Adjustments at halftime are always key in any sport during a highly competitive game. Thursday night at the Georgia Vinyl Thread Shootout at the Rock hosted by Rockmart High School, the Cass boys obviously made some of the right moves. The Colonels trailed 21-17 after one quarter and held a narrow 35-30 lead at halftime, but outscored Cedartown 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 55-39 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Cass then held off the Bulldogs down the stretch for a 69-62 first round win to advance to Friday night’s tournament semifinals against the winner of Thursday night’s late game between Bremen and Cherokee. Zahquan Frazier led Cedartown with a game-high 20 points. M.J. Holiday added 13 for the Bulldogs. Cass was led by Justice Hayes (photo) with 15 points. Jacquez Fountain and Jordan Ford both added 12. Zay Jackson scored eight points. Zaylan Chaney had seven. Ethan Carter tossed in six points while Braxton Benham and C.J. Pipkin contributed three points each. Cedartown (5-4) will play a tournament consolation game Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Thomson. The Colonels improved to 6-7 on the year and will look to even their season mark Friday night at 8:30 against either Bremen or Cherokee in the tournament semifinals at 8:30 p.m. at Rockmart High School. DARLINGTON 57, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 39 The Cartersville boys lost a consolation game at the Rome Holiday Tournament Thursday night at Berry College, falling to Darlington 57-39. J.D. Hall scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the first half to lead Darlington. Andrew Land added eight for the Tigers. Darlington (5-4) led at each quarter stop. The Tigers were up 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, 28-24 at halftime, and 40-31 after three periods before easing away for an 18-point win. Perignon Dyer paced the Canes with 20 points. He was followed by Amarai Orr with nine points. Manny Hayes, Robert Novak, and Marqual Coaxum scored three each. Austin Cauffman added one point. Cartersville (2-6) will look to bounce back against Calhoun at The Storm Center Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Cass swim team competed in an eight-team meet Tuesday evening at Darlington with the Lady Colonels coming away with a third place finish and the boys placing fifth. Woodstock won the girls competition with Dawson County placing second. The Coahulla Creek girls were fourth with Darlington, Southeast Whitfield, and Model rounding out the girls’ standings. On the boys side, Woodstock won with Darlington, Dawson County, Southeast Whitfield and Cass rounding out the top five ahead of Model, Coahulla Creek, and Coosa. Highlights for the Cass teams included a win by Eli Wilhoit in the boys 100-yard butterfly. He was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed second. Levi McCrary, Solon Harris, and Griffin Howard joined Wilhoit on that relay squad. Wilhoit, Harris, Howard, and Jackson Jones were the Colonels’ 200-yard freestyle relay team that placed fourth. The Lady Colonels’ 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relay team of Charlotte Sturgeon, Anna Padgett, Destiny Goss, and Breanna Fairchild placed third in both events. The Cartersville boys basketball team lost a semifinal matchup with Rome 67-52 Wednesday evening at Georgia Highlands College as part of the 65th annual Rome Holiday Tournament. The Canes reached the semifinals by knocking off Coosa on Monday 75-72, but the Class 5A Wolves pulled away in the second half Wednesday to reach the tournament’s championship game Thursday night at Berry College. Rome led 17-16 after one quarter and held a 32-26 advantage at the intermission. The Wolves extended their lead to 47-38 after three quarters and went on to prevail by 15. Caleb Byrd led all scorers in the game with 31 points for Rome. Jaylen Nelson and Justin Ingram also reached double figures for the Wolves with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Rome (5-3) will face either Model or Darlington in the tournament finals Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at Berry College. Senior Perignon Dyer led Cartersville in the scoring column with 14 points. He was followed by Kolbe Benham with 11. COOSA 66, WOODLAND BOYS 62 Playing in a consolation game of the 65th Rome Holiday Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Georgia Highlands College, Woodland was edged by Coosa 66-62. The Wildcats held a 17-14 lead after one quarter and the two teams were tied at the intermission, but Coosa took a 51-34 lead in the third quarter. Woodland came back to challenge in the final quarter, but the Eagles held on for a four point win. Kenan Dixon led Coosa (5-4) with 16 points. Sean Brown followed with 12. Hunter Johnson had a game-high 23 points to lead Woodland. He was followed by Dawson Wilkins with 15, Jaylen Ballard with 11, Peyton Roberts with nine, and Justice Carter wtih four points. The Cartersville girls edged Woodland 32-31 Tuesday night at Georgia Highlands College in a consolation game of the 65th annual Rome Holiday Tournament. The win by the Lady Canes was a second of the season over the Lady Cats. The two teams met December 1 at Woodland with Cartersville coming out on top, 48-36. Tuesday night Woodland led 4-3 after a low-scoring first period, but Cartersville held leads of 15-12 and 24-22 at the next two quarter stops before holding on for their one-point victory. Kierra Milline led Cartersville with nine points. Ariana Cochran followed with six. Naijah Evans and Lehla Thomas scored four each. Haley Johnson, London Shaw, and A’mya Davis (photo) added three each for the Lady Canes. Madgie Robinson had a game-high 14 points to lead Woodland. She was followed by Ansley Evans with five points. Morgan Cooper and Jordan Thompson posted four points each. Nickiah Metcalf and Gracie Styles added two points apiece. The Cass girls and boys basketball teams made a clean sweep of visiting Adairsville Tuesday night. The Lady Colonels took the opener 67-29 and the Colonels won a back-and-forth battle with the Tigers, 63-56. CASS BOYS 63, ADAIRSVILLE 56 The Cass boys took a double-digit lead only to have Adairsville rally late and take the lead before the Colonels pulled away down the stretch for a 63-56 win Tuesday night at Cass. In fact, the Colonels held the Tigers scoreless over the final three minutes to secure the non-region win. Cass raced out to a 22-9 lead after the first eight minutes, but the Tigers answered to narrow the margin to 31-30 at halftime. Adairsville took the lead in the third quarter 47-46 before the two teams traded leads through much of the final period. Jacquez Fountain (photo) had a game-high 26 points to lead the Colonels in the scoring column. C.J. Pipkin followed with 10 points. Justice Hayes accounted for nine. CASS GIRLS 67, ADAIRSVILLE 29 The Cass girls stormed to an early 23-6 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in taking a 67-29 win at home Tuesday night over visiting Adairsville. The Lady Tigers were basically playing without their leading scorer, Nakiya Washington. She came off the bench for a few minutes in the first half, but was ineffective and sat the remainder of the contest. Washington injured her ankle last Saturday and simply had not recovered for Tuesday’s game. Cass led 38-18 at halftime and extended the lead to 57-23 through three quarters. The Cartersville boys are settling into their full roster for the 2018-19 season now that the football season has concluded. On Monday night, the infusion of some new faces helped Cartersville snap a four-game skid with a 75-72 victory over Coosa at the Rome Holiday Tournament. The Canes led 25-22 after eight minutes, held a 44-34 lead at the break, and maintained a 61-51 advantage before holding off the Eagles in the fourth quarter. ROME 58, WOODLAND GIRLS 28 The Lady Cats lost their opening game at the Rome Holiday Tournament Monday night, falling to Class 5A 7th-ranked Rome, 58-28. Rome led 10-6 after one period and 25-18 at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter. The Lady Wolves outscored Woodland 18-3 in the third period. Amberly Brown led Rome (6-2) with 12 points. Taemeca Nation followed with seven points. Trenshia Adams and Tamiya Griffin scored six points each. Woodland got eight points from Madgie Robinson. COOSA 42, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 38 The Lady Canes struggled in the first half Monday night and despite a late run lost to Coosa 42-38 in the opening round of the Rome Holiday Tournament. “We had our share of chances,” said Lady Canes head coach Cindy Moore. “We just never got in position to take the lead after playing poorly in the first half. Add to that, we were only 9-for-20 at the free throw line.” Cartersville was only down 14-11 after one quarter, but failed to score in the second period to trail 24-11 at halftime. Coosa maintained a 37-24 lead after three quarters and then held on for the win although the Lady Canes outscored the Eagles 14-5 over the final eight minutes. Nayja Millsap and Gracie Shumate led Coosa (2-7) with 12 points each. Kaylee Clayton chipped in eight points. Arianna Cochran led Cartersville with 10 points. She was followed by A’mya Davis with eight, Naijah Evans with six, Jamiya Moore with five, Haley Johnson four, Alexia Henderson three, and Kierra Milline scored two points. The loss for the Lady Canes was their third straight after starting the year 3-0. Coosa advances to play Rome in the tournament semifinals Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Georgia Highlands. Adairsville's Vic Beasley had his most impactful game of the season Sunday as the Atlanta Falcons routed the Arizona Cardinals at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Beasley upset the Cardinals' passing game with a sack and two pass deflections while finishing with three total tackles in the 40-14 win. NFL VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (4th yr. pro; DE; Clemson; Adairsville HS)… had his biggest impact game of the year Sunday as the Falcons snapped a five-game losing streak and defeated the visiting Arizona Cardinals 40-14. Beasley deflected a pass that turned into a pick-six for linebacker Deion Jones in the first quarter to tie the score at 7-all. He batted down another pass in the third quarter and recorded a sack early in the fourth quarter finishing the day with three total tackles. Atlanta (5-9) plays at the Carolina Panthers Sunday. PRO BASKETBALL ELIJAH ROBINSON — Villa San Martin (1st yr., pro; Argentinian League; F; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)… came off the bench to score 20 points with two rebounds and an assist in a 90-81 home loss Wednesday to Salta Basketball. JANA MORNING — Berry College (So., G, Cass HS)… the Lady Vikings’ starting guard scored 13 points, collected nine rebounds, dished three assists, and had four steals in a 66-63 win Friday night over visiting LaGrange College. She also had three points, seven rebounds, one assist, and one steal in a 69-64 loss last Monday at Mississippi University for Women. Berry (3-6, 0-1 SAA) hosts Agnes Scott Tuesday before traveling to Dallas, TX to face UT-Dallas and Concordia-Texas December 28-29. JOSIE SUMMERVILLE — North Park University (Fr., F, Adairsville HS)… scored six points with three rebounds, a blocked shot, and a steal in a 68-60 loss Saturday at Elmhurst College. The Vikings (5-5, 2-2 Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) plays at St. Mary’s College (IN) Wednesday afternoon. COLLEGE FOOTBALL JORDAN FERGUSON — Middle Tennessee State University (Soph., DL, Cartersville HS)… played three years at St. Francis HS and his senior season at Norcross HS before transferring to Cartersville HS in the spring of 2017 to graduate. He played in 11 games this season for the Blue Raiders who lost 45-13 Saturday night to Appalachian State in the New Orleans Bowl. Ferguson finished the year with 12 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. COLLEGE WRESTLING ROBBY EARICK — Life University (So., 149-wt. class, Cartersville HS)… went 2-1 as an individual as his team went 3-0 at the Smoky Mountain Collegiate Duals in Pigeon Forge, TN this past weekend. Earick pinned his opponent from Bluefield College (VA) in a team 44-6 win and defeated his opponent from Midway University (KY) in an Eagles’ 46-3 victory. His loss was to his Campbellsville (KY) University opponent, but the team won 25-13 over the NAIA 15th-ranked Tigers. Next for Life is the NWCA National Duals January 4-5 in Louisville, KY.

The Woodland wrestling team won the McCallie Invitational Wrestling Tournament over the weekend in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The tournament championship marks a fifth title for the Wildcats' grapplers this season. The 26-team event was held Friday and Saturday at the McCallie Student Activity Center. The Wildcats finished 19 points ahead of North Hall with Cleveland (TN), host McCallie (TN), and Vestavia Hills (AL) rounding out the top five teams. Woodland had four individual champions in the tournament. Kyle Gollhofer won the 120-pound weight class, Caleb Henson captured the 126-pound division, Caden McCrary won the 132-pound bracket, and Jaxon Smith took the top podium spot at 145 pounds. Other top placers for Woodland included Gavin Nix (113) and Cole Cochran (138) with third place finishes. Carson Bailey finished fourth in the 106-pound division. Caleb Jones (152), Tommy Duke (160), and Demarcus Williams (195) all placed fifth. Blake Cash took sixth place in the 170-pound division. Next for Woodland is the Osceola High School (FL) Knockout Classic December 28-29 in Kissimmee, Florida.

The Adairsville wrestling team had eleven competitors place in the top four of the 12-team tournament over this past weekend at Social Circle. As a result, the Tigers placed third as a team in the event despite missing three starters due to injuries. Those three are expected to return to the Adairsville lineup this week according to Tigers' head coach Ryan Torrence. Angel Banda won his weight class and Joseph Pacheco had a runner-up finish at Social Circle. Jaxson Owens, Doss Dudley, James Standridge, Jody Sutton, Cody Shook and Austin Jackson all placed third. Brendan Luginbuhl, Evan Henry, and Dominick Schroeder finished fourth.

It has been a roller-coaster early season ride for the Adairsville Tigers. Adairsville is the only team to have knocked off first place North Murray, but after dropping a 53-49 game to Murray County Saturday, the Tigers have also lost to two of the teams at the bottom of the Region 6-AAA standings. Adairsville led 16-6 after one quarter behind a trio of three-pointers by Mason Boswell, but the visiting Indians narrowed the margin to 25-19 by halftime and took a 35-34 lead into the fourth quarter. Boswell finished with 23 points to lead Adairsville in scoring. Danarous Johnson followed with 14 for the Tigers. Murray County improved to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in region play. Adairsville limited the visiting Lady Indians to only seven points in the second quarter to get back into the game 28-20 at halftime, but the Lady Tigers’ struggled at the free throw line in the second half and could not make up the total deficit. Nakiyah Washington led Adairsville with 16 points. Aaliyah Applin followed with 12 points — all in the second half. Murray County improved to 7-6 overall and 5-3 with their victory. Adairsville (3-8, 1-7) plays at Cass Tuesday at 6 p.m.
