Adairsville pitcher Victoria O’Neal struck out eleven and tossed a complete-game three hitter Tuesday night as the Lady Tigers blanked visiting Murray County in a Region 6-AAA contest, 7-0. O’Neal (photo) also went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in a run, but it was Sadye Johnson’s 4-for-4 performance that included a pair of home runs, a double, and three RBI that highlighted the attack. Chloe Souders (RBI) and Alyssa Jarrett had the other Adairsville base hits. Megan Gregory and Olivia Talarico both drove in a run. The Lady Tigers (5-6, 2-1) travel to Haralson County Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. start. LADY COLONELS LOSE AT HIRAM ON EXTRA INNING, WALK-OFF HOMER With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Sydney Admonic hit a three run home run to center field as Hiram defeated visiting Cass 8-5 Tuesday night. The Lady Colonels held leads of 1-0 through two innings and 5-2 through six innings before Hiram tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with three hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly. Cass failed to score in their half of the eighth inning and Hiram set up the game-winning home run with a pair of one out singles by Dallas Hardy and Xyla Quagra. Admonick (8 IP, 5ER, 11H, 1BB, 5K) was the complete-game pitching winner for the Lady Hornets. Rachael Lee (7.2 IP, 8R, 6ER, 12H, 2BB, 1K) also went the distance in the circle, but suffered the loss. Megan Smith, Admonick, and Hardy combined for eight of Hiram’s hits including five doubles, a home run, and six RBI. Lee had three hits for Cass including a double and two RBI. Kylee Hembree finished with two hits including a double and one RBI. Haley Smith and Kimberly Allen contributed one hit and one RBI each. Ansley Hight doubled while Alexis Woods, Eryn Lee, and Kelly Young added one hit apiece. Hiram improved to 4-1 in Region 7-AAAAA and 4-6 overall with their win. VILLA RICA, WOODLAND POSTPONED The Villa Rica at Woodland region game was postponed until Wednesday due to wet field conditions. Villa Rica is 4-6 overall and 2-3 in region action. Woodland is 2-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Lady Cats also have games this week at Rome Thursday and at Cass Saturday morning.

Playing Tuesday evening at Coosa High School in Rome, the Cartersville volleyball team split a pair of non-region matches. Cartersville dropped their opener to Holy Innocents’ 25-16 and 25-12 but bounced back to beat the host Eagles 25-22 and 25-22. Macey Vaughn had 15 assists in the opening loss. Lauren Wenzell finished with six kills and a dozen digs. Anna Grace Brock added five kills and 10 digs. “We weren’t very sharp,” said Lady Canes head coach Dutch Cothran, “but we were coming off a pretty big break in the schedule. We had some good runs, but missed too many serves and made several blocking errors. They have a good team and I’m hoping to schedule them again next year.” In Cartersville’s win over Coosa, Vaughn distributed 24 assists while Mason Cline and Mia Nicklas provided three aces each. Wenzell contributed eight kills, eight digs, and a pair of aces. Brock finished with six kills and eight digs. “We trailed by at least six points in both sets,” said Cothran. “but battled back and kept our focus. It was good to come away with a win on their floor. Cartersville (7-7) will host Armuchee and Creekview Thursday night at the Storm Center starting at 5 p.m. The JV and ninth grade teams will also play Creekview. CASS SPLITS FIRST AREA MATCHES OF SEASON The Lady Colonels, playing in their first area matches of the year at Rome High School, defeated Hiram in straight sets but lost to Carrollton. Cass, led by senior Keegan Krause (photo) who had 14 straight serves for points in the second set, topped the Hornets 25-17 and 25-21. Carrollton won the nightcap, 25-14 and 25-11. The Lady Colonels travel to Pickens Thursday for non-area action. LADY TIGERS FALL IN HOME MATCHES Adairsville dropped a pair of non-region matches Tuesday night at home falling to Dade County and Fannin County. The narrow loss to Dade County was 25-23 and 25-22. Fannin County won 25-12 and 25-10. The Lady Tigers host Southeast Whitfield and Gordon Central Thursday starting at 5 p.m. WOODLAND STARTS AREA ACTION WITH LOSSES The Lady Cats' volleyball team opened Area 7-AAAAA play Tuesday night with a pair of losses. Woodland won the opening set against Paulding County 25-20, but dropped the next two sets to the Lady Patriots 25-13 and 16-14. In the second match, the Lady Cats also went three sets with East Paulding. The Raiders won the opening set 25-18, Woodland took the middle set 25-17, and East Paulding won the deciding set 15-8. "Too much inconsistency and lack of focus for us tonight," said Woodland head coach David Condon. "Those two factors plagued us all night." Woodland, along with Pepperell, travels to Chattooga for non-area matches Thursday evening starting at 5 p.m.

The Woodland Middle School boys cross country team won the 28th annual Ridge Ferry Invitational Saturday at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome and the Woodland Middle School girls team placed third in the 23 team competition. Kain Tanturri led the Wildcats with a first place individual finish among 122 runners in 11:45. He was followed by Landan McSwain (6th, 12:16), Zachary Wiggins (16th, 12:42), Will Parker (20th, 12:58), and Heath Tatum (21st, 13:00). The Woodland Middle School girls were paced by Olivia Berry with a fourth place individual finish among 129 runners in 16:51. She was followed by fellow Lady Cats Miranda Pelow (13th, 18:11), Autumn Lottner (16th, 18:13), Libby Morgan (26th, 19:00), and Megan Shultz (28th, 19:10). Red Top Middle School also competed in the invitational placing 13th among the boys teams and 18th in the girls race. Juan Mendoza (17th, 12:44) paced the Miners. This Friday night, the Cass Colonels open their 2019 football season by traveling just up the road to rival Adairsville in a continuation of the longest-running rivalry series in Bartow County. The series dates back to the 1956 season with Cass holding a 31-21-1 advantage in 53 games. While it is the season opener for the Colonels, Adairsville will enter the contest with a game under their belts. The Tigers dropped their season opener this past Friday night in Summerville to the Chattooga Indians, 20-0. Adairsville won the 2017 matchup with Cass 29-15, but the Colonels have won 11 of the most recent 14 games with a tie occurring in 2002. Cass won last year 19-10. The Tigers controlled the series in the 1970s, winning 9 of 10 games between 1971 and 1980. That came on the heels of a stretch where Cass won 10 of 11 games between 1962 and 1970. The two programs split the first six games between 1956 and 1961. This year’s game returns to the Tigers field on the campus of Adairsville High School. The 2019 minor league baseball schedules head into their final full week with four local players with community connections remaining active on MiLB rosters. Although Yankees' 2018 first round selection Anthony Seigler had his season cut short by injury with the Class A Charleston RiverDogs, Cartersville natives Elliott Anderson, Sam Howard, Connor Justus, and Luke Schiltz remain on active rosters. Anderson and the Burlington Royals along with Luke Schiltz and the Rookie Arizona League Rangers will head into post-season action with their respective teams. Anderson made three late inning relief appearances last week, but Schiltz has not seen action since August 15. Meanwhile, Sam Howard of the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes and Connor Justus of the Double-A Mobile BayBears will wrap up their minor league seasons Labor Day weekend. Howard, who made six appearances with the MLB Rockies earlier this summer, will be considered as a September call-up when big league rosters expand for the final month. ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Burlington Royals (1st yr. pro; LHP; Rookie Advanced Appalachian League; Kansas City Royals organization; Auburn; Cartersville HS)… made three appearances last week without allowing an earned run and moved his season ERA back under 1.00, but was tagged with his second loss of the season Thursday night at Danville. Anderson worked the eighth and ninth innings last Tuesday at home against the Greeneville Reds in a 2-0 loss. He allowed an unearned run on no hits or walks and struck out four. Thursday, he worked a scoreless ninth inning at Danville, but was the pitcher in the tenth inning when the Braves pulled out a 3-2 win. Anderson worked an inning and one-third yielding an unearned run on one hit and two walks. He struck out two. In a home 4-2 loss to Pulaski Saturday, he was called upon to retire the final two outs of the ninth inning. He gave up one hit and fanned one. For the season, Anderson is 2-2 in 18 relief appearances with three saves. He has an ERA of 0.98 with 32 strikeouts and 12 walks. Opponents have a .208 batting average against the left-hander. The Royals (37-28) trail the Pulaski Yankees by five games in the Appy League East Division and will play them in a best-of-three post season series that will begin Thursday. SAM HOWARD — Albuquerque Isotopes (6th yr. pro; LHP; Triple-A Pacific Coast League; Colorado Rockies organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS)… made a pair of appearances last week and picked up his third win and fourth hold of the season. At Sacramento last Monday, Anderson retired the third out of the eighth inning to be credited with a hold in the ‘Topes 4-1 win. He got a groundout from the only batter he faced. Last Thursday, Howard worked the eighth and ninth innings of an eventual 10-9 home win over the Fresno Grizzlies. He gave up three earned runs in the eighth on five hits that included a home run, but Albuquerque won the game in the bottom of the ninth to give Howard the win. He recorded two strikeouts. For the season with the Isotopes, the 26-year-old has appeared in 41 games (42.2 innings) and has one save with a 3.99 ERA. He has 61 strikeouts and 23 walks with a 1.47 WHIP. Albuquerque has been eliminated from post-season contention and their season closes September 2. At that point Howard — who has made six appearances with the MLB Rockies this season — will be a candidate for the expansion of the Colorado roster in September. CONNOR JUSTUS — Mobile BayBears (4th yr. pro; Infielder; Double-A Southern League; L.A. Angels organization; Georgia Tech; Cartersville HS)… started all seven games last week and was 3-for-21 at the plate including his 16th double of the season Wednesday against Chattanooga. He had two RBI and coaxed three walks for the week scoring six runs. For the season, the 24-year-old has a .190 batting average through 109 games and 327 official at-bats. HIs OBP is .294 with two homers, 23 RBI, seven stolen bases. Defensively, Justus has a .954 fielding percentage in 407 total chances. He has 76 games at shortstop, 19 at third base, and 14 at second base this season. Mobile (49-81) has been eliminated from qualifying for the Southern League’s post-season. The BayBears schedule concludes next Monday, September 2.

Woodland’s McKenna Trapheagen won the girls individual title and the Woodland girls and boys teams both placed third Saturday at the 28th annual Ridge Ferry Invitational 5K at Ridge Ferry Park in Rome. Trapheagen, who completed the course in 17:49.65, finished ahead of Makena Gates of Creekview (18:17.00), Gracie O’Neal of Gordon Lee (18:44.73), and teammate Rylee Evans (19:04.75) to capture the individual win in a field of over 225 runners. Trapheagen (shown in photo) led the entire race according to coach Rob Forbes and set a new school record in the process. The Lady Cats finished with 94 team points in the 30-team field, just behind team winner Etowah (56) and runner-up Creekview (77). Cherokee (152) and Sequoyah (170) rounded out the top five girls teams. Also scoring for the Woodland girls were Danielle Thayer (23rd, 21:39.28), Marlee Bowles (27th, 21:51.57), and Erica Boatner (39th, 22:09.65). The Cass girls were 29th led by Jessica Zukowsky (145th, 26:29.86). The other Lady Colonels included Ashton Johnson (155th, 27:14.66), Aislynn Leckwald (179th, 29:51.04), Anica Ayers (194th, 33:26.06), and Melanie Armstead (196th, 38:41.33). The boys team race was won by Creekview with 102 points. The Grizzlies finished ahead of runner-up Rome (117), Woodland (127), Cherokee (180), and Kennesaw Mountain (189) in the top five. Cass placed 23rd in the 33-team field. Josh Griffith of Fiedeles Christian School won the individual title in 16:23.99. Lane Hollis of Coahulla Creek (16:29.80) was second and Jordan Hellier of Model (16:43.70) placed third. Tyler Jones paced Woodland with a 13th place finish in 17:25.78. He was followed by fellow Wildcats Patrick Bollwerk (22nd, 17:40.84), John Forsyth (25th, 17:43.79), Dylan Stermer (26th, 17:44.38), and McKinley Chappell (41st, 18:08.53). It was a busy weekend for local high school softball teams as they all participated in the annual Allatoona Buccaneer Bash played at multiple locations across the area. Adairsville won twice; Cass won three of four games; and Cartersville took two of three games in Friday and Saturday action. TIGERS SNAP BRIEF SKID WITH PAIR OF WEEKEND WINS After dropping a third straight game Thursday night to Ringgold 4-1, Adairsville softball picked up a pair of wins Saturday in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Lady Tigers defeated East Paulding 5-4 and topped North Oconee 9-1. Adairsville took a 4-0 lead in the third inning against East Paulding, but the Raiders tied the score in the top of the fifth. The Tigers scored their go-ahead run in bottom of the fifth and held on for a one-run victory. LADY COLONELS WIN THREE OF FOUR OVER THE WEEKEND Playing in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash at Hamilton Crossing Park Friday and Saturday, the Cass Lady Colonels won three of four games. Cass had wins over Pickens 9-8 and Campbell 13-1 Friday night, before splitting two games on Saturday. Cass beat Coffee but lost 10-8 to North Oconee. The Lady Colonels used three different pitchers across the four games with Kylee Hembree picking up a pair of complete game wins over Campbell and Coffee before being tagged with a loss in relief work against North Oconee. For the weekend Hembree tossed 12 innings allowing 14 runs (11 earned) on 18 hits and five walks. She fanned nine. Rachael Lee (6 IP, 7ER, 15H, 0BB, 1K) earned the win in the circle Friday night in relief against Pickens. She also had a no decision start against North Oconee. Macenzie Dougharty (4 IP, 2ER, 6H, 2BB) started the Pickens game for the Colonels. Haley Smith had seven hits for the four-game weekend including a pair of doubles and four RBI. Eryn Lee had six hits that included a home run, a triple, three walks, and four RBI. CARTERSVILLE WINS TWO OF THREE IN BUCCANEER BASH Cartersville went 2-1 in three games Friday and Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park participating in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash. The Lady Canes beat Ridgeland 7-2 and East Paulding 12-3, but were blanked by Spalding, 3-0. Cio Seigler had a double, a triple, and one RBI in the win over the Ridgeland Panthers. Madison Lingerfelt contributed a hit, a sacrifice fly, and three RBI. Hope Short doubled while Lauren McElhaney and Elizabeth Nelson also added one hit each. Mikey Lewis finished with one RBI. Kiley Arnold (5 IP, 2R, 0ER, 1K) picked up the pitching win for the Lady Canes. In the win over East Paulding, Arnold (double, RBI) and Ava Perkins (RBI) had three hits each. Campbell Rogers contributed two hits and four RBI. Short had a home run in her two hits and three RBI. AnnaKate McElhaney had two RBI with a double. Lauren McElhaney and Nelson added one hit apiece. WOODLAND SUFFERS WEEKEND LOSSES IN BUC BASH Playing at Hiram in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash Friday, Woodland fell to Sprayberry 6-2. The Lady Cats then dropped two more games in the event Saturday at Lassiter — falling to Lowndes and Sequoyah. Morgan Cooper had two hits including a double and one RBI for the Lady Cats. Bella Carnes also added two hits. Ansley Evans, Kendyl Hardin, and Cassie Jones had the other Woodland base hits. Allyssa Motes drove in a run. Jones (5 IP, 6R, 2ER, 9H, 1BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for Woodland despite allowing only two earned runs. Saturday, the Lady Cats lost to Lowndes 8-5 and Sequoyah 4-1. Cassie Jones had two hits and two RBI in the loss to the Lowndes Vikings. Kailey Baker and Hardin also had two hits each. One of Baker’s hits was a double. Carnes walked twice with a hit and one RBI. Two of the three local teams in action Friday night came away with victories. Cartersville came-from-behind twice to defeat Allatoona 14-13 while Woodland raced to a big first half lead on their way to a 35-7 win over visiting Southeast Whitfield. Meanwhile, Adairsville suffered a shut out loss at Chattooga. CARTERSVILLE 14, ALLATOONA 13 Cartersville, ranked second in Class AAAA, came from behind twice Friday night to take a narrow 14-13 decision at Class AAAAAA 5th-ranked Allatoona. The host Buccaneers led 6-0 at halftime on a pair of Jude Kelley field goals. The all-state kicker connected from 54- and 43-yards although he missed from 49 in the opening half. An Allatoona punt had the Canes pinned at their own two yard line early in the third quarter when Quante Jennings exploded for a 98-yard touchdown run. An Oscar Hernandez PAT gave Cartersville their first lead at 7-6. Allatoona answered on the ensuing drive, punching in a score with a two-yard run to take a 13-7 lead into the fourth quarter. After the Bucs missed on a 47-yard field goal attempt, Cartersville had possession with just under six minutes remaining and cashed it in. Canes quarterback Tee Webb connected with Sam Phillips for a 59-yard touchdown and a 14-13 lead following another Hernandez kick. Allatoona had one last possession and was driving for a possible go-ahead score, but Devonte Ross stripped the ball from receiver Asante Das. Cartersville recovered the fumble and the Canes were able to run out the clock. Jennings finished with 171 rushing yards on 17 carries. Phillips had 97 receiving yards. Webb was 9-of-17 passing for 134 yards. Cartersville (1-0) is idle next week before hosting Luella September 6. WOODLAND 35, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 7 Junior quarterback Johnathan Thomas scored three touchdowns as Woodland blasted visiting Southeast Whitfield Friday night, 35-7. Thomas, who finished the night with 121 rushing yards on 13 carries, had scoring runs of eight and 28 yards in the first half as the Wildcats took a 29-7 lead at halftime. He added a 39-yard scamper in the fourth quarter for the only points by either team in the second half. Asa James scored first for Woodland on a 20-yard run midway through the first quarter. The scoring play capped a 10-play, 68-yard drive that made the score 7-0 following a Jordan Holbrook PAT. The first Thomas touchdown culminated an 82-yard drive by the Wildcats and a two-point conversion run by Demarcus Williams gave Woodland a 15-0 lead. Southeast Whitfield drove 67 yards on seven plays to narrow the Woodland lead to eight points. Adam Sowder connected with tight end Bryson Lofton to finish the drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass. Luis Laguna added the extra point kick for the Raiders. That would be as close as Southeast would get. Woodland answered with two quick scores to lead by 22 at halftime. James returned the ensuing kickoff to the Southeast Whitfield 39 yard line to set up a three-play scoring drive. Williams, who finished with 161 yards on 17 carries, went 30 yards on a third-and-one play to give the Wildcats a 21-7 lead. Thomas added his 28-yard scoring run to cap a five-play, 54-yard drive before the break. A two-point conversion pass from Williams to Blake Cash made the score 29-7 at halftime. CHATTOOGA 20, ADAIRSVILLE 0 The visiting Adairsville Tigers suffered a 20-0 loss Friday night at Chattooga to open the 2019 season. The Adairsville defense limited the Indians early, but Leshaun Lester got Chattooga on the scoreboard with 1:54 remaining in the first quarter on a 16 yard run. After a missed PAT, the Indians led 6-0 and that score would hold into the intermission. With Chattooga threatening just before the half, Adairsville’s Courtney Slocum had an important interception inside the ten yard line to keep the deficit at six points. In the second half, Lester added another touchdown run and a two-point conversion gave the Indians a 14-0 advantage. Devon Heroch scored the final touchdown for Chattooga six seconds into the final period for a 20-0 final. Adairsville (0-1) hosts Cass next Friday. It will be the season opener for the Colonels.

Trailing by seven runs going into their final frame Thursday night, the Lady Canes rallied for five runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate before coming up just short in a 10-8 Region 5-AAAA loss at Chapel Hill. The host Lady Panthers led 4-1 after four innings and 6-3 through six frames before posting four more runs in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead. Cartersville took advantage of three hits and four walks in the top of the seventh to challenge late, but the Panthers got out of the threat with a groundout. Lady Canes’ pitcher Ava Perkins (6 IP, 10R, 8ER, 12H, 1BB, 6K) went the distance and suffered the loss in the circle. Mikey Lewis (2 RBI) and Hope Short (RBI) paced the Cartersville offense with three hits each. Perkins and Elizabeth Nelson (RBI) followed with two hits apiece. Campbell Rogers (RBI), Lauren McElhaney, and AnnaKate McElhaney finished with one hit each. Kiley Arnold drove in a run with a seventh inning, bases loaded walk. Chapel Hill improved to 4-8 overall and 4-1 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (4-6, 3-4) will play three games in the Allatoona Buccaneer Bash Friday and Saturday at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Lady Canes play Ridgeland Friday at 5 p.m. and will face East Paulding and Spalding at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. CASS / WOODLAND POSTPONED Following two extended lightning delays, the Region 7-AAAAA softball matchup between Woodland and Cass was postponed. Woodland was ahead 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, but all stats from the game will be wiped clean and the two teams will start over on a to be determined date.

The Woodland volleyball team lost a pair of matches Thursday night at Allatoona, falling to the host Buccaneers and to McEachern — both in straight sets. Woodland’s Grace Webb had a kill and three blocks in the Lady Cats’ 25-4, 25-11 loss to Allatoona. “We played with low energy and without focus most of the night,” said Woodland head coach David Condon. “We found some rhythm and showed better effort and focus in the second set against McEachern, but it was too little, too late. Our habit of starting sluggishly and trying to fight back is detrimental against good teams. Both of these teams tonight at really good, especially Allatoona.” “We are going to have to work harder in practice,” added Condon. “We missed Emmalee Cigainero in our rotation tonight. She has been out sick. Her absence in not really an excuse for our lack of effort and focus, but it did hurt us as far as cohesiveness is concerned.” Lauren Morris had three aces, 15 assists, and a pair of digs in the Lady Cats’ 25-11, 25-22 loss to McEachern. Sydney Molinaro contributed nine kills, seven digs, and an ace. Webb added six kills, three blocks and an assist. ADAIRSVILLE DROPS NON-REGION MATCHES Adairsville volleyball lost a pair of home, non-region matches Thursday night falling to Gilmer County in straight sets before taking Chattooga to three sets. The Lady Tigers lost 25-16, 25-20 to Gilmer, then took the opening set against Chattooga 25-22 before falling 26-24 and 15-2 in the final two sets.
