Sam Howard made his second appearance of the year for Colorado Monday night and worked a scoreless ninth inning as the Rockies blew out the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 13-2 at Coors Field. Howard retired Christian Walker on a ground out to start his frame, but then gave up a ground ball single to center field by Patrick Kivlehan. He then retired Chris Steward and Nick Ahmed on fly outs to complete the inning. Howard’s one inning helped wrap up a victory that extended the Rockies NL West lead to 1-1/2 games over the Los Angeles Dodgers and 3-1/2 games over the D-backs. Rockies starter German Marquez fanned 11 and allowed only one earned run to gain the pitching win. Trevor Story’s sixth home run in the last seven games and David Dahl’s first career grand slam helped Colorado build their huge lead. The appearance was Howard's second in the Major Leagues. The Cartersville native had a previous shutout inning June 10 also against the Diamondbacks. Howard is a fifth-year professional, selected in the 3rd round of the 2014 MLB draft by Colorado. The 25-year-old southpaw made 21 starts in 2018 for the Rockies' Triple A Pacific Coast League affiliate, Albuquerque Isotopes.

A local travel baseball team competing as Cartersville Purple 14U won the Training Legends Tournament this weekend in Marietta at Sewell Park. Cartersville defeated the Sandy Plains Wildcats and tied the Hobgood Braves in preliminary round games to set up a championship game with the Hobgood Park club. Cartersville Purple 14U won the championship game, 5-1. In the finals, Ayden Ray had a two-RBI double in the first inning and finished with three RBI following another hit in the third inning. Brady Cole contributed a pair of hits. Cameron Constantine also contributed one RBI in Cartersville’s three-run third frame. Constantine went three and two-third innings on the mound for Cartersville allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts to earn the pitching win. Other teams in the tournament included the Cherokee Reds, New Level, and USA Prime. The freshman converted her only shot attempt in 40 minutes after firing off five shots (three on goal) across 42 minutes in a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Southern Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Hurricanes (2-1) host Middle Georgia State on Wednesday and Warner University this Saturday. Katelynn Harbeke (Life University, Sr., Cass HS) — Harbeke recorded two shots, including one shot on goal, in Life's 3-0 win over Brewton Parker on Saturday. Kurt Moore (Birmingham Southern College, Jr., Euharlee resident, Darlington HS) — Moore earned the win in goal against Huntingdon, allowing two goals with three saves in a 3-2 overtime victory on Tuesday. Woodland pounded out 15 hits and Sarah Baynard tossed a complete game five hitter to win at East Paulding Monday evening, 12-0. Baynard (photo) did not walk a batter and struck out four in the six inning win. Hannah Miller had three hits and one RBI for the Lady Cats. Morgan Cooper drove in three runs and had two hits including a double. Kendyl Hardin had two hits including a home run and two RBI. Ansley Evans had a double in her two hits. Jordan Duck also contributed a pair of hits. Caroline HIgdon doubled and had a sac fly to drive in three runs and Skylar Chappell added a double and one RBI. The win pulled Woodland into a tie for second place in the region with East Paulding who slipped to 13-6 overall and 7-2 in region play. Woodland (13-5, 7-2) extended its current win streak to seven games in a row and 12 of the last 13. The Lady Cats host Region 7-AAAAA leading Carrollton (12-1, 8-0) Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. VILLA RICA RALLIES PAST CASS With two runs in the top of the seventh, visiting Villa Rica came from behind Monday night to edge Cass, 5-4, in a Region 7-AAAAA contest. The Wildcats and Lady Colonels swapped the lead throughout with Cass taking an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Villa Rica scored three runs in the top of the fourth for a 3-2 lead, but Cass posted single runs in their half of the fourth and fifth frames to carry a 4-3 advantage into the last inning. Tori Sheldon (7 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 6BB, 3K) was a complete-game winner in the circle for the Wildcats. Rachael Lee (7 IP, 5R, 3ER, 8H, 2BB, 2K) went the distance for Cass and was tagged with the loss. Kayla Hurley, Reagan Gunter, and Mallorie Sitton combined for six hits and three RBI for Villa Rica. Jaden Musacchio and Hallie Owens (2 RBI) both doubled for Cass. Bartow Blue 9U defeated Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe 28-6 Saturday at Ringgold High School. Lance Tippett and Kaiden Kent were the top receivers for Bartow collecting 56 and 42 yards, respectively. Kent also rushed for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jovani Bautista Jackson added 67 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Bartow 9U defense was led by Jorain Bailey with eight tackles. Kadon Fezzia followed with six tackles. Lance Tippett, Israel Moreno, Maddox Raughton, Gatlin Fair, and Chris McClendon all contributed four tackles each. Bartow Blue 9U (2-0) plays at Trion this Saturday at 12 noon. BARTOW 12U 28, RINGGOLD 0 Bartow 12U shutout host Ringgold Saturday evening 28-0 and benefited from a 108 yard rushing performance by Jamarion Pullum. The victory evened Bartow 12U’s record at 1-1 in the North Georgia Youth Football League. Comari Nettles totaled 70 yards rushing for Bartow. Gavin Johnson ran for 39 total yards including a 25 yard touchdown. Kelson Mitchell added a four yard touchdown run and 28 yards rushing. Xavior Darby passed for 45 yards and had a 30-yard touchdown pass to Grayson Dysart. Nettles led the Bartow defense with six tackles. Cartersville volleyball won three matches without dropping a set to win the 2018 Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday at Cass High School. With their title, Cartersville has now won 12 straight Bartow County Tournament championships. The Lady Canes defeated the host Lady Colonels in the championship match, 25-8, 25-20, and 25-10 to take the title. Nedu Evans had 14 kills, four aces, and nine digs in the finals for Cartersville. Grace Hunter made 35 assists and had nine aces. Anna Grace Brock totaled six kills and four aces, while Anna Mathis contributed 15 digs and three aces. “It was a good team effort in the finals,” said Cartersville coach Dutch Cothran. “Grace Hunter got us started with some great serving and she set well all day. Halle Matthews played well in the middle today and we had several players step up in Bekah Stevens’ absence today.” Stevens missed Saturday’s tournaent to take the ACT. In earlier action, the Lady Canes had two other wins. Cartersville defeated Adairsville 25-20, 25-7 and topped Cass 25-16 and 25-18. Evans had 18 kills against Adairsville and 14 against Cass in the first match. She also totaled five aces and 14 digs in those two matches. Hunter had 64 assists in the preliminary matches to go with a dozen assists. Brock contributed 13 kills, seven aces, and nine digs prior to the finals while Mathis had 24 digs in the first two matches. The Lady Canes (11-11) host Chapel Hill and Troup Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Storm Center. Troup and Cartersville are both unbeaten in region actoin. Cass defeated Woodland twice in preliminary rounds. The Lady Colonels won the first meeting 27-25, 25-18 and needed three sets in the second match. Cass won the second match 25-22, 20-25, 25-19. Cass plays at LaFayette Tuesday in non-region action. Adairsville will host Haralson County. Woodland joins Carrollton for two region matches at Hiram.

The Cartersville boys ran fifth and Woodland was sixth Saturday at the 27-team Class 4A-5A Carrollton Orthopedic Invitational at Carrollton High School. Cass also competed in the event placing 24th. Pace Academy won the division 58 points ahead of second place Carrollton. McIntosh placed third and Union Grove was fourth. Dominic Macias won the boys 4A-5A race on the state championship course in 17:12. Bill Archer led Cartersville with an 11th place individual finish in 18:09. He was followed by fellow Hurricanes Alex Rios (18th, 18:37), Parker Breedlove (34th, 19:19), Jacob Busek (43rd, 19:35), and Colin McCann (46th, 19:37). Woodland was led by John Shropshire who ran 21st in 18:48. Other scoring runners for the Wildcats included Dylan Stermer (24th, 18:59), Kennedy Stinson (26th, 19:07), John Forsyth (27th, 19:12), and Kobe Cochran (35th, 19:19). Prem Patel (70th, 20:14) was the top runner for Cass. Bryce Kresho (109th, 21:25), Logan Van Stinj (147th, 23:18), Craigory Chatman (160th, 24:14), and Brenden Hickman (177th, 27:45) had scoring runs for the Colonels. The Woodland girls’ lineup did not include its normal top runners, but the Lady Cats still placed seventh in the 21-team Class 4A-5A Carrollton Orthopedic Invitational Saturday on the state championship course at Carrollton High School. Cartersville finished eighth. McIntosh won the girls’ race with five runners in the top six. McIntosh was followed by Union Grove, Pace Academy, Columbus, Starrs Mill, and East Paulding. Megan Uszynski of McIntosh won the individual race at 20:07. Rylee Evans led Woodland with a seventh place finish in 20:48. She was followed by Erica Boatner (23rd, 23:10), Marlee Bowles (30th, 23:42), Avery Hull (35th, 24:28), and Rayevan Freeman (82nd, 26:43). Cartersville got scoring runs from Alex Machado (25th, 23:16), Trista Kelly (52nd, 25:04), Vanna Beach (54th, 25:09), Alice Terry (60th, 25:23), and Jaxiry Betancourt (63rd, 25:45). Cass did not field enough runners for a team score, but had Olivia Flynn finish 79th in 26:33. Next for Woodland is the Warpath Invitational next Saturday at Boling Park in Canton. Cartersville will host the Wire2Wire Invitational at Dellinger Park next Saturday.

Woodland improved to 3-0 and won its second straight over Cass Friday night at the Colonels’ Doug Cochran Stadium, 17-7. The intra-county battle was the Region 7-AAAAA opener for both teams. Titus Jones scored the game’s first touchdown on a one-yard plunge with 3:55 left in the first quarter. The play capped off a 66-yard drive that took eight plays and came on the heels of a blocked Cass field goal attempt. It was the first of three times in the game the Wildcats' would thwart the Colonels deep in Woodland territory -- twice in the red zone. Cass had driven deep into Woodland territory and was in position for a 24-yard field goal attempt that was blocked prior to the Wildcats’ drive. Down 7-0, Cass drove 74 yards in 10 plays to knot the score 7-7 in the opening minute of the second quarter. Colonels’ quarterback Rett Moore punched in a two-yard run with 11:03 remaining in the half and Kaleb Speights added the Cass PAT. The game remained tied until late in the third quarter when Woodland took advantage of a Cass turnover. Demarcus Williams (photo) found the end zone on a two-yard run to culminate a 10-play, 39-yard touchdown drive that gave Woodland a 14-7 lead after the second PAT of the night by Ronny Ramirez. Williams finished the night with 71 rushing yards. Ramirez converted a fourth quarter, 34-yard field goal for the game’s final points. ADAIRSVILLE TAKES HOMECOMING VICTORY The Adairsville Tigers won their 2018 Homecoming game and Region 6-AAA opener Friday night over Coahulla Creek, 41-10. The game started approximately 30 minutes late due to a weather system moving through the area and the visiting Colts actually took an early lead. Coahulla Creek drove 44 yards on 16 plays, but settled for a field goal and a short-lived 3-0 lead. Adairsville’s Savaun Henderson returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and a Tigers’ 7-3 lead. Adairsville added to their lead in the opening minute of the second quarter. Mason Boswell scored the touchdown on a two yard run for a 14-3 Tigers’ lead. Adairsville scored again in the final minute of the half to grab a 22-3 lead at halftime. Courtney Slocum scored on a 13-yard touchdown run and Nic Jackson ran in a two-point conversion. In the third quarter, Michael King caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Cade Bate for the Colts’ only touchdown and narrowed the margin to 22-10, but Boswell answered 17 seconds later with an 80-yard touchdown run that put the Tigers up 28-10 after a missed PAT. The loss keeps Coahulla Creek winless through the Colts’ first three games. Adairsville (2-1, 1-0) travels to Haralson County next Friday night. CANES' TD SHUTOUT STREAK CONTINUES WITH BLANKING OF McNAIR Cartersville continued a dominant start to the 2018 season Friday night with a 70-0 blanking of visiting McNair at Weinman Stadium. The win was a third straight game for the Cartersville defense without allowing a touchdown and the Canes’ offense has averaged 53 points in those wins. The only points scored against Cartersville this season was a second half field goal by Luella. The Hurricanes scored on seven of their first eight possessions in the game and led 35-0 at halftime. Marcus Gary had short touchdown runs of six and four yards in the first half. Quarterback Tee Webb added touchdown passes to Marquail Coaxum and Trendan Horton, and Coaxum also had a 20-yard interception return for a score for five first half touchdowns. In the third quarter, Webb added three more touchdown tosses to finish his night with five scoring strikes and 339 yards. He was 16 of 25 passing with second half TD passes to Devonte Ross, Jackson Lowe, and Marko Dudley. Webb (photo) has 11 touchdown passes in the last two games. Cartersville backup quarterback Evan Slocum had a four-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter and Quante Jennings punched in a one-yard scoring run as the Canes reached their 70-0 final score. McNair, who had wins over Towers and Redan to start the season, slipped to 2-1 on the year. Cartersville (3-0) will host Class AAAAAAA Cherokee next Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Woodland pitcher Madi Bentley tossed a four-inning, two-hitter Thursday night as the Lady Cats shutout visiting Paulding County, 12-0. Bentley walked four and struck out five while earning the win in the circle. Woodland scored two runs in both the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead before ending the game in the bottom of the fourth with an eight run outburst that included six hits, a walk, and a Patriots’ error. Woodland accumulated thirteen hits in just four offensive frames. Morgan Cooper (double, RBI), Skylar Chappell (double, 2 RBI), Hannah Miller (RBI), and Bella Carnes (triple, RBI) all had two hits apiece for the Lady Cats. Jordan Duck had a hit and three RBI. Morgan Bailey contributed a hit and two RBI. Kendyl Hardin doubled and Caroline Higdon added one hit. Kendall Cantrell had both Paulding County hits. The Patriots slipped to 3-12 overall and 1-8 in region play. Woodland (13-5, 7-2), won its sixth-straight and has now won 11 of 12. The Lady Cats play at East Paulding Monday at 5:55 p.m. and host Region 7-AAAAA leader Carrollton on Tuesday. CENTRAL-CARROLL 7, CARTERSVILLE 2 Visiting Central-Carroll took a 4-0 lead early and kept Cartersville off the scoreboard until the sixth inning in a 7-2 Region 5-AAAA win Thursday evening. S Sharp tossed a complete-game four-hitter for the Lions. She struck out five and walked only one. AnnaKate McElhaney (7 IP, 7R, 4ER, 7H, 5BB) went the distance in the circle, but suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville. F Bennett had two hits and one RBI for the Lions. Taylor Stevens hit a fifth inning solo home run and finished with two RBI. Lauren McElhaney finished with a pair of hits for the Lady Canes including a double and one RBI. AnnaKate McElhaney contributed one RBI with a hit. Cio Seigler had the other Cartersville base hit. Central improved to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in region action. Cartersville (7-9, 3-5) is off until next Thursday at 5:55 p.m. for another region tilt at Sandy Creek. SONORAVILLE 2, ADAIRSVILLE 0 Adairsville and Sonoraville battled in a scoreless tie through five innings Thursday evening before the home-standing Phoenix posted the game’s only two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 2-0 Region 6-AAA win. Kristen Davis (7 IP, 0R, 2H, 0BB, 9K) was a complete-game pitching winner for Sonoraville. She also drove in two runs and had one of the two Phoenix hits. Adairsville’s Victoria O’Neal (6 IP, 2R, 0ER, 2H, 0BB, 8K) was saddled with the loss despite tossing her own two-hitter with no earned runs and eight strikeouts. Sadye Johnson and Alexa Varner had the Adairsville base hits. Sonoraville (12-2, 9-1) remains in first place in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (3-16, 1-9) plays at Northwest Whitfield in a non-region game Saturday at 5 p.m. and returns to region action Monday at Coahulla Creek at 5:30 p.m. CARROLLTON 8, CASS 0 Olivia Fannin tossed a no-hitter and Carrollton scored six times in the bottom of the third inning Thursday evening on their way to an 8-0 blanking of visiting Cass. Fannin walked two and struck out eight in her five inning performance. Scout Jennings and Fannin combined for four hits and three RBI to lead the Carrollton attack. One of Jennings’ hits was a home run. The Trojans remained undefeated in Region 7-AAAAA at 8-0 and improved to 11-1 overall. Cass (2-12, 2-6) entertains Villa Rica Monday at 5:55 p.m. and travels to Rome on Tuesday.

Woodland volleyball edged Sprayberry 25-21, 25-22, but fell to Cherokee 25-12, 25-14 Thursday night at home in non-region matches. In the win over Sprayberry, Macey Vaughn finished with nine assists, eight digs, and a pair of aces. Caroline Gore added five kills, eight digs, and a service ace. Sydney Molinaro totaled five kills, six blocks, two digs, and one ace. Gore had two kills and three digs in the loss to Cherokee. Molinaro added five blocks for Woodland. “We played hard all night,” offered Woodland head coach David Condon. “ We just didn’t execute as well as I would have liked.” Woodland squares off with host Cass Saturday morning at the Bartow County Championship Tournament. CARTERSVILLE LOSES NON-REGION ROAD MATCHES Cartersville volleyball dropped a pair of non-region matches Thursday evening at North Paulding, losing to North Cobb Christian and the host Wolfpack in straight sets. North Cobb Christian took a very close battle 25-22 and 25-18. North Paulding downed Cartersville 25-18 and 25-12. Against North Cobb Christian, Nedu Evans finished with 14 kills, eight digs, and two aces. Grace Hunter contributed 23 assists and three aces. Anna Mathis and Anna Grace Brock had 14 and 12 digs, respectively. Bekah Stevens was credited with six kills. “We played well and battled hard through most of the first set,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “It was close until their little run at the end. They are a talented team and we just never really got it going in the second set.” In the loss to North Paulding, Evans totaled nine kills and four digs. Hunter had 16 assists. Stevens totaled four kills and two aces and Mathis contributed 11 digs. “We lacked some focus and energy in the first set (vs. North Paulding),” added Cothran. “It was a rough night, but we were able to get some players some valuable experience.” Cartersville (8-11) opens the Bartow County Championship Tournament against Adairsville Saturday morning at 9 a.m. The tournament is being hosted by Cass.
