. In the win over Rockmart, Grace Webb finished with four aces, three digs, four blocks, and a pair of kills. Sydney Molinaro totaled nine assists, seven kills, three aces, and two digs. Caroline Gore contributed five aces, five kills, and a dig. Lauren Morris added four digs, four assists, a pair of aces, and one kill. In the win over East Paulding, Stephanie Carrasco had four aces and four digs. Emily Cigainero had seven digs, two aces, and a kill. Webb finished with five blocks, four digs, four aces, and two kills. Molinaro contributed eight kills, five assists, seven digs, three blocks, and two aces. Gore had six kills, five digs, and four aces. Morris tossed in eight assists, nine digs, and three kills while Delaney Tuplin added four blocks. “East Paulding was really motivated due to their senior night,” said Woodland coach David Condon. “We played with a lot of effort the entire night and battled through some tough periods to find a way to win.” Woodland (17-14) plays at Model next Thursday. CASS SPLITS MATCHES AT PICKENS The Lady Colonels outlasted host Pickens in three sets Thursday night, but fell to Cedartown in straight sets.
