In a pair of closely contested matches, the Adairsville girls and boys tennis teams split with Trion Wednesday at the Rome City Courts. The Lady Tigers won all three singles lines for a 3-2 victory, but the Tigers suffered a 3-2 loss with their wins coming at both Line 1 singles and doubles. They await their seeding position and their first round opponent for the region tournament that begins April 9 at Calhoun. The Adairsville boys are now 5-6 overall and 4-4 in Region 6-AAA. They will learn their seeding position and region tournament first round opponent by the end of the week.

Georgia Highlands softball swept a non-conference doubleheader Monday at Thomas University JV. The Chargers took the first game 11-4 and completed the sweep with a 9-4 win in Game 2. Kayla Phillips (7 IP, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 2K) tossed all seven innings in the first game for her third win of the year. She also completed the doubleheader with five hits and one RBI at the plate. Haley Robinson (5 IP, 3ER, 10H, 2BB) earned the Game 2 pitching win for the Chargers. Kara Kight (2 IP, 1H) worked the final two innings for her second save of the year. In addition to Phillips’ big day at the plate, Jazzmyn Shelton completed the doubleheader with four hits and a pair of stolen bases. Mya Adams had three hits that included a double and two RBI. Sydney McDonald also contributed three hits and a pair of RBI. Seven other Chargers contributed to the Chargers’ offense in the doubleheader. Deyonce Lewis (2 RBI), Emma McDonald (HR, double, 4RBI), Mallory Alford (double, 2RBI), and Alexis Davis (RBI) had two hits each. Sally Fairbank (double, RBI), Kayla Laukka (RBI), and Lexi Palazzo added one hit apiece. Georgia Highlands (15-13, 6-6) returns to Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association play Wednesday with a doubleheader at South Georgia State CC.

The Adairsville baseball team lost a Region 6-AAA game at home Tuesday night to Coahulla Creek, 11-0. The visiting Colts led 4-0 after two innings and were up 9-0 through five innings. They added their final two runs in the seventh inning. Adairsville had six hits in the game and loaded the bases in the third inning, but failed to push a run across. Four Coahulla Creek hitters — Drew Sage (3 RBI), Irvin Hernandez (2 RBI), Donovan Sims, and Kevin Castaneda — had two hits apiece. James Reece earned the pitching win for the Colts with four shutout innings and three strikeouts. Elijah Padgett (4 IP, 8R, 5ER, 7H, 2BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for Adairsville. Wade Conduff (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB, 2K) and Noah Simpson (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1K) also pitched in the Tigers’ defeat. Evan Henry had two hits for Adairsville. Conduff, Padgett, Logan Hunt, and Trace Still (double) had one hit each. Coahulla Creek improved to 5-8 overall and 4-2 in region play with their win. Adairsville (2-11, 1-6) travels to Murray County Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and plays at 7th-ranked Ringgold Friday.

The Cass High School soccer teams split region games with Paulding County Tuesday night at Cochran Stadium. The Colonels edged the Patriots 2-1 on goals by Slomi Orozco and Alex Cabanas. Orozco’s opening goal came on a penalty kick. Josh Flores assisted the Cabanas score. The Cass boys improved their season record to 4-8 and 2-5 in region play. Earlier, the Lady Colonels dropped a 3-2 decision to the Lady Patriots. Paulding County led 1-0 when Logan Vermaas scored in the 19th minute to tie the contest off an assist from Meli Reyes. The Lady Patriots scored again in the first half to take a 2-1 lead to the intermission. Cass evened the score again 10 minutes into the second half. Leidi Toribio found the back of the net off a feed from Vermaas, but Paulding County scored the game-winning goal in the 56th minute. The Cass girls are now 5-6-1 for the season with a 3-4 mark in Region 7-AAAAA. The Lady Colonels host Cedartown in a non-region game Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. Both Cass teams return to region play at Kell Friday with the girls game scheduled for 5:45 p.m. and the boys to follow.

Class AAAA second-ranked Cartersville broke open a scoreless game in the third inning Tuesday night by sending eleven men to the plate and scoring eight runs on their way to a five-inning, 12-1 region win at home over Central-Carroll. Two walks, four singles, a double, and a solo home run by J.P. Martin plated the Canes’ eight runs in the third. They then added four more runs in the fourth inning on three more walks, two hits, and an error. The visiting Lions (7-11, 0-4 5-AAAA) scored their only run in the top of the fourth inning on a walk, a Canes’ infield error, and an RBI single by Ross Helton. Cohen Wilbanks (5 IP, 1R, 0ER, 4H, 1BB, 2K) pitched all five innings for the Hurricanes to earn the win. Jordan Wilkie and Preston Welchel led the offense with two hits and three RBI each. One of the Welchel hits was a double. Mason Barnett doubled and had two RBI. Josh Davis added a hit and one RBI. Kolby Adams contributed a hit and Ian Inaba tossed in one RBI. Next, Cartersville (15-3, 4-0) plays a home-and-home region series with Troup County that starts Wednesday in LaGrange at 5:55 p.m. and concludes Friday at Richard Bell Field with a 5:55 p.m. first pitch.

The Georgia Highlands College baseball team fell behind early Tuesday and was not able to make up ground in a 9-5 conference loss to South Georgia State CC at LakePoint. The Chargers matched the Hawks with ten hits, but South Georgia scored eight runs across the first four innings to build an 8-3 advantage. GHC scored twice in the fifth inning to narrow the margin to 8-5, but South Georgia added an insurance run in the sixth inning before both teams went scoreless over the final three frames. South Georgia State starting pitcher Landon Nevill (6 IP, 5R, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 6K) picked up the pitching win. Caleb Crews (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) wrapped up the final three innings on the mound for the Hawks. David Meadows had three hits and one RBI to pace the South Georgia State offense. Blake Ebo added a pair of hits including a double and two RBI. Cole Escher drove in three runs for the Hawks. Chargers’ starting pitcher Zach Fordham (2 IP, 5ER, 5H, 4BB, 2K) was tagged with the loss. Ethan Underwood (1 IP, 2ER, 3H, 1K), Dalton Rhadans (5 IP, 2R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 3K), and Anthony Reneo (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) also pitched for Georgia Highlands. Keith Lyle had two hits including a double and one RBI for GHC. Parker Orr and Blake Brady also had two hits in the loss. South Georgia State CC improved to 16-16 overall and 6-7 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association with the win. Three Carrollton pitchers combined to blank Woodland Monday night in a Region 7-AAAAA contest, 4-0. Samuel Simpson, Colton Casper, and Eli Runyan combined to scatter four hits and two walks while recording 13 total strikeouts. Carrollton scored three runs in the top of the third inning and added an insurance run in the fifth for their victory. Ryan Anderson paced the Trojans at the plate with two hits including a double and two RBI. Grayson Udombon also had a pair of hits and added one RBI. Four other Carrollton players had one hit each. Dallas Adams had two of Woodland’s four hits. Koby Stansel and Scotty Smith added one hit apiece. Trent Porter (2.2 IP, 3R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 2K) started on the mound for the Wildcats and took the loss. Smith (4.1 IP, 1ER, 4H, 0BB, 3K) pitched in relief. The win completed a two-game series sweep for Carrollton (15-4, 6-2). The Trojans won last Thursday's matchup in Carrollton, 15-0. A pair of former Cartersville High School softball pitchers picked up their initial wins of the season this past week while MLB Spring Training begins to wrap up and a pair of local collegiate hitters remained hot at the plate. Former Lady Canes' hurlers Hannah Todd (Kansas University) and Annalyn Yantis (Samford University) both earned their first pitching wins of the 2019 season last week. In professional baseball, the Colorado Rockies made plans for Sam Howard to begin the 2019 season with the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes while middle infielder Connor Justus of the Los Angeles Angels organization winds down his career-best Cactus League season. Anderson retired the final two outs of the seventh inning Friday night with one strikeout and was credited with his fourth pitching win of the year. He started on the mound Sunday and worked two and two-thirds innings allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk. He received no decision and struck out two in a game the Tigers eventually lost 20-15. 12th-ranked Auburn (20-4, 4-2) plays Alabama Tuesday night in Montgomery and travels to South Carolina this weekend for a three-game series. MASON ROBINSON — Louisiana Tech (R-Sr., OF, Woodland HS)… went 7-for-15 this past week with a walk, a double, and four RBI as the Bulldogs won three of four games. Robinson raised his season batting average to .359 with three homers and 18 RBI. Louisiana Tech won two of three Conference USA games at Middle Tennessee over the weekend and also beat Mississippi Valley State last Tuesday. TRISTIN SMITH — Young Harris College (Sr., Inf., Adairsville HS)… has now hit safely in eight straight games and 14 of his last 16 games. On Saturday, she picked up her first win in relief tossing five and two-thirds shutout innings again in another 5-4 win over Wisconsin-Green Bay. It was her longest pitching stint of the season. Todd scattered three hits and two walks while fanning one of the 23 batters she faced. The Jayhawks were 3-1 for the week falling to Wichita State last Wednesday but sweeping three games with Green Bay. Kansas (11-20) opens Big 12 Conference play at home this weekend with a three-game series against Baylor. ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Sr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… picked up her first two pitching wins of the year in back-to-back complete game performances last week. Yantis collected her first win with a five inning 11-3 win over Tennessee Tech on Tuesday. She allowed three earned runs on five hits. She issued no walks and struck out two. Saturday, the right hander went all seven innings in a 5-2 victory at UNC-Greensboro. She allowed a pair of earned runs on six hits, four walks, and one hit batsman. Yantis fanned three. In a start on Sunday, she went three and one-third innings for a no-decision. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout as the Bulldogs beat UNCG, 7-4. Mosby (Erie Bayhawks, NBA G League; Cartersville) — The Bayhawks finished out their season with a trio of home wins this past week. Mosby saw 22 minutes in a victory over Maine, finishing with three points, four rebounds and five assists. He finished a team-best plus-19 in the win Wednesday. Two nights later, Mosby connected on all three of his shot attempts to finish with six points in 13 minutes, as Erie knocked off Windy City. In Saturday’s season finale against Westchester, Mosby saw just six minutes, scoring two points with two rebounds in a 123-122 double-overtime win. Elijah Robinson (Villa San Martin, Argentina; Excel Christian) — After coming off the bench in Villa San Martin’s previous two games, Robinson returned to the starting lineup this past week and returned to form in a pair of wins. Facing Deportivo Norte on Thursday, Robinson racked up 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists in an 89-87 victory. In Saturday’s 90-79 win over Opera TC, he contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. COLLEGE BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS (Kentucky Fr., Cartersville native) — Hagans and No. 2 seed Kentucky advanced to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament with wins over 15th-seeded Abilene Christian (79-44 on Thursday) and seventh-seeded Wofford (62-56 on Saturday) in Jacksonville, Florida. Hagans had a quiet game Thursday, posting four points and the same number of rebounds and assists. His contributions Saturday were key to helping the Wildcats overcome a tough Terriers team. Hagans finished with 12 points on 4-of-11 shooting with five rebounds and four assists. In the Sweet 16, Kentucky will face No. 3 seed Houston at 9:59 p.m. Friday in the Midwest Regional at Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. JAYLON PUGH (Furman Fr., Cartersville) — Furman dropped its NIT opening-round game to Wichita State by a 76-70 final score. Pugh did not feature in the game, which ended the Paladins’ historic season with a 25-8 record. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER (Ball State Sr., Cartersville native) — Gollhofer had another flawless weekend, but the Cardinals had to settle for a 1-1 finish, splitting their first two Mid-American Conference matches of the season. On Friday, Gollhofer and Isabelle Dohanics paired up for a 6-1 victory on Line 3 doubles. However, the other two Ball State lines lost, handing Western Michigan what proved to be the tie-breaking point. Even Gollhofer’s 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) Line 3 singles win couldn’t help the Cardinals avoid a 4-3 defeat. On Sunday, Ball State shut out Toledo, 7-0. Gollhofer produced a 6-3, 6-4 singles win. Her Line 2 doubles match with Dohanics was called after Ball State had won the other two lines to secure the point. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES (Albion So., Woodland) — Knowles put together a great all-around performance during Saturday’s meet at Indiana Wesleyan. He earned two second-place individual finishes (high jump and long jump) and also joined up with some teammates for a fifth-place showing in the 4x400 relay.

Georgia Highlands College softball split a Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at West Georgia Tech in Carrollton. West Georgia Tech won Saturday’s opener 4-3, but the Chargers took the second game 7-3. Former Cass standout Sierrah Gani had three hits including a home run, double, and two RBI for GHC in the opening loss. Kayla Laukka had two hits including a solo home run and Mya Adams also contributed two hits. Lexi Palazzo doubled and Deyonce Lewis added one hit and a stolen base in the Chargers’ defeat. Kara Kight (4 IP, 4ER, 10H, 2BB, 2K) was the losing pitcher for Georgia Highlands with Haley Robinson (2 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 3K) working the final two frames in the circle. In the Chargers’ 7-3 win, Gani, Palazzo, and Sydney McDonald finished with two hits each to lead the offense. Gani’s two hits included a double and two RBI. One of Palazzo’s hits was a solo home run while McDonalds’ hits included a double and one RBI. Laukka (2 RBI), Adams (RBI), Lewis, and Robinson had the other GHC base hits. Robinson (6 IP, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 1K) earned the pitching victory while Kight worked a spotless seventh to earn a save. West Georgia Tech stands 12-15 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Georgia Highlands (13-13, 5-5) plays at Thomas University JV Monday in a non-conference doubleheader and travels to South Georgia State CC for a conference doubleheader Wednesday.
