London Shaw set a new discus throw school record as Cartersville High School's track and field teams both finished second Thursday in a three-way meet with Dalton and Pickens at Weinman Stadium. The meet was only partially completed with rain moving into area during the competition. Coach Matt Terry said about two-thirds of the events were completed. Woodland also had pole vaulters to compete, but the Lady Cats and Wildcats not field full teams. London Shaw (photo) set a new Cartersville school record with a 117 foot, nine inch discus throw. The 25-year old record had stood since 1994. Of the events completed, the Dalton girls finished with 157 points. Cartersville was next with 116 and Pickens totaled 64 points. The Dalton boys scored 179.5 points followed by Cartersville (155) and Pickens (79.5). The Adairsville Lady Tigers soccer team blanked Coahulla Creek 3-0 Thursday night in Region 6-AAA action. Cat Wheeler scored a pair of first half goals. The first off an assist from Kaylee Jordan and the second on a corner kick by Megan Hardin that Wheeler sent home with a header. In the second half, Hannah DeBoard scored the Lady Tigers’ third goal assisted by Hardin’s free kick. Havyn Isaac made 12 saves in goal to preserve the shutout. Coahulla Creek slipped to 1-1-1 overall and 0-1 in region games. The Adairsville girls (6-2, 4-0) will host North Murray Tuesday.

The Woodland High School tennis teams dropped matches at Kell Thursday afternoon to the host Longhorns. The Lady Cats lost 4-1 and the Wildcats fell 3-2. At the time of the suspension, the Lady Tigers and Lady Colts were knotted at two matches each. The Coahulla Creek boys were leading two matches to one. The date for conclusion of the match has not been determined.

Three Cartersville pitchers combined to shutout Class 6A Alexander Thursday afternoon at Richard Bell Field and the bats provided enough offense as the Class 4A 2nd-ranked Hurricanes won a non-region contest, 3-0. Starting pitcher Mason Barnett (4 IP, 0R, 1H, 2BB, 2K) and reliever Cohen Wilbanks (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 1K) turned the mound over to closer Gage Morris (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) in the seventh as the Canes offense posted a single run in the third inning and two more in the sixth. Barnett was credited with the pitching win. Morris earned a save. Jordan Wilkie had two hits for Cartersville including a double. Ian Inaba (photo) contributed a hit and two RBIs. Preston Welchel had a double and one RBI and Alan Thacker doubled. Luke Townsend had two of the Cougars three hits. The loss for Alexander (10-2) snapped a 10-game winning streak. Cartersville (10-3) is scheduled to play Sonoraville Saturday at the Rome Braves’ State Mutual Stadium in Rome at 10 a.m. WOODLAND 7, HIRAM 2 Hiram scored twice in the home half of the first inning Thursday evening, but Woodland followed with seven unanswered runs which was plenty for Wildcats’ pitcher Ben Ammons to defeat the Hornets 7-2 in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. Marco Haro hit a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead and Koby Stansel — who finished with two hits — hit a solo shot in the fifth to give Woodland a 5-2 advantage. Scotty Smith finished with two hits including a double and two RBIs. Dallas Adams also had two hits for the Wildcats. Fisher Davis added a hit and one RBI. Bailey Ward contributed a double and Peyton Posey had the other Woodland base hit. Ammons (photo) tossed a complete game for the Wildcats' victory scattering nine hits and a hit batsman. He did not issue a walk and fanned six. With the loss, the Hornets (0-10, 0-6) remained winless on the season. Woodland (5-8, 3-3) opens a home-and-home region series at Cass on Monday.

The Cass girls tennis team defeated Paulding County 4-1 Wednesday, but the boys squad fell by a 3-2 score to the Patriots. Line 1 singles player Emily Surcey (photo) won 6-0, 6-0 to lead the Lady Colonels to a singles sweep of the Lady Patriots. Payton Tatusko won at Line 2, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 and Emma Wickenheiser won her match at Line 3, 6-0, 6-2. McKenley King and Carli Rediger took Line 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-3.

Woodland baseball built a lead with a five-run third inning Wednesday night and held on for a 9-4 Region 7-AAAAA victory at home over Hiram. The Wildcats went up 6-1 in the third frame and added on two runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth inning to build a 9-1 advantage. The Hornets scored a run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Woodland lead. Rome pitcher Alden Astin tossed a complete-game two-hitter Wednesday evening and the Wolves blanked Cass 3-0 at LakePoint in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. Astin needed only 81 pitches, walked two, and struck out seven in his win. Clay Means and Thomas Botts managed the only Cass base hits — both singles. The Wolves (6-4, 3-2) scored a run in the second inning and added two more in the fourth and managed only five hits themselves. Astin tripled and drove in a run. Brayer Cowan and Caleb Ellard had the other Rome RBIs. Logan Nelson (6 IP, 3ER, 5H, 2BB, 4K) went the distance on the mound for the Colonels in the loss. Cass (7-6, 3-2) will host Rome in the conclusion of the home-and-home series Friday at 5:55 p.m.

Ten local high school senior basketball players will participate Thursday night in the 5th annual Northwest Georgia Tip-Off Club Senior All-Star Games at Georgia Highlands College in Rome. Twenty-four senior girls and twenty-four senior boys were chosen from 26 different schools in the area to participate in the event. In the girls game, Cass will be represented by Amber Brittian, Sharia Wade, Payton Stoddard, and Alexis Ware on a team coached by Lady Colonels’ head coach Burt Jackson. Nakiyah Washington will represent Adairsville on the team and Woodland will be represented by Madgie Robinson. Four local players were selected to play in the boys contest. Cartersville’s Perignon Dyer and Isaac Gridley, along with Hunter Johnson of Woodland and Jacquez Fountain of Cass.
