DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia State University (Sr., DB, Adairsville HS)… had a tackle on a screen pass play in the first quarter last Thursday at Troy, but the play was wiped out due to off-setting penalties. Troy went on the win 37-20 and stay unbeaten in the Sun Belt Conference. Georgia State (2-4, 1-1) has a bye week before traveling to Arkansas State for a Thursday night game on October 18. TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (Fr., RB, Cartersville HS)… returned a third quarter kickoff 69 yards and added a fourth quarter carry for 12 yards as the Eagles beat visiting Point University 28-10 Saturday night. NAIA 6th-ranked Reinhardt (5-1, 2-0) travels to Bluefield College (VA) for another Mid-South Conference game this Saturday night. CHRIS BLACKSTON — University of West Georgia (Jr., DB, Adairsville HS)… the Wolves’ starter at free safety had two tackles and broke up one pass in West Georgia’s 31-7 victory over visiting North Greenville University Saturday. NCAA D-II 5th-ranked West Georgia (6-0, 3-0) continues Gulf South Conference play this Saturday night at 11th-ranked University of West Florida in Pensacola. TREVOR CARLTON — Reinhardt University (Sr., LB, Cartersville HS)… had six tackles (five solo) including one for a three-yard loss in the 6th-ranked Eagles’ 28-10 win over Point on Saturday. Reinhardt (5-1, 2-0) plays at Bluefield College (VA) in another Mid-South Conference game this Saturday night. MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-So., QB, Adairsville HS)… was 18-for-29 passing for 143 yards and one touchdown as the Huskies won at Ball State 24-16 Saturday in a Mid-America Conference game. Childers did throw one interception, but also rushed for five yards on nine attempts. His touchdown pass was a 13-yarder in the first quarter to D.J. Brown to cap an 80-yard drive. Through six games this season, Childers has a 102.2 QB rating on 101-for-181 passing. He has thrown for 804 yards and eight touchdowns (134 ypg). He has also rushed for 73 yards and one score (12.2 ypg). NIU (3-3, 3-0) hosts Ohio University this Saturday afternoon for the Huskies’ 112th homecoming game. XAVIOR COAXUM — LaGrange College (So., DB, Cartersville HS)… had six tackles (four solo) including one for loss in the Panthers’ 38-14 home loss Saturday afternoon to Averett. Although he missed one game, Coaxum is second on the team in tackles this season with 18 and has one interception. LaGrange (1-4, 0-2 Conference USA-South) travels to Greensboro College next Saturday afternoon for another conference tilt. MILLER FORRISTALL — University of Alabama (R-So., TE, Cartersville HS)… saw playing time in top-ranked Alabama’s 65-31 victory at Arkansas. The Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC) host Missouri next Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. RICO FRYE — Bowling Green University (Fr., RB, Cartersville HS)… had three, third quarter carries Saturday for 24 yards during an 84-yard scoring drive. The touchdown drive narrowed Toledo’s lead to 31-28 at the time, but the Falcons eventually lost 52-36. GSW also lost a mid-week, non-conference game to Shaw University last Wednesday, 4-0. Now with a 2-9 record overall and 0-5 in conference, Georgia Southwestern has conferences games this week at Flagler College Wednesday and at home against UNC-Pembroke Saturday night. KATELYNN HARBEKE — Life University (Sr., MF, Cass HS)… started for the Runnin’ Eagles in a pair of 2-0 losses this past week. Life lost to NAIA 8th-ranked Cumberland University (TN) Monday and to 16th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Wednesday night. Harbeke took one shot in the loss at Cumberland. She played 59 minutes at Cumberland and 28 against Georgia Gwinnett. Sunday, she started and played 37 minutes in a 3-2 loss to Georgetown (KY). In 11 games (10 starts) this season, Harbeke has a goal and three assists. She has taken 17 shots (5 on goal). Life (4-7, 0-2 Mid-South Conference) plays at conference foe Campbellsville University (KY) this Saturday night. KATIE LAWHORN — Life University (So., MF, Adairsville HS)… played six minutes last Wednesday in a 2-0 home loss to 16th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett. Life also had losses to 8th-ranked Cumberland University and Georgetown (KY) during the week. Life (4-7, 0-2 MSC) travels to Campbellsville University (KY) this Saturday night. GOLF LINDSEY BONNER — York College (Soph., Cartersville HS)… shot 88-91 this past weekend to place 26th individually, but her Spartans team won the 12-team, 50-player Green Turtle Invitational at Shenandoah Valley Golf club in Front Royal, Virginia. York shot 315-307—622 to win by nine shots over Stevenson (MD). The Spartans play this Saturday and Sunday in The Revolutionary Collegiate Golf Classic at Patriots Glen National Golf Club in Elkton, Maryland.

Chad Branton of Cartersville reached the quarterfinals of the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship this weekend at Echelon Golf Club in Alpharetta. Branton fired an even par 72 last Thursday in stroke play to qualify for the match play bracket. He had a win Friday over Mel Mendenhall 1-up in the first round and then knocked off the defending champion — Stan Gann — 1-up in the second round. He then lost 7&6 Saturday to Bob Royak in the quarterfinals. The tournament championship was won Sunday by Matthew Hayes 2&1 over Samuel Lape. Both Hayes and Lape are members of the Furman University golf team.

The Woodland High School cross country teams competed Saturday at the Great American Cross Country Festival held at the WakeMed Soccer Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The Woodland girls were featured in the Girls Race of Champions won individually by Kelsey Chmiel of Saratoga Springs (NY) in 16:43. The Woodland boys, competing in the Varsity Blue Boys Division placed 26th of 44 teams that included 332 runners. The division was won by Broughton (NC) followed by St. Pius X (GA) and Brentsville District (VA). Zachary Worthman of Clarksburg (MD) won the Blue Boys Division race in 15:51. The Georgia Class 5A top-ranked Lady Cats were paced by McKenna Trapheagen (19th, 18:18, photo). She was followed by teammates Carli Clymer (52nd, 19:11), Angela Cochran (69th, 19:26), Rylee Evans (101st, 19:54), and Baylee Evans (123rd, 20:09). John Shropshire led the Wildcats with a 48th place finish in 17:36. He was followed by teammates Dylan Stermer (96th, 18:08), John Forsyth (135th, 18:28), Kobe Cochran (172nd, 18:42), Reece Mitchell (210th, 19:02), Patrick Bollwerk (212th, 19:04), and Ian Van Order (232nd, 19:20). Woodland will run next Saturday at the Coach Wood Invitational in Whitesburg, GA. CARTERSVILLE RUNS AT JESSE OWENS CLASSIC The Cartersville cross country teams competed Saturday in the annual Jesse Owens Classic held at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Oakville, Alabama. The Georgia Class AAAA 7th-ranked Cartersville harriers finished ninth in the Boys Silver Division that included 51 schools and 357 runners. Pearl (MS) won the division, followed by James Clemens (AL), Rossview (TN), Station Camp (TN), and Father Ryan (TN). Bill Archer led the Hurricanes with a 19th place finish in 17:14. He was followed by teammates Alex Rios (64th, 18:04), Max Florence (69th, 18:09), Parker Breedlove (128th, 18:47), Harrison Banks (129th, 18:47), Jacob Busek (133rd, 18:49), and Colin McCann (140th, 18:54). The Cartersville girls placed 22nd in the 42-team Silver Division race won by Fort Payne (AL). The Auburn (AL) girls were second, followed by Pelham (AL), Father Ryan (TN), and Pearl (MS) in the top five. Katelyn Cartwright of Hernando High won the 286 competitor Silver Division race in 19:00. Cartersville was led by Alex Machado (61st, 22:02). She was followed by fellow Lady Canes Trista Kelly (132nd, 23:31), Vanna Beach (142nd, 23:47), Alice Terry (158th, 24:06.67), Jaxiry Betancourt (159th, 24:06.97), Jocelyn Blanchette (176th, 24:28), and Metzli Munoz (204th, 25:39). Cartersville cruised past visiting LaGrange Friday night behind five touchdown passes by quarterback Tee Webb, but the Hurricanes were the only Bartow County team to win -- defeating the Grangers 45-7. Cass started slowly in a 34-21 loss at Hiram, Adairsville was blanked by top-ranked Calhoun 61-0, and Woodland fell to 4th-ranked Carrollton 47-20 despite three touchdown passes by Jakob Foss. CANES CRUISE BEHIND WEBB’S FIVE TD PASSES Cartersville made easy work of visiting LaGrange Friday night at Weinman Stadium, taking down the Grangers 45-7. The Canes went up 17-0 early, surpassing the most points allowed by the Grangers in a game this season and it came in the first quarter alone. Tee Webb connected with Kaleb Chatmon for Cartersville’s first touchdown and after Oscar Hernandez kicked a field goal, Marcus Gary added a touchdown run for the Hurricanes’ early advantage. In the second quarter, Webb had touchdown throws to both Devonte Ross and Marko Dudley as Cartersville took a 31-0 lead to the locker room. LaGrange (1-5, 0-3) scored on a 55-yard pick-six in the third quarter, but Cartersville and Webb added touchdown strikes to Jackson Lowe and Marquail Coaxum for a 45-7 victory. Webb finished 26-for-36 for 337 yards and five touchdowns. He did throw one interception. Marcus Gary had 82 total yards and a touchdown. Quante Jennings rushed for 108 yards. Jackson Lowe finished with 47 yards receiving and a touchdown. Devonte Ross had 39 yards and a score. Kaleb Chatmon contributed 32 yards and a touchdown. Hiram quarterback, Nate Presnell, threw a pair of first quarter touchdowns to Kyshun Battle and running back Marcus Fulks rushed for a 13-yard score as the Hornets raced to a 20-0 lead. The Colonels kept the ball for almost 11 minutes of the second quarter and narrowed the margin to 20-7 on a two-yard keeper by Rett Moore (photo), but Presnell drove the Hornets 55 yards in four plays to match the Colonels’ second quarter touchdown. The 6-foot-7-inch quarterback connected on an 11-yard scoring completion to Jermaine Banks with 0:43 remaining in the half and led his team to the intermission with a 27-7 lead. Malik Grimes capped a 64-yard, third quarter drive for Cass that narrowed Hiram’s lead to 27-14, but Fulks broke loose on a 65-yard scamper with 6:20 left in the game to make the Hornets’ lead 34-14. Cass cashed in a Hiram turnover with 3:12 remaining in the game. After the Hornets fumbled at their own 17 yard line, Zay Jackson scored on a nine-yard run making the final score 34-21. Fulks finished with 165 yards rushing for Hiram. Presnell was 7-for-8 passing for 133 yards. Cass was led by Moore with 102 yards rushing. Malik Grimes added 46 yards on the ground. Hiram improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (1-6, 0-5) hosts East Paulding next Friday night. TOP-RANKED CALHOUN ROLLS AT ADAIRSVILLE The Adairsville Tigers fell to Calhoun Friday night by a score of 61-0. The Tigers had a tough time keeping their offense on the field while attempting to contain the high-powered attack of Calhoun. The Class AAA defending state champion Yellow Jackets led 21-0 after one quarter and 47-0 at the half. Class AAA top-ranked Calhoun took advantage of four first half interceptions and recovered a pair of kickoff fumbles in building their one-sided lead. Zack Fuller ran for three touchdowns and Gavin Gray tossed a pair of touchdown strikes for the Yellow Jackets. Fuller scored on runs of 3-, 11-, and 46-yards. Gray connected with Brannon Spector for a 20-yard touchdown and Luke Moseley for a 26-yard score. Jonkell Tolbert, Julian Ipac, and Jerrian Hames had touchdown runs for Calhoun. Backup quarterback Jake Morrow completed a 56-yard touchdown to Cedric Lacey in the second half. Calhoun improved to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Regon 6-AAA. Adairsville drops to 3-4 on the year and 2-3 in region action. The Tigers play at Sonoraville next Friday. FOSS THROWS FOR THREE TOUCHDOWNS, BUT WILDCATS FALL TO TROJANS Carrollton raced out to a 21-0 lead at Woodland Friday night on their way to a 47-20 Region 7-AAAAA victory, but Wildcats’ quarterback Jakob Foss threw for three touchdowns in the loss. Brandon Marenco ran for four touchdowns to lead the Trojans. Trent Lane also had a score and several key runs for Carrollton. Foss (photo) connected with Justice Carter for a 41-yard touchdown and Titus Jones added a two-point conversion that made the score 21-8 at the time. Foss then found Jones before the intermission for a 15-yard touchdown pass that made the score 28-14 at halftime. Three straight touchdowns by Carrollton pushed the Trojans’ lead to 41-14 before Foss connected with Jones again for a 42-yard scoring play. Justice Carter had 105 rushing yards on 21 carries and added a touchdown catch. Jones finished with 109 yards. Foss was 7-for-15 passing for 150 yards. Carrollton improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in region action. Woodland (4-3, 2-3) has a bye week before traveling to Villa Rica October 19.

The Woodland Middle School girls and boys cross country teams captured dominating wins this week at the Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association's 2018 championship meet. The Cartersville girls were runner-up and the Calhoun boys placed second. The Woodland girls took six of the top nine individual spots with Emma Segars winning the race in 13:31. Tyler Jones of Woodland won the boys race in 11:42. He led six Wildcats' runners in the top ten. The girls golf team from Calhoun Middle School and the Cartersville Middle School boys team won the 2018 Bartow-Gordon Middle School Athletic Association golf championships earlier this week in Calhoun. The Calhoun girls won by nine shots over runner-up Cass. Ella Manley of Calhoun fired a nine-hole total of 38 to win girls' medalist honors followed by Christina Surcey of Cass with a round of 42. The Cartersville boys won the BGMSAA title by 14 shots over runner-up Calhoun. The Cartersville boys took three of the top five individual spots led by a 38 by Jeb McDonald, a 40 by Andrew Lutjens, and a 41 by Caleb Daniel. A two-out, two-RBI, ninth inning double by Hannah Miller helped lift Woodland to a 5-3 win at top-seeded Carrollton Wednesday night as the Lady Cats captured the 2018 Region 7-AAAAA Championship by winning the rubber game of their best-of-three series with the Lady Trojans. According to Woodland head coach Colman Roberts, the region title is a first in the program's history. Madi Bentley, who worked all nine innings for Woodland in the circle, gave up a two-out walk in the bottom of the ninth, but induced a ground ball out to the right side to end the game and launch the Lady Cats’ region title celebration on the Trojans' field. Bentley and Carrollton pitcher Olivia Fannin battled one another throughout the night in a game that reached extra innings tied 1-1. Woodland went ahead 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning, but Carrollton answered to send the game to the ninth with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth. Bentley, Woodland’s Game 2 winner on Tuesday night, scattered eight hits and five walks Wednesday to earn the pitching win. She fanned one and all three runs were earned. Fannin allowed ten hits and walked seven while striking out nine. Zahiria Dunson was the only Carrollton player with two hits. Six other Trojans had one hit each. Miller had three hits including a pair of doubles and four RBI to lead Woodland. Jordan Duck (double, RBI) and Bella Carnes had two hits apiece. Morgan Bailey, Kendyl Hardin, and Skylar Chappell contributed one hit each. Ansley Evans had a sacrifice in the ninth to help set up the Lady Cats’ go-ahead runs. Carrollton (22-5) will be the 2-seed in the Class AAAAA state tournament and host the 3-seed from Region 6-AAAAA in a best-of-three series between October 9 and October 12. Woodland (22-7) will be the 1-seed from Region 7-AAAAA and will host the 4-seed from Region 6-AAAAA in a best-of-three series between October 9 and October 12. CASS ELIMINATED AT REGION TOURNAMENT The Lady Colonels lost for the second straight night at the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament and had their 2018 season come to a close. Cass, losers in walk-off fashion Tuesday night to Hiram 7-6, were eliminated by Kell Wednesday evening, 10-2, in six innings. The Lady Colonels struck for a run in the top of the first and led 1-0, but the Longhorns responded with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. Cass scored again in the third to narrow the margin to 4-2, but a five-spot by Kell in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth made it a 10-2 final score. Mia DeAngelis drove in three runs with a pair of double to pace the Longhorns’ offense. Savannah Markt and Meghan Hamilton added two RBI apiece. Lexie Scarpantonio and Valarie Artigues had two hits each for Kell. Kaila Carson (RBI), Eryn Lee, and Kelly Young all had two hits each for the Lady Colonels. Rachael Lee drove in a run with a double. Markt (6 IP, 2ER, 7H, 0BB, 3K) was the Kell winning pitcher with a complete-game effort. COAHULLA CREEK 9, ADAIRSVILLE 2 Adairsville fell behind early on Wednesday and could not recover in a 9-2 loss to Coahulla Creek at the Region 6-AAA Tournament in Calhoun. The Colts scored five runs in the opening inning en route to a 9-0 lead after three innings. Adairsville scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the 9-2 final score. Alexa Varner scored on a wild pitch for the first run, and O'Neal doubled home Havyn Isaac for the second. Chloe Souders finished 2-for-2; Isaac wound up 2-for-4; and O'Neal and Breaana Wilson had a hit apiece for the Tigers. Now eliminated from the Region 6-AAA Tournament, Adairsville’s season concludes with an 8-21 mark.

The Cartersville boys were second and the Lady Canes placed fourth at the 10-team Cass-Cartersville Invitational held Tuesday at Cass High School. Woodland’s girls placed sixth and the Woodland boys were tenth without their normal varsity starting lineups. The Pope boys had the top four runners and five of the top nine to win the boys event. North Cobb placed third with Bremen and Duluth rounding out the top five. Pope also captured the girls race, edging Centennial by a single point. Those two teams accounted for eight of the top ten runners and ten of the top thirteen. Harrison’s girls were third and Bremen placed fifth. The race attracted 71 girls runners and 85 boys. John Higinbotham won the boys race in 16:28. Sophie Boice was the girls winner in 19:01. Alex Machado led the Cartersville girls with a 16th place finish in 22:17. She was followed by teammates Vanna Beach (33rd, 23:51), Trista Kelly (34th, 24:04), Alice Terry (40th, 24:50), Trinity Atkins (42nd, 24:56), Metztli Munoz (45th, 25:09), and Meghan Murphy (67th, 24:39). Woodland softball split a doubleheader at Carrollton Tuesday night forcing a rubber game Wednesday in Carrollton for the Region 7-AAAAA championship and No. 1 seed in the Class AAAAA state tournament. Carrollton won Game 1 8-2, but the Lady Cats bounced back in the nightcap to win, 9-7. The host Lady Trojans scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning in Game 1 to take control and Carrollton pitcher Olivia Fannin limited Woodland to only one earned run on five hits and a walk. Fannin struck out eight. Sarah Baynard (6 IP, 8ER, 9H, 2BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss. Maddie Mashburn was 3-for-3 for Carrollton with three RBI. Allie Threadgill and Scout Jennings both had two hits for the Trojans. Bella Carnes (photo) doubled, tripled, and drove in two runs for Woodland in the loss. ADAIRSVILLE STAYS ALIVE AT REGION 6-AAA TOURNEY Adairsville softball survived an elimination game at the Region 6-AAA tournament Tuesday evening, defeating Haralson County 9-7 at the Calhoun Recreation Department. The Lady Tigers swapped the lead with Haralson County early but scored three times in both the fifth and sixth innings to take control with a 9-5 lead. Haralson County challenged with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had a runner on base when Adairsville pitcher Taylor Rhoades got a two-out fly out to secure the victory. Rhoades (3.2 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 3BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win for Adairsville in relief of starter Victoria O’Neal (3.1 IP, 5R, 0ER, 4H, 3BB, 1K). Chloe Souders had two hits including a double for the Tigers. Natalie Burrow had a double and two RBI. O’Neal had a hit and two RBI. Alexa Varner had one RBI and a double. CASS FALLS TO LAST INNING RALLY Cass softball lost its first game in the Region 7-AAAAA Tournament Tuesday night at 7-6 to Hiram on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game was played at East Paulding. The Lady Colonels had a 5-4 lead going into the home half of the seventh inning, but Hiram loaded the bases ultimately set up the game winning hit by the Hornets’ Amina Paul. Eryn Lee led the Colonels on offense, finishing 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Kylee Hembree had two hits, while Haley Owens and Rachael Lee had a hit and two RBIs apiece. Kaila Carson had the other hit for Cass. The Lady Colonels face Kell in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Wednesday at East Paulding.

Cartersville volleyball defeated North Paulding in a grueling five set match at The Storm Center Tuesday night to close out the regular season and celebrate the Lady Canes’ Senior Night. North Paulding took the opening set 25-15 before Cartersville won the next two sets 25-22 and 32-30. North Paulding edged the Lady Canes 26-24 in the fourth set, but Cartersville pulled out the deciding set, 15-12. “North Paulding has a very good team,” said Cartersville head coach Dutch Cothran. “We were fortunate to come away with a win tonight. Nedu Evans finished the night with 23 kills, two aces, and a dozen digs. Bekah Stevens contributed 14 kills, two aces, and ten digs. Anna Mathis totaled three aces and 16 digs. Anna Grace Brock had seven kills, four aces, and 14 digs. “We made some errors, but our serving was huge tonight,” added Cothran. “Having Nedu on the outside and Bekah right side keeps the blockers honest. Plus Grace Hunter does a great job getting them the ball.” Cartersville improved to 20-11 on the season and will play next Tuesday, October 9 in the first round of the Area 5-AAAA Tournament at Chapel Hill. The Lady Colonels beat Villa Rica 25-17 and 25-19 and carried that momentum into a first set win against Paulding County to win 25-17. The Lady Patriots responded, however, with wins in the next two sets 25-18 and 25-19. Cass plays in the Area 7-AAAAA Tournament Thursday, October 11 at Rome High School.
