The Adairsville girls soccer team lost to eighth-ranked Lumpkin County Tuesday night at Tiger Valley to bring the Lady Tigers’ 2019 season to a close. Adairsville battled the visiting Indians well into the second half, but ultimately fell 4-1 in the first round game of the GHSA Class AAA state tournament. The Lady Tigers’ defensive backline and some solid goalkeeping by senior Havyn Isaac helped Adairsville reach intermission in a scoreless tie. Lumpkin County scored first in the second half to take a 1-0 lead, but sophomore Cat Wheeler scored her 28th gaol of the year to tie the game 1-1. The goal by Wheeler broke the Adairsville school record for goals by a sophomore. The Indians (12-6) kept up the pressure, however, and scored the final three goals of the contest to advance to the Round of 16. Adairsville finishes the season with a 10-5-1 mark, qualified for the state playoffs for a seventh consecutive season, and was Region 6-AAA runner-up.

Georgia Highlands’ baseball built a big lead Tuesday afternoon then held off a late rally by East Georgia for a 10-6 win at LakePoint Sporting Community in Emerson. The win also clinched a conference tournament berth for the Chargers with five conference games remaining. Tuesday, the Chargers scored in each of their first four offensive frames and held a 6-2 advantage through six innings. They then added four more runs in the seventh to lead 10-2. The visiting Bobcats threatened with four runs in the top of the ninth and had the bases loaded, when Chargers’ head coach Dash O’Neill inserted pitcher Dalton Rhadans. Rhadans got a groundout to end the threat and GHC had a four-run win in the first game of four this week with East Georgia. The Bobcats out hit the Chargers twelve to nine, but Georgia Highlands was able to convert more often. Ethan Underwood (8 IP, 5R, 4ER, 10H, 0BB, 5K) collected the pitching victory with a solid eight inning performance despite running into trouble in the ninth. Logan Ward (0.2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K) got the first two outs of the final inning and Rhadans (0.1 IP) needed only three pitches to close out the contest. East Georgia utilized five pitchers with starter Brandon Blume (4 IP, 6R, 5ER, 7H, 2BB, 1K) taking the loss. Jonathan Lueguering (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB), Jasper Dubberly (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K), Jared Dole (0.2 IP, 4R, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K), and Jacob Tate (1.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2K) also took the mound for the Bobcats. Rick Mitchell led East Georgia with four hits and one RBI. Indiana Stanley followed with three hits including a solo home run. Trenton Parker also homered for the Bobcats. Bryson Horne paced the Chargers with three hits including a double and four RBI. Hunter Moody had two hits including a double and one RBI. Trace Twardoski hit a solo home run while Skylar McPhee (RBI), Parker Orr, and Austin Foster (RBI) added one hit apiece. Malik Spratling drove in a GHC run with a groundout in the first inning. With the win, the third place Chargers pick up a game in the conference standings on second place East Georgia. Georgia Highlands (28-20, 14-11 GCAA) travels to Swainsboro Friday and Saturday for the final three games of the series at East Georgia (30-13, 17-7).

The Cartersville High School baseball team opens play in the GHSA Class AAAA State Playoffs Wednesday with a three-game series at home against Oconee County. Gani leads the GCAA with a .465 batting average through 41 games. She has 53 hits in 114 at bats with 40 RBI and 15 extra base hits. She was named All-Conference Second Team. GHC (24-16, 15-9) has already qualified for the four-team GCAA Championship Tournament, but has conference doubleheaders this week at home against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Tuesday and West Georgia Tech Saturday. SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Sr., C/Inf., Woodland HS)… went 5-for-18 including a double, a walk, and three RBI in five games last week. The Panthers split a doubleheader at Judson College (AL) in their final regular season games, before dropping their opening round best-of-three conference tournament series at Huntingdon College (AL). LaGrange won one of three games in the series and finished the year with a 16-17 record. Hodorff, who was honored by the USA South Athletic Conference as an All-Sportsmanship recipient, hit for a .271 batting average and hit three home runs with 19 RBI in 31 games her senior season. HANNAH KNAPP — Talladega College (Jr., C/UT, Adairsville HS)… was 0-for-4 in a pair of home games against Auburn University-Montgomery. The Tornadoes also had a pair of unreported home games with Judson College and close the regular season Tuesday at Hiwassee College. Talladega, an NAIA independent, is 4-26. PARIS POSTON — Columbus State University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… was 2-for-7 with two doubles and scored a run in a home doubleheader sweep last Tuesday of 23rd-ranked Georgia College. The Cougars (31-13, 11-3 Peach Belt Conference) are second in the league behind NCAA D-II 4th-ranked North Georgia and travel to Dahlonega Wednesday for a conference doubleheader. They then close out the regular season Friday and Saturday with PBC doubleheaders at home against UNC-Pembroke and Georgia Southwestern. The conference championship tournament will be May 3-4 at North Georgia. HANNAH TODD — Kansas University (So., P, Cartersville HS)… made two appearances at 16th-ranked Texas Tech last week in Big 12 Conference games. She was not eligible for a save Thursday but closed out the final inning of a 6-4 win. Todd faced seven batters and allowed only one earned run (three total) on five hits. COLLEGE BASEBALL ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Jr., LHP, Cartersville HS)… closed out the final four innings of Auburn’s 5-3 loss to Ole Miss Friday at home. He entered in the sixth inning with the Tigers trailing 3-2 and faced 18 batters. He allowed a pair of earned runs on four hits and two walks and fanned five. For the season, Anderson is 5-1 with a 3.16 ERA in 37 innings across 18 appearances. He has 41 strikeouts. 25th-ranked Auburn (26-14, 10-8 SEC) was 2-2 last week with a loss to 11th-ranked Georgia Tech and wins in two of three games of a conference series with 19th-ranked Ole Miss. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON -- Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; Argentine League; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)... led Villa San Martin in scoring in each of the team’s first two playoff games, finishing with 15 points apiece in both contests. He added 11 total rebounds and four combined assists across the two games. Villa San Martin won its postseason opener Friday against Obera TC by a 71-68 final before dropping Sunday’s Game 2 by an 83-75 margin. Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Wednesday. GOLF LINDSEY BONNER -- York College (So., Cartersville HS)... finished ninth individually in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament to help York win its first league title in only the program’s second year of existence. She shot her best round on Day 3 to push the Spartans past Christopher Newport, beating out the runner-up by a single stroke, 989 to 990. Bonner shot 87, 88 and 83 for a three-day total of 258 — one shot ahead of teammate Emma Harding for fourth on the team. Having placed between sixth and 10th overall, Bonner earned second-team all-CAC honors. Despite winning the conference title, York doesn’t receive automatic selection to the NCAA Division III tournament. However, the program could earn an at-large bid. The Spartans weren’t listed in the most recent rankings on the NCAA website from April 12, but Christoper Newport was No. 23. The tournament field will be announced May 6 ahead of the event, held May 14-17 at the Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston. TENNIS PEYTON GOLLHOFER -- Ball State University (Sr., (Cartersville, GA) Laurel Springs Academy)... While apparently battling a leg injury, Gollhofer had her toughest day of the year in Saturday’s Senior Day matchup against Akron. She came up short on Line 1 doubles, falling by a 6-3 score alongside Victoria Sec. In singles action, Gollhofer dropped a marathon Line 2 match. She overcame a first-set defeat but ultimately lost a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 decision, which allowed Akron to pull out a 4-3 win. Gollhofer will look to heal up ahead of this weekend’s Mid-American Conference tournament. Fourth-seeded Ball State will face No. 5 seed Toledo in the opening round Friday in Buffalo, New York. The Cardinals routed the Rockets 7-0 in the regular season. TRACK AND FIELD TREVOR KNOWLES -- Albion College (So., Woodland HS)... landed three top-four finishes in helping Albion finish second Friday in the Wittenburg Invitational. He placed third in both the long jump (6.49 meters) and triple jump (13.13 meters), while finishing fourth in the high jump (1.75 meters).

The Woodland girls and boys track and field teams finished in the upper half of teams scored at the Wolf Nation: Under the Lights meet held at Barron Stadium in Rome Friday night. For the local competitors, the event served as a tuneup for next week’s Region 7-AAAAA Championships to be held in the same stadium. It should also be noted that not all schools sent full teams to the competition. Rylee Evans won the girls 3200 meter race and Grace Webb took the girls high jump title to lead the Wildcats. Woodland also had five runner-up finishers. The Woodland girls placed fourth of eight teams with 53 points. Rome won the girls title with 170 points, followed by Pepperell (70) and Guntersville, AL (60). The Woodland boys finished fifth of ten teams collecting points. Cass had two athletes compete in the discuss throw with Ian Herman placing fourth with a distance of 114-07.5. The Cass baseball team wrapped up its 2019 season Friday night with a 10-5 loss at 8th-ranked Carrollton. The Colonels and Trojans traded runs early with Carrollton scoring four times in the bottom of the first and Cass responding with three in the next inning. Carrollton again extended their lead to 7-3 and Cass narrowed the margin to 7-5 in the fifth inning, but would get no closer. The Trojans utilized five different pitchers with starter Kannen Christian picking up the win. Zack Broome, Zeke McDonald, Chris Gaiter, and Ryan Anderson also pitched for Carrollton. Blaine Ingram had two hits in the Colonels’ loss. Bryson Markley had a double and finished with three RBI. Kyle Miller contributed a hit and two RBI while Jayden Smith added one hit. Cass starting pitcher Jordan Gani (2 IP, 6R, 4ER, 4H, 3BB, 2K) was tagged with the loss. Thomas Botts (4 IP, 4R, 2ER, 6H, 2BB, 5K) entered in the third inning and closed out the contest on the mound for the Colonels. The win for Carrollton was their ninth straight to finish the regular season 24-5. The Trojans finished 13-3 in Region 7-AAAAA and in a three-way tie at the top of the region standings with Kell and East Paulding. Cass finished the year 7-19 overall and was 3-13 in region play.

The Georgia Highlands College softball team secured a spot in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs with a doubleheader sweep of Andrew College Thursday at Stars Field in Cassville. The Chargers won the opener 12-5 before blanking the Tigers in the second game, 10-0. Kayla Laukka had a monster day at the plate going 4-for-6 with a home run, three doubles, and 10 RBI in the doubleheader. Deyonce Lewis also had a four-hit day and finished with two RBI for the Chargers. Mya Adams and Lexi Palazzo contributed three hits and one double each. Sierrah Gani, Jazzmyn Shelton, and Alexis Davis added two hits each in the doubleheader. Kara Kight (7 IP, 5R, 3ER, 10H, 3BB, 4K) was the winning pitcher in Game 1 and also homered in the game. Haley Robinson (5 IP, 0R, 6H, 0BB, 2K) earned the win in the circle in Game 2. The losses drop Andrew to 17-30 on the season and 7-17 in conference play. Due to impending weather, home games scheduled for Saturday have been moved to next Tuesday afternoon when Georgia Highlands (24-16, 15-9) will host Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Chargers will then conclude the regular season Saturday, April 27 at home with a conference doubleheader against West Georgia Tech. The GCAA conference tournament will include the top four teams in the conference and will be May 3 and 4 at Strong Rock Christian in Locust Grove.

The Cartersville girls tennis team defeated second round opponent Flowery Branch 3-1 Thursday at Dellinger Park to advance to the Class AAAA quarterfinals. The Lady Canes picked up a win from Emily Bush at Line 2 singles and won both doubles lines to secure the team victory. Lydia Wiedetz and Alice Terry closed out the match with their win at Line 1 doubles after Mia Shaw and Mason Cline took care of business at Line 2 doubles. Cartersville’s Line 1 singles stalwart, Ashley Popham (photo), was up a set and leading 4-1 in the second set when her match was pulled. The lone Flowery Branch win came at Line 3 singles. The Lady Canes will now face the Eastside/Richmond Academy winner next week in the Elite Eight.

The Cass girls soccer team finished their 2019 season Thursday evening with a 3-2 win at Coahulla Creek sending nine senior playoffs off with a win in their final game. Senior and University of North Georgia signee, Logan Vermaas scored her 21st goal of the year and added her seventh assist of the season. Maddie Shook scored her third goal of the season and contributed her 17th assist while senior Lupita Pineda added a goal and Leidi Toribio had one assist. The loss dropped Coahulla Creek’s season record to 12-4-2. The Lady Colonels finished the season with an 8-9-1 record and placed fifth in Region 7-AAAAA with a 4-4 mark. COAHULLA CREEK 9, CASS BOYS 1 Coming off back-to-back draws, the Colonels suffered a 9-1 loss in their final game of the season at Coahulla Creek. The lone Cass goal came off the foot of Magno Moreno off an assist from Alfred Chege. The host Colts improved to 14-3 with their victory. The Colonels’ season ends with a 3-11-3 record. CALHOUN 4, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 0 The Adairsville girls soccer team will head into the Class AAA state tournament as the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAA following a 4-0 loss Thursday night at Calhoun. The Yellow Jackets (11-3, 7-1) win the region title with Adairsville advancing as the region runner-up. The Lady Tigers will host the No. 3-seed from Region 8-AAA, Lumpkin County, Tuesday in Tiger Valley. CALHOUN 6, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 Calhoun scored three times in each half in a 6-0 win over Adairsville. Adairsville keepers Tyrek Bryant and Noah Grisham combined for 30 saves. Calhoun improved to 8-7-1. Adairsville finished 2-11. ALLATOONA 5, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2 Host Allatoona outscored the Lady Canes 3-0 in the second half for a non-region win Thursday evening, 5-2. “We played well against a tough opponent,” said Cartersville girls’ coach Chad Murray. “We just made a few mistakes that cost us.” Cartersville played the Lady Bucs to a 2-2 tie in the first half. Micah Vance scored an unassisted goal for Cartersville in the game’s 12th minute and Kendyl Anderson added the Hurricanes’ second goal in the 25th minute assisted by Abbey Craig. Class 6A Allatoona improved to 9-5-1 with their win. Cartersville (10-5-1) will host Oconee County in the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs next Thursday (April 25) in a 6 p.m. kickoff at Weinman Stadium. ALLATOONA 3, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 2 The Canes had a second half lead Thursday night, but a pair of goals by the host Buccaneers in the final twenty minutes lifted Allatoona to a 3-2 non-region win. Brady Craig had Cartersville’s first half goal to send the Hurricanes to the intermission tied 1-1. Pedro Ghanem found the back of the net early in the second half to give Cartersville a 2-1 advantage. The Buccaneers improved to 10-4 on the season. Cartersville (7-7) opens the Class AAAA state playoffs next Friday at 6 p.m. at home against Madison County (9-6-2).

A trio of Cartersville pitchers combined for a two-hitter and nine strikeouts Thursday evening as the Hurricanes won at Chapel Hill, 12-0. Logan Martin (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 5K, photo) started and improved to 6-0 on the year with a scoreless performance for three innings. J.P. Martin (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) and Reece Thompson (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 3K) pitched in relief to complete the shutout of the Panthers. Nine different Canes’ had one hit apiece. Jackson Norris and Peyton Willoughby both contributed doubles and finished with two RBI each. Chandler Tromza had a hit and a sacrifice fly to finish with a pair of RBI. Hank Smith (RBI), Noah Davis (RBI), Davis Williams (RBI), Thomas Murphy, and Hunter Payne had the other Cartersville base hits. Alan Thacker added one RBI with a sac fly. Chapel Hill finishes its season with a 6-16-1 record and was 2-10 in Region 5-AAAA. Third-ranked Cartersville (24-4, 11-1) had already secured the region championship and will host River Ridge Saturday at Richard Bell Field at 1 p.m. prior to hosting the first round of the Class AAAA state playoffs beginning next Wednesday. With Thursday's win, the Hurricanes also tied the school record for regular season wins and will now have a shot at breaking that record Saturday. The Canes’ state playoffs opening round opponent will be the No. 4 seed from Region 8-AAAA. That region still has games to play Friday. Cartersville’s opponent will be either Oconee County or St. Pius pending Friday’s outcomes. ADAIRSVILLE 8, MURRAY COUNTY 7 (8 innings) The Adairsville Tigers closed out the 2019 baseball season with an 8-7 come-from-behind, home region win Thursday over Muray County in eight innings. Adairsville’s Chase Horn singled home Logan Hunt with two outs for the walk-off win. The visiting Indians scored four runs in the top of the first inning and led 7-2 before the Tigers rallied for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to ultimately send the game to extra innings. The Tigers’ Levi Blackwell (3 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 5K) picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Noah Nation (5 IP, 6R, 2ER, 4H, 3BB, 3K). B.J. Roper had two hits including a triple and one RBI. Elijah Padgett also finished with two hits and drove in a run. Logan Hunt (triple, two RBI), Kyler Smith (RBI), Jacob Ray (RBI), Trace Still (double), Landon Ayers (double), and Wade Conduff had one hit each. Blackwell drove in a run with a sac fly. Murray County finished the year 2-23. Adairsville finished the season with a 6-15 record. KELL 12, WOODLAND 0 Third-ranked Kell rolled up ten runs in the first two innings Thursday evening a cruised to a 12-0, five inning victory over visiting Woodland. Longhorns’ starting pitcher Noah Dawkins limited the Wildcats to only two hits and two walks in a complete-game effort. He struck out three. Jay Inglis had a pair of doubles and drove in a run. Rylie O’Brien also had two hits including a solo home run in the fourth inning to help pace the Longhorns’ attack. Dallas Adams had a first inning single for Woodland and Scotty Smith singled in the second. Bailey Ward (1.1 IP, 9ER, 4H, 2BB, 3K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Ben Ammons (2.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 3H, 1BB, 3K) finished the game on the mound for the Wildcats after entering in the second inning. Kell improved to 21-6 overall and finished the Region 7-AAAAA slate with a 13-3 mark. Woodland wraps up the season with an 11-15 overall record. The Wildcats were 7-9 and fifth in the region.
