Former Cartersville High quarterback Trevor Lawrence had another impressive performance for the Clemson Tigers as they routed Florida State in Tallahassee. He also broke a freshman passing record. Former Adairsville quarterback Marcus Childers had another impressive week as well. He helped lead Northern Illinois to an upset at Brigham Young and scored the game's only touchdown in Saturday's college football action. Meanwhile, Kingston senior Spencer Fields helped lead his 25th-ranked Rhodes College cross country team to a fourth consecutive conference championship in Memphis. Childers was 10-for-21 passing for 115 yards in the game. He also rushed 13 times for 19 net yards during the defensive battle. Northern Illinois (5-3) returns to Mid-American Conference action Thursday night at University of Akron. XAVIOR COAXUM — LaGrange College (So., DB, Cartersville HS)… had six tackles and broke up a pass Saturday, but the Panthers lost at Brevard College (NC) 38-34. Coaxum is fifth on the team this season with 28 total tackles. He also has 1.5 tackles for loss and an interception in the first eight games. LaGrange (2-6, 1-4 USA South Athletic Conference) entertains Methodist University this Saturday afternoon. JONATHAN CRUZ — UNC-Charlotte (Fr., PK, Cartersville HS)… made a pair of second half field goals and coverted both PAT attempts as the 49ers evened their season record and beat Southern Miss at home Saturday, 20-17. The third quarter field goal was from 40 yards and made the score 17-0 at the time. The fourth quarter field goal was from 39 yards with 4:19 remaining to give the 49ers a 20-10 advantage. Three of his kickoffs went for touchbacks and the two returns were for only 16 yards combined. For the season, Cruz is 12-for-17 on field goal attempts including a long kick of 54 yards. 23 of his 38 kickoffs have been for touchbacks. Charlotte (4-4, 3-2 Conference USA) steps out of conference Saturday and will play Tennessee in Knoxville. DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (So., FB, Cartersville HS)… the former Canes’ offensive lineman converted to fullback caught a third quarter, two-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Cole Saturday in a 38-34 home victory over LaGrange College. It was the only touch by Curtis and the only time he was targeted in the game. The Tornados (2-5, 2-3 USA South Athletic Conference) travels to Averett University (VA) Saturday. KURTIS FEANNY — Lenoir-Rhyne University (Fr., DL, Woodland HS)… saw action in the NCAA D2 24th-ranked Bears’ 51-3 rout of visiting UNC-Pembroke Saturday. LUCAS JOHNSON — Georgia State University (Sr., OL, Cass HS)… was part of the offensive line rotation in the Panthers’ 37-34 home loss Saturday to Coastal Carolina. Georgia State rolled up 521 yards of total offense including 290 yards rushing, but came up three points short in the Sun Belt Conference game. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (Fr., QB, Cartersville HS)… was 20-for-37 for 314 yards and four touchdowns in only two and one-half quarters Saturday as the 2nd-ranked Tigers steamrolled Florida State in Tallahassee 59-10. Lawrence had touchdown passes of 7- and 3-yards to Tee Higgins in the second quarter before connecting on touchdown passes of 58- and 68-yards to Amari Rodgers in the third quarter to build a 45-0 lead. With his performance, Lawrence broke Deshaun Watson’s freshman QB passing record with his 15th passing touchdown of the season. He now has ten touchdowns since taking over for Kelly Bryant in the second quarter of the Georgia Tech game. He also has five touchdown passes of 50 yards or more, the most by any ACC quarterback this season. The true freshman has now thrown for 1,490 yards this season. Clemson (8-0, 5-0 ACC) hosts Louisville this Saturday at noon. CROSS COUNTRY SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Sr., Kingston, GA; Darlington HS)… finished second individually of 80 runners as the Lynx dominated the eight-team Southern Athletic Association Championship Meet Saturday at the Shelby Farms Course in Memphis. Rhodes had the top four individual runners and finished with five in the top nine to win the conference title. The win was a fourth-straight conference title for the Lynx. Oglethorpe University was second and Berry College finished third. Fields covered the 8K course in 25:25 averaging 5:06 per mile. Fields and the 25th-ranked Rhodes College team advances to the NCAA D-III South/Southeast Regional November 10 at Berry College in Rome attempting to qualify for the NCAA D-III National Championships in Wisconsin the following week. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON — Villa San Martin (1st yr. pro; F, Emmanuel College, Excel Christian Academy; Argentine Pro League)… scored eight points with six rebounds, and two assists in his team’s 83-74 loss to Hindu Club Friday night. Robinson is averagine 16 points, five rebounds, and one assist through the first three games of the season. Villa San Martin (1-2) plays at Independiente this Friday night. SOCCER EMILY COLLUM — Georgia Southwestern State University (Fr., F, Adairsville HS)… took one shot on goal but did not score last Wednesday in a 3-1 home win over Albany State. She then took a pair of shots — neither on goal — in a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference loss Saturday against visiting Lander University. Collum played 53 minutes against Albany State and 84 against Lander. The Hurricanes’ season ends with a 3-14 overall record. They were 0-10 in conference and failed to qualify for the eight-team PBC Tournament. KATELYNN LAWHORN — Life University (So., MF, Adairsville HS)… played 71 minutes in a 4-0 loss to visiting Middle Georgia State last Wednesday and took one shot Sunday in a 5-2 loss at 14th-ranked Lindsey Wilson College (KY). Life wrapped up the regular season with a 6-10 mark. KURT MOORE — Birmingham Southern College (Jr., GK, Euharlee, GA; Darlington HS)… made 13 saves in his fourth start of the season, but allowed an overtime goal in a 1-0 loss last Tuesday to Talladega College. BSC (10-5-2) had its season end Saturday with a loss to Berry College in the Southern Athletic Association Championship Tournament in Atlanta. MARISSA MOWRY — Anderson University (Fr., F, Cartersville HS)… played 21 minutes off the bench in a 3-0 win last Wednesday at Coker College. She added seven minutes of playing time in the Trojans’ 2-0 loss Saturday to visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University. For what is believed to be the first time in school history, the Lady Canes’ volleyball team has reached the Final Four of the state playoffs. Cartersville swept past Richmond Academy in three straight sets Saturday in Augusta to win their quarterfinal match, 3-0. “We started slowly,” said Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran. “We were down 19-10 in the first set before we stepped up and started playing.” The Lady Canes came from behind to win that opening set 26-24 and then took the next two sets 25-17 and 25-16. “They (Richmond Academy) were good defensively, but we spotted some openings and capitalized on them,” Cothran continued. “They had the best servers we’ve faced, so I’m proud of the job our serve receive did today.” Anna Grace Brock (photo) had a big day for Cartersville with 16 kills, eight digs, and three service aces. “Anna Grace Brock had the best match of her young career,” added Cothran. “ She seemed to put balls down in bunches from the outside. Nedu Evans and Bekah Stevens also had big days for us. Grace Hunter also set a great match and had some great swings when we needed them most.” Evans contributed 11 kills, seven digs, and six aces. Stevens (photo) totaled 11 kills and five digs, while Hunter finished with 38 assists and three aces. Cartersville, now 26-11, will host St. Pius on Tuesday at The Storm Center in the Final Four. St. Pius defeated Northside-Columbus in three straight sets Saturday in the quarterfinals. The other Class AAAA semifinal Tuesday will feature Marist at Columbus. Both of those teams swept their quarterfinal opponents Saturday. Marist beat Woodward Academy and Columbus defeated Northwest Whitfield.

Both Woodland and Adairsville suffered region football losses Friday night with the Wildcats falling to visiting East Paulding 24-7 and the Tigers dropping a 31-10 road decision at Ringgold. Cartersville and Cass both had bye weeks and will return to action next week. Cartersville (9-0) hosts Troup (9-0) next Friday in a defacto Region 5-AAAA championship tilt at Weinman Stadium. Cass (1-8) wraps up the 2018 campaign at home against Paulding County (0-9). EAST PAULDING 24, WOODLAND 7 Woodland moved the ball pretty well against visiting East Paulding but the Wildcats committed too many first half turnovers in a 17-point loss Friday night to the Raiders. A Cameron Westmoreland field goal midway through the first quarter and a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Tyrell Robinson gave East Paulding a 10-0 advantage less than a minute into the second quarter. Woodland responded with a drive culminated on a fourth down, one-yard Titus Jones (photo) touchdown run to narrow the margin to 10-7 at halftime. Justice Carter had a long run to the five yard line that set up the Wildcats’ score. Ronny Ramirez converted the extra point kick. Neither team mustered another score until the fourth quarter when the Raiders’ Skyler Melton broke off a 44-yard scamper with about 10 minutes remaining and Jhalil Daniels added a one-yard rushing touchdown in the final minute. East Paulding (5-4, 5-2) remains in contention for one of Region 7-AAAAA’s state playoff berths. The Raiders host Villa Rica next Friday. Carter finished the game with 118 yards on 14 carries for Woodland and Demarcus Williams added 81 yards on 20 attempts. Woodland (4-5, 2-5) will look to snap a five-game losing skid and salvage a .500 season next Friday at 10th-ranked Kell. RINGGOLD 31, ADAIRSVILLE 10 A strong rushing attack by host Ringgold proved to be too much for the Adairsville Tigers Friday night in a 31-10 Region 6-AAA decision. Ringgold got a big night from running backs Andre Tarver and Dalton Green to keep their Class AAA at-large playoff berth hopes alive. Green had touchdown runs of 20- and 16-yards, while Tarver scored rushing touchdowns from 35- and 40-yards out to lead the host Tigers. Green put Ringgold up 6-0 with 11:52 remaining in the second quarter and rounded out the scoring with 4:20 left in the game. His final touchdown was set up by a 42-yard scamper by Tarver. Tarver’s two rushing touchdowns came in the third quarter to push Ringgold’s lead from 12-10 to 25-10 with 1:04 left in the period. Ringgold quarterback Cole Kibler also had a solid night with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jared Dunn midway through the second quarter to take a 12-0 lead and another long pass to Dunn late in the third quarter to set up Tarver’s second score and a 25-10 advantage. Trailing 12-0 with less than five minutes left in the first half, Adairsville drove quickly down the field to set up a successful 42-yard field goal by Emmanuel Lopez with 0:16 remaining before the intermission. Adairsville then cut Ringgold’s lead to 12-10 on the opening drive of the third quarter. Mason Boswell (photo) finished off a 65-yard drive that took 10 plays with a four-yard scoring run. Boswell finished his final high school game with 162 total yards of offense. He rushed for 116 yards, passed for 36 and caught one pass for 10 yards. Unfortunately for Adairsville, their threat would not last. Ringgold scored 19 unanswered point over the game’s final 20 minutes for their 21-point win. Ringgold improves to 4-5 on the season and 3-4 in Region 6-AAA. They host Coahulla Creek next Friday. Adairsville’s season ends with a 4-6 overall mark and a 3-5 region record.

The Cartersville boys were runner-up and the Lady Canes placed third Thursday at the Region 5-AAAA Cross Country Championships at Clinton Farms in western Douglas County. The Canes finished behind region winner LaGrange and ahead of host Chapel Hill, Sandy Creek, and Cedartown in the top five. The Cartersville girls were third behind Chapel Hill and LaGrange. Sandy Creek was fourth and Central-Carroll placed fifth. The team finishes by the Hurricanes and Lady Canes advance both teams to the Class AAAA State Championship Meet on Saturday, November 3 in Carrollton. The Cartersville boys had seven runners in the top 19 of 47 runners on Thursday led by Bill Archer (4th, 16:52) and Alex Rios (5th, 16:54). Max Florence (10th, 17:12), Harrison Banks (13th, 17:27), Parker Breedlove (14th, 17:36), Levi Booth (16th, 17:48), and Colin McCann (19th, 18:01) rounded out the Hurricanes’ performances. Andres Sanchez of Sandy Creek won the individual title in 16:26. The Lady Canes were led by Alex Machado (6th, 20:57) and Vanna Beach (7th, 21:07). They were followed by teammates Alice Terry (19th, 22:23), Trista Kelly (21st, 22:33), Jaxiry Betancort (24th, 22:48), Trinity Atkins (27th, 23:14), and Jocelyn Blanchette (29th, 23:24). The girls’ race was won by Zaria White of Chapel Hill in 20:20 and included 43 runners. The Class AAAA Boys Championship race at Carrollton High School will be Saturday, November 3 at 12:30 p.m. The Class 4A Girls race will follow at 1:15 p.m.

The Woodland girls won the Region 7-AAAAA Championship Thursday held at Woodland High School and the Woodland boys team finished second. Those efforts send both the Lady Cats and Wildcats to the Class AAAAA State Championship in Carrollton on Friday, November 2. The Class AAAAA girls championship race will start at 11:15 a.m. preceded by the Class AAAAA boys’ championship race at 10:30 a.m. The Lady Cats took the Region 7AAAAA title with all five scoring runners finishing in the top five. The Wildcats were region runner-up to Rome and had five runners finish in the top 18 of 60 runners. McKenna Trapheagen won the girls’ race in 18:24. She was followed by teammates Angela Cochran (19:16), Carli Clymer (19:29), Baylee Evans (19:59), and Rylee Evans (20:13). Cheyenne Spinks placed seventh in 20:28 and Erica Boatner was 14th in 21:56. The East Paulding girls finished in second place, Rome was third, and Hiram placed fourth. Cass High’s Olivia Flynn was the only Lady Colonels’ runner. Flynn finished 29th of 49 runners in 23:29. Collin Jones of Carrollton won the boys’ meet in 16:49. He was 0:21 ahead of teammate Joshua Beam. The Trojans finished in third place and Hiram was fourth. Dylan Stermer placed fourth in the race in 17:18 to lead all Woodland runners. John Shropshire was seventh in 17:28. John Forsyth (16th, 18:27), Patrick Bollwerk (17th, 18:28), and Kobe Cochran (18th, 18:29) helped lead the Wildcats. Reece Mitchell (31st, 19:03) and Ian Van Order (40th, 19:31) rounded out the Woodland competitors. The Cass boys placed eighth, led by Prem Patel’s 28th place finish in 18:52. The remainder of the Colonels were Bryce Kresho (37th, 19:17), Craigory Chatman (54th, 21:53), Logan Van Stijn (56th, 22:01), and Brenden Hickman (59th, 23:30).

Adairsville cross country runner, Evan Crane, finished in the top half of the Region 6-AAA cross country championship race Tuesday at Resaca Battlefield Historic Site. Crane was the only Adairsville runner to compete in either the girls or boys region meet. Crane, a junior, finished 26th of 53 runners in 20:36.92. Murray County senior Jesse Martinez won the 5K event in 16:34.77 -- more than 33 seconds ahead of his closest competitor. Calhoun won the boys' team championship with Coahulla Creek finishing second. Sonoraville was third and Murray County placed fourth. Freshman Kaylee Bandy of Coahulla Creek won the girls' race in 20:46.43 and led the Lady Colts to a runner-up finish behind Calhoun. Murray County placed third in the girls championship and Sonoraville was fourth.

Cartersville volleyball defeated visiting Lafayette Wednesday night at The Storm Center to advance to the Round of 8 in the GHSA Class AAAA State Volleyball Tournament. After winning the opening set, the Lady Canes lost the second set in the best-of-five match but took the final two sets for a 3-1 victory. “Lafayette made some adjustments after the first set and they were up 16-4 in set three, but we rallied back to win it,” said Cartersville head coach Dustin Cothran. “Bekah Stevens was great for us tonight and while Nedu (Evans) had a few tough moments, she made some big swings when it mattered most.” Cartersville won the opening set 25-21 before the visiting Ramblers took Set 2, 25-22. The Lady Canes then won the final two sets 25-23 and 25-18 to secure the second round victory. Stevens had 17 kills and eight digs while Evans (photo) had 14 kills and nine digs. Grace Hunter dished out 38 assists and had four service aces. Anna Mathis contributed nine digs, while Anna Grace Brock finished with eight digs and seven kills. “Lafayette had a good offense,” added Cothran. “I feel like the girls did a great job defensively against them.” Cartersville (25-11) travels to Region 3-AAAA champion Richmond Academy in Augusta Saturday for the state quarterfinals. The other Class AAAA quarterfinal matchups Saturday include St. Pius at Northside-Columbus, Marist at Woodward Academy, and Northwest Whitfield at Columbus. The Cartersville/Richmond Academy winner will host the St. Pius/Northside winner in the state semifinals October 30.

Seven Cartersville softball players were named to the All-Region 5-AAAA team released earlier this week. The team was selected by the region's coaches and included a first, team, second team, and honorable-mention list. Sophomore outfielder Anna Kate McElhaney was named to the first team with a .378 batting average in region play. Her on-base percentage tied for first with teammate Colbi Ballard at .410. Ballard, a senior pitcher, and junior catcher Lauren McElhaney landed on the second team. Senior Presley Edwards, sophomore Mattie Johnson, and juniors Cio Seigler and Hope Short were named honorable-mention. Ballard finished with a 4-6 win-loss record in the circle during region play. She hit for a .371 batting average with a .410 on-base percentage and .486 slugging percentage. She added 12 RBIs. Lauren McElhaney hit .306 and led the team in walks against region opponents. She was also recognized for her defensive play behind the plate. As designated player, Edwards hit to a triple-slash line of .278/.297/.444. She had three doubles and a homer. Johnson, also recognized for her defensive play finished region play with no errors. Seigler scored 10 runs and had six RBIs. Short had a double, triple and a home run with four RBIs and six runs scored.

Isaiah Livsey had 14 tackles including four for loss. Logan Woods had seven tackles, two for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Braydon Pope had four tackles and an interception with a nine-yard return. DALTON: Kendrix London had seven tackles and one interception. Emmanuel Quintaro and Zion Broome had six tackles each. Two of the Quintaro tackles were for loss. Former Woodland High School softball standout, Jamie Fitzpatrick — now Jamie Jones — was inducted into the Kent State University Hall of Fame in ceremonies this past Saturday morning. The 40th Hall of Fame ceremony inducted nine new members to the Varsity “K” Athletics Hall of Fame. Jones (Fitzpatrick) finished her career (2005-2008) as Kent State's all-time leader in home runs (36) and runs batted in (120). An All-MAC First Team selection, she helped the Golden Flashes to a pair of MAC regular season titles (2007, 2008) and a pair of MAC Tournament crowns. She also earned MAC Tournament MVP honors in 2008 as the Flashes went on to win a program record 46 games, reaching the NCAA Regional finals. The Hall of Fame event took place in the Student Center Ballroom at Kent State Saturday morning with the 2018 induction class also recognized during Kent State's football game against Akron.
